THIS RIGHT HERE is what being a musician means to me. It is what I aspire to be. It is what I work toward every day. It is what I teach my students. It is my code.
STUDENTS OF THE DRUMS - In my humble opinion, this is THE MOST IMPORTANT video you will EVER WATCH!!
The man is almost as articulate with words as he is with notes!
Absolutly !!!
As with low notes to be precise, and we bass players know how much it’s difficult to have articulated and audible low notes.
I was about to comment exact same thing, only to find you beat me to it 😎👍🏻
He’s so intelligent and humble ! And with SOOOO much talent. What a wonderful speech.
100 procent true
Jackson is not only a brilliant musician; he's an extremely thoughtful person. This is one of the most considered and touching tributes I've ever heard.
I was in the room that night and I'll never forget how Anthony's words encapsulated something we all get from playing with Steve. Thanks for crystalizing our thoughts & feelings so eloquently, good sir!!! 🙏🏼
Would have loved to have been there! And thank you endlessly Will, for your amazing contributions to our musical world! Glad to have this moment to say THANKS to one of my heroes!!
Wow, what a speech! Of course, Anthony is also one of the most wonderful bassists ever to grace this planet. I'm not surprised that he's so articulate and intelligent. It fits with his playing.
In addition to his musical talent, Anthony Jackson is a true gentleman. Music needs more people like him.
In 1997 I had the pleasure to hear Michel Petrucciani with Anthony and Steve. What a fantastic concert.
RIP Michel Petrucciani. ❤
WOW. To hear one virtuosic genius talk so articulately, so admirably, so intelligently, so insightfully about what he has learned from another virtuosic genius, who happens to be a contemporary, is INSPIRING. Bravo Maestro Gadd!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Bravo Maestro Jackson!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I hope we will still have musicians like Steve Gadd and Anthony Jackson in the future and that they will not be replaced by A.I.
You can hear how much these two love each other when they play together. It's fascinating to hear Anthony put that into words, and he did it so beautifully! What an amazingly articulate man, as articulate with words as with music.
I now have deep respect for Anthony.
I knew he was a monster bassist, but had no idea at how unbelievably articulate & insightful he his.
The perfect tribute.
wow! Anthony Jackson is an amazing person. How articulate and kind.
I've always admired Anthony Jacksons bass playing but I never knew he was such a great public speaker as well as an amazing speech giver! What a beautiful tribute from one musical artist to another!
On Valentines Day 2014, Anthony Jackson, Wayne Krantz, and Keith Carlock played a tiny bar in Charlotte, NC called Smokey Joe’s Cafe. I stood about five feet from Anthony most of the night, and it was one of the most unreal music things I’ve ever heard. He’s unbelievably gifted. On the Mt. Rushmore of bassists.
That speech should've been given a 20 minute standing ovation. Beautiful words from one master to another.
What a great speech! As a bassist, it is a beautiful and magical thing to be in a session with a drummer who you get and gets you.
By far one of the most eloquent speeches about a musician that I've ever heard. I am a drummer and Steve gadd is spectacular by far one of the all-time greats no matter the genre of music
PRICELESS!! It takes a selfless human being at his caliber to publicly say these kind words in honor to a great friend.. without taking any credit to himself.. showing such respect in tribute to Steve. No ego whatsoever. The man speaks as how he plays! No amount of money can ever pay for this speech by Anthony Jackson who has influenced so many bassist to date since the 70's in honor to Steve Gadd. Two of my favorite Top Shelf influential musicians. Much respect Sir Anthony Jackson.
The master Anthony Jackson. So eloquent, totally accurate as always. This was extremely moving and powerful.
What a wonderful tribute. I’ll be watching this many times for further inspiration! Thank you so much for sharing this 🙌❤️
Anthony Jackson + Steve Gadd - two greats. Two giants in their respective lanes, and even better together! What a thoughtful, insightful speech.
Having been fortunate enough to record Steve on an album project I can say that I was just as impressed as Anthony was by Steve's creative genius. He always brings something to the process that ignites the creativity of the other players. It's really something to see it happen in real time. He's also a great guy which doesn't hurt.
It's fascinating to hear Anthony put that into words, and he did it so beautifully! What an amazingly articulate man, as articulate with words as with music.Beautiful homage in admiration to Master Steve gadd
Absolutely the most talented and creative bassist ever to play bass guitar. I met him once as he was developing the 6-string bass. Within months of meeting him, I wound up on the other side of an album he was featured on. I was also checking out Jimmy Johnson's development of the 5-string bass as well, around the same time.
