- Prunus released the J-166 in an AM FM only Version. The Portable Radio has a major Audio Upgrade. The Speaker is now Amazing to Listen to. I contacted Prunus to tell them to use this same speaker in the NOAA Weather Version of the J-166. Let's hope they do :)

Features I like about this Radio:
Clean Design.
Excellent Audio.
FM Reception Above Average.
Simple Controls.
AA Battery Operated.
Belt Clip.
Included Lanyard.
Tuning, and Battery Life LEDs.
Inexpensive.
Features that could be Added or Improved on:
Remove "birdies" on the AM band. The older Weather Model does not have this issue.
Overall, a great radio for the Price. Reminds me of the DreamSky DS213 portable, and looks similar on the sides, and back.

Just bought this radio in RED. What a little gem :) Great am/fm reception here in Phoenix. Loud, clear speaker and simple to use. My only complaint is that it falls over very easily. Using the antenna as a kickstand solves the problem. Thanks Todderbert for the review!
This has the best speaker output in my collection. It is my "walk in the park" radio. My CCrane Pocket and my Retekess PR 15 are my falling asleep radios. Great Review! More Power to your channel.
As a boy on the 1960's, I ALWAYS had a similar type/size radio. No stereo headphones back then. Just a single mono "ear plug"!
When not near a television set, I closely followed every American manned Space Flight. From Project Mercury, Gemini and later all our manned Moon Landings.
Also, near the large cities were always several 24 hour ALL NEWS STATIONS! Yup, I was a News Nerd! If you needed a briefing before making your "Current Events" presentation before the whole class, I was your "go to" Guy.
I was the same (in the 1980s) and what I find amusing is that, now, I go around doing basically the same thing with one mono bluetooth ear bud and an iPhone that is thinner, but more or less the same size. Of course, that was about $15-20, not $500-1000. ($20 in 1985 = $50 now)
It was huge fun in the 60s and 70s to be huddled in bed at night listening to stations in major cities like WCBS or WSM, from our farm in Ohio. Before the internet, it was exciting to hear what was going on in far-off cities.
Terrific radio for $9.99. Very good long distance MW reception. I regularly listen to east coast stations from western Michigan. Very good audio!
It's good to see you are still reviewing basic low cost pocket radios.
Hej I agree with you there is definitely a need for low cost radio devices take care and have a nice day.
@@NTPTM I think Todd needs to review the new Sony p27. I love my Sony p26, but I'm very interested in the new p27 but can't find consistent info about the differences between the p26 and p27.
@@jlichi1510 Hej absolutely the sonny P27 is interesting and I also have the Sonny P26 take care.
Love small radios
Had one, ordered another one, red! Great powerfull sound! Very satisfied!
Thanks for all your reviews! Just ordered the “2024 Update” Prunus J-166 along with the white Eton FRX2.
Todderbert, I agree with you that the speaker in the new Prunus J-166 is very nice sounding to say the least! Thank you very much for your video tutorial in reference to this new Prunus portable radio model!
You're Welcome John.
Just received mine and it's surprising how good it is! It gets signals that my PL-310ET struggles with inside my apartment! For $10, I might just get a second.
Thank you so much for your response. Love your reviews, they’re the best. Is 40 to 50 hours with the Prunusj-166 considered a good battery life? If it is, I’ll order one soon, probably the red one. I hope it doesn’t have anything to do with the proposition 65 thing. I keep reading about things like that. Thanks again for your wonderful reviews. Peter.
The red Prunus was thought up by the Chinese company, so maybe their flag? The Prunus should run that amount of time on low-med volume.
@@todderbert thank you again so much, I love your videos because of the amount of detail you put in. I was just worried that the battery life on the J-166 prunus radio would last long enough to be worth buying. Thanks again. Peter.
Nice. Perfect when I work on the lawn. I actually love the belt clip. Very useful
I bought it over the SR-35 because of the clip! (well, and the price...)
Todderbert, that speaker in the new Prunus J-166 is spectacular to say the least! Have you looked through the speaker grille under a bright light? Do you see that bright silverish color speaker cone? I really like this Prunus edition of their J-166 as it is a strong unit! Thanks, Todderbert...
This radio has a very nice sounding speaker - the bass is noticeable and pleasant. However, my radio's antenna separated from the case just after one day of super-light use. Exchanging for a new one (Amazon) today - I love the form factor. Great review!
