the VERY FIRST hot rod I EVER worked on as a kid: 1936 Chevy Truck that does AWESOME BURNOUTS

- We had a chance to visit my home state (Maine) a week ago, and I wanted to take the time to feature the very first truck that I ever got to work on, which is my dad's 1936 Chevrolet Truck. He bought it when I was very young, and it was a very long build process that took about 10 years, and this is the vehicle that I cut my teeth on when it came to building hot rods and custom trucks. My dad wanted this truck to look like it had been sitting in a barn for 40+ years, and he nailed the look, but what about the rest of the powertrain? This is also a sleeper, and the chassis consists of a 70 Nova front subframe, a mid 70's C-10 rear frame clip, and a car 12 bolt muscle car rear axle with 3.73s and a posi. The engine right now is a 400 small block, and its attached to a Saginaw 3 speed manual transmission. This truck is a blast, and of course, it does burnouts still.

LT you made homesick listening to your dad true Maine accent.....
Love the truck true sleeper!!
Not going to lie: this might be one of my favorite episodes. Don't get me wrong, the content so far is top notch, but "origin" stories get me right in the feels.
Here's your next build project.Put the brakes and trans in for your dad.
I would like to see video's of putting brakes and a trans in this truck.
@@Averagegunenthusiast That would be great to watch but what about three generations of the family wrenching on it together. I wouldn't miss a minute of that series.
@@Averagegunenthusiast Guy didnt want a 4 speed sounds like. WIth the torque it makes, doesnt need it. Front disc maybe but who is driving this at 80 on the fwy
All smiles watching this video! Thanks for sharing this.
Sounds like front disc brakes would be a good father's day present for old dad if you had someone that knew how to put it on his truck
I would drive this truck EVERYWHERE! So cool & your Dad is pretty cool as well!
Just flat out AWESOME!!❤😁😁👍👍💯
That's a beautiful truck!
It's nice to see family heirloom hot rods still running and being driven.
He kinda sounds like the Pepperidge Farm guy..😂
Love the truck! Love a burnout that doesn't start by standing on the brake!!!
Nice to see, Dad, son and grandson.
Ok we need a collaboration video with your dad working on a truck with you!!
That’s a boss truck!!
He’s got taste!!
Dad sure sounds like a Mainer. Thanks for sharing LT. Really cool stuff. Really cool dad too
I like everything about it
Yah more Theadless Truckin'!!! I was waiting for the burnout! Awesome sleeper truck!!!
Ha, it's like listening to my family... I've been in Utah since 1986, mom moved out here from Portland because there was a lot more work available. Thank you hill air force base.
That’s an awesome old truck! I love it!!
You're dad is awesome
467👍's up LT thanks again for taking us all along with you
What a badass truck!! A hot setup Qjet would really wake her up too!!!
You’ve got a faint accent still left! So great to see your dad, who inspired you. More family vids!
I would have never guessed you were from Maine. That was awesome watching the Old Man lay some rubber...👍👍👊😂👏😁💪
makes me smile just as much as it did back when I was a kid watching it
Love this LT! That would be a cool project to work on him with
LT, I bet your dad would like to do some burnouts in the ugly truck! I know one day I hope to show off my project to my dad. I can only hope he’d be proud of me.
Great story and nice to see your family
"Still has it to This Day!" How Cool this THAT?
Pops has a solid burn out, chirped 2nd too. Cool build
You're dad is cool 😎
Great video. Loved the tractors and you including 3 generations one video.
Awesome truck! Thank you for sharing such a Kool Build.
Thanks for sharing dude, cool build.
LT your dad is a fun guy, when he lit the tires I laugh so hard, I thought that was so cool, Aloha
he had a blast!
@@LawrenceTolman He built the perfect DD old truck. Unless the brakes are horrible I wouldnt change a thing. Putting all the modern garbage on there is going backwards on this one. Sounds like he put a lot of thought into it. Reliable durable, enough power to have fun
12volt conversion? if so Holley came out with some crazy bright headlights that look factory (not ricerish) ck into it. He would dig it..undetectable until he used them
Nice old chevy truck
That’s a real whiskey runner right there. 👍
sure it!
