I have seen this movie countless times , and everytime I see something I didn't see the last time ... For instance : when Sargent Stadinco and his crew bust Strawberry's house,Cheech and his crew are looking in the window . It's the little stuff in the background now . This movie never got old .
I'm in Vancouver, BC... the birthplace of Cheech and Chong. Tommy Chong used to own a club called the Shanghai Junk... a topless bar. C&C used to do comedy sets between dancers. It's now my bank. I saw them onstage a few years ago, and they said Up In Smoke was based on the stoner culture of Vancouver. Sgt. Stedenko was based on real-life Vancouver undercover drug cop Abe Snidanko. After the movie came out, his cover was blown, so they had to ship him to another country. C&C sent him an autographed photo when he retired. 😋
Another fun fact: Tommy said they got high while making this movie, but they waisted so much film, that they never filmed high again. 😋 And other fun fact: Just 2 blocks south from Shanghai Junk, was Vie's Chicken and Steak House... Jimi Hendrix's grandmother Nora, was the cook. Jimi stayed up here for a bit as a child, then returned after being discharged from the army. He used to practice at Vie's after hours. His grandma Nora is famous in her own right. One of the first settlers in Vancouver, co-founded Vancouver's first black church, and was a community organizer. Her house is a heritage home... Hendrix House, and she's the first black woman to have a street named after her in Vancouver. She's also on a Canadian Heritage postal stamp. She was an amazing woman.
Tommy Chong is a truly talented guitar player. Anytime he's on-screen playing guitar, it's really him. I live in a small town called Appleton, Wisconsin. My niece works at a music shop here in town. About 10 years ago she sold a Fender Stratocaster guitar to Tommy Chong. I happened to be in the store and met him. Obviously, he was much older then, but I'll never forget hearing that familiar voice. I'm in my 60's now but meeting him made me feel like a kid again.
I was a little girl when I first listened to Cheech and Chong’s comedy albums. I didn’t quite get the pot humor, but my favorite of their bits was “Sister Mary Elephant.” “Claaassss, claaasssssss…SHUUUUUT UPPPPPP!!!!”
Cheech & Chong actually did win a battle of the bands contest without playing any instruments. They just went up on stage and did improv comedy that cracked everyone up.
And that "punk" show makes it obvious why punk had basically zero sales in America, even Cheech in 1977 said you don't have to have talent or ability to play punk.
My mom and dad went to see them live in Memphis in 1980 or 81. Before C & C started the show, a guy came out on stage and sat on the edge. His shirt pockets were stuffed as full as they would go with joints. He started lighting them and handing them out to the audience. My parents were in the balcony, but my mom went down and got one. The place was totally smoked out like the Alice Bowie concert.
Been watching this since I was a kid. One of my father's all time favorites. I've always been a big fan of their entire catalog of movies. Keep watching, they're comedy gold.
I knew this one would be perfect for you. 😄 If you watch Cheech & Chong's Next Movie (that's the title), you'll get cameos from Paul Reubens, Edie McClurg, and Cassandra Peterson. If you listen to their albums, you'll get a cameo from people like George Harrison playing on their songs. They were basically rock stars by doing their comedy.
1976, I was 19 hanging out at the lakefront ( Lake Pontchartrain) in New Orleans on a Sunday afternoon where I ended up smoking the baddest shit ever with some Hell's Angels. I coughed my lungs out and after two hits was high as a kite. I asked what the fuck was that and the dude replied " Oh, that was just some some horse shit I had". Those were the days.
I could legit hop out of bed any time day or night with no rehearsal and get up on stage and act out this entire movie scene for scene, word for word. Front ways, backways, sideways, slantways and any other ways that you can think of. And up until now, I've pressed them all Charlie...
