Monica just suddenly found form out of nowhere that Spring of 1990. She'd had some really disappointing losses earlier in the year: *Didn't play the Australian Open *First round loss to Ros Fairbank 6-3, 6-4 in Chicago *Blown off the court 6-3, 6-0 to Navratilova in Washington * 6-1, 7-5 loss to Gildermeister in Boca Raton It all turned around at the Lipton tournament in Miami. Monica found her path clear of Steffi (injured), Martina Navratilova (absent), Gaby (lost earlier in the tournament), Jennifer Capriati (early loss) and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario (absent). That win seemed to give her so much confidence and she went on the 6 tournament, 36 match unbeaten streak. It was the longest unbeaten streak of her career.
Thinks clicked and everything fell into place for her at that time. Yet while it was her longest streak, I think her most impressive one was the 1992-1993 34-match streak as it included 2 slam wins and the YEC in the process.
wow, now that's (teenage) tenacity by Monica Seles: down 2:4 in the 1st set and then she just never looked back...great tennis spring (1st of many Grand Slams), until wimby quarters, win streak stopped by Zina Garrison-Jackson.
Thanks so much for posting this one. Awesome quality and what a great match from Monica in her breakthrough year.
