It's cause they start with the melody first, work on nailing that down, then add any accompaniment. Retro titles didn't have a full orchestral suite to work with, so the melody was forefront. They just emulated the *creation style*, and the rest fell into place.
The whole soundtrack was designed with 8-bit music philosophy then translated to modern instruments. 8-bit Music Theory explains this in details for Octopath's soundtrack, I highly recommend watching it. So it should come as no surprised that the soundtrack sounds good when translated to 8-bit
This is 10 months old, how did no one mention that you get to listen to The One They Call the Witch and Daughter of the Dark God for so long and how it’s a banger the whole way through? Especially considering you have to redo the fight multiple tries (there’s no way you beat it first try I won’t believe you if you tell me you did)!

Especially in Ophilia or Therion's stories. I love the transition sequence for both of them, though Cyrus' transition is no slouch either (I mean, seriously, transitioning from a somewhat tranquil waltz into a JRPG boss battle theme...not what one would expect.)
It was talked about a lot during its release but the community died off a bit after. Probably just because we beat the game and moved on to something else but I definitely feel it got the credit it deserved when everyone was talking about it.
So what would you think of me making Alfyn or Olphia the class of the other one? I am currently using Alfyn but I think at the end I may use Olphia for all path actions for main party.

Y'know, I somehow set it up so Therion never got hit at all when I played before. Every single thing was a miss. This remix though? This remix hits. It doesn't just hit though, it's a CRITICAL hit. I should have brought more healing items, entire party got swept.
HP and SP thief are pretty OP, I've found. Therion's almost always at full HP and SP for me, unless enough others die that he has to babysit them. Even better when the enemies are weak to knife.

My favorite characters in order are H’aanit, Cyrus, Primrose, Olberic, Therion, Tressa, Ophilia, Alfyn. I like all the characters, but this is my list of my personal favorites.
Ophilia is a great healer. Nice to have around. Cyrus is mildly OP, with incredible damage but low max HP. Tressa is the best character by far, because she’s adorable and her dialogue lines are the most precious thing I’ve ever heard. I chose her as my protagonist immediately. ...She’s well rounded in combat too. Olberic has great damage, and he also doubles as a tank. Primrose has some good buffing moves, and her damage buffs specifically pair well with Olberic and Cyrus. Alfyn is an amazing healer, and I love strategizing around getting low enough HP to use Last Stand effectively without dying first. Therion has a nice set of single target vampirism and debuffing moves, but no hit-all attacks, so he works best in bossfights. H’aanit isn’t outstanding in combat, but that one time that Leghold Trap saves your life is really satisfying. The beast capture mechanic is fun too.
I wanted to leave a comment but in my opinion it's better to not say anything except something because something is Always better than nothing so here: Something.
H'aanit is actually better than Olberic at physical damage output due to higher crit and accuracy. Makes her more effective with the multi-hit moves. That said, they're both very capable of maxing out their physical attack stat and either one will be a great warmaster. Olberic is better at the challenge action because he uses himself instead of monsters though, and he's an excellent duelist with a Thief subclass.
