Ain't no way I could go in the house sit down an rest or eat, knowing I had a hungry animal outside! I taught my boys that samething at a very young age. Wife use to say "you mean as hell, to make him get up from table and go out to feed his hounds"! ..BS! She just don't know!

Dad and I been hooking our rabbit dogs up ...heat lamps , extra food , hot water ,bedding ...any we can do to get them pass this cold snap . TheCATFISH1949. .. Mostly just Deer hunting for last few year's, I used to go over Caswell Co. an hunt with Hodge's guy's running dog's. I guess they all died by now, most was in there 50s or 60s back in the mid 80s. I handled dog's for'em, turn loose, gather'em up. Shit, they used to gamble on me, when I was 16or17. Dovehunt, 3 for 3 shots Dovedown! We didn't have these big shell's back then Deer doggin... Choketubes nope. It was just plain shooting, an better be Quick!
I live in northern Illinois, and we get extreme cold conditions in the winter. What you said about not using hay is correct. You need to use straw. Straw and hay are very different. Using cedar chips would be very costly for some to use. Up here we need to bed our kennels deeply with straw. Cedar smells wonderful tho. The downside of straw is the dust however shavings are also dusty. Fortunately, my husband grows are own oats for straw and it is chemical free. Our kennels have an insulated indoor room as well as an attached second room that leads to an outside dog yard. We get subzero temperatures in the winter, but our dogs remain comfortable. We breed golden retrievers which get a thick undercoat. Please use caution in extreme weather and check on your dogs often. Keep a thermometer in kennel to keep track of temperature.
When I come in from work I get out of my truck and go straight to the dog kennels everyday..my girl is like wtf..but that's the way it is

I got a 10x10x6 kennel. I put tarp around the kennel to keep the wind out. Then I put wheat straw in the house. Very comfortable for my dogs.

As a German shepherd breeder when the poo frozen like that water froze get a handle stick tape scarpper to it good scrap and broom it out
Respect to you brother. You right, it dang sure is a job. Anybody that handles dogs needs to show the same loyalty and dedication to the dogs as the dogs show you and take care of them the right way. It makes it easier for the dogs to work and do what they're trained to do when they're taken care of the right way. Good hunting buddy.
the only thing i would have added to your set up would be privacy fencing or a way to cover that back of your runs its would make better temps and keep snow dust out.. i see its been a couple years so youve probably updated since. looks good man

I couldn't find cedar chips either but a local hardware store had pine chips. It was just as fluffy as Cedar and worked great for mine. We only got down to low 20's but that was a big change for our normal temps. You must work them oil rigs lol! I wish I could have a pack that big and pens that nice. Fine setup you got buddy! I need a different job lol!

Redbull we cant run deer hounds in wv but in louisiana we run the hell out of them yall ever need any standers i sure would love to be in on a good deer race..I love to sling them 000 buck hell yea ....

I heard that was a good feed. Ive been on victor but with so many dogs I been trying to look around for a better deal with a quality as well. I like victor because it’s a easy clean up with the poop solid stiff

Sorry, but these dogs are suffering. They are short haired dogs, so you cant keep them at freezing temperatures outside. The other thing is metal dog houses made from metal barrels. Metal attracts cold, so they are actually freezing them inside rather than keeping them warm like in wooden dog houses. ...Please change dog houses so they at least can warm...Metal and plastic attracts cold....
And keeps ur dogs from getting caccida
