"A lightsaber blade is comprised of some form of matter ("plasma bent by magnetic fields" being a popular notion), so it will block light even as it emits light. ... So, even though it does emit light, if it is blocking an even brighter source of light, it would cast a shadow" - From the wiki
@@Jujudocine Good idea, bringing fire up. It illustrates the point well. People can google what fire casting shadow looks like, unlike with lightsabers.
Sometimes I finish these videos and then look at how many hours they were. It's really incredible considering how hard it is to get through some ten minute videos by others.
I'm gonna say it right here: I think a light saber having a shadow is reasonable. Sure, it's giving of light of it's own, but as long as it blocks, or at least distorts incoming light enough, it would create a shadow. We don't know the physics behind a light saber, but it's clearly almost 100% opaque since we can't see what's behind it at all. Therefore it blocks, or distorts most of the light hitting it. And just the fact that it emits light on it's own isn't enough for it not to have a shadow. Fire also has a shadow in certain circumstances, and that shit is clearly mostly transparent. In fact, hot air alone can create a shadow of sorts because it refracts incoming light. And since a light saber is pretty hot, it might as well refract enough light to create a shadow.
I think it would depend on the amount of natural light present. For example: If there's no natural light whatsoever, it doesn't make sense that a shadow is produced by the light saber on any surface. If there's natural light with an intensity somewhat equivalent to the one emmited from the saber at a certain surface, then there should neither be any shadow If the natural light's intensity is superior to the one emmited by the saber at a certain surface, then it would make sense that a shadow is proyected by the saber onto the surface. Of course, taking in mind that a shadow is not necessarily lack of light on a portion of surface, as an area fraction with light intensity proyected on it lower than the rest of the object also counts as a 'shadow'.
