    We're so lucky that this beautiful score was discovered in 1982... and we're so lucky that you uploaded this performance to UA-cam. The members of the Brodsky Quartet: Daniel Rowland and Jacqueline Thomas, and the pianist, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet couldn't have played it better, what a lyrical version of this juvenilia piece by the one and only: Claude Debussy (l'enfant terrible). Thank you !!!

      although it's beautiful I can understand why debussy didn't publish it. It only has clues from his sound and not his sound itself

      Mia Feigelson if I'm not mistaken, it was Prokofiev who was dubbed "l'enfant terrible". Or perhaps they both were.

      there is a string quartet, but as the music only needs two string instruments, two members (D. Rowland and J. Thomas) play in this. And the pianist is invited, as the music also needs a pianist.

      @@YotamIshay it’s great you seem to know “his sound“. I think it’s totally in his style and great music. There are many more reasons not to publish a piece. You should read about Brahms burning a not small amount of his compositions, leaving us questioning how many masterpieces we lost.

      @@serafin1719 I'm actually very familiar with his music and it has greatly impacted my writing as a composer a lot too. When I was 12 I came by a CD with some of his pieces. Following that, I became obsessed with his music and listened to every available piece of his in my teens. His style here reminds me more of Faure than his own music. The rhythmic language and the phrasing are there, but not so much the harmony, which he was insanely innovative with later on. I know about Brahms, but Debussy is not Brahms. This is a very early piece. I find it more frustrating that we will never be able to listen to the chamber pieces that he planned and only finished a few.

    Un plaisir d'écouter cette œuvre pleine de charme et de poésie du tout jeune Debussy. Je crois qu'elle date de 1880 plutôt que de 79.

    Astonishingly beautiful Intermezzo movt. 17 years old composing such gorgeous melodies many of which are thread throughout the work along with the triplet rhythms.

    Surely, Debussy need not have suppressed this "youthful" work, and it's a mistake to dismiss it as "juvenilia." Perhaps the composer was dissatisfied with the transparent tunefulness of the piece, which shows some Russian characteristics, and makes it a wonderful "salon piece." But there are many style features that are typical of the mature Debussy, and were this trio by any other composer, we wouldn't hesitate to let it take its place in the chamber music "canon."

    If this were written by Fauré, it would be considered one of his best compositions. But then Debussy just HAD to go and become Debussy. The nerve.

      I would say this judgment is really unfair. Fauré's chamber music great masterworks (the piano quartet no 2 & the rwo piano quintets) obviously stand much above this trio. However, here we have a very charming piece, very well crafted, and with an amazing sense for balance, textures and proportions. No mean feat indeed for such a young composer, and certainly deserving more than the disdainful 'salon music' label.

      Au contraire -- some of these images are certainly snapshots. The first image is of Debussy at the home of his friend, the poet Pierre Louÿs. The woman in the photo is Louÿs' lover, Zohra bent Brahim.

    • @morganmanifaciertenor
      @morganmanifaciertenor 8 років тому +2

      He did, but not in 1880. My previous comment is a mistake, he did write this piano trio on a summer trip with the von Mecks, but it was either in Switzerland or in Germany. Debussy met the von Mecks in Russia the following year, before journeying to Vienna later on in the summer.
