Just to let everyone know, this clip is from an episode filmed in 2016. They have also done a test of sharp cheddar (as opposed to the extra-sharp in this test), and Cabot Vermont Cheddar ranked first and Tillamook Sharp Cheddar ranked second in the new test.
This test was extra sharp cheese. The new test is simply sharp cheddar.
@Marta Aberg - That’s correct. Once again, someone at ATK posted the wrong link for this current test. This test was conducted in 2018, and the correct link is listed below.

Cabot is my favorite.
Cabot is the best. Not surprising at all.

And it’s behind a paywall
I worked at a market in Portland, Oregon. We had a regular customer whose sister would visit from Wisconsin every summer. Before going back to Wisconsin, the sister would buy several bricks of Tillamook cheeses to take back. Solid endorsement.
Kerrygold is AMAZING!
Amen
Bridget has a great sense of humor.
Cabot is definitely my favorite but I'm sure that's just a personal preference. Also if you can get it up in VT it's noticeably better than the storebought stuff.
Cabot cheese is really good and they make a line of "Legacy Collection" varieties that have some interesting notes of flavor. The Farmhouse Reserve is my favorite.
if you have a trader joes, try their unexpected cheddar, it's like a cross between sharp cheddar and a good parmesan.
Cabot Seriously Sharp FTW!
@@bodyofhope Absolutely the best sharp cheddar cheese in the dairy case. Very tangy, a little bit crumbly, as good a cheddar as you will ever find. And reasonably priced.
@@faithnelson2013 sounds like Kerrygold Dubliner cheese. I
No Tillamook!? Come on, guys.
who?
Tillamook cheese factory is on US 101, not very far from the Pacific Ocean/Oregon coast. I'd say it qualifies as being in the West. I have a block of Tillamook extra sharp white cheddar in my refrigerator. Purchased at a chain grocery store.
Definitely qualifies as west. Im in the treasure valley in Idaho, i have never seen tillamook white cheddar. I wonder if they produce the white cheddar for the east coast, but you can find it because you're close enough to where its produced, therefore more selection of that brand?
@@steakwilliams4448 I can find it easily in Central Washington (Wal-Mart, Costco, Safeway), but I don't recall looking for it (or seeing it) in Spokane.
SAME! Favorite! ❤️
@@steakwilliams4448 I'm from Boise, ID. The Tillamook extra sharp cheddar is my favorite extra sharp cheese. And it is available here in the Treasure Valley. I'm sorry, I just can't remember where. Albertson's, perhaps???
I agree...it's a shame they didn't have any Tillamook cheese. I live in Northwest Wyoming and I can find it at my local grocery store. The first time I tried it was back in 1997 while on vacation in Oregon. We stopped at the Tillamook cheese factory....what a fun experience... we've returned 4 more times over the last 22Yrs.🧀
Wow you learn something new every........ time I watch America's Test Kitchen. How great are they!
Real imported British cheeses are now available in Supermarkets here on the East Coast. Lidl carries their own brand British Extra Mature, and Acme Markets has the Cathedral City Extra Mature and Vintage varieties, all are far better than anything produced here in the US, save clothbound raw milk rarities found only in the best speciality cheesemongers.
I've yet to come across a good cheese when I've been in the US, and supermarket cheeses have been pretty poor. Any of those 3 would pale in comparison to Kean's Cheddar (for example).
On the west coast..... It's orange!...... Ummmm Tillamook would like a word with you...VERY surprised its not on the panel.
No Tillamook? what a shame
Tillamook loses always in the flavor department but it is amazing for melting.
In their most-recent test of supermarket sharp cheddar (not extra sharp), Tillamook Sharp Cheddar came in 2nd place behind Cabot Vermont Cheddar.
@@Amocoru I always buy Black Label Tillamook, it has been aged the longest.
No way in hell Kraft cheddar is even close to beating Tillamook. Not on your best day, Kraft.
@@hxhdfjifzirstc894 Agreed. This is kind of ridiculous.
I love these people they truly feel like family to me
was tillammock cheese a contestant. one of my favorites
Disappointed not to see Tillamook.
Enjoyed this video! Keep them coming!