Imagine watching this movie with 8 Post Teenage High School Freaks, Dropping Acid and Smoking Pot in a Chevy Impala (like Cheech's Impala), at the Drive-in movie theater in 1978, and you will know that this movie, was all about us. From the 60's, through High School in the 70's, and everyday after, we lived this movie. In deed, Up In Smoke was like a validation of who we were. As stand up comedians, they released their first album "Cheech & Chong" in 1971 and quickly rose to fame as we would all gang up in the car, and drive around smoking dope while listening to them on the radio. And girl, I could tell you some stories. Needless to say, Cheech and Chong quickly became our heroes. Along with Led Zeppelin, of course. But yeah, those were the days.
As a new 'smoker' myself, i'll just let you know, that I paused this video 1 second in, so I could, go get something. Grew up on these as a kid, but didn't touch anything until now, at 50
My partner told me that, once upon a time, her sister could recreate the Ajax Girl's freakout perfectly. Cheech and Chong's "Santa and his old lady" routine is a holiday tradition in our house. Cool reaction, man.
C&C have recently confirmed that this film was mostly improvised. They knew where the scenes were supposed to go, but there wasn't a script. They just did their comedy, fitting it into the situations that had been outlined.
Grew up listening to Cheech & Chong plus George Carlin albums. Heard all of Cheech & Chong albums before I smoked a joint or drinked alcohol (drinking age was 18 then). They were funny when your sober. Lots of their album skits was in Up In Smoke. But I did see this movie at a theater & home video stoned. So I went for it. They had a hit few years before with the song *"Earache My Eye".* The song in the film played by *"Alice Bowie"* (A cross between Alice Cooper & David Bowie) was that hit single. I loved the ajax lady in this film. Music was great. And I didn't stare at that guy's neck.
Just found your channel & really enjoyed your reaction/analysis..So I naturally subscribed.. When released,, This movie was a huge hit.. The song played at the "Battle Of The Bands" is actually one of their hit songs called "Earache My Eye" & I would definitely suggest listening to it,, All the lyrics are really fun/funny..Other must hear songs by Cheech & Chong "Basketball Jones" & "Born In East L.A." & Also their "Peter Rooter Commercial",, Etc..Etc.
Remember watching this with my mates years ago ,we were well stoned and chuckled all the way through film ,happy days, in my 70s now really enjoyed your reaction ,thanks Emily.
@ 1:55 haha I gave my dad one of those coffee cups and a half oz of my homegrown for his birthday and he loves it! Also has never used both functions, because it looks tricky to clean.
nice to see someone/anyone reacting to this classic, i seen it new, own it on dvd today, but havent watched it for a long time, i love watching reactors discovering our music from the 70s, and now one of our classic films from then, we actually was pretty cool, long ago before we all grew old, and we had some pretty kicka55 music and movies,,,,enjoy, as much as i will/do/have
Great reaction . From an old hippie vet on Veterans Day, this reaction made my day. I still listen to low rider, searching and the song earache in my eye. . All great songs. 😊👏👏🥰
It is one of the funniest movies ever....Up there with Blazing Saddles, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Airplane, National Lampoon's Vacation and Animal House. Just that damned funny.
I've been a fan of Cheech & Chong for decades. Had all their albums &, like many of my friends, can quote much of the dialogue, even 45 years later... including the song lyrics. Welcome to our world! BTW, we're gonna hold you to the costume statement... but it should be for New Years '24! Free the Tiddies!
And the closing number is "Earache My Eye" from their "Big Bambu" album. In fact, everything you see is basically from all of their albums, including the bird's "Dave's Not Here" routine. The nuns were from the "Sister Mary Elephant" bit.
They helped introduce a lot of comedic talent in their films. From Paul Ruebens, i.e. Pee Wee Herman, to Michael Winslow, the human sound effects machine.
The OG stoners. You should have seen this at the drive-in. Some forget that both Cheech & Chong are very talented musicians which they include in many of their movies. Now, since you've started, you must do "Still Smoking" and "Nice Dreams", along with some of the non-stoner movies like "The Corsican Brothers" and "Yellow Beard" which is a collaboration with the Monty Python folks.
