Au contraire John your body of work in the 80's and 90's was really really good! ''Scarecrow'' remains one of fmy favorite albums of all time. I know Springsteen is the bigger ''star'' but I`ve always identified with John's music more for some reason. Say yeah yeah yeah :)

Springsteen isn't half the artist John was and still is.
It’s a case of “less is more”. Less words, keep it simple.

This is a man that didn’t forget where he came from no matter how huge he got. That’s 100% HUMBLE in my book. He sat there and said his music wasn’t some of the best but I totally disagree. John is just that humble. Amen brother. Amen.

I wish he didn't smoke. So bad for you and he just doesn't care. Sorry but the cigarette cough is scary. Aside from that I love his art and music. I heard him recently and the voice is gone bc of the smokes.

Why is everyone so concerned with his smoking? It's his life and he's an artist. One of the most accomplished writers, Raymond Carver, called himself, "A cigarette with a human attached to the end of it." Live and let live!

My father fell over dead in my arms from a massive heart attack caused by 60+ years of smoking. I had already picked up the habit from him but I quickly put down the habit from him as well because it taught me something. Dead looks painful..Although John is grown and I support whatever decision about his lifestyle he makes.
He is a giant creator. His songs are very meaningful to me.
Thank God for John Mellancamp. Just a killer songwriter, singer and he always has a great message to share. You go John!!! When people say 'legit' they mean people like you!

Lol right? World is more obsessed with other people's vices and deciding how they should live their life than what they've done and contributed with their life. No one would've said boo if he was sitting there sipping a whiskey or in this day and age a joint. 50yrs ago 45% of Americans smoked. He started when it was socially acceptable, obviously became addicted and never quit. People commenting like he showed up in this interview with 2 heads. He's a 70yr old man. I'm pretty sure at this point, or even in 1976 when he released his first album he probably didn't give a crap what other people thought.

I'm glad his daughter Teddy is healthy ! Too bad he doesn't take a heart to being healthy !! I am 64 and have lost so many friends to lung cancer . sad but true !
I 've been painting since I was a child and still do as an adult....I make and give all my art away to friends and family. I understand what John speaks about.

The song about a girl in KY, is a girl named Becky, I worked w/her, he came by the store,while in town,she went to spend weekend in Indiana, w/him (she took a girlfriend,w her)they stayed in guest house,he never called her back,but,she is just as beautiful as she was back then,I bet,if,he went to Versailles ky,and walked in her store,he would move on,from meg,no doubt,but bek got married,and stayed that way,probably why he is w/meg?that and cigarette smoke,sucks.

I believe when one smokes it is to cope with deeper emotional issues. I think, why does he need this "dirty" habit as he is living his art. He dives deep with his art, whether it is music or painting...why smoke???

A man true to his roots. Didn't go Hollywood when he made it big. Was born with life threatening birth defect. Big mass @ base of skull was removed. Lived 2 bring us all joy. His lyrics written by his hand, touches ppl 2 their soul. A true gift
With respect to JM but retirement was/is appropriated from the French in the 16th century. It was originally used in the
military sense to mean "withdraw to a place of safety or seclusion." I'm 73 and I couldn't agree more with with JM's
opinion about retirement: retirement= depression=slow death or suicide.
Reality is, if he is 67 and been smoking for 45 plus years, at this point it's silly to obsess over it, kind of surprised that is 95% of the comments. Most of the damage has been done here, if lung cancer or heart attack doesn't get him, something else statistically will in the next decade or so. The death rate is 100%, and the stress of trying to quit at this juncture can bring other problems anyway. Let him live his life.

been a fan for years saw him last month in concert no opening act but showed a documentary biographical film of his life and career that took ages (almost an hour) that would have been better aired on A&E