Amazing! Jimmy Johnson is also an incredibly great and inspirational player!
This is true love. Thanks Anthony and Steve. Best rythym section of the last decades
To hear Anthony say that solidifies my feelings of Steve Gadds Drumming. He is not just a Drummer. He hears other instruments and arranges everything. He keeps things simple and explosive at the same time. Steve Gadd has risen over the years to be My Guy!
What’s so ironic is I was listening to these guys last night and for the 1000th time I feel the same about Anthony that he does about Steve. I’ve been playing bass for over 30 years and AJ is the one bassist I keep coming back to. The guy with no limits. Endless ideas. An approach that couldn’t have been thought of by anyone else nor can be mimicked. Anthony, you are that man on your instrument as Steve is on his. I’m glad I discovered your playing because it shows me anything is possible.
Well said!
Wow,Tony, this is a recording and yet I find myself clapping. What a wonderful tribute to someone with whom I also admire. Thank you!
I was fortunate enough to get to hang out with Anthony for nearly two hours, just the two of us, before one of his gigs. He could not have been nicer. He is a phenomenal human being and just extremely interesting to talk to.
What a fabulous tribute! I've seen him play live numerous times, and so of course I'm blown away by his playing but I'd never heard his voice. A few times I went to see him and Michel Camilo and El Negro (or Cliff Almond) at Iridium in Manhattan, I got there early and Anthony was there alone on stage tuning the gorgeous piano they had there. What a magnificent trio that was, wow
It's a whole other skill to be a great storyteller and Anthony has it. This is also a great tribute to friendship, which the world can never have enough of.
What an incredible speaker! That was a perfect, heartfelt tribute from one legend to another.
Reggae music, my primary genre, does not get a lot of recognition, but the interplay between the Brother, Carlton 'Carly' Barrett RIP and Aston 'Family Man' Barrett was magical and is so incredibly difficult to replicate. Carly taught bassists how to understand the communication not just from the kick drum, bit the high hat and cymbals. He would signal when to basically play legatto, with his intervals on hi hat, when to play allegro, on or behind the beat with shifting patterns on the cymbals, playing with that now signature crossed up reggae style. Gadd and Jackson embody this, I am looking for my Carly or Steve to this day.
Thrilled to hear AJ’s speaking voice for the first time!
As a 1980’s teenager I would run into the mall bookstore once a month and furiously slap through the pages of Bass Player magazine until I found Mr. Jackson’s column.
What is he gonna say this month? I couldn’t get enough!
I would read it right there at the news stand before always buying it & taking it home to pour over again & again.
Thanks for uploading this.
Great story 🙏🏼
I don't think there's much more to be said about Steve Gadd that hasn't already been said much better.
A musical legend. And AJ is no slouch himself.
What an incredible tribute from one great musician to another. Steve Gadd is the man.
What an incredible and thoughtful tribute to Steve Gadd. It's 6:40 Monday morning, Mr. Jackson's speech will inspire me this week and beyond.
Truer words were never spoken! The GROOVE MASTER!
Beautiful tribute from a maestro on the bass. Steve is in another realm. Which he is all too willing to share.
Beautiful ❤ Steve is actually tearing up by these words.
Say what you will Anthony. When you speak you sound like Duke Ellington. Bless you and your lifetime dedication.
I've ALWAYS Love
Mr. Jackson's Bass Virtuosity.
I always looked forward to Reading His "Strong View Points"
in Bass Player Magazine.
It's Rare to see Him
Speaking in Videos.
It's Great to start Hearing Him Talking
In More Videos.
Very well spoken from Mr. Anthony Jackson. Mr. Steve Gadd and Mr. Anthony Jackson are both outstanding and amazing muisciain .
What a respect coming from the best living bass player in the word❤
What a humble man...good on you Anthony! God bless you.
Awesome tribute to one of the best drummers/ musician of our time
Two masters of their instruments
This is special..... praise like this from a man who is such a virtuoso himself is beautiful to hear, Steve must have been touched by this.
Wow - what a tribute, and from a player like Anthony Jackson, no less. I had no idea how involved Gadd was/is with the compositions, but I guess I'm not surprised. The "best" is subjective and arguable at best, but Steve Gadd is one of a kind. Incomparable. I've loved his playing and tried (poorly) to emulate it since the mid-1970s - just amazing.
Beautiful tribute from AJ...their friendship shines through when they play together !
Beautiful tribute , you can feel the respect and humility. Rare qualities in star performers these days.
Wow that was incredible. To get that kind of praise from the likes of Anthony Jackson says everything about Gadd’s abilities. Really well stated.
