- The great Edwin Moses finally meets his match in Andre Phillips as Phillips wins in a new Olympic record of 47.19 seconds. Behind him, Amadou Dia Ba of Senegal comes 0.04 away from scoring a monumental upset as he shatters the African record, running 47.23.
Future WR holder and Olympic champion Kevin Young finishes 4th in his first global final, while Winthrop Graham and Kriss Akabusi finish sequentially in the same order as they would 4 years later, albeit in 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
Congratulations to El Hadj Amadou Dia Ba, who got the Silver medal for Senegal 🇸🇳.
To this day he is the only senegalese to ever win an olympic medal ❤
I was a sub 48 flat 400 runner at D3 and it was Moses that inspired me to switch to the hurdles with the hope that someday I would just be in a field with him. I never got under 50 so it remained just a hope.
However, I became a student of the event and there were several things here that may not have been known at the time. After his gold in 1984 the event became much more competitive and Edwin knew it. The days of his low 47's were over and after 1983 his bests were high 47.3's and 47.4's. Still very good but guys were catching up to him.
Except for Worlds and the Olympics he started ducking guys like Phillips and Harris to preserve his streak; He didn't even compete in 1985 and was in fact beaten by Harris in 1987 and barely beat Harris and Schmidt at 87 Worlds. Also, as stated in the video it was Phillips who was ranked #1 in the world in 1986. So he was ripe to be beaten in 1988 and it was no fluke, the times run by Phillips and Dia Ba were easily faster than anything Edwin had run since 1983. And that was it for him, he retired.
But all that said it was Edwin who advanced the event that it's now a marquee staple and with Warholm, Benjamin, Levrone and Bol is at it's zenith.

Moses would also have taken gold in the 1980 Moscow Olympics had we not boycotted it. ...Without doubt the greatest 400M hurdler ever. Time finally catches up with everyone, even the greatest.
Yup. He won 107 consecutive finals! That is pure greatness in itself. He ruled this grueling event for over a decade. Also, a very classy man.
Absolutely. And had there been biannual World Championships in those days Moses would also have gold medals from '77, '79. '81' and '85 to add to the two that he won in '83 and '87.
Andre ran a PR by .32, he beat the Olympic record by .48 - and he did so in LANE 6! So, instead of focusing on "woulda, coulda, shoulda", how about giving credit to a man who more than met the occasion, did so despite his lane draw and ran the ONLY race he could have in order to be in contention: "catch me if you can." INCREDIBLE performance - by a man who went on to become a high school principal and earned his doctorate while serving in that capacity!

Played football with Andre at Silver Creek High school Varsity team. He was a great running back. He's a class act... So happy to see win gold. What an accomplishment!!

This is the beauty of track and field. It’s about MERIT. No polls, judges, or opinions.
Andre's brother, Leroy, worked for me back then in San Jose, CA. Leroy was so proud of his brother he brought the gold medal to work and gave it to me to hold for a day. It felt kind of strange and I locked the medal in my desk overnight. I gave it back to Leroy the next morning. I, as a runner in high school (lettered in cross country), and an avid track and field fan, was so jazzed to be a part of Andre's accomplishment and Leroy's pride in his brother I'll never forget this. I was invited by Leroy to attend a small local (family and friends) celebration of Andre's victory, where I met Andre. Thank you, Leroy.

The Norwegian now is by far the best there has ever been with rye Benjamin just slightly behind him and a Panamanian not far behind Benjamin who is far superior time wise than Edwin Moses ever was

I watched this live on TV at the time, pity Dia Ba couldn't end up catching Phillips, but I remember all the announcers were just visibly sad because they were witnessing Ed Moses' swan song. Great final.
Remember Moses would have easily won 3 straight Olympic Gold Medals but the 1980 U.S. Olympic Boycott prevented Moses from participating in that Olympic games. Moses was well past his prime by 1988. He is still the greatest.
Ed Moses should be still winning Olympics. He should have 11 Olympics 400m title.
James Smith he was also always clean. One of the administrators of WADA said the 1984 Olympics was the dirtiest ever. He said the USA was testing positive from samples tested many years later, including Carl Lewis. American athletes were protected in Los Angeles. Moses was clean always. Edwin broke his own Olympic record in finishing 3rd. At 33. You are right about 1980. Moses was at his best. Nehemiah was also unbelievable.