Enjoy your summer vacation in Vacationland! Your dad speaks like a true Mainer. I also went to race my first car at Winterport Dragway. I spun a rod bearing on the way to the track from northern Maine in my 1983 Toyota Celica and never got to run down the track.
Bummer, 5-speed I hope. Did you fix it? I had a 20R with a cam & some bolts ons in a Corona wagon, it was respectably quick.
@@rotaxtwin It had a 22R. I was able to drive it home and drove it another 5 months before the engine seized. As long as I didn't hold a steady speed it wouldn't knock. Light acceleration and coasting deceleration would keep a light load on the bearing and it wouldn't knock.
Pap still has it,,, awesome video bro
That is really cool story the truck is a great build!!
Now that was cool
Cool Dads, Both LT and his dad as well!!
Great episode!!
thanks a bunch!
That was pretty cool..
awesomeness on high 😁
Very cool old truck.
You need to bring that truck home. T56 and 4 Wheel disc and sniper efi it for pops. Than have him fly out and the 2 of you road trip back to his place. I did a east Texas to San Diego trip with my dad. I will never forget it.
2 bbl is fine gets good mpg I dont understand the need for EFI
One of your best yet LT!
Wow! This is an Awesome truck. Very cool! 👍❤️ By the way LT, great channel. And, Yes Dad, that was a good one!!
Very cool! I built a '36 around the same time as you guys. Mine was fenderless on an '82 Toyota pickup frame with a 283/Powerglide. Such a fun driver.
Great truck . Thanks for sharing
I like that it has a 3 speed Saginaw. I picked one up and it’s going behind the 355 in my 76 Vega.
He picked it up on my birthday lol
Great family truck genes 🧬 at work. Great episode. Your dad is a cool truck guy too. Lol
Awesome truck!
Always loved seeing this truck when I would drive by the shop, Lawrence. I knew a little about the story behind it but what a treat to learn about more details of the build! Awesome video, man. And gotta love the old man lighting em up! Savage! -Jon P.
Awesome! I had no idea that you were from Maine. I have been using your dad for glass work for 25 years. Also didn't realize that she was a sleeper as well
Boy, there’s nothing wrong with that 400! It hauls ass! Yes, it is a great sleeper.
Agree..comments about complicating it with an ls are rediculous. MOre to go wrong probably wont help mpg cranks longer to start etc. Dont fit the theme
THis is why noone should save them for the next guy they will just butcher them up.
Nice old hot rod
That's a good moonshiner build👍
So glad you have those memories with your Father! 👍
learned a lot from him over the years for sure
Very nice 👍
Amazing video!
thats awesome...
awesome truck 👍🏼!!
Very Cool.
Very cool 😎
Thank you for sharing your family. FYI, I have an old friend who lives in Camden ME.
Love that truck, had my eye on it since I was a little kid seeing it at the shop.
Fantastic
Honestly one of my favorite videos you've posted, love the family connection, history, and the truck itself is a simple, decently powerful and just plain cool build.
Hey love to see your family its folks like you all are what makes the world go around in my opinion. Keep up the hard work.
HAHA BAD ASS. I still have the first car I ever worked on with my dad...a '69 Mustang.
Right outta the Waltons, looks great.
One of your best videos to date, enjoyed the history lesson on your self. Plus the your dad and his truck is pretty cool.
Spent many summers in Camden! How awesome 👍🏻 great truck
When I was in High school in the 60's I was at one of my friends and another friend showed up with a 37 Chev PU. I was immediately hooked. after graduation I spent a few days and my aunt and uncle's farm I found a 37 in the pasture. I let them know I'd like to have it. But they told me it would be there only son's. 10 years later he was killed in a car accident (not his fault). I knew things were raw so I didn't say anything. 10 years after that my aunt asked if I was still interested. I snapped it up immediately. Brought it home and started working on it with my dad. But he died suddenly and then I went through some life changes. So fast forward to 2019 and I brought it to South Dakota after storing it for a few decades in my mom's garage. I've boxed the frame, Fatman MII front end and an LT1 with a 5L80 out of 2014 Silverado..
I also have a 1936 chevy truck all fix up it's the only year chevy made a high cab and low cab you and I have a low cab AC and power windows v8 👍
awesome!