I had NO idea he can speak like that! Soo wellspoken! As if my admiration for his playing and musical contributions hadn't been enough.. : D
It’s been an honour and a privilege to have played with A.J. He is ‘the’ bass player. X
An amazing tribute. I salute both of you!!!
Wow, what a dedication!
That’s a beautiful tribute! 🙏👏👏👏
The first time I heard Steve Gadd, I was 14 had I been playing drums about two years. High Heeled Sneakers off the "Alive " album by The Chuck Mangione Quartet was the one. He has been my #1 favorite ever since. Legend!
Very cool! Thank you for sharing this. What an inspiration these two gentlemen are.
Awesome I have to check out those records! Anthony is an incredible speaker!
Well said Anthony, Kudos to you for who you are, and what you bring to all us Bass layers out there. What a fantastic testimony as to Stev'es Virtuostic ability and sensitivity with his drum expertise. Meeting Marcus Miller in Perth it was quite evident as to his Humility and ability. Thankyou for inspiring us all and pointing us to every drummer out there whoc auses us to develop our craft further.
Bravo 👏👏👏…not afraid to give someone their flowers 💪💪💪
What an amazing tribute. Beautiful words, beautifully expressed, Mr. Jackson.

Astounding tribute! Thank you Mr. Jackson. Thank you Mr. Gadd. Life is richer because you are in it!
What an incredible tribute!
A great speech, from a great musician. Thank You Anthony for your music and your inteligence. From Brasil
Well said, Anthony, and touching. Of course Steve is the most complete, most tasteful, most versatile and most musical drummer ever. Gad-given balance, touch, poise, finesse and elegance of execution.
Is he? I don't understand this hype at all really. To me, Gadd is just *one* out of literally several hundreds (decent) drummers all over the world. Actually pretty mediocre compared to many of the really skilled ones. I can dig his playing sometimes, especially in later years, but some of the fusion stuff he recorded around the 80s was pretty horrible. At least to my senses.
Yes he is, and there is no hype. He's one of the most recorded drummers in the history of music, and one of the most modest people you'll ever meet. He's been used by so many major recording artists it's just ridiculous. Sinatra, McCartney, Clapton, Paul Simon, J Taylor, Chick Corea, K Bush, Ray Charles, G Benson and Steely Dan being just a few obvious examples. And the reason for that, is that although technically he is very good, Gadd always plays for the artist and song/composition first.
@@bucksmusic Gadd being modest or recorded a lot is pretty irrelevant... If anything it underlines the hype around him. You could just as well say that Madonna, or Britney spears, or Springsteen or whatever is better than the worlds top 1000 jazz drummers, because they are more commercially successful...
@@herrbonk3635 err no. Gadd being used by dozens of major artists, and being one of the most recorded drummers in history (not best-selling I didn't say that and have no idea about that), isn't hype, it's fact. The people he's recorded with didn't use him because of hype, they used him because of his reputation as an impeccable musician who could deliver the right drum part for the work they were creating. You seem to be arguing purely about technique etc, and that's not the point with Gadd, good though his basic technique is.
@@bucksmusic Why this strawman? Of course it's a fact that he is on numerous records... But it's *not* a fact that he is "better" than other jazz (or latin/funk) drummers. That's just some kind of religion.
No I'm not arguing about technique. I usually find him pretty stiff and boring, that's all, although pretty ok in some cases. And he certainly got his own style. However, I honestly don't (personally) know a single person that prefer his style over other jazz drummers.
When intellect weights up the importance of groove! Speaks volumes. What a brilliant teacher AJ is.
Amazing tribute. Anthony is brilliant and Gadd is a great subject.
Wow. I remember seeing this moment when it happened (via tv or tape)??? It was magical then and magical now. Wow wow can this bassist play bass and equally proficient in honoring one of the greatest drummers of our time. Greats are great. Thx for this! D
It's no suprise how well-spoken and considered one of the very best is. Still, hear hear.
That was Absolutely Brilliant!!!!
That was a really good speech!
One of The Greatest giving Props to one of The Greatest.
one one the greatest bass players no doubts... and Steve a true musician! Thank you Steve for your gift to all of us!
Phenomenal insights from one impeccable and legendary musician to another!!! Anthony is not only one of the most original and visionary bassists of all time, but he is also an extremely intelligent man!
Wow! No words❤
Great tribute. Isn't that Louie Bellson sitting in front of Steve?
This was so interesting and intelligent. Anthony Jackson is an incredible musician and a deep thinking human being. A great teacher too
Yess - Love it!!
wow...that was beautiful
