High Density Backyard Fruit Growing: In Ground & In Containers

  • Using the method's Dave Wilson Nursery made popular I have taken high density in ground plantings of fruit trees further to containers. With roughly 5 gallons of soil worth of growing space pomes and stone fruit trees do wonderful in containers.
    Be sure to prune the center, select similar rootstocks preferably dwarfed & trees of similar fruiting/growing nature and you'll do better than expected. A great alternative to those that can't graft & a great way to achieve better pollination.
    Enjoy and I'm looking forward to an update in the summer months.

    I have an apple tree 🍏 🌳 I planted in my back yard; it’s small. So I needed a second one and found out you plant them close and keep them pruned down and still have a harvest.
    I like your 4 trees all together.

    I do 3 trees and the next year I plant a grapevine in the middle. Some Borage, peas and squash and I'm there. Just keep the squash stays off the trees. I plant about 2' to 2.5' apart. The trees act as a trellis for the grapes. I do prune a bit more. That's why I wait a year for the grapes.

      How interesting.
      How often do you fertilize, and water please? I'm curious as different trees have different needs. i.e. regarding the fertilizer, do you use different ones which are specific to each of your many different plants, or have you discovered one which serves all the many different plants and trees? I'm hoping you've discovered a way of keeping things simple.

    Happy Birthday Ross!
    We noticed today that we lost a good sized fig tree today...😣
    We're in Eastern Ontario(Canada)
    Planted the fig in ground last season and made a huge box out of plywood and lined it with styrofoam, made a top for the box, installed it over the fig tree, and covered it with a couple inches of dirt and a tarp. When we uncovered it, it was covered in mold...We are gonna leave it another couple weeks before we pull it out, to see if maybe some new shoots come out.
    Think it was just too long and harsh a winter. Or we left it covered too long.
    All our potted figs, that we winter in the garage, are doing well.
    A few freinds of the family have good luck with burying their figs.
    Might give that a try next fall

    • @RossRaddi

      Covering is risky business. Too much moisture and no ventilation equals disaster. Sorry to hear that :/

    • @heystevo
      @heystevo 6 років тому

      I'm guessing that new growth will come up from the roots. When I uncover my inground trees, sometimes they can be one mass of waterlogged leaves on top of the figs.....one to two meters deep. Once they are uncovered and allowed to dry, the trees almost always bounce back. What variety was it? Oh, and happy birthday again, Ross!!

      I believe its a white fig variety from Italy. It did really well in the pot, and last yr was the first yr it went into the ground. We were really hoping that it survived the winter...
      Our friends that bury them, get the best figs from those trees, compared to the ones they have in pots, same variety.

    After reading about 9000 apple trees per acre , I think that high density farming is a game changer. This is potentially a way to make a 1 acre farm compete with a 15 acre farm because the typical grounded fruit trees are 150-650 trees an acre. 5000-9000 trees in an acre is 60 times what some farmers are growing per acre. I think the best part to your strategy is you can also sell trees.

    Hey R, still loving these older videos. Looking back today at your example in this video (minute 7:19), do you still combine your stone fruit in one large grow bag? If so, how are they doing now that they are of fruiting age? If not, did they not survive or did you just change up your planting style?

I took the seeds and so far have made Ruby frost, sweet tango, fuji, pink lady, wild twist, snap dragon trees that are about 5 inches tall now and this week I got a cosmic crisp seed to germinate!! God I hope they are real varieties and not crab apple trees! I will find out in a few years

    Can you ever separate them in the future if potted this way? I imagine the roots will all be intertwined. I only ask because when it comes time to put these in the ground you may decide your want more space between them. I'm actually following your lead on this and doing something similar.

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  6 років тому +1

      After one year the roots are quite entangled. Not worth separating as I would have lost a lot of roots this way and potentially killed them. If that were the case, I probably have to take a saw to them and be very careful. It hadn't occurred to me about trunk spacing in those containers. What you mentioned Mark is definitely the plan. I think the best plan of action would be to stake them now so that they're at least on an angle away from each other.

      Hi, a lot of gardeners use those nylon gift bags you buy from the dollar store. They have a tie string which you tie around one fruit or if your fruit is a bunch say like Longans or Lychees, people use a bigger bag.

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  6 років тому

      Cougar98- I was also having major issues with squirrels helping themselves to my fruits also. Even worse, they would take a few bites and leave the rest. I purchased a have-a-heart trap for squirrels, use peanut butter as bait and started trapping them. I then drove them a few miles away and released them elsewhere. I was up to 9 squirrels in one season. What a difference it made. We were able to enjoy our fruits after that. Good luck.

      it works on pretty much anything as long as the species is the same as he mentions in the video. Growers do the huge 15x15 spacing for truck and equipment access but even they are starting to reduce the spacing and plant more trees per acreage.

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  6 років тому +1

      You certainly can. Not something I've done in the ground, but you can make it work in a warm climate. 1 tree per 5 gallon of soil. Stems from the base need to be limited.

    Hello Ross. I started a food forest this year. I've put 12 fruit and nut trees in my yard and garden. I live in Ct.
    That's a very cool idea to plant four trees together either in the ground or in a pot. I was wondering when you put three or four trees in a large pot like that. Do you eventually plant them in the ground? Or keep them in the pot in maintain their small stature?
    Thank you for taking the time to do your videos and answer our comments. Keep on Growing!

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  6 років тому +1

      The plan is to eventually plant them in ground, but you could keep them in a pot to dwarf them. Root pruning will be necessary every 3-4 years though once the trees become root bound. As for when.. you can stick them in the container like that as soon as you get them. Similarly aged and on similar rootstock.

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  5 років тому +1

      I wouldn't get dwarf rootstock. They are not long lived trees. Proper pruning will get your standards to the height you want. IF you had to get dwarfs, I have no opinion on which is preferred here.

      Thanks, Ross! I was just about to make an order for dwarf rootstock trees, so I’m really glad I got this message in time to stop me. I’m going to trust that dense planting and assiduous pruning will work for me. So, how do I approach AC Nursery (trees)? Do I just ask for a standard tree? Should it be grafted onto root stock? They may have the answers for me, but if you have some input I always value it. Thanks! Best, Best, Bonnie

    • @RossRaddi

      acnursery.com has some really nice ripening charts. I would recommend anything above a 10g for most fruit trees. Go with plastic. Semi dwarf rootstocks do well. Dwarfs are best if you're more patient.

    1, 1, 1, No! Excuse me. I, i, i,You did the work , you did the figuring. Now alls I have to do is ride your coat taìls.
    Putting trees on pots is the only way to go:
    As a barrier against grub infestation
    To be able to rotate the plant to promote leafing or fruiting on the otherside
    To be able to move them
    But ! But What? But we the neophyte don't know how small of a pot we can get by with and that's why we seek your advise and council. So four trees in a 25 Fallon pot. Did I say Fallon? No I ment gallon. 4 trees in a 25 gallon pot. Heavy pot even with light weight soil. A big pot ,but a pot. Factory made soil like peat Moss, vermiculite and what's that white stuff called? Styrofoam? No ! Perlite
    But it's not bio dee gradible. Who the hell cares about bio dee gradible you are planting them in plastic pots for crying out loud and the micro beeds are suffocating the snail-darter
    What's a snail darter? You milllimials get off your mother's couch and read a little history
    Where was eye? Oh yeah now I remember. Four trees in a 25 gallon pot two trees in a -a-a. Did you say a 16 gallon pot
