Hi Bob thanks for filming this and making it available to us all to see 50 years on. I was at the open day, with a chap called Tim Gould from Sherborne, unfortunately no longer with us. As school boys we had a great time and decided it was the career for us. Tim went into the box at sherborne while I joined the footplate at ooc in 1972. Still driving now at Westbury. I think of those days every time I look at where Bath Road depot use to be. It was a big depot with really good facilities provided by BR. Unlike the box room that is provided to day on platforms 5 and 7 at Bristol. The Western was a really good loco to work on but were being maintained on a thin budget in their final days hence the smoking exhaust also if you took a lot of power very quickly you would beat the turbocharger which would always create smoke. The driver on the western arr at Cardiff was an ooc top link man Harry hmmm forgotten his second name he would have had relief at Cardiff with a cardiff or Swansea man going forward. But a great job. Thanks for jogging our collective memories. Dave.
Good Morning Dave, and thank you for sharing your memories which is greatly appreciated. Unfortunately, we are all getting older and many friends and colleagues no longer with us.I worked on the Clerical side in the Divisional Office at Cardiff, and they were very Happy Days...Best wishes...Bob
The most beautiful video I've ever seen! I'm a Driver at BTM, didn't get to see Bath road depot but to see its opening day on this video was lovely. Thank you so so much!
That's very kind of you to say so, I only wish I had sound on my Cine film back then, but it was very expensive and only four minutes long...Regards...Bob
It just makes you realise how long you've been filming Trains Bob.....all those Years have melted away. Some cracking footage here in these clips....you have made a superb job of transferring this material on to YT for us to appreciate. Well done..most enjoyable....Steve.
Great to see, Bob. I was at the Bristol Open Day in 68, couldn't see myself though. There's a few photos on my website. Great memories. Thanks for posting. Keith
It was quite rare to have open days back then..to see 'Lizzie' in Maroon at the time was a shock, as she was withdrawn from BR in lined BR Green...Thanks as always Jeff...Bob
I was a Shunter at Stoke Gifford “ Bristol Parkway now” and transferred to Pz, then years later back to Bath Rd as a Guard, this video brings back so many memories, especially the Shunter standing on the step of the 08 Pilot. Using my Wife’s computer.
Very ingenious way to upload from 8mm Bob , came out well , nice to look back and remember how it was , its near unbelievable how things have changed camera wise , I used to have a hand wind projector ....and hired old footage from the Co-op , as well as the 8mm cine camera my Dad passed on to me ...Dave
Thanks Dave, I would get much better quality now, but my projector no longer works. This footage was taken on an old Russian made Zorki, with a mechanical wind up mechanism...those were the days...just 4 minutes from a reel of film, which had to be turned round half way through...Bob
Love this video, especially at Neath, my hometown :) I wasn't born until the late 70s, so I have no memory of the Westerns on the SWML, but so great you've captured a bit of railway life from this part of the world in this era.
Hard to believe this footage is over 40 years old Larry...seems just like it was yesterday......Thanks as always for your warm responses...Best wishes...Bob
Bob, I was just thinking, 40 yrs age i was 26 yrs old, You are most welcome, my friend, Bob, your last is perfect, because you are A Masterman in Filming and Photography!
Amazing images there Bob, how things have changed at Swansea. I can remember 08 shunters being used there to remove stock to free the loco that had just arrived....
Same as Pz JP, we had two Pilots working here, between Pz and Ponsadane, and on a Summer Saturday early turn, there were 23 up and down trains, each down train having to be tailed and released so the Loco could go for fuel. Including the early vans, Postal, News Papers, Sleepers, and Passenger trains. In the late 70s/80s we had an 08 from Landore Swansea, we had 08895, 08641, and 08644 over a 10 year period .
When you think that this material has been through many processes before uploading, it's good that you can still see it....some sound tracks would be nice, but need some practice on that before it's attempted for public consumption...Best wishes...Bob
Superb Bob this old footage. How things have change in a big way over the years. Interesting watching the on board clips. Swansea was a massive terminal those days. Bring back the good old days. (C&A)
I had the Zorki 4 first Alan, which was a great camera for the price, and the Cine Camera was also superb value for money came later. However with only 4 mins of film and a clockwork mechanism, it wasn't possible to take long sequences back then...Still better than nothing...Regards...Bob
