      @Duffelbag Drag Motion sickness is extremely common, but something that you get used to the more you fly. I was getting SUPER nauseous flying in VTOL VR, but I've gotten used to it, and now I can get out of some crazy tailspins on the AH-64s and do some maneuvering in the F-16

    They came back feeling like crap, but I guarantee they wouldn’t hesitate to do it again. It took me quite a few hours to overcome the motion sickness that would put me out for hours after a flight, but I never second guessed going back up.

Next ride were just back seat rides to support USAFE CC from Ramstein to Aviano. And other rides were out and backs. Loved every moment of it. Best reward Crew Chiefs ever receives. Most incentive rides are given while TDY. We would normally give 2- 3 rides per day while TDY to maintainers and other tdy members. We did that in both of my Viper and Eagle squadrons.

    I was at Nellis with the 433rd, later Eagle squadron, in the early eighties. Not only did we get to see the Thunderbirds on a regular basis, we got to see numerous demo flights of various aircraft. Among the aircraft I've seen there, but not always demos, were the Panavia Tornado, Blackburn Buccaneer, various Mirages, Avro Vulcans, U2, SR-71 plus all the various US aircraft including the last active duty F-86. I could list them all but it would be long. The coolest, however, were the F-16XL and the PA-48 Enforcer.

    Man i wish I had that experience, mainly to feel the power in those jets. I'm a drag race driver, and even in my 8 sec camaro going only 171 mph in a quarter mile, it probably only a fraction of what these jets can put out.

      that’s a pretty fast camaro but most gs you’ll probably feel in a road car going forward would probably be at 1g at most. i’ve seen dragy videos where 2,000 hp gtrs with their all wheel drive pull 1.5 - 2g of acceleration going forward.
      by contrast though, drivers feel the most gs turning in the corners or under heavy braking. my civic type r can pull 1.5g laterally in the corners on a race track and close to 2g stopping. by comparison a formula 1 car can experience up to 5g laterally and anywhere from 3-4g under heavy braking.

    • @Digi20
      @Digi20 3 роки тому +2

      I have a chart of an f-16c here. acceleration at 15°C sea level for 24000lb (almost dry) from 200kts to 400kts is 9 seconds. it will cover 0.6 miles and burn (wait for it) 160lb fuel doing that. acceleration is pretty much linear up to around 600kts (~mach 0.9).

    • @xyzaero

    When I was flying aerobatics in a Super Decathlon it turned out I am a natural 5 to 6 g pilot. That's where I tend to pull to. We couldn't go much more. That airplane was only good for 7 positive. But, what a blast to fly. Now to think what the F-16 is like. It has to be amazing. As a mechanic I would have loved to fly one of those flights. I can't imagine 9 Gs. As you said it goes up exponentially in feel and is a workout for sure. I get to watch the F-35 & F-16 fly daily out of Luke and think daily how fortunate those pilots are to get to fly these airplanes VS what we had back in the 70s. Amazing. Thank you.

    The power on tap really is amazing. That said the rocketship comparison that some pilots are wont to use is a halting one. Our orbital launch vehicles (actual rockets) have TWR's (Thrust to Weight Ratio) way in excess of 1:1, the space shuttle had 6:1 once it was off the launch pad and the Falcon 9's of SpaceX fame have 9:1 closing on 10:1 TWR. The use case is vastly different though, fighter jets are incredibly agile things while launch vehicles literally tear themselves apart if the attitude changes too rapidly during full thrust.

    How does the F16 compare to other fighters for max vertical climb? (F-15, F-22, Mig-25/31, etc)
    Back in the 70's they stripped down an F-15 for time to climb records (the Streak Eagle, even had paint removed to reduce weight). Don't recall if or when that record was broken. How would a modern plane in the inventory compare?

      They are flaps, not slats. Slats create a gap between the wing and the lift device that directs the airflow. Leading edge flaps rotate about an axial hinge to change their angle, but do not create an air gap. F-18s also have LE flaps.

    Curious. In the Blue Angels doc they mentioned that the Blues got the oldest F/A-18s in the Navy. The new E & F models all went to the Fleet. Is it the same with the T-birds?

    • @LRRPFco52
      @LRRPFco52 3 роки тому

      Blues retired the Baby Hornets and converted to Super Bugs over the past 2 years, but I think they’re early model Supers without AESA or any of the latest Block II combat-coded systems.
      I remember when T-Birds converted to the F-16A/B Block 15s in 1982 from T-38As after the crash. They converted to F-16C/D Block 32 in 1992 and F-16C/D Block 52 in 2009-present. My first airshow at Edwards was the last year they flew F-4Es, then I was used to seeing them in the T-38As from 1975-1979. We went to West Germany in 1980 and came back in 1982, but didn’t see a T-Bird demo until 1983 or 1984 at Edwards AFB.

    I remember at fort McGuire airforce base an F15 did 15k ft in 15 secs ? What's the fastest climb rate for the F16?

    • @LRRPFco52
      @LRRPFco52 3 роки тому +2

      Depends on which Viper. They have different weights and engines that combine into different climb rates. I think a big mouth Block 30 is hard to beat since they’re lighter than Block 50s, but Block 50s still have a really impressive climb rate.
