You are a gifted author and also so very kind to share your work here on UA-cam. I am a disabled veteran and have a lot of trouble sleeping. Your stories are great to fall asleep to. I find myself backing up to the last part I remember and starting from there, usually in the morning. Thank you for letting us into your worlds.
I try to fall asleep to it but I just listen on and on and on and on and when I finally fall asleep at 8am, it doesn't take long until I wake up, having to back up half an hour or two... :/
Otto is getting more and more ruthless. I hope he regains his humanity before it's too late. I guess we'll find out in the future books. Great series. Thanks for the upload. 😀😀😀👍👍👍⚔⚔⚔🛡🛡🛡
I really appreciate your uploading some of your books to UA-cam. I have been a SciFi/Fantasy lover for over 60 years. The narrator has a relaxing and soothing voice. I have PTSD so it's nice to dream about Otto Shank rather than the terrible experiences that I had as a Military Policeman. You have replaced Andre Norton as my favorite author. I collected everything that she wrote. Now I've started collecting your books. There is nothing like holding a well made and well written book in my hands or seeing it in one of my book shelves. Thank You.
The most interesting thing i find about these books is that i dont know if Otto is going to succeed or fail. Usually you root for the hero, but otto is no hero. I'd wager there are non in this series. I am VERY much looking forward to the next 3 installments of the series.
There are no good guys. Closest to good guy is the guy committing war crimes because most of what Otto does is a reaction to others. Even Otto doing the skull poison thing was intended like a nuke to force capitulation, not a tool for genocide. Voltan can be said to be the good guy, but he allowed the oppression and genocide of wizards simply because of a few bad ones who he sent to the afterlife 600 years ago. He could have raised a few generations of good wizards, but in his cowardice, arrogance, and hubris instead let many major issues fester and boil over. Hell Otto still hasn't done anything actually cruel to his wife who hates him as far as she knows, because her lover who she cheated on him with got executed for assasination and he was a little crass with her about it. Even what he really did wasn't that bad. The worst thing he's done is kill the king to make sure he doesn't fuck up Otto and the prince's plan to save the kingdom from his grief and insanity. Is he a hero? No. But he's likely the closest this story is gonna get to one.
I must agree with each of these takes. Still, I am not rooting for Otto. Except hoping that he puts his wife out or something like that. I'm upset about that whole situation. Shes F'd up for that. At the same time, it's the most compelling storyline to me, in this case.
I've had a pretty bad head injury and have been lying in bed and listening to this series to pass the time. Your writing has kept my spirits up and allowed me to slip into another world while I healed. Thank you, and now that I'm healing and getting back to my life, I'm going to miss being able to listen for hours on end.
Book 4 is finished now, and I'm still going strong, ready for more. Thanks again; I made sure to like each video since you provided these great audiobooks for us. I'm glad that characters had their own clear motivations, as much as some of them betrayed my expectations.
I might have listened to a couple hundred audiobooks and by far this series is now replacing the spot that R.A. Salvatore has held down in my life for many years absolutely amazing. You my friend is a very talented author. I hope that one day this series make it's way to Netflix or Tubi because I will watch this over and over again. I hope Otto will reach immortality.Thank You for your work of art. A fan for life now
That epic moment near the end of chapter 35. Reminded me of the meme: "I'm sorry and I apologize, for the inconvenience of me not giving a F*CK." 😂😂 What Otto said had the same energy. Also appreciate Hans was talking abt how he trusts and likes Otto. It's really nice to know that some people genuinely do appreciate and support Otto. Edit: Also find the audacity which Vulcan, eduard, uthar etc. have funny. To say that Gardendale are the only ones at fault and say:"I'll make them pay for what they did." As if they weren't the ones that started this chain of events. It's legit a lot like irl people, always blaming others for their short comings.
Every book I've listened to of yours is like magic to my imagination as an artist. I picture everything so vividly I find myself trying to illustrate that magic with paint on paper. Thank you for all your inspiration ❤
I love that there's never a boring moment in any of your books it's so hard to put them down always eager to find out how the next bit turns out and that brings another bit that you just have to know before you can sleep. What a refreshing find .

