- Tough day at the office today Sheep Fans. I just can't seem to get the rams at a price I can afford.

ABOUT ME
I’m 31 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 600 breeding ewes.
I shore over 15,000 sheep this season in UK and I also travel to Norway for shearing in March and September. (Covid messed it up this year)
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on UA-cam and decided I could have a go and now here we are!

@@roadwarrior8560 me three! Unfortunately I can't stay away from auctions, so I'm always overstocked and rushing to sell...not just livestock, but *any auction*. And any re-sale...you wouldn't believe how many auctioneers my family has contacted and ordered not to accept any bids from *me*, but the auctioneers all know me, and absolutely *will* use me to run up prices on other bidders! Then are kind enough to make sure they miss my last bid and I don't get whatever...it's kept my marriage intact as we really don't have the storage room until I've unloaded some (more)of my antiques...

It’s really nice to see the rapport that all of you farmers have amongst each other. You’re really all in it together even though you’re competing at the same time. Its a lovely camaraderie to view from the outside.

It will all be alright…just give it time. Don’t beat yourself up because there might be a reason that it wasn’t meant to be at that sale! In other words just stay positive because I have a feeling that the plan is laid out for you and you just have to follow it 😊🐑💙

Nothing wrong with a Dorset lamb bro, I wouldn’t bugger around with teaser rams to be fair, flush your ewes on good tucker for 2/3 weeks before putting the ram out, and no need for teasers
Yes I did teaser ram once, I agree.
I don't bother with teasers either don't see the point of them at all just something more to feed and look after if the ewes and rams are in good health and have a nice clean bite of grass they'll tip
Those Dorset boys would do just fine as tups rather than teasers. As big as Texel-sired lambs are, it would certainly be easier on your young ewes to match them with the Dorsets for their first breeding.

All the talk is that they will Christine so i’ve stretched my budget by increasing my breeding sheep numbers. 😅
Good going so far cammie... I'm terrible, but before we increased beyond Toby, our one wee ram lamb that gets farmed out to *every other breeder*faster than he can set hoof back home! I went and got a HUGE haul of various cuts of sheep and mutton and lamb cuts, because IF we were going to be breeding sheep(at all) we weren't going to be losing money on them! If they weren't selling at a high enough profit, we'd put them in the freezer. And what didn't sell at a decent profit we'd eat ourselves. Same as our beef. And chickens and the dsmned rabbits (angora- who knew that there's an "angora" something in every species? Cats, dogs, goats, sheep, you name it, there's an angora... I do *now...* that our daughter talked us into for 4-h and showing, "but they've got looong hair! The babies are SO adorable, I csn *sell them* so they're picked up as soon as they're weaned!" And I *know someone who spins*...and someone else who knits......." ...
and WE ended up with 60 damn 25 lb rabbits! *Did* manage to fit them in the freezer, with some swearing and rearranging, and *2 donations.*
But that was it! No more...bright ideas.
Hubby decided to "try" some sort of pigmy pheasants...they're honestly only good for one person, and even then it's just *ridiculous* to slaughter an entire bird to feed 1 person, one meal(part of one meal). And you only actually use the breast pieces! The rest is so "nothing but bones" it went back in the freezer after roasting; made EXCELLENT soup out of it a couple of weeks later.. Still a pita, nothing on the bones, so cracked each and every one to let the màrow flavour the broth. Won't let those tiny, cute pheasants back in except as pets! Sorry, *button quail*.
I don't believe in waste. Especially when an animal gives its life for your table.
Respect their sacrifice and use it to the fullest.No excuses.
My daughters all grew up with that drummed into their lives.

I got excellent results from a Poll Dorset ram. Consistent R grades good growth rates going off early and I gave up on teasers, also another expense getting them vasectomised. The only thing about Dorsets is that shearers don’t much like them.
I definately don’t like shearing them lol. Good rams Wendy no doubt. I just think a texel lamb sells bettter in the live ring here.
@@TheSheepGame of course they do, just that I found the Dorset X finished earlier, their fleeces shone too. Sadly no one cares about wool.. I was crossing the Dorset on my Lleyns in order to sell the cross bred ewes for breeding. The boys had a one way ticket but they looked good and sold well. I also found that the Dorset X ewes that I kept were a bit awkward in the forcing ring with all the tricks in the book to avoid the drench gun.
I really enjoy watching your videos. I have meat goats and we have 1200 acres and I now want sheep! But we will wait and enjoy watching you and your sheep grow. I can relate to your struggles. You inspire a lot of people because of your great attitude and love for people and animals. God bless you and your family

Now that you’ve shown us your trips to the auctions, I’m wondering if you could make a video (or more) about the makeup of your herd. Here are some of my questions: What breeds do you raise and why? Advantages/disadvantages to pure-line breeding and cross-breeding, and which crosses do you like? How many ewes & rams do you have now and how many do you want to have eventually? What proportion of rams to ewes do you like for breeding?
Finally, on an unrelated subject, is your ultimate goal to be a sheep farmer only, or to keep shearing and/or scanning as well?

Blue faced Leicester is my absolute favorite for spinning. The wool is gorgeous. In my books it’s even better than Merino.
Me too. And they're much prettier than Texels. I don't know how they compare for hardiness, though.

