- John Akii-Bua won the 400m Hurdles Final in the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. He had very little competition experience, but nevertheless he won the final there, setting a World Record time of 47.82 s. A spectator handed him a Ugandan flag, and Akii-Bua accepted it and ran around the track with it unfurled, beginning a 'victory lap' tradition.

As a Ugandan I was so proud of his achievements. I met him at an athletics club meet in Kampala, so pleasant to talk to. It is true that facilities were not great in Uganda, but his coach was the legendary Malcolm Arnold who went on to coach Colin Jackson, Jason Gardner, Mark McCoy, Dai Greene, etc.
Probably my favourite Olympic champion of all-time, in my favourite event.
The first man to break 48..... RIP John Akii- Bua. He will be sadly missed.
He died so young
John aki bwa the greatest of all times from East African Ugandan the parl of Africa
This is absolutly insane considering this was done out of lane 1. Any 400 meter hurdler knows how hard that is to begin with, and at that pace, it would be so friggin hard.
I wonder what he could’ve done in ideal conditions? I believe he would’ve won the 1976 olympics in a new world record time! RIP ❤
My best ever am proud of being Ugandan
My uncle came in fourth in this race!
Your Uncle’s time of 48.64 seconds was very respectable especially for that era (1960s and 1970s)
A sad tale of what could have been....Will never forget the footage of him in the refugee camp, before Puma rescued him. Sadly missed. RIP John!
Growing up as kids we used to sing " akii buax5" I didn't know it was because he was a record breaking gold medalist! We have since got one more! Proud of him
3 more now
My kapchorwa boys are collecting them medals 🏅 like firewood
R.I.P John!
He was placed under house arrest for years in Uganda, because the Goverment in Uganda didn't like the attention he got. He was actually rescued by his sponsers "Puma" and lived in Germany until the troubles in his country finished.
He was also one of 43!!! children, his dad had 8 wives-
He dided in 1997 not even 50 years old-
LEGEND
Iwas only young at this time but i do remember watching Blue Peter and one of its presenters ran 100m flat whilst henry ran hurdles 150m and henry won this was an episode to show viewers just how fast the olimpians can run.
wow. what an Olympian
one of my idols
He would likely be dominating if he were born in this generation
10-4 to that. Showdown of a lifetime.
This guy's English is clean.thumbs up for Uganda
Yes, Lane 1 is horrible for this race. The far outside lane is also very difficult to negotiate - very hard to focus. John Akii-Bua's victory was one of my greatest Olympic memories as a kid. I've seen videos of the 'tracks' he trained on in Uganda; makes his accomplishment even more impressive.
My blood
My mentor
I'm just amazed that he was even barefoot
lol, my dad always told me about this, nice to actually see it.
LEGEND
apparently he had 47 brother and sisters!
big up Uganda
Sorry, 42 brothers and sister.
Its Dosent Matter What Lane You Start In ..400 Meters ,200 Any Race Just Because It Looks Like You Have A Head Start .. Its That Same Amount.....
He would have ben the best on 800 m too...
i dont matter what lane ur in. akii bua could have been in lane 8 and still win
This was racism at its best as he won his heat and still ended up in lane 1
Random draw back then - for everyone. Only more recently have they seeded the final by semi results. having said that, I have no way of knowing if there wasn't any funny business.
If I was an athlete I think I would prefer lane 1. It's psychologically morale boosting to see yourself 'catching' the rest
