Amazing. I tried to clone my disk using another product and althought it did clone it exactly, it didn't boot in the new laptop and just gave the blue error message screen. This method is 100% genuine and works. The only thing i have found is it doesn't keep the wireless details in but that's not an issue as you can export your old wireless profiles from the old machine and import them into the new one. I managed to get a working computer using this method. I started with a 2013 Dell Inspiron touchscreen AiO 23.8" Corei5 and imaged the hard drive with Reflect Free and then moved it to a new 2016 Dell Core i3 model with zero issues. Even the Win10 Registration remained intact. I was super pleased and relieved that it worked. So I can confirm that it works in that scenario. Well done with the tutorial, mate! Hey, Michael, thank you 😊 and I'm glad it worked without any issues. It does save a lot of time and effort otherwise you would have to manually transfer all files and settings and programs over to the new laptop computer, a tedious task.
The only hiccup in the process was not realizing that I needed two partitions on the USB boot flash drive, one MBR FAT32, and the other NTFS, in that order. It wouldn’t be recognized by the PC until I made that change. All in all a very pleasant experience!
Just did this today and worked like a charm! However, I bought a new laptop, with Windows 11 loaded and I just followed his steps, using the newest version of Macrium software, still creating the USB boot drive and saving all the other data on an external hard drive, and was able to override the existing software on the laptop to be a dead clone of the desktop. THANK YOU!!!
Glad to see this method still works. One thing I'd love to know is, what about activation? Did you have to re-activate windows on your laptop after cloning or it activated by itself?

I have a Western Digital WD Elements 4TB External USB 3.0 Hard Drive, but it looks like I'd need both 1.) the External Hard Drive to hold the image of the Desktop, and 2.) a Flash Drive to hold the Macrium boot loader for the Laptop. Is this correct?

Because you don't have a operating system that works properly, correct? Which means you will still have to reinstall all of your apps again?? When I go to “Fix Windows Boot Problems” it shows the installed windows on the SSD Windows 10 Pro 10.0 | D: \WINDOWS so after I select next there are no active partition to select. Hi, so I was wondering if this can be done if all you have is the HDD of the original machine? I've already went ahead and tried but maybe my method was wrong. I don't have a second hard drive that I can clone it to, but I do have a working laptop with a lot of space so I used disk2vhd and cloned the HDD into a VHD file to work with VirtualBox. The only problem is when I tried to load into a Virtual Machine it would not boot, so I had to download an ISO and restore the OS to get it to work. The problem now is my programs don't boot correctly and I suspect it is because of the slight change in the OS (or maybe the drivers I'm unsure). I think the programs would work fine if the OS of the original HDD was cloned with the VHD, but I am unsure of how to accomplish this or if it is even possible with just the HDD. Would I need to do create a bootable rescue media using the HDD somehow?

When inside the cloning software, you chose "Image this Drive", not Clone this drive. Is that because you have other items on your external drive? I mirrored a hard drive from a laptop and it lists the same model name on the new desktop pc when I go to System>About. Now my custom built desktop PC is listed as an HP Envy notebook. If I click "Rename This PC", I can edit the model number itself, which I've done, but it still lists "HP Envy notebook" underneath it. I'd love to know how to change this.

I did some research and people are saying it's due to the hardware change. Is there any way around this? What about all the old drivers from the desktop? Do you remove all of them on the laptop? You didn't go to device manager to see if there are any issues?

I have a brand new Acer Aspire 5 (7i 11th gen) with a 1T NVMe. When I go to restore image (as you have done) MR cannot see the NVMe drive, thus I cannot restore the image where I have to. any suggestions? I tried different things but Macrium Reflect cannot see the drive NVMe. Please help me.
Thanks for this! :D I've been following the process and am at the stage where I have to boot my new PC from the boot recovery USB, and then get the image from my external drive onto my new PC's internal drive. Only problem is that my new PC can't detect my external drive (or the image file on it), but my older PC can detect it just fine. Any ideas why my new one can't detect it? Been trying to figure it out all day but it doesn't seem to work.
My apologize If you already know this part. With your bootable flash drive inserted/ Power up/press 'F_' or function key to enter BIOS/find boot section/change the 1st boot device to USB/ turn off 'quick or fast boot' if it's switchable or see it in the bios/exit saving changes (F10 key on most computers is exit&save)/if your computer reboots after saving, let it finish booting then power it off at the password screen. Wait aminute or two/power up/ if asked on screen hit yes or hit any key to boot from USB drive only if asked on screen. Boom ! if the flash drive doesn't boot it's not bootable/ format it/burn bootable image file using software that creates bootable media/before you burn to flash drive check to make sure you applied any settings, if u find anything, for creating bootable media.
Hi, can I back up my Windows 7 system on a laptop with the 2nd generation processor, and Clone it on a new laptop with an 11th generation processor? is it possible? what is the highest processor's generation could be done on it with windows 7 system?
No risk at all, if the hardware ID does not match (which it wont) Windows will ask for a new key or reactivation, at that point you can buy a new key from Microsoft. BUT what I have seen on newer systems, if the pre installed Windows edition is the same like if you are cloning from a digitally activated Windows 10 pro desktop to a digitally activated laptop Windows 10 pro laptop, then activation wont be an issue, Windows will activate by itself. For a newly built system you can clone from an old one, but you will need a new key from Microsoft.
Can you use this method to clone a laptop to another? I have an ASUS laptop, the hinges cracked open and the power socket is loose, resulting in loss of power if the plug is moved. I also have a Dell laptop with a busted HDD. Rest of the hardware is functional. I know I can't just swap the HDDs. I can't buy a new laptop right now and I need one. Could it work?
You can, I have a test SSD which I use to troubleshoot systems and the same SSD works fine on different PCs, so yes you can. Although you will have to re-activate Windows and any other licensed software on the other laptop.

