  • This line is a 16 strand a little over 1mm so that it easy to see on video. Can super glue the neck of the splice when done. Was supposed to be 2.5 mm 550 lb, but wound up being closer to 1 mm and 350 lb on the load cell, (so order small samples from unknown vendors in china)

I used UHMWPE braided lines for the World kite altitude record.Te first line I used was 11,000 metres of Spectra 900, 200 lb, 8 weave. This was manufactured by Innotex in the USA from fibres made by Allied Signals. The line was 0.8 mm diameter which always should be measured under constant tension . I measured under a tension of 33% of the claimed breaking strength just to be consistent with my comparisons between various lines.
The next line I used was SK75 Dyneema 300 lb, 8 weave hollow braid, manufactured by Amika of Taiwan from fibres produced by Toyobo in Japan under licence from DSM Dyneema in Holland. I used 12,000 metres of this line over many altitude record attempts. This line was 0.8 mm ex factory but after stretching and bedding the full length over a dry lake bed, was 0.72 mm average diameter. Line was supplied in continuous lengths of 1,000 metres so splices were required. After poor factor splices with 50 mm overlap on the Spectra line, I adopted a practice of using splices with an overlap of at least 100 times the line diameter. An 0.8 mm line would be lapped 80 mm and a 1 mm line at least 100 mm. In practice I used 100 mm overlap for any line under 1 mm.
The next line was provided under sponsorship from DSM Dyneema of Holland with SK75 fibres supplied to Cousin-Trestec in France who manufactured a total of 32,000 metres of line consisting of 100, 180, 250, 350 and 550 lb breaking strengths. All were 8 weave hollow braid, ranging in diameter from 0.6 mm to o.9 mm.
I have numerous other other UHMWPE lines made in China and they are relatively speaking, rubbish. I purchased 10,000 metres of line from Jeely in China and this was equivalent to flushing $1,500 down the toilet. Their line was supposed to UHMWPE equivalent to Dyneema SK75 but 200 lb line broke at 160 lb. It also was not hollow braid so could not be spliced. I suspect they mixed Dacron braid, probably as the inner parallel fibre. DSM Dyneema has successfully prosecuted companies counterfeiting Dyneema and using their trade name illegally. I wouldn't trust any Chinese lines unless I visited their factory, saw the fibre being produced and saw the finished line being strength tested. I splice any lines down to 0.3 mm diameter and lines with a diameter difference of 40%, Above that and it is very difficult plus I don't use line with a large difference in their breaking strengths. I will use branch lines on our kite train record attempts and lines will be 300 lb, 500 lb, 700 lb and 1,000 lb. The branches will be spliced similar to long line fishers. I use Daho splicing needles and also high tensile thin wire.
The problem with the Spectra factory splices was the 50 mm total overlap. My line at the time was stored under direct tension so the splices were compressed and became unlocked before the line came off the reel. I later converted the storage system to low tension and used greater splice overlaps. I also use a hot cuter to melt the line ends. Your Superglue gives the same result.
I am currently sponsored by Toyobo of Japan who have ceased their licence with DSM Dyneema and now are making their own fibres called IZANAS. They have an equivalent to Dyneema SK75 called IZANAS SK 71. They have a new fibre which is called SK 81 and is about 9% stronger than the SK 71. The line will be braided under sponsorship by Tasline in New Zealand and their lines will be vastly superior to Chinese lines and better than or equal to any lines from Dyneema or Spectra. I now have accumulated over 50,000 metres of high strength lines.
