We tried one of our Canon FD lens on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. Let us know what you think in the comments below.
I’ve also put a link to the lens and adapter used in the description :)
Cheers,
Flo
My final verdict on this camera is that the picture quality is outrageous- I doubt there will ever be another contender at this price point. At least 8/10 videos I've seen, however, are all jittery as all hell. I get that this is mainly due to people trying to use this as a "run and gun" when it ought to be used in more of a production setting... but the thing is.. most professionals working on legit productions are not going to be using this camera (they'd maybe consider it as a B or C camera... *on a tripod* ) We are in the new age of "youtube filmmakers" on a budget (No disrespect to anyone including the creator of this video - I'm just stating the facts), but that demographic typically wants to run around with cameras handheld; not do anything production-related. So now we're in this predicament where we've got a camera designed for production that most professionals would probably not use (due to there being better options out there), and a bunch of "filmmakers on a budget" that won't use it in the way it was designed to be used because they're not working on production-related films. It's because of that we are going to see an influx of shaky videos all over youtube. It's a great camera and I may buy one just because it's sooo dang cheap and produces a wild image, but the only way to properly use this *in my opinion* is on a set/for professional production purposes.
**Edit - I am not calling you, of two lands, a filmmaker on a budget. Nor am I lumping you into that category as I know are a working professional. Talking about the non-working professionals**
Well said my dude
or use a tripod
Or a gimbal.
I believe you couldn't be more than right. The jittery effect is evident all the way, even though the shots with the FD lenses look really good. Here is a camera that in a way "begs" to be used in a more "professional manner" : short films, music videos, independent features etc and costs around 1300 euros. Of course when you add up a bunch of other stuff like extra batteries and cages and viewfinders and whatever, the cost is going to double at least. I guess having this in your "pocket" and doing handheld "run and gun" outside shots without any proper gimbal or tripod or even placement on a solid place as well as lack of proper lighting will degrade the camera's utmost abilities.
Well said, good job preemptively shutting down people calling you out on this comment too haha
seemingly so simple yet so beautiful.. amazing what you can capture with natural light and good composition. nice work!!!
Thank you very much :) !!
Thanks for putting this together! As a fan of vintage lenses I was really interested in seeing this. I think this camera has the bells and whistles necessary for high quality modern film work, while retaining the ability to capture that old school film vibe.
Thanks for watching, glad you like it. And I completely agree with you :).
This is SO GOOD, I just picked up this lens for my BMPCC4K!
Thanks a lot !! Such a great lens on the Pocket 4K :)
Now that's what i'm talking about, i absolutely love the look, I'm even more in love with this camera, will surely go for some vintage glass when i eventually get mine, Thanks a bunch for sharing, You're Awesome !!!
Thanks so much for the kind words !! The lenses are so cheap it is definitely worth it. Thanks for watching.
Keep the great videos coming, the pocket 4k is my dream camera and I will own one someday
This is really close to what classic films look like. thanks!
melanie nolley Thanks so much :)
Looks great! Can't wait to try my old Pentax glass on the P4K
Thanks :) !! I've looked at Pentax lenses too, almost bought one.
Ah nice! Definitely worth a look, heard good things about the 50mm 1.4, though I'm using the 50mm 1.7, enjoyed it a lot on the bmpcc.
I would love to see this!! I had the FA77 back in the day and to this day, I still think that the FA limited edition lineup is the best. People just don’t know about it.
@@rayrapphaelbisnar ahh would love one of those 77mm lenses one day!
Love the cinematic from this vintage lense
Thanks !! I was pleased too, need to get a couple more now haha :)
just one thing that vintage lenses lack of is the OIS. other thing else great.
the combo is real potential of low budget film making for sure. :)
Yeah definitely. I could have stabilised in post and it worked but kind of like the roughness of it so i left it as is :).
Of Two Lands It would be great if you could make some video with ProRes 1080P please. I’m really curious about the image quality with optimums HD. I quit sure that my 2011 IMac will not good enough to edit 4K file. And thank you every much for your works. Always giving me such inspirations :).
Thanks for the kind words :). Will try my best to do that. Cheers
This was exactly what I was looking for in deciding to make the lens purchase. Thank you.
Glad you liked it, thanks for watching :) !!
Really love the colors here Flo! Just imagine if the bmpcc4k had IS!