The Washington State University creamery sells cougar gold and it’s really really good. You have to order it unless you happen to be near Pullman. It’s one of those things you get for someone who loves good cheese as a gift.
Tillamook cheddar from Oregon is pretty good. Do you test West Coast dairy products?
I agree. And the 24-month aged Tillamook cheddar is white, despite the representation that all the aged cheddar cheese on the West coast is yellow. And it's definitely West coast cheese, Tillamook Oregon is on the Oregon coast. Superior to everything that they tasted.
capitanosmaw, they do test West coast products if they're widely available. In the most recent round of testing of supermarket cheddar, Tillamook Sharp Cheddar came in second place behind Cabot Vermont Cheddar.
Tillamook also makes great ice cream. 😋
Tillamook is definitely my favorite.
I really wish they would show a few more items on these videos, rather than just showing 3 or 4.
If you buy the magazine, watch the TV show, or subscribe to the Web site you can see the whole list, and you support their research and testing program at the same time. This short UA-cam clicks are free, but they're just "appetizers."
It's a 26 minute program.
Yeah, and WTF is Kraft included for? Why waste my time with that?
Love these videos. Thanks
No, sorry, not always orange on the West Coast. We have truly excellent extra sharp cheddar cheese here from Tillamook Creamery. It is white and every bit as good as the Kerrygold. The aged cheese doesn't melt as much because it's drier.
I love Tillamook.
Tillamook cheese, Tillamook butter, and Tillamook ice cream are all my favorites.
Old Croc is the tastiest I've had from a grocery store.
I'm surprised it wasn't there.
Tilamok
love kerry gold, but you can get the same and a bit better with trader joes unexpected cheddar. less expensive too.
Tillamook is top tier
Tillamook in Oregon & Burnett Dairy in the Midwest are the BEST
Bandon in our fridge. Oregon coast
Tillamook is my go to 😋
Old Crock is delicious. In my opinion much better than kerrygold. If you ever want to buy more than 3 packs talk to the grocery manager and ask if you can get it a discount price. Most will.
I have to admit, I didn’t know Kerrygold made cheese. I only know about their butter. I’m going to have to find that cheddar and try it.
Kimberly Robinson I didn't know that either and now I can't wait to try it.
Same here. The butter is a big step up from other brands. If the cheese is likewise, I gotta get me some.
It's excellent cheese and at times they have it at Aldis stores very reasonably priced.
Only Kerrygold butter here in Knoxville Tennessee
Try some British extra mature Cheddar, it's amazing!
I have some Cabot aged 5 years and it is outstanding.
I have purchased some of their cheeses before and love it, but also love the other two brands also and have purchased them also.
Hello.......love the show..........love all of the cooks.....🤗💗
With the resources of ATK they should get products from all over the States not just the east.
Tillamook is from out west.
tillamook extra sharp vintage white is the best american extra sharp cheddar.
Agree. Tillamook's White Extra Sharp is somehow better than their Orange Extra Sharp. Amazing stuff!
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one questioning why Tillamook was left out. Tillamook extra sharp white cheddar is amazing. I also stand by their butter and icecream, all good! I live in Oregon but I've found it in other states far away at regular chain stores.
I live in Oregon & my son used to drive truck & several times he delivered Tillamook sharp white cheddar to Wisconsin!!! One of the guy’s at the warehouse he delivered to, finally tasted the Tillamook & said he wasn’t eating Wisconsin anymore.
I like it when you taste at least five (5)?options. It feels more like a taste test and less like product endorsements.
Yeah, this is a paid advertisement at best.
Every city should have a place you can buy small, local cheese shops
BlueHen123 BUY not BY
I can barely afford to buy the higher quality pricey cheeses, much less than an entire cheese shop, small or not.
@@SaulBadd Boo Hoo, get off the internet and make some money snowflake!
Try your local delis.
For sharp, aged cheddar, I love Widmer's cheese. They have 1 - 15 year aged Cheddars and they're great! And you can get them shipped.
Can't beat cheddar from Cheddar in England. Its amazing.
