  • I grew up and lived in NYC for most of my adult life. I remember meeting Moondog during the 1970’s.
He was always standing at the corner of 6th Ave. and 53rd Street. I recognize him immediately from one of the reels of home movies I bought last year.
In 2023 I purchased a stack of old 8mm home movies from a Buenos Aires flea market. The guy who made them was a world class traveler/tourist. The movies are of Denmark 1964, Sweden ‘64, China ‘77, Japan ‘77, Thailand ‘77, Hong Kong ‘77, USA 62, Mexico, Panama ‘62, Israel ‘64. The music at the end of the clip is a Moondog composition “Pastoral” played by Max Allard and his brother Otto. maxallard.com . Subscribe to my channel & you’ll be notified next time I upload more interesting home movie clips.

This just might be the only known footage of him during the 60s. What a treat for uploading this.

I hadn’t thought of it but you are probably correct. He was born (Louis Thomas Hardin) in May, 26, 1916. So in 1962 when this was shot he would have been 46.

my uncle was in the Canadian Navy as a radio Officer (on loan to the Norwegian tankers) and after the war served on the DEW line in Canada when the St. Rockh the RCMP boat, came through the NW passage. Filming was forbidden, but I viewed Super 8 he had done in the late fifties. My aunt, instead of asking anyone, threw it all out when my uncle passed in 2005. I was choked.

Always loved the fact that this man had an interesting music connection. When word got out that Alan Freed was heading to NYC as the new DJ for WINS radio, our dear Moondog was ready to sue him!
Turns out, Freed was using the Moondog moniker out in Cleveland years earlier. He thought he could continue using the name in NYC. A certain homeless musician said nope. The Municipal courts agreed! Seems that he actually copyrighted his Moondog moniker years before Freed came to NYC. They sided with New York Moondog and made Alan stop using the nickname over the NYC airwaves.❤

I did the digital transfer myself using the Wolverine Pro. It converts everything to 1080p. I had to adjust the color because it was too blue. I used the "Walk" "Don't Walk" sign (green /red) behind Moondog as guide. I'm sure it could have been done better but it is what is.

I use a Time Machine that lets me convert old 8mm and Super 8mm home movies into digital files. I then edit the old films and add a soundtrack. I like to think of myself as a kind of visual archaeologist. Visually preserving things that no longer exist.

Apparently he was a rather famous blind musician at the time that lived in New York for 30+ years. He would spend a lot of time hanging around Sixth Avenue promoting and selling his music.