@ST 23 She surely was. She pulled up injured in a race early in the season and never raced again in 1980. Alice Brown was our #1 sprinter that year.
An interesting stat for this race. It consisted of THREE Olympic Champions. Moses (1976 & 84), Phillips (1988) and Young (1992).
Moses didn't compete in 1980 due to boycott,,,,he was 1976/1984 champion 🏆 yes?

I just met Mr. Phillips this past Sat. ( 2/13/16) @ The great Eddie Hart's Foundation dinner I sang at. I shook his hand...He still looks in great shape! It was in honer!
Not to take anything from the great performances of Phillips and Dia Ba, but Father Time played a significant part in that final. It speaks volumes when you have an athlete who set a world record in his specialty event on four separate occasions, remained undefeated for nearly a decade, and still competed on an elite level at the age of 35. Although his incredible Olympic run ended in bronze, his athletic legacy of superior consistency over time will far outstrip the man who broke his Olympic record and that of the only 400m hurdler to date to break 47 seconds, Kevin Young.

I met Phillips my freshman year of high school. He says his gold medal is sitting in the back of his closet somewhere and never really brings it out unless someone wants to see it lol
A terrific race by Edwin and it took an OR to win. Hats off to Andre for sure!! Edwin's run is unsurpassed...maybe would have had 3 Gold if not for the 1980 boycott. Today, Dr. Moses gets to see sydney mclaughlin-levrone make her run as today's best!

It was tough for Moses to lose after being the man all of those years. It would have been good for him to have congratulated Andre but it was apparently very painful for him to lose. Not easy to be a good sportsman, win or lose.

Moses and schmid were both past their prime by 1988 .
Very true - Ed was on the way down in '87 but just hung on to retain his world title in what was Schmid's last great year.
There's no certainty Moses would have won in 1976. He never got to race 1972 Olympic Champion and World Record holder Akii Bua there. The African Boycott in 1976 meant Akii Bua was absent. What a race between the two that might have been. Ah well. Maybe we'll see something special in Tokyo between Warholm and Benjamin.

Yep. Of course, four years later not only did he win the gold, but he won became the first man under 47 seconds. In fact, he was so far out in front that he clobbered the last hurdle and still destroyed the field.
I may have missed it but, did Moses even congratulate his victor?, he may have been a brilliant athlete but it appears was a bad sportsman. Whether you like someone or not, you must appreciate your fellow athletes.
I remember Moses speaking very highly of Philips after the race and congratulating him warmly at the medal ceremony.
Remember Ben Johnson ran 9.83 it was unbelievle fast, New world record. And then he lost it. Sad

12yrs after his first olympic gold in 76 robbed of another gold in 80 due to politics, and still took an olympic record and a national record to dethrone the goat
He would not beat Moses in his prime in 70s early 80s. Winning 100+ consecutive. Amazing and this with no one pushing him. Easily would have been under 47 had anyone pushed him like Kevin, who was a Young upstart during this time.. This race he was past his prime and still got third. I like Kevin Young but he never got under 47 again afterwards I believe. He surely did not win 100 plus consecitive races whoch is unheard of in todays era.
He did have people pushing him though. Danny Harris and Harald Schmidt were the 2 guys who managed to beat him, or at least push him.

He is in my opinion still the greatest 400 hurdle runner ever. 107 in a row at one point? We all have off days bit that's insane.
@@panama8009 I don't dispute Moses' incredible streak, but he was pushed on many an occasion. Schmidt being the main guy (who beat him in 1977). Moses had to be on point because guys like Phillips (who was rated no.1 in 85) Harris and Schmidt were pushing him every step of the way.
