- The Prunus J-136 AM FM Shortwave Portable Radio is a Compact, AC/DC Powered Receiver that delivers Value for your Tuning Dollar. Looks similar to the 5 Core Brand, but is well above it in quality. AC/DC Power Inputs, D Cell Operation, Aux-In Jack, Above Average FM Reception, Decent MW, and Shortwave Coverage, and all for an inexpensive Price Tag.

Features I like about the J-136:
Front Tuning Knob.
Built in Handle.
Easy to Read Dial.
Above Average Reception on FM, and AM.
Bright Speaker Tone.
AC Input.
DC Input.
D Cell Operation, makes for a Great Emergency Backup Radio.
Solid Build Quality.
Power LED Indicator.
Compact Size. Perfect for Travel.
Low Price.
Features that could be Added or Improved on:
Tuning LED.
Headphone Jack.
A Left to Right Dial.
More SW coverage, 3.0-22.0MHz would be ideal.
Overall, this is a Fantastic Radio for the Money. If it is on sale for $16, and you have a need for a shop, travel, or backup receiver, this is a Solid Recommendation. Lately Prunus has been hitting it out of the park with these low cost, high performing units.

Another "Most excellent review". Thanks Mr Bert. Always appreciated. (NZ Viewer)
It’s adorable.
It's good to see that Prunus is keeping up the build quality of these. At first glance I honestly thought it was just another knockoff of the 5 Core. I have this one on my wish list now. Thanks Todd.
Nice radio and a great price also.
I don't see the link to the wire clip on antenna. Can you post it please? Great review.
I use this with great results: amzn.to/46Gp2JR The Kaito T-1 Reel antenna with adapter.
Looks like a decent radio, but just being honest here, lost 'me' with the reverse dial. Fix that, more a consideration at that price point. Thanks for the review.
This radio Antenna what set-up to you. Tell me this product. My radio not clear band station, FM ,SM,WM not clear.
Hej Todderbert thanks for the review the Prunus J-136 sesms very nice for the price and a lowcost radio that can preform take care and have a nice evening.
Thank you! Enjoyed your review. Feel like I've already had it in my hands. Dial going right to left is OK. However turning the knob clockwise to push the pointer left will take getting used to!
I'm always surprised that you get 1690 Maryland so easy. I'm 85 miles from that station and only know it's there using a Terk during the day...and 1690 Toronto overpowers it at night...it would be like me getting the squirrel. I would think all you would get is Toronto with both of us being about the same distance. You get the trophy for doing miraculous things with radios.
I see this link takes me to the AM/FM version. Did they drop the SW? I don’t think I would use SW anyway. But did I miss something?
Looks like they dropped the Shortwave bands. Thanks for the heads up, I'll change my description of the link.
I dont think the 5 core radios are even made anymore😔
Not bad at all! It sounds like the audio chopping during AM fading is less severe than on previous DSP models. This would be a great development if true! I'll put this one on my want list!
Nice tabletop radio, tbh. And rugged enough to take camping or to the beach.
Good sound for such an inexpensive radio.
It's a keeper :)
This is all you need to meet a happy old age! 👍
Nice review. The people who design these radios keep making the same mistakes:
1- No dial light that can be turned on and off.
2- No tone control knob.
Hopefully Prunus reads this, and we will see it in one of their next designs.
we will try to upgrade this one, thanks for your advice
Thanks for the tip, got mine and I like it. I'd probably mark my MW frequencies, yes the dial is off.
Very good radio with a classic style!
Another great video by Todderbert ❤
Don't see much right to left tuning.