A permanent watermark that says "Activate Windows" and all Windows customization features like themes and wallpapers wont work. Other than that Windows will remain fully functional.
I followed your steps, did image of desktop to hp mini desktop After I restored the image to the mini desktop(NVME) I can't do the fix windows boot step.. it won't detect the mini desktop NVME anymore Anything I can do to fix it? I took the NVME off and used it as slave on other pc and it won't show when trying to fix windows boot I tried to boot and it says there's no boot device.. it shows the NVME in the BIOS
Hi, I have rare business program on older XP laptop and i want transfer it and use it on newer different hardware laptop with windows 7 OS installed. I lost installation setup CD of that business program, so how can i transfer and use that program from older to new laptop?
This did not work. After everything, I get message, "Selected boot image did not authenticate. Press Enter to Continue" and then my HP Laptop just shuts down. Tried online "fixes" to that particular error message, but to no avail. Also, I tried "Fix Boot Problem" again and there is a red X next to "Updating Partition Boot Sector". All others have the green Ok arrows. Not sure what that means, but this DID NOT FREAKIN' WORK Charlie! Ugh! AFTERMATH: I just re-installed the factory Windows 10 and it's back to bare bones "new" config. Oh well, too bad this didn't work from ACER desktop to HP laptop.
Old drivers get replaced automatically, I've done this countless times, had issues only once, which can usually be fixed by booting into safe mode and un-installing drivers causing problems, then your PC will start up normally and Windows will re-install proper drivers.

Is the license key the same as the product key? If yes, When i transfer the first laptop's windows 7 hard drive to the second laptop that was manufactured to run windows 7, can I use the product key sticker on the back of the second laptop to activate?
Yes, you can, this is the way I do things whenever I fix someone's laptop or desktop, I use the product key/license key which is on the sticker on their machine to activate Windows. This won't be an issue on Windows 8.1/10 though, they activate by themselves.
@@TechGuyCharlie I tried to download the exact macrium reflect v6 in your video but the v6 download automatically upgrades to v7. On the v7 when I choose CREATE BOOTABLE RESCUE MEDIA, the options I have to pick are all different. It doesn't have ENABLE MULTIBOOT SUPPORT. Can you try this version and reply the directions back to me? Unless you can find a link where I can download the v6 and reply that one back to me. I did try this v7 out in every way I can onto the usb but when I inserted it into the second laptop and boot it from the usb, a INVALID SYSTEM DISK REPLACE THE DISK AND THEN PRESS ANY KEY message shows on the screen.

did you understand that he was cloning it and boot drivers are same as the target one's, boot into MSDaRT and try removing some boot critical drivers and then add boot drivers for your device
I tried it 3 times. Everything went well until Fix boot drive. Nothing showed up nor could i find it. wasted my whole day. I must have done something wrong but followed this to the letter
When on Macrium Reflect I click "fix windows boot problems", then "windows 10 pro", then "next", then "disk 1 windows (c)", then "next", then "finish" on "boot code options", then under "Running Tasks", I get a "X:" on "partition boot sector". When restarting PC, no bootable device found. Can you kindly clarify?

if yo try to install that hard drive onto another computer different than the one you take from, it won boot. Macrium software needs Windows to be running on the computer you put the Hard Drive in. The only solution you are left with is to get a computer with the same specifications as the one that crashed, boot to windows ( the hard drive you took from the crashed computer will find the exact configuration and work with it as if it were installed on the crashed computer when it was operational). If you want to move to a faster computer, you can use Macrium to do what the video shows). I hope this help Good luck. (look for a second opinion from t he tech guy Charlie to be sure)
This doesn’t work like it should. The image of a desktop will not run on a laptop because thee systems hardware and software are not the same. Ok, so I will try it again and will be back.

If you clone a dell computer to another dell computer, you don't need to activate windows. Not sure if other brand would work like that.

I have a windows tablet (full windows & pc specs) with one usb port. Should it work with a usb hub?
You can use driver pack online or HWINFO for the drivers of the laptop to be precise for the drivers and prevent BSOD. Nice video by the way. Thanks

Only problem is that my new PC can't detect my external drive (or the image file on it), but my older PC can detect it just fine. Any ideas why my new one can't detect it? I have the same issue with a Acer Aspire 5, and it doesn't have the option to boot from USB.
What about just make an disk image file and install it as an image with out the clone software ?