fascinating stuff and that train to Shrewsbury had a buffet car -and on a dmu too-shows how long ago this was!!got any more like this? thanks for putting on
Love cine footage, everything looks much grittier than todays world. Be great to see this same footage redone today. my word, I imagine you would see one heck of a difference from then to now. Lovely piece of film Bob :-)
Great stuff Bob Bristol open day 1968 ....I was there too can't see myself on the video though, still got my spotting notes as well More please if you have any Thanks Brian
Thanks Brian, it would have been strange, if you'd seen yourself in the video...I have got more cine, just takes a while to process it all for uploading.....Bob
Its nice to have a look at the old days brings back memories. I have about 15 can containers full of 8mm that I have not looked at since the 70's. Don't know if it would be any good now.
It depends how it's been stored Wayne, it does get brittle and may lose it's colour after 40 years in storage.....Dig it out, project it onto a cream wall and video it......it will bring back many happy memories...Regards...Bob
Wow very interesting archive cines that I didnt notice. Looking at these are an interesting show of history. Must be sobering looking back at the last 40-50 years when you think they was the good nostalgic times than now. Looking at the layout of Swansea now is just a shadow without semaphores and signal box
Big Ted Thanks Ted during this period the Westerns were very much in charge of the Paddington to Swansea services...eventually being replaced by the 47's then the HST's....Bob
Great classic footage unlike the rubbish operating nowadays,This was BR Locomotion back in the day ,Great sounding iconic Locomotives from the Class 08 Gronks ,Western 52s and those classic DMUs ❤️ Miss those times 🇬🇧❤️
Nice bit of clag from the Western passing the signal at danger! Nice to see the Cross-Country DMU as well, would that have been a Central Wales Line train?
Thanks Andrei, I only wish I could have added a sound track, but I still remember the sounds all these years later. The DMU was destined for Shrewsbury, and at this time, the centre car still had a Buffet for long distance services...Best wishes...Bob
I like these videos you've done Rob great trip down memory lane mate great to see the old BR uniforms worn by the staff and no bloody health and safety either common sense in those days. If you have more videos from the past I would really like to see them. Cheers Kev
the most exicting times on the railway bob, end of the 60s and the full 70s, then it started spiraling downhill ever since and they called it progress , well they can keep the progress i only go to the trackside now when theres a steam or diesel tour, nice vid......hugh
I think it depends on your age Hugh, My favourite time was the fifties and sixties, although I saw the end of steam, I was also lucky enough to see the new Diesel era come into being...Best wishes...Bob
MJ Knight I'm afraid I don't know the reasons behind the closure of Bath Road...it was a terrible shame to see such a busy Depot close. Thanks for watching...Bob
MJ Knight well the reason for closing bath road was because our Bristol council were supposed to of built a massive concert/amphitheatre on the grounds there hasn't been built yet but they have now just got the go-ahead to build on it now but I'm not sure wat yet
David Small That's wonderful David, unfortunately apart from the scene in this video, I'm afraid I don't have any more during that period. I have video footage and photos of Bridgend, but mainly from the 1980's onwards.....Bob
Hello. Great footage! I work for a theatre company and we're currently putting together a short film about Bristol in the 1960s for online circulation. Do you have the original cine film for this? Or any other pieces of Bristol at that time? We're working with a filmmaker and editor who has a scanner. We'd be happy to arrange for your cine film to be scanned free of charge and sent back to you along with enhanced, new version if we'd be able to use some of the footage in our film? If you can let me know if this would be of interest, that'd be great. Thanks Kelly
Hello Kelly, I do have the original Cine film in a box somewhere, but I think it's part of a 200' reel. As you've probably realised my main interest is in Railways, so any footage I have is mainly Railway based. The only other material I have is during a Visit to Bristol Zoo in the early 70's which is outside your time zone. The quality of 8mm Cine after 50 years is not the best, but I can do a search to see if I can locate it for you if you want....Regards...Bob
How do you copy your cine to video ? I still use a screen in the dark and video the image on my camera then to the pc.......I haven't seen a better way, so any ideas will be appreciated Bob.................Regards...............Mike
+strapuk10 Thanks very much, the soundtrack was better than the sound of a whirring projector. The sound track come from UA-cam's Copyright Free Audio Library...The title is 'Let's do it'...artist unknown...Bob