I'm almost done with this novel and have spent much of my weekend binging ..... I enjoy each book and the world building more and more. I want stories about side characters too but Otto is one of the most interesting main characters I've ever had the joy of reading about. The ugly atrocity of war is full stage....and some scenes were tough, but I appreciate the stark reality you have given us. Looking forward to finishing and getting into the next book!
What a wonderfully written series...very descriptive attention to detail and action while at the same time keeping the main character and secondary figures in focus throughout the woven story is refreshing...much thanks for the delight of enjoying your talent...love from Ohio ❤❤❤

Thank you so much james for allowing us the pleasure of listening for free on UA-cam, these books are amazing and you are so talented. Keep up the great work
Although I have thoroughly enjoyed all of your books so far, this one took the crown. The whole Portal Wars series, but particularly this book, has made it to the very top of my all-time favourites list. That list features over a hundred books along with some huge fantasy classics, but for me, this series is up there. It is safe to say that Otto and his crew will have a place in my heart for a long, long time. What an amazing work! Thank you so much for sharing it here.
Thank you so much for putting your works on here,it's been such a pleasure listening to a series so well written. I look forward to the continuing journey with your characters
Thanks for sharing your work to us. Otto is one of the most interesting protagonist (maybe antihero) I have met so far. I have been looking for a character similar to Kvothe and I thought Otto was it. I was happy to be wrong. Love this story. I am looking forward to the next in the series.
Your ability to make me think I hate Otto but then find myself angry at any other characters who think they can best him is uncanny lol Like a lot of people commenting I’ve noticed, I’m going through something that has my mind consumed with intrusive and troubling thoughts. At the moment your books are about the only thing that keeps my mind off those thoughts. Thank you for sharing your work I’m truly grateful! As soon as I’m able I will make a donation ❤
Just bought books 4,5,6 and 7 and am halfway through book 5. Uploading the first few books for free worked on me and I’m very happy it did. It’s fair enough that I buy the rest of the books so you get a couple of quid for all your efforts. Good efforts too. Really enjoying the protagonist Otto Shank and the fact that he’s not pure of heart and unsullied. Looking forward to seeing him develop.
Great writing. When women characters are involved it kinda feels like "men writing women" but overall I am really enjoying these books! Thank you so much for putting them up online!
I feel like yet again the mc doesn't know exactly who he is trusting and yet again they are manipulating him to their ends which wouldn't be good for the majority. But I see he is learning he needs to double check proof of others motives and now be so naive so possibly he for once will be competent in already being capable of rebuffing their plans and maintaining a level of civilization that can find a modicum of equity.
From Book 1 to Book 4, I have seen James E Wisher mold Otto from a "gentle soul who just wants to learn" to a "young man who just do NOT care about innocent enemy human lives." That is, Otto "killed a whole nation filled with people with evil magic to send a message". To be honest, I was rooting for Otto in Books 1 and 2, but since Book 3 I am being to dislike Otto for his obsession with being Arch Mage. My kudos to James with his skill with Otto's personality transformation.
Haven't been able to stop listening! Every chance I get, I tune in. Found this series last week and I'm already on the 4th! Can't wait to check out all of your work.
Hello James. Another book well done. Still looking for book 5. I have all the time in the world, now. I'm disabled and have nothing better to do except audio books. My sight is no good. Even if I could get to a library. I've read so many books and have to wait for hard cover to come out. Very expensive. Ill keep looking for a next book. Thank you for all your hard work. Steve
This series is amazing, i listen to this at work and I’m very glad i found it, i very much enjoy listening to a story that may or may not have heroes or villains but instead just decent people for the most part that are trying to get by and everyone for the most part is quite fair to one another except the odd apple douche that throws a stixk in the works but not once have i been bored listening to any part of this story
Just like another commenter, I found this series by typing audiobook. I started it with no expectations and I've been hooked ever since. Otto is such a compelling character, I can't wait to see what he does next. His transformation is so well written and believable I have to commend James. I also cannot believe you are sharing all your work for free on UA-cam! I am so grateful. Thank you so much. You need more views. I plan to share your work with all my friends. I had to force myself to stop and write this comment before going onto the next book. I'll bet most of your listeners are so enthralled by your story, they can't stop to tell you how brilliant this series is.
Now that Otto has transformed into Hitler, I'm rooting for Uther, Voltan and Edwin. I've never had a book series completely flip me on the main character. This author is an incredible writer. "Absolute power corrupts absolutely"
So you're siding with the creators of Hitler? Those guys are not only just as bad but initiated the conflict that pushed Otto into the role he resides in.
@@chrislastname1994 nobody pushed Otto. He chose to be the horrific person he did. He didn't need to have his brother rape scores of girls and women. Or slaughter so many people. There were other ways to do it and his was the least empathetic. For you to excuse Hitler ("those who created Hitler") is the most godawful ridiculous thing I've read online. Who sympathizes with Hitler except for Nazis and white supremacist? Otto had a choice. And he chose to be a monster.
Dear James, I've just now finished this book and I am gobsmacked, it was exceptionally good :) I think that the general centre of this book was the most condensed action and thrill I've come across so far in your books. Most impressive, very entertaining, and utmost captivating. So many characters following their own agenda yet all fitting into the general direction this story goes. It was an absolutely exciting book. Very cool. Having said all that, "can't wait for the next one," as usual :) Thank you SO much for sharing. I really love your style :) Take care and have a splendid day :)
@@JamesEWisherbooks thank you :) I've got a little surprise for you. If you check your channel from the YT studio, under Comments, and there the other tab "Mentions," you'll find it. ;)

