In today’s episode, we’re going to learn everything about the Vorarlberger Referendum of 1919 in which the Vorarlbergers voted to secede from Austria and become a Swiss canton.. This video covers the background behind it, who supported it and who didn’t and why they weren’t allowed to join Switzerland. The referendum is still very present in Austria’s memory, which is why the state of Vorarlberg is often called „Kanton Übrig”, which means something along the lines of “remaining canton.”

I was playing Germany in hoi4 kaiserreich, and I invaded Austria. After ignoring Europe a bit to focus on invading China and India, I noticed that Switzerland now owned voralberg and I was confused considering I was the one who conquered it. Glad I got some sort of explanation.

Vorarlberg is connected to the rest of Austria by the Arlberg tunnels. Before the construction of the Arlberg rail tunnel it was quite impossible to reach Vorarlberg in Winter on Austrian territory. The locals have this saying: What God has seperated by a mountian (the Arlberg), men should not connect with a tunnel.

I live in quite another part of Europe, on the Swedish west coast. There are two islands here, that finally got connected with the mainland and with each other in 1967 (if I remember correctly). The people there, especially on the smaller island, used to be against the bridges that connected them with the mainland. On a dark night in 1980 one of the bridges to that island, which is called Tjörn, was hit by a ship in foggy weather. It collapsed, and 8 people were killed when they unknowingly drove over the edge and fell into the water deep below. "Somewhat" cynically many people on the island remarked: "Now only the bridge to Orust (the other island) needs to collapse, and we'll live quite peaceful out here." 🙄

This ruler (Karl I)was completely detached from reality and tried to recreate an dead empire by force, which no one wanted (except the Viennese elite, still dreaming of an easy life and milking numerous subjects, disregarding the real aspirations of the nations forced to obey the Austrians). "You have to love Austria like a mother, because if not, the "mother's lover" (the Hungarian) will come and kick the butts of all disobedient subjects (If he couldn't make it, mom will call the big German brother - and he can kick really hard!). He was a pitiful character who didn't understand the spirit of the times. That's why he ended up in a pathetic way.

    • @charlesgrant-skiba5474
      @charlesgrant-skiba5474 Рік тому +4

@@willkettle3959 Dear friend, There is not a single country (which was previously part of Austria-Hungary) that misses or wants to recreate it. The proof of this is not only in politics but also in literature. It is enough to read "The Good Soldier Švejk" by Jaroslav Hašek to understand the attitude of the Czechs, Moravians and others towards the Empire. Ukrainians have been looking for independence for a long time (in Galicia and Bukovina - see the work of Taras Shevchenko). Even the Hungarians also wanted to break away from the rule of Vienna (several uprisings against the Austrians) - despite the fact that their elites played an important role in the Empire! The Poles considered the part of former Poland that had been annexed by the Austrians to be the most dangerous for their culture and national identity. I do not even have to mention the Balkan states (there is a lot of literature showing the wickedness of the Austrians and Hungarians in the former Empire. The only exception may be Kraina, but more cultural than political). Even the former allies did not support the idea of recreating any "reformed" Empire, which contributed to the complete failure of the desperate attempt to take over the power and the Hungarian crown by Karl II. During World War I, tens of thousands of Austro-Hungarian soldiers, and perhaps more (mostly Slavs, but also Hungarians and Jews), deserted to the enemy side and joined the Russian army fighting against Austria (these were unprecedented events in history). Even Vorarlberg wanted to join Switzerland or Germany, similar tendencies were in Salzburg - for good reason. The Sudeten Germans missed Berlin much more than Vienna. Austria-Hungary had long been an inefficient, bureaucratic and corrupt state organism, which became clear at the time of crisis (echoes of this can be seen in the novel "The Trial" by Franz Kafka). Attempts to save the Empire (despite the dissatisfaction of his father, Emperor Franz Josef) were attempted by Archduke Ferdinand ( he was even ready to grant autonomy or independence to certain parts of the Empire, under certain conditions of course) but even if he had survived the assassination attempt in Sarajevo, he would not have maintained the antiquated monarchical-aristocratic structure. Yes, the Allies cleverly used all these resentments, but they did not have to make an effort. Almost all over the Empire, the fall of Austro-Hungary was solemnly celebrated and the building of independent states began. And these countries celebrate their independence to this day!