You're the second person to say they were at Bath Road in 68 Keith, it would have been wonderful had you been on this video...Bob
What amazing footage Bob. Great memories of old times. That looked quite an open day at Bath Road. Regards, Jeff.
It was quite rare to have open days back then..to see 'Lizzie' in Maroon at the time was a shock, as she was withdrawn from BR in lined BR Green...Thanks as always Jeff...Bob

@Izaiah Edwin I would suggest Flixzone. Just google for it :)
@Izaiah Edwin I watch on flixzone. You can find it by googling =)

Glad to hear it David, it's changed out of all recognition now....the process of doing it is explained in Mike Wilcox's reply...Bob
Great video. Really takes one back when railways ruled the transport world. Thanks for sharing
It certainly does to those of us of a certain age...Many thanks...Bob
Superb Bob this old footage. How things have change in a big way over the years. Interesting watching the on board clips. Swansea was a massive terminal those days. Bring back the good old days. (C&A)
Thanks both, funny enough I came across this whilst looking for the footage of you doing the back lawn.....how strange is that...Bob
Some classic footage nice to see all the train spotters, not so many about these days.
We are a dying breed Chris...I found this footage whilst looking for something completely different...Best wishes...Bob
Brings back lots of old memories!
That's good to hear Michael, thanks for watching....Bob

It's a period that we see little of in moving images.... only wish there was sound as well Thanks for watching.....Bob,
That is excellent footage and appears to show that Westerns were once quite common on trains to/from Swansea.
Big Ted Thanks Ted during this period the Westerns were very much in charge of the Paddington to Swansea services...eventually being replaced by the 47's then the HST's....Bob
Great film Bob all the westerns thanks for sharing cheers Kevin

Very nice that Bob,The good old days.''
Not the best quality, and no sound track Trevor, but to many of us, a reminder of how the Railways were during that period...Best wishes...Bob

Thank you for uploading this. Nice to see Bristol from it's steam days
MJ Knight I'm afraid I don't know the reasons behind the closure of Bath Road...it was a terrible shame to see such a busy Depot close. Thanks for watching...Bob

That we can agree on. Bad decision on their part.
And you're welcome
MJ Knight well the reason for closing bath road was because our Bristol council were supposed to of built a massive concert/amphitheatre on the grounds there hasn't been built yet but they have now just got the go-ahead to build on it now but I'm not sure wat yet

Believe it not Mike, this was projected onto a wall, copied to VHS, transferred
to DVD, downloaded to Computer, and processed to improve before uploading to UA-cam...Easy peasy....Bob
I was there!
Wonderful to hear Kevin, thanks for watching.
I actually like the soundtrack Bob! Can you let me know what it is or where you got it from? Thanks.

Thanks Paul, I wish I'd owned video back then.
Why were the diesel locos so scruffy and belching out black smoke? Diesels don't have to emit smoke.
They were supposed to be the "clean" replacement for steam traction.
The truth however, is that they were not.
Diesels were cheaper to maintain and required less staff to run them.

Engine idling for long periods leading to glazed bores was the real truth.
Great footage - music was laborious though - sorry.
Thanks very much, other than leaving it without any sound, the choice of Copyright music from UA-cam is limited, and as always a matter of taste, and being in my seventies, I have no musical taste at all!!
@@robmasterman I don't believe that - surely you could've done a tune yourself? I bet you were a right raver during the 60's? All best to you.
fair comment. my apologies.
+David Hope No need to apologise David, I only wish I had the skills to add a dubbed sound track, now that would be much better....Bob
When I look at a book of photos I don't expect the publisher to have felt it necessary to have the book play a tune to me as I flick through, I'm quite capable of looking at silent pictures in silence. Why then do uploaders feel that silent film footage has to be overdubbed with vacuous music? Great film, completely unnecessary music added.
Thanks Andrew for your comments, it's all a matter of taste, and I fully appreciate your comments. Unfortunately, whilst produced, the music track cannot be deleted. If it concerns you that much, then may I suggest you turn off the volume.
Oh why oh why have music. Let it down totally.
+David Hope As this is silent 8mm cine film David, it was either music or the sound of the projector, and the music won...Bob
Better silent than the awful music!
I felt the music was better than the sound of a projector Nicholas, if it bothers you that much, just turn the sound off....Bob
Nothing wrong with some DECENT music, Bob, but your choice of supermarket music simply jars with the subject matter. What about something more classical?
Must try harder next time, the choice in UA-cam's copyright free Audio is somewhat limited.