My face when someone explains their Pokémon team to me: 1:16
Tillamook and Cabot are legit cheese with the three required ingredients: milk, enzyme (rennet), and salt. Most name brands add in extra chemicals, additives, and preservatives making it a cheese-food-product and not authentic cheese.
Cabot is just a step above. They are all just fine, but Cabot is especially great at room temperature. Well worth a try.
Private Selection makes a Vermont sharp white cheddar that is over the top delicious. I love eating with a tiny smear of raspberry preserves. It's like a tiny bite of cheesecake heaven.
Reminds me of the wheels of cheddar wrapped in red wax we used to get when I was a kid.
Love you guys/gals!!!
Again, these tests are irrelevant to most of us who live outside the Northeast. Here in Wisconsin, Cabot is available, but has a very hard time competing against all the cheese made locally.
I love Cracker Barrel Vermont White here in Ohio.
Coastal rugged mature English Cheddar.....Costco......the best I’ve tasted
Just saw a tip on Serious Eats to use a regular cheese like cheddar for flavor but also add some American Cheese and the emulsifying agent that makes it melty will make the regular cheese melty too.
maybe its just me but TILAMOCK sharp cheddar is best.
Good to know that I can use my favorite Cracker Barrel cheese to attempt to make mac and cheese from scratch.
Tillamook Cheese is made in Oregon, and they make a fantadtic extra white cheddar. I am unsure whete it is availble, other than mail order. I know they carry it in SE Texas, but not in Western NY.
I don’t think we had Tillamook brand until very recently in New England, or maybe it’s just true in CT. Cabot’s the regional brand around here.
Dunno if they sell Flagship cheddar many places in the US but it's fantastic
Beecher's, the makers of Flagship sell frozen mac and cheese. It's pricey but Costco sells huge trays of it at a better price. Awesome, full-flavor mac and cheese. I make simple but tasty casseroles with it. I even turned it into a seafood chowder once (with white wine, onions, parsley, lemon, veggies, etc.) and it was spectacular.
I wish you would include a few more choices. Being a "woodchuck" from VT I've always been a Cabot fan!!!
What is your opinon on liquid coconut oil vs regular coconut oil ?
I would love to see a video on taste testing butter. 💜💜💜
Just people eating butter with a spoon? 😂
They should taste Cracker Barrel Aged Reserve Cheddar and get back to me.
Cabot is my fav...by far.
Please compare more brands.
Aww man, how could you do this without including the two American cheddar experts: Tillamook on the west and Cabot on the east?
It's all advertising, at this point. Kraft?!? KRAFT CHEESE? WTF.
Cabot is my favorite for the price and ease of finding
Old Croc is a phenomenal cheese. Private Select makes a great bulk extra sharp cheddar...
I love cracker barrel!
Love Kerry Gold products
When I think of "supermarket cheese", I guess it means something slightly different to me - you know, store brands ;p
I happen to come from a major dairy state and even the el-cheapo supermarket near me has a fair variety including sharp and mild Cheddars in both "white" and "yellow". I tend to prefer yellow for mild and white for sharp/x-sharp.
Most of the cheese I buy is Tops, Save-a-Lot, Wegmans or Aldi brand.
We scoff at cracker barrel cheese in Wisconsin. Too many local dynamos. Most of our supermarkets have 2 cheese areas.
Tillamook Extra Sharp White Cheddar 2 Years rules, but may not be available in your area.
hmm... i have to search for that one now...
They sell Kerry Gold white aged reserve cheddar (aged 24mths) all over the west coast. I've bought it and checked on their website and there are 25 stores within 10 miles that sell it. I live is Sacramento, CA
My favorite is Old Croc extra sharp - it is Australian and it is FREAKING AMAZING!!!! It has the best cheddar taste and it has an incredible texture - reminds me of an authentic Parmesan, with crunchy, crystally bits... It is in the premium cheese section with the Kerrygold. Everyone I have ever served it to was floored, and wanted to know where to buy it...
It is good!
Costco has an English Coastal cheddar that is fantastic.
They also have Kerry Gold. One of my favorites
A lot of people here saying tillamook in the comments. I agree, but in southern oregon there’s also face rock creamery, which blows tillamook away imo.
