- Join Emily Gray Koehler, Artist and Printmaker, working out of her studio in Northeast Minneapolis, MN as she pulls back the curtain to deconstruct the creation of a color-reduction woodcut. In this form of relief printmaking, a single block is used to create multiple layers of color on a print.
Really nice and instructional video, but also above average motive and execution. 👍
Beautiful! I love the setup of your studio. This process really appeals to me. There’s that element of “Once it’s gone, it’s gone!”
I have loved your art for a long time. Thank you for this demonstration.
Lovely print. What is the block/plate you are using please? It seems to carve really easily.
Thank you! This block was carved in MDF (medium density fiberboard). While it is easier to care than a grained wood (I usually use birch plywood), it's not "really easy" and it can be hard on one's tools. MDF can be a good option if you don't want to show grain or be inhibited by the grain during carving.
This is an excellent demonstration. Your art is beautiful.
Thank you! It was a fun project to capture the whole process.
Thank you for making the video. I never realized how many times you ran the print through! Wow!
Wowser! You never cease to amaze me Emily.
