One of the more helpful videos on the OT I’ve seen. Very clear. Most attempts at teaching is by folks who seem to forget what it’s like to be a total beginner. They attempt to explain one thing, perform, say 5 operations and don’t explain those other operations. Thanks so much for taking the time to do this!
thanks a lot! Octatrack is very challenging to make videos about, and even just figuring out how to film the screen properly is something I still struggle with, and then the oodles of features and possibilities easily de-rails attempts at a cohesive and engaging presentation. Most of my OT vids assume some level of familiarity with functions and aren't quite aimed at beginners (although they may still find them valuable), but this video was definitely structured around features that I would have found very useful to understand fully from the very beginning. . . or to at least have had knowledge of their existence xD - might also be helpful for people that don't own an OT yet and are thinking about it the OT is rather good at making people feel like total noobs... took me years to feel 'comfortable' and there is still tons for me to learn, thanks for sharing your thoughts! :)
thanks a lot! always feel like I could do a better job, it's a very challenging device to properly demonstrate; the next info video I'm working on for the Octatrack has changed scope about 4 times by now :D
The edit menus at 2:09 you can also access by simply pressing yes. "as in: Yes, more please" ... =) .. Arrows left and right to change menu headers. Yes for sub menus.
thanks much, and thanks for watching! will certainly cover more of these kinds of Octatrack basics in the future, but I am trying to avoid simply reciting lists of features. I want to really focus in on the things I personally find most important to know, and why I think they're important/useful/meaningful - my hope is that it makes for better videos and better learning opportunities :)
this was SO helpful! the function+edit combo in recording setup will save me so much time. also didn't really understand how useful the Slots trig mode could be. or that the delay ratio subdivisions could be changed with the scale setup button. Thanks!!
Hey Max so glad your putting out your Octatrack knowledge very deep and very helpful. I do struggle to remember all this stuff! I did think I saw in one of your videos that it was possible to engage a thru machine without triggering on first step as per the manual. Am I imaging this?
thanks a lot! re: thru machine, it's possible that it was manually triggered by just hitting a trig key, or I put down a trigger for it that I deleted shortly after - as long as hold and release are infinite it just needs to get triggered once, but definitely needs to get activated somehow!
previous knowledge of using any other Elektron is a big help, Octatrack as a first Elektron would be a bit rough, I had some experience with a friend's Machinedrum before getting an Octatrack. re: videos I recommend to mostly just dive right in and come back around to watch videos some time later after you get some familiarity with it
Octatrack is a very modular kind of sampler, so once you get a bunch of samples loaded, a couple patterns going, and some scenes set up changing different pieces around can give unexpected and fresh results. In that particular section of the video I'm demonstrating sending lots of different samples through processing chains that were originally built for completely different purposes/samples
Thanks for the beginner approach! I think there might be an error at 3:17 in tracks mode trig 1-8 wonˋt affect midi but start disconnected tracks (pattern settings: play free)! What do you think about the mk2?
yup definitely a mistake there - another thing that I'm not communicating clearly in this video is that to use track trig mode to trig the MIDI tracks you have to be in MIDI mode
max marco you mention the midi stuff at the end. Still great work, Im working through the manual at the moment (itˋs hard work) so it helps to see things again in videos. Iˋm even thinking of doing an Merlin addendum with my notes beeing the manual essentials, but I havenˋt got time resources at the moment..
In the audio edit menu (trim, slice, edit), I can get those same pop-ups by hitting "yes" (instead of "func + bank"). Hm and I was gonna say you can change the default trig mode under "proj > system > personalize > default trig mode" but the options are "one," "one2", and "hold," instead of like "tracks," "chromatic," etc. @_@
This device I’ve owned for years and I can honestly say that it takes unprecedented amount of hours and times to let newly learned information to marinate. I find it to be unnecessarily menu divey, oftentimes another button would suffice. I’m good with remembering keyboard shortcuts-if you’re not then avoid this machine. It’s a slow learner with a non-intuitive UI/UX. This type of video should have been made by Elektron.
I found the thing quite easy actually. Off course some menus and you need to know how to use function key. But it took me a couple of days to understand most of it

thank you for sharing your knowledge in these greats videos max! cheers from quebec!
Love this basics series...keep and it up and you'll be the new goto resource for all things OT. excellent work!

Thank you for your tutorials with OT !
Really great video.
Relief from the damned user manual! This is great. Thank you.
hah! glad it was helpful 👍👍👍

Great stuff.Nice and clear presentation. Very helpfull. Thank you!

thank you! even if you learn these functions once or twice it's sooooo easy to forget them, so many things to keep in mind with this machine!
excellent, thank you!
muting a neighbor track mutes automatically the parent track, why. For what is it used for?
slot trig mode: with page etc you have access to 1-4 how do you have quick acces to 5-9?

If a person knows the Dtakt/DTone, does it give a good base knowledge for using Octa ? What other vids should I watch to get started w O Track?

Wow thx I knew I subbed for a reason haha
hey thanks a lot! very glad to see people are getting a good value out of this video
550... you reference..variations....what do you mean? Variations of what and how? Thanks

came on this video through a search, looking for info on the fill mode on OT watched this instead. I'm not even mad. Is this machine just bottomless??
wait is this mkii? or original?
this functionality is exactly the same between Octatrack versions, the operating system features are 100% identical. in the video is a mk1 unit
Thanks for the beginner approach! I think there might be an error at 3:17 in tracks mode trig 1-8 wonˋt affect midi but start disconnected tracks (pattern settings: play free)! What do you think about the mk2?

I believe that 'trig mode' setting is for 'plays free' tracks?
... just the thing to gett the delay proper sett up is gold worth ...not to talk of the many extra levels of interaction you show
I barely knew these things existed even after many months of owning the Octatrack :D

You can choose also a start point using slice mode -- try it with cymbals or snares ;)