Thank you !! I know, right ? It would be pretty sweet :)
I just got this lens nice!! 👏 excellent footage as usual!
Thank you and congrats!!
It is a joy to watch your video!
Thank you so much for the kind words :)
even with youtube compression looks amazing. great footage!
Thank you :) !!
Great images!! The camera is a dream for budget filmmakers!
Thanks !! It definitely is :)
Brilliant! I have FD lenses from the 17mm f3.5 to the 70 - 200mm f3.5 so this is really awesome to see. Very cinematic. If you have more FD's you can shoot with that would be cool to see. Thank you
Thanks !! I might try to shoot with the 50mm 1.8 :).
What do you think of the 17mm 3.5 and 20mm 2.8 ?
I'm a big fan of the 17mm f3.5 especially. Gives around a 25mm look and nice sharp (vintage sharp) center image and acceptable (for my film needs) edge sharpness. The 20mm 2.8 and 24 2.8 were so similar I ended up giving away my 20mm to keep the 50mm 2.8 look on m4/3 but again very nice. I have the 35 - 105 f 3.5 FD lens which I'm looking forward to using on the BBPC4K once it eventually arrives in New Zealand.
Book store cafe on Oxford St, amazing clip !👌
Haha yep, thanks !!
Really great, loved the look, highlights look good to me, handheld played well with the mood of the short and wasn’t distracting not sure why people complain so much as I don’t feel super smooth shots would’ve improved the short drastically. Gimbals are only getting cheaper & mono pods are still a great way for cheap and mobile stability, this ‘camera made for professionals that professionals won’t use’ argument is bogus, a single camera comes out with decent ibis and suddenly you can’t make a cheap film without it?
I’m not saying the camera is all roses, I would’ve loved a focus on longer battery life and a tilted monitor but sadly we have to take the good with the bad to get this kind of image. Good news is that filmmaking has never been easier to get comparable footage to the big boys, Braw will go a long way to converting more film makers over to the P4K.
Creating strong competition is always good for the consumer. For many projects I’d rather take the GH line for its ease of use and brilliant quality but personally if I’m making anything I’d consider a film then its the P4K all the way.
I'm not against handheld shots, but some of these look like "high shutter jittery" to me.
And the blown highlights... are not pleasing at all.
No prob with camera movement - people move - cameras move - adds to reality
Please explain high shutter jittery - thanks
@@stevemarshallfunny5981, I would interpret as high shutter speed jittery. The effect of using a high shutter speed which causes less motion blur. Sharp frames, coupled with the handheld shake = high shutter jittery. My interpretation.
Lenny Goodman thanks Lenny
Love the color. What's your opinion on mounting a EF-MFT speed booster then adapting the FD to and EF? instead of adapting the FD straight to the MFT.
I love the images coming from the P4K. It may be a dream for the upcoming B-RAW. Thanks for sharing. I like the Canon FD lens. It does give that vintage film look.
Cant't wait for BRAW too !! :) Thanks for watching.
I was looking for a 24-25mm lens and decision is not easy and this one makes it even harder. There are the Pana/Oly native MFTs, the Meike T2, with adapter the Canon EF24 (IS), EF-S24 and this too. And also some zooms.. This one is cheap and the image is beautiful. Thanks a lot for sharing this experience!
Canon FD lenses are beautifull. I have two: 50mm 1.4 ssc and 24mm 2.8 ssc. I love them.
Love them too, such good glass !! 50mm 1.4 looks amazing, i have the 1.8 on my AE :)
The atmosphere and color are nice.
Thank you, glad you like it :)
I will continue to do it.
Looks great! The only blatant vintagey thing I noticed was that the image got a bit milky when in front of the window, but apart from that.. Just so nice.. And nice piece of story!
Thanks very much !!
Looks really very close to a 35mm film in my opinion. Amazing!
Thanks so much !! Was happy with the look too :)
Old Nikkor Lenses are great vintage glass as well
Yeah for sure, Nikkor are really nice.
Beautiful
Thank you !!
Awesome footage, I have a FD 50 1.8 from my Canon T70, I just purchased the KF Adapter, cannot wait to shoot this weekend. Cheers
Thank you !! I have the 50 too, awesome lens :), have fun. Cheers
Lovely.......I must say I also enjoy the music.
Haha thanks :)
@@OfTwoLands You're most welcome.
beautiful
Thanks!