Hey , thanks for letting us cheapskates into the world you made . if you are really into magic stuff and havent finished xmas shopping check out "storm glass " pendants , or go for one of the big guys . theyve been around since the 1700s and change shape and color if the weather is going to change . no one seems to know about them that i have seen , good stocking stuffers and straight up elf magic .
I think it is because of how he treats characters like Hans. The dude is just a regular soldier, but Otto goes out of his way to protect him when able and never lashes out for 'fun' in the way of his father or eldest brother. There's also the general sense that he is content to bring wizards out of hiding and let them live their own lives. He pushes back when pressed, and has been disappointed by people time and time again. He seems set to shed his 'humanity' though.
@@XoRandomGuyoX because of peoples shallow idea that a villain is all black or all white. But Otto has done worse things than anyone else in the books has come anywhere close to.
@@XoRandomGuyoX everything seemingly virtuous that he has done has only been because of his desire to do his masters bidding so that she will further reveal how to become an arcane lord
I'm loving this series so much! I really wish there was a wiki or something that gave more info on the Arcane Lords. I'm curious to know how many threads of Ether Otto will be able to control in total, and more details on individual spells and how many threads of Ether are required for each one. I love details like that. Does each Wizard have a different personal limit? Is there a connecting factor that allows Wizards to break through their limit? I know for Caronon (spelling?) it was her stubbornness, and for Otto it was anger. Perhaps just an extreme emotional situation is what allows it? When a Wizard breaks through their personal limit, how many new threads do they gain; is it a set amount, or different for each Wizard? Is there an overall limit for threads of Ether that a person can wield? 100? 1,000? Unlimited? So many questions left unanswered! Maybe I'll find them in the last three books. Also, I've been trying to find this series on hardback, but can only find audiobooks and paperback. If it's available in hardback, I would buy the whole series in a heartbeat!
Wow, that's a lot of questions. : ) I never really decided most of that stuff. I just made up the details I needed to write the story and tried to keep it consistent as I went. Hardcovers are available on Amazon, here's the link to The Hidden Tower. www.amazon.com/dp/1685200133
Does anyone else try to stop themselves from binge listening while reading these books? I keep trying to stop myself every 30 minutes just so I can enjoy and relish the characters/scenes. I do this to only my most favorite shows/series/books and topics because eventually it has to end and there will be that void.

Aotto: "That was the problem about dealing with people who knew so much. They always assumed you knew more then you did." 2:24:15
Absolutely been loving these books.
Gald to hear it.
Great books!!! Well written and thought out!! I love them!
Thanks !
Now that Otto has transformed into Hitler, I'm rooting for Uther, Voltan and Edwin. I've never had a book series completely flip me on the main character. This author is an incredible writer. "Absolute power corrupts absolutely"
Same.
Wtf why they started this
Dear James, I've just now finished this book and I am gobsmacked, it was exceptionally good :) I think that the general centre of this book was the most condensed action and thrill I've come across so far in your books.
Thanks, always happy to hear from you.
@@JamesEWisherbooks thank you :) I've got a little surprise for you. If you check your channel from the YT studio, under Comments, and there the other tab "Mentions," you'll find it. ;)

I’ve love this series. You’re a very talented writer. Thank you!
You're welcome and thanks for the kind words.
The only reason this isn't popular is because of simple unluck. This is good stuff. I'm glad i found this gem.
Glad you're enjoying it.
The term "agitated the ether" would always remind me of Otto's story

@@JamesEWisherbooks I've always got the rogue star to fall back on, almost done with book 2.
So far so good. I will finish tonight.
Man this was absolutely fantastic I cannot wait for the fifth one
Hey , thanks for letting us cheapskates into the world you made . if you are really into magic stuff and havent finished xmas shopping check out "storm glass " pendants , or go for one of the big guys . theyve been around since the 1700s and change shape and color if the weather is going to change . no one seems to know about them that i have seen , good stocking stuffers and straight up elf magic .
This series would make a tremendously excellent action RPG or, even better in my esteem, a Live Action Series
Either one would be very cool.
I love how people are just now thinking of Otto as the villain. His whole story is a villain origin story for sure.
Wow definitely had some twists I didn't see there with relationships.
Big fan . Thank you so much for this .
This series is fantastic.
Don't let the series end.
