Now this is indeed a lovely surprise to see, and especially to hear this 'lost' version of the number. But it does indeed show "I Walk Away" to be the stronger character introduction, as well setting the tone of a dark comedy. And that train whistle sure harkens to another famous factory whistle...
I agree. I thought "I Walk Away" was the best thing in the Broadway version, and certainly the most Fred Ebb-ish. Don't know why it wasn't included in this Chicago production, unless it was heard at other performances.
@@auroraspiderwoman5886 It was def. in the later Arlington run and used much as it was on Broadway so I assume it was written after the original version? Sadly no librettos have ever been published for this piece in any of its forms.
The evolution of this musical is nothing short of fascinating. I saw the Broadway incarnation three times, including the final performance where Chita had laryngitis and recalibrated her entire performance into sprechstimme in real-time; one of the most extraordinary performances I've ever seen anyone give.
Thank you This has always been my favorite version of the show. What a happy surprise to see some video footage. My appetite is whet and I want to see the whole thing. Thank you!
The Chicago production was by far the most elaborate of the three. And Chita, fresh from playing Roxie in "Chicago" in Toronto, Las Vegas, and London, was in top form.
@@auroraspiderwoman5886 She was indeed - her Roxie in London was on another level. Throwing steps from “West Side Story” into her Roxie monologue and with tweaked ending to “Funny Honey” and a tweak in “Roxie” that showed her character taking much more control than normal. I’m so glad I got to see that as it was a masterclass.
I have a DVD of the entire show when it was at the Signature, with Chita and George Hearn. It is my favorite show of all time - just brilliant. I saw the last incarnation on Broadway, and was horrified at how it had been mutilated.
This is a cool amazing video I never seen before of this show. I wish these full videos would be released from someone or the theatre themselves because there are performances that are historic that you can’t repeat ever.
I have such a soft spot for this show, a friend in New York stole me a Playbill and mailed it to me haha. Chita's jokes are fun but I get why they switched to the other version, it's too low-key of an introduction for this character.

I was lucky enough to see this production back in October 2001 at the Goodman. Thank you so much for posting this. On Chita's 89th Birthday too!!

I was there too -- but didn't know she has laryngitis that night. Wow, that made that performance even more special!!
Thank you

@@susanrg can you pleaseee share I loved the Signature version
Creepy, ominous, perfectly atmospheric. As always, thanks for sharing!
As a gigantic fan of THE VISIT, this is quite a treat. Thank you for posting this!

Please post the full show. It’s a treasure
Wonderful.
Why it took so long to get to Broadway? I never knew it was premiered in 2001....
Greatness

Love Chita, hated the show!