24mm or 25mm i think is the best everyday focal lens for blackmagic cameras
It looks very nice ! Thanks for your video and this test ! And good news for filmmakers with small budget...
Maxime Brachet Glad you like it :). Thanks for watching.
Feels. Awesome job.
Thank you !!
Your work is amazing. Thank you for sharing your work and talent.
Thanks so much for the kind words :)
Waiting for the “it doesn’t have the film look like the old pocket” and “it’s so video-y” comments...
Haha yeah 100% !!
Why? Because thats what you thought when you watched the video?
titaniumslug Quite the opposite, I think the Pocket 4K is beautiful when exposed and graded right. That’s why Of Two Lands has been putting out some of the best footage with this camera!
Whenever I see people say “it doesn’t look filmic” all I hear is “I don’t know how to color grade”
Lovely footage. How do you like the FD compared to the Contax Zeiss? Do you prefer one over the other
Thanks !! I’ve made a video about the Contax a couple of week ago where I talk about them VS the FD :).
This has some serious vibe. good stuff
Thanks so much !!
very pretty images, thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching :) !!
Amazing video, so you just applied the Extended Video LUT and that's it? I love the softness of the lens!
Nice look. So you are not using FD Speedbooster after all? FD lenses are full Frame. They cover more than the entire S16 sensor. I just ordered a speedbooster for the Minolta MD 50 F1.4 vintage lens. The K&F adapter did not fit well on Cinema Micro. There is a movement, if I change focus or Iris opening, producing metalic sound in the microphone of the camera. I hope, the speedbooster is better.
Amazing video. The 24 will be a 48mm on the pocket?
Thanks !! Yes :).
45.6mm
Love handheld filming. Well done.
Tolufilms // 13 Stops Pocket Films Thank you :)
This footage is beautiful, bravo !
Is the aperture ring a jumping (clicked) one or is it a smooth turn (de-clicked)?
Thanks !! It is clicked. It’s an old photography lens.
Beautiful!
Thank you !!
The motion cadence seems to be worse than first anticipated. But the FD's really shine with this camera!
What stabalisation are you using for the shots? I like a bit of movement but micro shakes are apparent throughout and I'd like to know how manageable that is.
No stabilisation so that’s why :)
very nice look and composition, thumbs up! I would suggest to do a stabilize in resolve to reducethe micro jitters...
Thank you !! Oh yeah I would definitely, this was more a test and I wanted to see what i would get with just the lens and camera :)
I love the footage!
Thanks, glad you do :)
Interested to know how it well it would function with my metabones XL .64x on the Pocket4K
Is it Possible to use and FD-EF adapter on a Metabones? Wouldn't it affect the result? BMPCC 4K > Metabones .64X > FD-EF Adapter > FD Lens. Is this possible?
Please do more, with this convination
super nice!!! in the color grainding process, how you make this soft cinematic look?
Thanks !! I didn't have to grade too much most of the look came from the lens. I had just added a bit of warmth.
Was this purely hand held or on a shoulder rig of some kind?
Purely handheld.
Looks beautiful. Do you plan to try using a speedbooster for the FD's? If so, which model (.71x MB, Zhongyi, etc.)?
I'm also interested in this question :D
Thanks !! I don't think i'll use one for the FD. If I do get a speedbooster it would probably be for my Canon L EF lenses :). And I would probably go Metabones.
Hey Hello, can you make a video like this but in a low light situation? I will appreciate
I'll keep this in mind :)
Hey this was really cool. Thanks for sharing. I have a copy coming in tomorrow and I’m more excited about it now. I was a impressed by the depth of field on the closeups knowing that you didn’t use a speed booster.
I have an off brand one that I’ll test it with to make it something like a 17mm f2 on my Fuji camera.
Did you have a lens hood on while filming?
Superb quality! Is this the SSC or the New FD version of it?
Thank you !! It’s the FD :)
@@OfTwoLands, That's great, thanks for getting back. Did you use an ND filter here and can you tell which Filmconvert stock did you use on these clips? I really love the colour grading on this movie and the canon vintage lens. This is my most favourite movie of yours besides the bee documentary.
This is beautiful! Something about the colour and quality that I really enjoy. Really loving the camera. My man even got a cameo!!!!