Bro you’re a mainer 😯 lifer here 🙋🏽♂️
yessir, born and raised
Nice!! Great story... :-)
I love it! I really love this style of vehicle. It's not too fancy on the outside, but not all beat up and rusty looking either and it does awesome burnouts!!! You should do some kind of a build on an older vehicle like this sometime.
Great
Lawrence, respect to your father. Cherish the time that he is still here very well spoken and a intelligent person. I wish that I could see my father more often.
P. S. Does he live in the Amish country? That old G20 chevrolet van is he interested in selling it?
Man that's a perfect ute. Great video, it sure paints lines up the road no problems. I love the landscape aswell very nice country side.
Glad you enjoyed it
Really excellent build. Love that it gets so much use too. Thanks for sharing.
Great State O Maine
Great video 👍👍
This comment is algorithm chow.... what else can you say about a great family video!
OG
Awesome content. I’m hoping that will be my son and me one day as well.
Welcome back to Maine! If you ever do go ahead with an overdrive trans I’ve got a 1995 NV4500 2wd sitting in the garage that I removed from a truck, has 110,000 on it. Repainted red and black. It came from a c3500hd so it has the park brake on it. I bought the truck bc it had a bad engine and I wanted the chassis. Never really had interest in selling the trans but if a good guy like your dad was interested I’d talk about. Located in southern Maine
Put a 4bbl intake and carb, better fuel milage because front bbls are smaller and have smaller jets but back two bbls have larger jets and more cfm for power, finally proved this to my dad years ago, 4l80 trans has overdrive, or its predi don't needd elecrtonics!
Disagree. no way will a 4 bbl get better mpg overall. No secondaries opening when he floors it.
your father's accent is so thicc and different, i like it
it sound's like a British man from the 70's, like a Fred Dibnah but i can actually understand him
👍
Beautiful truck. Has that ole farm truck look. You gotta LS swap that truck for your dad and put a OD trans in it. Supercharged LS would be sick. Leave the skinnies on it and do some cutouts. Put a modern brake system for safety.
that would be awesome
ls in that? Truck would be ruined, why complicate it
Camden Maine? Grew up near there if so
Nice Truck.
What year is the Tractor?
One of the first things I ever drove was my Grandpas 1950 Ford 8N.
That’s how I learned how to shift gears.
Maybe a GM A833 or T56 trans? I love it.
Dont think dad would like it? He picked an iron case trans for durability, 400 tq pulls it just fine plus the shifter would be too far back
LT, I forgot that you are a mainer originally, I love the truck and your dads accent is very cool, i do a lot of business in that part of the country and they make fun of my southern accent.
His dad sounds pretty normal to me, but thats pobably because i'm from maine.
I think you should "steal" the truck (obviously with help from the police for when he calls) and put in that over drive transmission and brakes he wants!
that would be a fun overhaulin kinda build
@@LawrenceTolman my thoughts exactly
Love the chirp going into 2nd. How did you avoid that accent?
I've been away for too many years
@@LawrenceTolman Too bad, I would have loved that accent along side the deep southern drawls of Tommy and Jeremy.
I believe that's a second half 36.
Dont make it something its not..or Dad woulda done it. Stick with the build plan/theme
Improve driving, safety, reliability and anti theft. Hes already done the rest.
(Id do undetectable stuff that goes with the build theme. He obviously put a lot of thought into it. )
Unless hes over 3k on the hwy he doesnt need OD can tell you from experience.
HEI distributor perhaps? Would he like a hyd clutch, bad knees?
Hidden kill switch he can use where he cant be seen leaning over or? to activate it.
They also sell fuel shutoffs that work via a keyfob. Keyless door locks?
Heat shield for hot restarts on ethanol fuel. Easy to buy or make your own.
Holley makes some visually identical headlights that are super bright when on.
High output alternator is a plus keeps the same look
Front disc easy. May need to use wheel spacers as disc might move the wheels inboard
QUicker ratio steering PS box....all this is bolt in stuff undetectable
Heater if it doesnt have one?
Driveshaft loop, spicer ujoints, good safety items.
Case of Valvoline VR-1 or other fav high zinc oil, couple Wix filters, practical.
If its passed down to you when hes gone then do what you want
If it were mine and I could do whatever I wanted. Brake upgrades of course, LS with a 6 speed manual and AC, oh and wide chrome wheels.