My apologize If you already know this part. With your bootable flash drive inserted/ Power up/press 'F_' or function key to enter BIOS/find boot section/change the 1st boot device to USB/ turn off 'quick or fast boot' if it's switchable or see it in the bios/exit saving changes (F10 key on most computers is exit&save)/if your computer reboots after saving, let it finish booting then power it off at the password screen. Wait aminute or two/power up/ if asked on screen hit yes or hit any key to boot from USB drive only if asked on screen. Boom ! if the flash drive doesn't boot it's not bootable/ format it/burn bootable image file using software that creates bootable media/before you burn to flash drive check to make sure you applied any settings, if u find anything, for creating bootable media.

No risk at all, if the hardware ID does not match (which it wont) Windows will ask for a new key or reactivation, at that point you can buy a new key from Microsoft.
BUT what I have seen on newer systems, if the pre installed Windows edition is the same like if you are cloning from a digitally activated Windows 10 pro desktop to a digitally activated laptop Windows 10 pro laptop, then activation wont be an issue, Windows will activate by itself. For a newly built system you can clone from an old one, but you will need a new key from Microsoft.
also if you have to buy a key for windows I would actually use ebay I have been buying keys from there for years at about $2-5

You can, I have a test SSD which I use to troubleshoot systems and the same SSD works fine on different PCs, so yes you can. Although you will have to re-activate Windows and any other licensed software on the other laptop.

A permanent watermark that says "Activate Windows" and all Windows customization features like themes and wallpapers wont work. Other than that Windows will remain fully functional.

After I restored the image to the mini desktop(NVME) I can't do the fix windows boot step.. it won't detect the mini desktop NVME anymore
Anything I can do to fix it?
I took the NVME off and used it as slave on other pc and it won't show when trying to fix windows boot
I tried to boot and it says there's no boot device.. it shows the NVME in the BIOS

This did not work. After everything, I get message, "Selected boot image did not authenticate. Press Enter to Continue" and then my HP Laptop just shuts down. Tried online "fixes" to that particular error message, but to no avail. Also, I tried "Fix Boot Problem" again and there is a red X next to "Updating Partition Boot Sector". All others have the green Ok arrows. Not sure what that means, but this DID NOT FREAKIN' WORK Charlie! Ugh! AFTERMATH: I just re-installed the factory Windows 10 and it's back to bare bones "new" config. Oh well, too bad this didn't work from ACER desktop to HP laptop.

Old drivers get replaced automatically, I've done this countless times, had issues only once, which can usually be fixed by booting into safe mode and un-installing drivers causing problems, then your PC will start up normally and Windows will re-install proper drivers.

Is the license key the same as the product key? If yes, When i transfer the first laptop's windows 7 hard drive to the second laptop that was manufactured to run windows 7, can I use the product key sticker on the back of the second laptop to activate?
Yes, you can, this is the way I do things whenever I fix someone's laptop or desktop, I use the product key/license key which is on the sticker on their machine to activate Windows.
This won't be an issue on Windows 8.1/10 though, they activate by themselves.
@@TechGuyCharlie I tried to download the exact macrium reflect v6 in your video but the v6 download automatically upgrades to v7. On the v7 when I choose CREATE BOOTABLE RESCUE MEDIA, the options I have to pick are all different. It doesn't have ENABLE MULTIBOOT SUPPORT. Can you try this version and reply the directions back to me? Unless you can find a link where I can download the v6 and reply that one back to me. I did try this v7 out in every way I can onto the usb but when I inserted it into the second laptop and boot it from the usb, a INVALID SYSTEM DISK REPLACE THE DISK AND THEN PRESS ANY KEY message shows on the screen.

You dont need to format the new computers hard drive, the cloning software does that when you restore the image.

did you understand that he was cloning it and boot drivers are same as the target one's, boot into MSDaRT and try removing some boot critical drivers and then add boot drivers for your device

When on Macrium Reflect I click "fix windows boot problems", then "windows 10 pro", then "next", then "disk 1 windows (c)", then "next", then "finish" on "boot code options", then under "Running Tasks", I get a "X:" on "partition boot sector". When restarting PC, no bootable device found. Can you kindly clarify?

if yo try to install that hard drive onto another computer different than the one you take from, it won boot. Macrium software needs Windows to be running on the computer you put the Hard Drive in. The only solution you are left with is to get a computer with the same specifications as the one that crashed, boot to windows ( the hard drive you took from the crashed computer will find the exact configuration and work with it as if it were installed on the crashed computer when it was operational). Nope, it will not. The hardware is completely different so you will need a new Windows 10 license.
This doesn’t work like it should. The image of a desktop will not run on a laptop because thee systems hardware and software are not the same. Ok, so I will try it again and will be back.
