      Yo Alex, i will start running the madcow 5x5 program(switching the bench with dips). I am thinking of adding assistance exercises and abs and pull ups and stuff are easy to program but how would you incorporate belt squats and RDLs? (I think i definitely need some volume for my legs, i have a pretty dominant lower back). And would you think a conditioning/active recovery day (45min.) after Day 3 would hurt my progress?

    Started implementing this about 3 months ago. I've always had a problem packing on weight, and especially after my novice gains progress was minimal, so I went from doing 10+ exercises per workout to a basic novice program with compound movements and progressive overload. My arms even look bigger in rest than they used to when i did isolation movements every workout. Not only that but seeing the bar with more and bigger plates week to week has revitalised my passion for training.

The trick is: contemplate all those 'dark truths' you've experienced so far...then think of something to counteract each one of them. I call these mental weapons. You will be repeatedly exposed to bull$shit in this life...luckily most are repetitious & you will probably already have the tool to deal with it. What you’ve said is worth gold Alex, I 100% agree with you. However there is one thing I need to add:
    What Alex is saying is correct, if you’re natty get stronger to get bigger however you still need that mind to muscle connection, you see I built a 140 kg deadlift at only 52 kg bw, my legs and back are my best muscle parts. I built a 75kg bench however I wasn’t using my chest properly and over extending my shoulders, had I been focusing on using my chest, I would’ve
    1. Been able to bench more as the chest is the stronger muscle group
    2. Seen better muscle gains
    I’ve recently realised that this problem was due to my neglecting of my rear delts that pushed my shoulder forwards and affected my chest gains. I’ve started doing rear delt every workout and my chest gains are booming and so is my bench, haven’t gone for a 1Rm for a while but I know I’m much stronger
    Sorry for the long post 😅

  • @buddyryan875
    @buddyryan875 4 роки тому +1

    Yes 20 years doing this. And this sums all everything important. The difference between success and failure at this. Would add that some people are going to do it too quickly and get hurt or their form will go to shit and eventually get hurt or max too quick and give up. You've got to do it slow 5 lbs a week on compounds and 1 lb a week on small muscles. Finally you have your nervous system variable. So when your nervous system gets taxed from 12 weeks of this you've got to back off and start small on a new program. Build up again over 12 weeks. You've got to eat for the gains. You want the gains eat for it.

    I started the Novice program a month ago. I've been working out inconsistently for a few years before. First bro-splits, then push-pull. Pretty much doing the same weights month after month, machines, so on. Yeah, I gained some muscle, but the lack of clear progress was demotivating.
    Now I'm actually working towards numbers and mastering them as I go. It's lots of fun and fantastic feeling stronger every week. Really an eye opener. Never trained exclusively with heavy weights and lower reps, but it feels fantastic.

    That's true if you are young. Once you have trained for 30 years, there is no such thing anymore like constant overload for a natural bodybuilder. Otherwise everybody would press 800 pounds on the bench. Instead you have to vary your exercises and rest time between sets.
    So it is NOT just about getting stronger. Train smarter, not harder if you wanna lift for ever.

    It's probably best to do both strength training AND volume to get the best of both, simply training strength only won't maximise hypertrophy, of COURSE it's good to train for strength but it doesn't cause as much hypertrophy as higher volume training, this has been shown in many studies and has definitely been working for me as a natural lifter, and also check out the London Real interview with Jeff Cavalier where he speaks of people only focusing on the the numbers

    As a natural , could I train the same muscle(s) every day if I recover fast enough? The problem is , as a natural, how do I know if I’m actually recovered if I’m not sore or fatigued? Like for biceps. I can do multiple sets of 10 reps using different dumbbell exercises until failure. I will be fatigued but then the next day I will “feel” like I can do it again. If I’m not fatigued anymore then that means I can do that everyday right?

    You’ve probably already made videos on it and I would appreciate if you could link them, but how should one properly progressive overload? I hit a new bench PR of 285. I don’t want to eat to much because I already weigh around 210, I’d like to lose weight without losing the bench I have. Any advice would be great.
    Also, any lifts involving much lower back aren’t possible for me as I’ve had a few injuries around that area if that’s important.

    Hey man. I was wondering if you could help me out. I've been dealing with some wrist pain in my wrist to the point where I've been taking days off from using the computer and even bought a vertical mouse.
    The thing is my wrist is so thin I think part of the reason for the pain is because I have no muscles... it's literally just bone and whatever tendons are there and I can wrap my thumb and index finger around it with no problems.
    I want to make my wrist stronger but I don't want to hurt it even more in the process. Are there any very light exercises I can do to try to strengthen it? A while back I tried doing handstands and I think I fucked my wrists up then too bc they hurt for a while after that

    Muscle size is the GPP for muscle strength. Therefore, why focus on SPP for GPP? Progressive volume is the cause of increased muscle size. This can be done through increased load, but not soley.

    Being able to raise volume is also raising strength. If for example you can only do ten pushups, then you get stronger an can do 30 pushups, then 50 pushups and so on, you are getting stronger, and the pecs are getting bigger too.

    True, BUT ... as a natural, it's super hard to get strong(er) if you wanna get/stay lean at the same time. What's the point of getting stronger and building more muscle if you have to force feed yourself and get fat? You won't look good that way (unless bear mode is your definition of aesthetics). At the end of the day, you will have to put on a lot of weight (fat) to reach high numbers, just to diet down and lose most of the strength again. For my part, I just wanna stay lean and look decent year round and go for small increases in my numbers at the gym.

      See my video on efficient weight gain, you don't need to get fat bro. ua-cam.com/video/htZqeRiwtDc/v-deo.html&t

      @@AlexLeonidas Still not convinced tho. Last year, I benched 245x3 on incline. This year, I'm 20lbs lighter (not "fat" anymore, visible abs) and guess what my incline bench went down 20lbs too. It was an exact trade-off. Now I'm trying to get to a higher number while staying this lean, but no matter how hard I push, my bench doesn't improve. I will try a little higher volume, but I don't think I can get to that level again without putting on fat (and start looking worse).

And bodybuilders are bigger then strenght athleates, so they know what they are doing.

    Its worth mentioning that it is posible to gain strength without mass, purely through neural proficiency (when talking about low reps, 1-5)
    however, you cant nervous system your way through reps of 8-15, take for example belladrome cyclists, those guys ALL have huge quads, you cant NS your way through a belladrome race, at some point, to produce that much repetitive force, you need bigger muscles, theres just no way around it (rowers are also a good example, look at their backs).
    Dont get me wrong, im not saying to go do gpp and expect muscle gains. Strongmen and bodybuilders are the biggest for a reason.
    Getting stronger in the 8-15 rep range is pretty much guaranteed muscle gains, theres just no neural adaptations to be made to that kind of training and you know its just muscle, no two ways about it.

    • @thomasjameswilliamson5225
      @thomasjameswilliamson5225 5 років тому +1

      If you go from doing 3 reps with 225lbs on bench press to doing 3 reps with 265lbs then you WILL of got bigger in the process. As you have got measurably stronger.
      However, where people get confused is they will go from doing 8 reps on 225lbs to doing 3 reps with 265lbs, I would say in this situation you haven't actually got stronger. In other words someone who can bench 225lbs for 8 already has the muscle mass to bench 265lbs for 3. All you have done is work in a lower rep range and make neurological adaptations.
