  • Water hyacinth! It looks pretty, but it's one of the fastest growing and most invasive plants in the world and it causes all sorts of problems.
The corona virus has put a stop to our usual operations, but we continue to support our team, and are using our time to improve our wonderful river and surrounding area. We’re working on turning the hyacinth into sustainable forms of cooking fuel, by drying it, and either making fuel briquettes directly or charring it and making charcoal briquettes.
We’re hoping not only cut back all the negative impacts of hyacinth, but also stop rapid deforestation for firewood and charcoal in the area, with is degrading precious, threatened biodiversity in this area too!
For anyone who wants to hear more of the backstory listen in to Sam's podcast on his website, or "climate change unfolding" on any major podcast app: www.climatecha...
We're working hard on refining the process and designing something that can be long term sustainable, and hopefully scalable. We very much hope that soon we can scale up to help support more of the river community who are struggling right now in difficult times. The rest of the river and lake could do with the environmental reprieve too!
If you think you might know something or someone that might bring some added expertise, or like the sound of the project in some way and want to get involved, let us know!
Thanks to Bubugo Conservation Trust, and Jenny Farmer for being part of the dreaming up of this idea and generally being supportive and awesome, and thanks to Nile River Explorers Camp for allowing us to use their space for drying and producing the briquettes.