Amazing video on an obscure topic that has been mostly forgotten, the post WWI days were wild, granted everything was wild back then.
To my knowledge the Swiss were mostly against it because it would have tipped the balance even more towards the German speaking and catholic population and because the Entente made it pretty clear that they wouldn't support anything in that direction, so pretty much what you said in the video.
Fun fact, during the campaign and especially after the referendum failed, the opposite faction made fun of the supporters by calling Voralberg "Kanton übrig" mockingly, meaning "left over canton"

I think its important to mention that Switzerland had really no interest in annexing Vorarlberg due to two further factors: Vorarlberg was German-speaking and catholic. In Switzerland those two factors were a major balance issue and could have tipped the scale in the one or other favour, especially in the council of states where every canton gets two seats

There was also another reason that you haven't mentioned on why it wasn't wanted as a new canton in Switzerland.
A new Catholic canton bothered the protestant cantons, which you've mentioned. But a new German-speaking canton also bothered the French-speaking cantons (Geneva, Valais, Fribourg, Neuchâtel, and at the time Bern with a large minority of French speakers). Before the creation of the canton of Jura, the German speaking cantons had 77% of the seats in the conseil des États, the Senate, an already high proportion compared to the demographic size of the region, meanwhile the French speaking cantons were under-represented (a situation better corrected with the Jura canton). So a new German speaking canton was a big no-no, particularly because WW1 almost tears the country apart after some German-speaking politicians, militarymen and bureaucrats surreptitiously worked to bring Switzerland into the war on the side of Germany (the first big scandal took place in 1916 when two high ranking colonels were discovered to be working for the central powers), as the Swiss French kept defending the neutrality of the country and, at the time that Voralberg made its petition, had been proven completely right in forcing the country to stay neutral instead of having joined the losing side in the war.

    • @12D_D21

At the time, Italy kept a policy of somewhat guaranteeing Austria's borders, since they saw it as now being in the Italian sphere of influence, so to say. Also, just a general argument of "maintaining the balance of power in the region", which completely goes out of the window when you consider that Italy took South Tyrol right next door at the same time this was happening

Good video but wrong about the general strike in Switzerland. The military presence was not because of the strike, the strike was because of the military presence. The central government agreed to lower the milk prices but a trigger happy Swiss German military officer, who could not believe the defeat of Germany and was convinced the left action committee "Aktionskomitee Olten" was planning a socialist revolution in conjunction with the "jews" in Moskau, forced the action committee to disband. The action committee up until this moment had no intention for a general strike but now sought help from the other worker committee's/parties. Especially the ones in the French speaking part had no interests in striking because they were quite happy withe the French victory and lower milk prices. Visiting from the disbanded action committee, the German speaking spokesman was booed by his French comrades for wanting to strike just because his committee was forced to disband at this moment the trigger happy military officer surrounded the lokal train station,(I think it was in Lausanne) giving the Swiss French speaking workers the impression they would be arrested and their democratic rights taken away, forcing them to agree with the Swiss-German that action was needed. In the end the strike was called of by its leaders after a few days because they were convinced a continuation of it would lead to violence and violence to revolutionary sentiment and even the leader of the Swiss workers party had no intention for a revolution.
My point being, the calming of the situation had much less to do with increased military presence but much more with the general unwillingness for revolution and too much change throughout the whole population.

@@SirManateee I'll have to look in to it but most if not all of the stuff I have is in German.
Back to the strike I mean of course if the military was not deployed in mass as soon as the strike began I imagine it would have continued but what I find interesting is that just the threat of violence erupting was enough for the leader of the worker movement to cancel just after three days, in an Europe with extremely high acceptance and willingness for violence. The same can be said for the government in later stages but not the Swiss military. The information they gave the federal council were completely based on the stuff this one officer was reporting and they managed to convince the federal council that revolution was imminent leading to the disbandment of the action committee and the troop presence in Lausanne. Even though the government won a complete victory, without giving in to any of the demands, violence basically never broke out and everybody going back to work, in the weeks and the months to follow the highest wage increases to this day occurred throughout Switzerland and in nearly every industry and for most individuals. The government clearly communicated to the people that it was a government of consensus and not confrontation, continuing a very long tradition and shaping Swiss politics to this very day. Unfortunately it's barely known today in Switzerland and most likely just because it was handled so well by both sides.( I mean of course besides the antisemitic officer who basically started the whole thing lol)
