Anthony sees so much deeper into each musical situation he is in. Virtuoso is not enough to describe him.

Check out the old eyewitness project stuff with Steve khan . Nominally Steve’s band but a j reigns over all of it . Manolo badrena and the Steve’s are , of course , incredible on them as well .
His voicings and the crazy contrabass runs just blew my mind as a young guitar player .

Anthony Jackson is probably the only bassist that could play with Hiromi…she’s insanely amazing. What a duet/duo.

I particularly find Tony Grey even more impressive technically (my favourite Hiromi album is still "Spiral") though but I agree that Anthony Jackson sound is so unique and distinctive and he was even more amazing when he was younger playing with Michel Camilo. My favourite performance of Anthony is precisely in "One more once" Michel Camilo album, he was a beast back then.

@@BlueGlimpser Anthony Jackson is the reason I push myself so hard despite only starting now >50…Played bass a long time but never understood how important reading music can be…I don’t know where I heard. Bassist say it but they described a rest as a palpable piece in the music…simple as that and music sounds different than it ever did…never too old to learn…despite my traumatized brain…

WE would go to every gig. I love AJ. He is one with the instrument. Recorded on 1,000s of albums & hits. Has conviction & beliefs on the bass that are self evident. You would be hard pressed to find someone that has the same love, knowledge, expressiveness, amazing rhythmic concepts, and kick ass mentality on the bass guitar. I can promise you this man will not be duplicated.

Intriguing and exceptional way of accompanying on the bass like very few. I say very few because likewise Abraham Laboriel is also known for his unique accompanying and improvisation approach but as a bassist myself I like to listen more to a certain melodic approach when it comes to soloing, only some bassists like Pipoquinha, Feraud and or Malaman to name a few, truly exhibit this kind of approach on the bass. Nonetheless, Anthony Jackson is legendary in his own way. He has set a footprint in jazz music, his works can be heard on many fundamental (if not, pivotal), modern popular jazz recordings. Yet i lean more to the melodic bebop, avant- garde fusion language improvisation approach. What for example Pastorius does in his solos on havona or Donna Lee intrigues me very much more. A lot of math but also a lot of feel.

@ 1:16 Hiromi gives Anthony and Simon a look about the break that's coming up. @ 1:27 She gives Simon a look that says "Yeah. That was okay". @ 1:29 she makes a mistake, and Anthony notices and gives her a look that kind of says, "Oh. So you play like that? Really?". Hilarious. I always wondered why his head popped up at that spot. This is how the top players talk trash during a performance. Phenomenal musicianship

The mids are really strong and makes this sound like a souped up P bass. For some of the their songs, I think it would have sounded better with a bit more sizzling highs. But that's just me.
Maybe it was the amp set up?
Still sounds good in this setting.