I received mine yesterday wow what a radio... thank you so much for your channel. There's nothing that beats the sound have your favourite songs coming through a great sounding transistor radio
Where did you buy the fm-transmitter?
I liked my recently purchased Prunus J-166 little radio so much that I just ordered another couple of them, one for my elderly mom to use on her balcony, and the other one to keep in the vehicle for use at work or wherever. Great sound for such a little portable at such a low price. But...for nicer sound and tuning display, also really enjoying my XHDATA D-109WB. Your videos have convinced my to assemble a stable of radios!
Nice to see this is Silver and Red! Thanks Prunus!. Now we need some odd ones like Lime or Tangerine next! In Asia they use these colors on radios
I love my J-166 too! What a great radio
So many radios
So little time LOL
Thanks for the review
I didn't take the statement that it was better than the p27 seriously and travelled to 3 Walmarts to get a p27 before my J166 was delivered.
You were right.
The Sony ICF-P27 just recently had quite the price increase, as of July 30,2024 it is now $50. That’s double of what it was a few weeks ago and now I’m considering getting this Prunus radio or look around for P26 radio.
Well, this is a decent radio for the price.
Very nice detailed video!
Between the J-166 and J-328 which one would you recommend to buy? Or would choose something else altogether?
it depends your needs, dude
Hej Todderbert thanks for the review of the new Prunus J-166 I will buy this radio I also think it's nice to have a radio with low cost who can perform and, I have bought a lot of such radio devices that you have tested I am very happy with them. Furthermore, I am very fond of portable fm / Am radios so nice to take with you when you go out they do not take up so much space then I like to collect them yes you know how it is Todderbert you can not have too few radios take care and have a lovely day.
Prunus offers excellent customer service if you ever have problems with their radios...
Prunus has replaced 2 J-401s for me due to the volume control wheels breaking! Great support indeed!
@@johnbeckham1483 Hej thanks for the info regarding customer support Prunus radios I am a big radio lover and have bought quite a lot of Prunus radios lately and I am very satisfied with them. And The Prunus J-166 FM/AM version that I also have now is a very lovely pocket radio with great speaker and very nice reception where I live tak care and Mary Christmas.
@@johnbeckham1483 Hej thanks for shariing sharing and bad luck with volume knob but as you say good customer support from Prunus take care.
@@NTPTM Merry Christmas to you as well! Enjoy your 📻 radios! Thanks...
Just ordered this radio for under $10 on Amazon as a gift. After watching your demo I'm so impressed I may keep it for myself. I'm not far from you, I'm in Salem, WI and it was instructive hearing the same stations I listen to. One question I have is: If I plug in modern stereo ear buds will I hear stereo in both ears? Mono in both ears? or Mono in just one ear? Thanks for the review.
Mono in Both Ears.
Thank you for such a great review on J166. Could you tell me if it has a long battery life? thanks.
Expect around forty to fifty hours on a set of Alkalines at low-medium volume.
This radio is awesome 👍. Both on AM and FM.
Wow ! I own the Red version of this model.
Red is sweet.
You guys in America are lucky being able to get this radio for $12. Amazon Canada is selling this radio for $64.
On the bright side you have baby food so...
Order it on the US site. Shipping to Canada with exchange rate still under $30 CAD.
@@heyalbee Thanks!
Purchased this radio end of May. Not particularly thrilled with the design itself (location of dials, etc) but the sound was excellent and great reception across the dial. Worked perfectly until a few days ago when the one station I listen to for the better part of every day suddenly degrades and acquires an annoying pulsating tone (akin to car alarm or electronic crickets?) in addition to the radio programming. Not heard on any other station. Position of radio, or location of radio within apt, only slightly varies the intensity of the noise. Lasts for several hours and then mysteriously goes away, back to perfectly fine. Ideas as to cause?
I have had this on other radios, I just tune away up or down from the frequency, then back on frequency to eliminate the distortion. Could be an odd DSP behavior.
@@todderbert Tuning dial up/down didn't help, all other stations across the dial were fine. Lasted several weeks, and then one day just stopped, hasn't happened since (hopefully not jinxing myself).
Got the new one! Have the old one. Wow.!! Much better speaker! Now is as good as my Horologe hxt 201 and Sony p26. Wish they made the model as J-166 A. Also got a low powered AM station, during daytime. Most of my other radios dont hear it. Except this and the the Sony.
How does this compare with the FUHONGYUAN AM FM Pocket Radio
And the Goodes similar pocket radio?