* Sam and Jack disliked cos they're jealous
Thanks man haha !! You need to get one, or let's shoot something soon :)
Such a nice images! Very moody and organic. Congratulations! I found everything in place except for some highlights. What do you think about highlights rolloff? Some of it seemed a bit extra desaturated and compressed in my viewer. How would you compare it with other BM cameras? Thanks.
Thank you. I haven't spent any time grading the footage, just applied a lut. The lens is not too contrasty either so that is probably why. I was pleased with the look and vintage lenses bring this camera closer to the original Pocket in my opinion.
Any chance you know what ISO you shot at?
I shoot at 400 90% of the time so I’d say that :)
Do you need a speed booster when using these with the bmpcc 4K?
Just a cheap adapter :). Link in description 👍
Looks good 📷
Thanks :)
Which do you like better Contax zeiss or canon fd?
Nice work again
Thank you !!
I got the 24mm lens for my original Black Magic Cinema Camera and it doesn't fit. Which lens adapter do you recommend I use?
Good video but I think we have to get used watching jittering videos from the bmcc4k
Thank you. Like i've said, I could have easily stabilised in post but felt like leaving the footage as is. With a IS lens the footage is very smooth. This was also not a wide angle. Curious to try a 17mm on this.
@@OfTwoLands so you shot this without speedbooster right?
herbert freud Yep, just the adapter :)
I would go for a stabilized modern lens over a vintage anytime.
Each to their own I guess :). I like both and it suits different projects.
Great Content Guys! Is the Focus way on the 24mm FD as Short as the most Foto Lenses? For filming not so practical ?! I heard you touch the Focusring a Little bit and its out of focus, is this true?
Thanks !! I found it to be quite long for a photo lens. Obviously it isn't a cine lens but it is nice. It can be tricky to focus but definitely usable. I don't remember loosing focus by touching the ring. Cheers
Of Two Lands thanks a lot for your answer. It has very nice Colors and i think of checking this little Beauty for the bm4k.
Great video! I just bought the same lens and adapter. I was wondering, is there a crop factor?
Thanks !! It’s always the same crop factor. The lens doesn’t change that unless you have a speedbooster 👍
Awesome video! Beautiful colours as expected but the shake is a little bit much.
Thanks !! Yeah it is quite noticeable I know, will probably stabilise next time or use gimbal / tripod. This was just a test :).
What speed booster was used to adapt it to the bmp4k ? 4/3 micro sensor
Just a cheap adapter, no speed booster :).
I just ordered this lens! Thanks! I’m thinking about getting the FD to EF adapter since I already have a speed booster for my bmpcc 4K. Thoughts?
Nice !! I actually haven't used Ef lenses on the Pocket 4K yet so hard to tell. I am sure it would be great and it makes sense since you have the speedbooster already.
did you just use a FD to micro4/3 adapter or was it with a speed booster ? Thanks
Just a cheap adapter :). Link in description 👍
@@OfTwoLands thanks . Just bought the bmpcc4k excited for it to arrive :)
@@owenrumsey3662 Have fun :) !!
which adapter did you used
hi how do you keep the constant focus on moving subjects since this being a manual lens? able to share? especially with a gimbal
Hi, I am just racking focus :). This was all handheld, no gimbal.
the nicest footage i've seen from the pocket so far. the color looks great, but for me the highlights still look to be struggling, often on the verge of blowing out. and it really needs some kind of stabilization.
Thanks so much, really glad you like it !! I know what you mean about the highlights for sure, that was my first day trying the lens out on the Pocket. Also didn't have a filter haha. And yes, definitely needs to be stabilised. I am quite stable usually so it means that this is as good as handheld can be haha. Cheers
My apologies if you’ve already answered this but was wondering what adapter you used?
Hi, I've used the the K&F FD to M43, link in the description :)
Did you use any stabilzation?
Nope, just handheld.
GOD BLESS YOU
awsome!
Thanks :) !!
What did you color grade with? Looks great!
Thanks !! Just applied the Blackmagic Pocket 4K to Extended Video LUT in Davinci Resolve :)
@@OfTwoLands Why does it look a bit yellowish/vintage with just the REC709 utility lut? FD lenses shouldn't shift the color that much should they?
The Young Travelier sometimes older lenses do that. I had a Helios that did that.
Great video. Thanks for sharing. And what is the song you are using?
