I am generally a traditional grip player but practice alot of matched (left hand) grip it improves my traditional grip significantly, particularly with single strokes...
Keep at it. Make sure you're relaxed always. And experiment every way you can with all aspects of shoulder, arm, hand, and finger positioning, movements, tension (not tensing up, just light tension) and release. Great to learn techniques that work for great drummers, but also important ultimately to experiment and figure out what works to get you the playing you want. We'll be getting some "how to practice" tips up soon that may help too. Could also be worth booking some lessons with John. I used to think my hands were just slow too, but lessons with John got me way faster and better in every other way.