I JUST BOUGHT THE RED VERSION OF THIS RADIO 📻 CANT WAIT TO GET IT I TYPE IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE OF MY BAD EYESIGHT
Now they have a Silver Version: amzn.to/47ibl5y
Here in the Philippines its being sold as Wodeke W-909 in Shoppee for $10.
Hello. I listened to your review with pioneer headphones. The new version of the receiver has a great sound, it sounds much better than the old version. Thanks to you, I ordered myself such a receiver on Aliexpress. Thanks for the review.
Just ordered the red model from Amazon
Hej Todderbert yep I just placed an order for this radio from Amazon I think it seems so robust and nice so it will be my first Prunus radio so then I have to wait a while before it arrives. But there will be more Prunus radio units I will buy think they have very nice different radios it was time for a new radio because it was a while since I bought a new radio I'll will check out your review again tonight of Prunus J-166 new version FM / AM take care.
It has great audio.
@@todderbert Hej Todderbert I've just seen your review of Prunus' newer version J-166 again without the weather band and I was also impressed with how much better speaker sound it has than the previous model with the weather band has. It will be interesting to test the Prunus J-166 FM / AM version when it arrives it also seems to be well built I have to wait a while for it but Amazon usually delivers quickly to me in Sweden as well. Otherwise good but too much food and cake yesterday listening to some music tonight and yes now I'm 53 but a friend said it's just a number take care time for bed i think but hey drink Coca-Cola before going to sleep bad idea but good.
Nice review (: They seem to be a very good Radio these Prunus , could not help myself bought the Red J-160 as well as the gold (:
Helpful review! Over many years, have enjoyed using the crank style radios (Eton, Red Cross, Esky). Reliable for accessing local news/talk all day, every day, most often charged fast and efficiently via USB. (Also tried a VonHaus which had abysmal reception for AM.)
Unfortunately, most recent Esky lost its ability to charge only a month after purchase so decided to go back to 'old school' design and narrowed long list of Amazon choices down to this Prunus J-166, the Retekess PR15 and Horologe HXT201 (the latter two having fewer 1-star reviews on Amazon and rated fairly high by you). FM not a priority, no need for WB, have other flashlights so aiming for simple. Leaning toward smaller size radio and prefer price on low end. Have perused your reviews for all radios being considered, as well as others you've done, so curious which you would recommend as perhaps best option for reception for stations local to Los Angeles area (640 and 790 AM). Would you suggest something else? Would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.
For a pocket radio, the PR15 is good. Also the Sangean SR-35.
@@todderbert Thanks for your quick response! Recall having checked out the Sangean but will give it another look. The PR15 is currently first choice. ;)
I unfortunately bought the one with the WB and the speaker sound is the worst tinny I have ever heard. It made the radio unlistenable. I'm glad they fixed whatever the problem was. I expected more from Prunus.
I suggested to them to change the speaker on the WX model. Hopefully that will become a reality.
Они эти приёмники не производят, если что. Это такой же бренд как Retekess, который просто продаёт продукцию разных заводов под своим именем, у них и модели есть идентичные.
Thank u again for cool reviews Todderbert!! Any chance u think they might come out with a WB version of this with the upgraded audio? I have the WB version u were comparing and would prefer to get this one with a WB function.
Not sure, but I emailed them asking if they would try to make it happen. Nothing yet.
@@todderbert Thanks for trying! Hope they listen, haha!!
is it a digital receiver on dsp ic? isn`t it?
DSP.
The P-26 boasted ~100 hours of listening time, what are you seeing from this?
when you have ear phones plugged in does it use that as the antena
I'm afraid no, only J-157 can do that
$9.99 on Amazon as of this writing.......why not add another portable "transistor" radio?! Should help me in the long lonely hours this summer in cleaning out a house.
This is a $32 radio here in Canada. Like most of the electronics sold in this country, they are outrageously overpriced compared to what can be found in the US. For around $10, you bet. For $32, not a chance.
Hello sir, how about tecsun r-218? Is it better?
I would say the Prunus is Better, though the Tecsun is an all analog radio.
This radio have fm stereo? (On headphones)
Sadly, not Stereo...yet.
@@todderbertstill sounds great!
Does it get weather
No, and I think they discontinued the weather model. Its speaker was too tinny.
New low price winner vs the Vondior I had to solder new resistors into?
I've just bought this radio in the UK for £7.99, what a bargain.
tears down price
Too costly here in India.. Appx. 31.5 dollars on amazon India.