It's downright stupid to have Kraft cheese, but no Tillamook. I've never even heard of Face Rock Creamery, but I know for damn sure it's better than Kraft.
Anything Kerrygold is a superior product - made from grass fed cows and is always delicious!
My favorite is Tillamook
I guess they were concentrating on national brands? - but Cabot is award wining and quite amazing, however I've been eating Cracker Barrel all my life and love it also.
I would gladly help Bridget work on any preconceived weight issues for sure.
Tillamook is my fav.
I'm on the west coast and I prefer white cheddar. The sharper the better!
Cows Creamery , extra old cheddar from Prince Edward Island is amazing . It won the 2014 world championship .
Cows Creamery makes Avonlea Clothbound Cheddar, right? That's a really good cheddar. I usually buy Agropur Grand Cheddar or Baldersons, as they are easier to find in Ontario. The Baldersons isn't as good, but it's good enough and not as expensive. I like these as snacking Cheddars. Too good and too expensive for making mac and cheese.
For cooking, I buy a house brand cheese that FreshCo carries called Best Buy. It's dirt cheap but compares well against Cracker Barrel, Black Diamond, and the like. Perfect for mac and cheese, cheddar sauce for broccoli or cauliflower, grilled cheese sandwiches, or topping a burger. As far as house brands go, I think it compares well with Presidents Choice but it's priced like No Name.
I post this assuming you're also Canadian, lol.
I came here to see how Tillamook did and well it was not included so the test is invalid lol
There are a few imported and domestic sharp cheddars that are in regular rotation in my house. There's one from Australia called Old Croc; Cabot from Vermont; Kerrygold, certainly; and there's one more but I can't remember the brand. Cracker barrel once in a while, if I want something milder. I don't buy Tillamook just because the package is too big (I will eat too much of it).
Kroger's Wisconsin Extra Sharp Cheddar Cheese is wonderful!
I can't even find Cracker Barrel anymore
Not really worth looking. Even at the time this video was made, it had plummeted in quality. Definitely not the cheese to look for if you want a quality cheddar.
Cabot Seriously Sharp is the best supermarket brand I've found, and very close to Black Diamond Private Reserve Cheddar found at Sams. Both are absolutely phenomenal. Both are drier and definitely sharper than most other 'Sharp' cheddar cheeses; They're nutty, a little funky, and oh so creamy and delicious.
Cheese, why I could NEVER go vegan. (Sarcasm... I love meat entirely too much to even consider it)
How can it be drier & oh so creamy at the same time?
These guys and gals all seem so much happier now that Chris Kimball is not there.
The producers of Cracker barrel WOULDN'T tell us how long their cheese was aged!
Red flag IMO
Is test kitchen an old TV show? Cause it sure feels like it with the way they talk, the camera shots and they crowd cuts
Bruno Souza I miss when Chris Kimball was the host and ran things. man, women ruin everything.
@@jetnut89 why?
No, this episode is new. It is shown on PBS. You might find full episodes there.
@@Bards.98 I like Chris's personality. He knew how to keep things interesting and informative. I feel like this new format is trying be too mainstream.
jetnut89 what decade are you from? I guess you think that they should be barefoot and pregnant cooking your dinner. A**!
I have to agree with the test panel,
I prefer the Cracker Barrel sharp cheddar cheese myself. 👍👍
How did Cabot not make this test? Extra sharp is great and super sharp is the bomb at a great price point if you buy it at the Big Club stores.
Great video. I like hoop cheese
I wonder which would be the best extra sharp cheddar cheese for mac 'n cheese. He said the extra sharp is aged more so it tends not to do so good at melting. Cracker Barrel seems to be the favorite for melting but it's white, and mac 'n cheese for me should be orange,
Tillamook special reserve is what I buy, but I'll have to try out the winner and runner up here.
Why don't you try some KRAFT? I hear it's WONDERFUL. ATK said it's WONDERFUL.
Cannot beat Cabot!❤
Tillamook, for the win! ❤️
Has anyone tried Old Croc Extra Sharp. From Australia it's my favorite. The only place I've seen it is Walmart. Label says Grass Feed Cows, aged 18+ months.
Love cheese
adams reserve cheddar is my favorite.