Truth - always go with your instinct. You did great. My favorite is the lightest one - is he one that will be used or fixed? He’s beautiful!
I picked up 3 young stud surplus texel rams in the prime pens at our local market (Coalgate NZ) for meat value and have had a successful crop of xbred lambs from them plus by putting them with some texel ewes I have bred my own replacements. Just saying to look outside the box for other ways to reach your goal.

Cammy if more people thought before they made a purchase then they wouldn't be as stressed. Nothing wrong with being a bit tight with your purse and making purchases you absolutely need to grow your business. Once you get into a place where you feel if you buy a ram and you still have some wiggle room in your budget afterwards you will make a purchase.

Could you consider either looking for more mature ram(s), perhaps 3-4 seasons old or a private purchase?
When we have had two tups that kept fighting together we haltered them together about 6' apart and them turn them out for a while, they fairly soon learn to behave sensibly with one another. The whole idea is to stop them backing off and then smack into each other hard.
We took this action after two rams died through fighting with broken necks.

Cammy, why not hold back a couple of your own ram lambs to make teasers? Seems like a lot to spend for the purpose.

Just the look. They are a very docile breed. Usually fed so come to the shake of a bag!

A boy Cammy another good video 👍. Buying ram lambs is always a good investment in my opinion. You'll have em a bit longer & they acclimatise to your lands better for next season when they'll be in full swing. You're able to bring on the lambs into the kinda ram you want as well. Best of luck with your new sheep.
Any ram lambs that look really impressive at the sales will have been intensively fed. They don’t last. Grass fed for longevity the way nature intended them to grow.
@@wendyrowland7787 ya that's what I mean you can bring a lamb on to a ram on your land just grass feed or nuts, whatever suits the buyer.
@@bejaysus7388 the point I was trying to make is that the lamb is likely to have been fed concentrates to accelerate it’s growth. Forcing them into early growth often means a short life. I used to buy my rams from farms that only sold grass fed rams. They had l longevity and did not melt away whilst working. They took longer to reach their full growth potential but their influence on the flock was the same as rams that had been ‘ pushed’.

You would be pleasantly surprised in what a home bred ram can do for you. It is difficult to choose them before one year of age so growing out a young male is not without cost either. Sometimes you just have to go with your gut feeling at the sales. It will usually not steer you wrong. Separating want from need helps too!

Buy a handful of bred older ewes. You can raise your own best rams then. I love my BFL crew and have great white and even better natural ram. You could also breed your best ewes to borrowed ram and save those ram lambs for following year rams.
Hopefully one day we get to that stage. It would be great 😁

You should buy a Berrichon ram, they are easy lambed and fleshed. There is a couple of really good breeders in Scotland. We use them at home in Northern Ireland, we sold some Berrichon lambs on Saturday 23.2kg at £118
The Berrichon is not really something I've considered before Steven, sounds like they're making great prices though Steven
@@TheSheepGame they are the best kept secret in sheep farming. We use a texel ram as well and the Berrichon lamb is just as good if not better and you don't loose near as many at birth compared to the texel because of their big heads. They are also quick on their feet and wanting to suck and finish on grass at good weights

Hi Harry, I always use Kaz for the advice but he’s a couple hours away so it will be a local vet 😁. These boys are 2 shear so seem to have done the job 😁

In my experience Dorset lambs will throw a faster growing meat lamb than a texel but it depends what type you're after.
They are good meaty sheep for sure! They just don’t sell as well in the live ring. 🤷🏼♂️

Nice stock cammie i always by rams in spring here in ireland buy a great ram off season for €200 to €300 euro come tipping time same rams make €600 to €700 best thing i was ever told about buying stock is THE DAY YOU BUY IS THE DAY YOU SELL🤔

Sometimes you can regret selling too low or buying too high, if you get a top class ram though they are always worth the price, rams are up 50% here on last yr at least.

Not really Trish. There is a size they should be and and larger or smaller than that can be a sign of problems 😁
Could u not keep back 2 ram lambs of your own and get them vecestmised instead of buying them in?? Thats what I do keep back the 2 lowest value bull calves and use them for teasers
Shocked me also, had to replay the video three times to be sure those were bought for and not using some other solution from your own flock.

what do you put the Dorset rams on cam?
Do you do anything to improve your grazing land? Do you fertilize, over seed with grass that grows better in cool months, or is all just natural growth?
Hi Paul, all my ground is seasonal lets so i don’t have it for more than a year at a time. Makes it hard to justify spending money on the ground so all natural grass

I have to admit to something: try as I may, Texels seem very homely sheep to my eyes. You have to look twice to ensure they aren't a new type of pit bull. 😮
I have a question. Why are some sheep yellow? I've never seen this before until recently.
The old adage buy low sell high is old because it’s wise! A lot of business went under here in the States during COVID because debt was too high. Lesson learned: don’t buy what you can’t afford even when the “experts” advise otherwise.

What are Teasers?
No need of vacisming good rams. Keep a few of your own in future. Slow growth lambs as exapain. Buy a blackie ram for lanark ewes so no pay on old ewes next year

Well, as the saying goes, "You have to spend money to make money". It hurts the pocketbook upfront but in the end, you should see a return on your investment.
I know that’s why i tried for better rams but just didn’t have the bottle for that final bid 😅