Thank you. 'The Slowdown' by Michael Shynes (Both Sides) on Artlist :)
Excellent. I have had my Blackmagic on order for several weeks but no delivery yet. I have the Canon c200 so I think the BM will be a great more portable camera on my Ronin s. Getting impatient :)
I have C200 as well and the Pocket fits nicely in my kit :). I ordered mine the second it got announced haha. Thinking of getting a Ronin S too. Hopefully you get your Pocket 4K very soon !!
Nice. The Ronin S is great.
Where did you get that awesome song?
Artlist :)
Of Two Lands thanks
Beautiful. Where is the location?
Thanks, it is a coffee place in Paddington, Sydney.
looks nice but the handheld is jittery af.
Beautiful footage! What is the name of the song?
Thanks a lot !! The Slowdown by Michael Shynes (Both Sides) on Artlist :)
as a heads up your links don't work anymore!!! love this video
Fixed it, thanks :) !!
Great looking video 👍🏻
ubarhd1 Thank you :)
the micro jitter is gross. maybe make the camera a bit heavier?
Really nice....Can you provide the name of the artist on the music track...really awesome
Michael Shynes - The Slowdown
Would be 100% better if on a gimbal, but shaky/jitter aside, it looks beautiful.
Thanks :)
Is this an s.s.c. lens?
What was the crop factor doing this?
MFT on the bmpcc4k is about x1.9 so this is roughly a 46mm.
@@OfTwoLands thanks dude
no speedbooster ?
Nope :)
How is the vignetting in 16:9?
There's none.
the look is great, not so much those micro shakes though. Try using a basic shoulder rig, will improve the quality of the video greatly
The sad thing about this camera is that the images are very unstable, shake too much when held in the hand, for me this is not acceptable, please blackmagic, improve this in the next versions
This is not really Blackmagic's fault haha. I've used a vintage, prime lens, (50mm equivalent) handheld, with no gimbal etc. The footage is bound to be shaky. Check out the other videos I posted where i've used a lens with IS and you'll see the camera has no 'problem" :).
"no problem" because your other videos make much use of slow motion, this ends up disguising the small jumps between frames, I'm following other videos on youtube on this camera, and even with IS on the lens, I've seen the same "problem"
I was interested in buying the camera, but it really discourages me
At least you resisted going the slowmo route to avoid the shakes.
You should probably rent it out and see how you go :). Any small and light cameras would shakes though.
Yeah It didn't suit the lens and place.
High shutter speed?
Smith Storm Shutter angle :).
Looks like that, doesn't it ?
Jitter sort of drove me crazy. I think if you're going to hand-hold this camera it may be better to use a stabilized lens.
Fair enough. I could have stabilised this in post easily but preferred to leave it as is. I have IS lenses too, I love them but didn't mind jittery for this test.
Lovely look, thanks for sharing! I am a fan of this FD lens! Sharp and soft at the same time.
I have the same 24mm f/2.8 and the great 50mm f/1.4 ssd. There is a video in youtube with this camera and some shots with the 50 1.4... and looks greeeat!: ua-cam.com/video/Vx5cBitlAbU/v-deo.html
Whenever I get my BMPCC4K my plan is to use mostly the 50mm with the normal adapter as a 100mm equivalent, and this 24mm with a speedbooster as a 35mm f/2 equivalent. I have a Viltrox EF to M43 so I just need a thin FD to EF adapter between the FD and the Viltrox. I hope this can work? Not tested still. The 50mm 1.4 is a "killer" in lowlight and bokeh, and the 24mm with the SB at f/2 could be closer to the 50 than it is now.
This camera has not a cinematic look? I have to say the lens used is critical to achieve a certain look with any camera. You can check this example with the 24 and 50 FD's cutting with a "modern" Sigma lens that looks very different in the same camera (GH2). The Sigma is more brilliant and crispy, more "videoish" if you want. It has more contrast and has not the softness --the "continous tone"--, of the FD's: ua-cam.com/video/fDV7_vEZkXc/v-deo.html
Lovely look, but jittery as hell
This was a test when I was out for coffee so I didn't bring any other gear with me and was curious to see how the camera would behave with just a old lens with nothing else, not even a filter. I also chose not to stabilise in post. Of course a tripod or gimbal or any other rigging would definitely help. I usually shoot with IS lenses on the Pocket 4K, or mainly shoot static frames.
Terrible shaking