One of the cool things that happened while filming the movie was that the battle of the bands captured some of the first American punk bands early in their career. The filmmakers asked them to make themselves sound bad, which is why some of them appear a bit awkward. Some of the other Cheech and Chong movies are pretty good, although they slowly veered away from stoner comedy. The two had a falling out in the 80s, but got back together in 2010.
Up in smoke Thats where my money goes In my lungs And sometimes up my nose When troubled times Begin to bother me I take a toke And all my cares Go up in smoke
Two years before "Up in Smoke" arrived in theaters, the edgy comedy film of the summer of '76 was "Car Wash". It all takes place in one day at an actual Los Angeles car wash (located at Rampart and 6th St at the time). Richard Pryor and George Carlin appear. It's a slice of life, ensemble cast, comedy with a some drama. Subbed.
I got to comment on my favorite "if you know, you know" scenes. "The Led Zeppelin Joint" After they smoked that huge joint down to 2 inches, they pass it like it's a tiny roach. "El Roach-O" That is the moment Tommy Chong became the king of stoners. Anybody can smoke large amounts of weed, but Chong lit that tiny roach with a match, got it to hit and smoked it till it was gone. Hail to The King, baby.
One of my fondest memories is of watching this with my dad, he laughed so hard when Cheech asks "we're smokin dog shit?!" he literally began to weep he was laughing so hard. I miss my dad, happy holidays! Paper comes from tree farms grown to make paper. Don't worry about trees.
So glad you checkin out this great one, Im tokin as I watch it with you! My older brother had their 1972 Big Bambu album & thats what got me into them back then when I was 12-13! The sleeve for the record was a huge rolling paper & we did use it✌💖☮
I think these C&C movies were extremely underrated comedies. I remember seeing this on VHS a few years after it was released and I loved it, even though I've never done drugs. They've done some audio records of their skits which are also quite funny.
Strother Martin as Tommy's dad just starts this out right. This was so cool for a Drive-In viewing, especially if paired with their sequel. Definitely catch CHEECH & CHONG's NEXT MOVIE.
The comedy alblum cover, the actual record sheaf, was a rolling paper dispenser with a rolling paper large enough to roll that "cigarette" they were smoking in the car at the beginning.
Up in smoke is so classic, saw it when I was 15 and even though my teenage years were in the 2000's. The movie still had so much charm to it, and I'll say yes there's lots of great stoner comedies out there but Cheech and Chong's Up in Smoke started it all, the godfather of Stoner comedies And still really works in 2023.
That ol' El Camino you dreamt about, you really wanted the interior that I presumed 16 year old boys just imagined girls liked! Guess I'm proven wrong, these kids know what's going on! 😀My first car (at least when I had a license) actually was a '73 El Camino SS, however not with your desired styling. I only kept it for a year though, I wanted something to haul more snatch in. Since then I've grown to hate having people in my car, but have never gotten another El Camino. Maybe I should? This is a fun movie!! I don't remember right now if it's got one sequel or several, but there is at least one and you should watch that too. Thanks for uploading! Greetings from Sweden
I loved this movie, I had heard my uncles talk about how Cheech and Chong were some of the funniest all time comic duos so i watched this and immediately went back out to Blockbuster and rented the Sequel.... Still Smokin' and i hope you will too. Thanks for the great solo today
17:34 I knew a lady a few years before his movie was made who looks, speech and mannerism were exactly like her, and when I saw this, I almost fell out of my seat.
I remember watching this as a 7 year old from the back seat of my sister's boyfriends car at the drive-in. Our mom made her take me on her date. I was also told not to tell mom what movie we saw.
SO glad someone is finally reacting to one of the all-time great comedy duos! Thanks, Emily!!
I have seen this movie countless times , and everytime I see something I didn't see the last time ... For instance : when Sargent Stadinco and his crew bust Strawberry's house,Cheech and his crew are looking in the window . It's the little stuff in the background now . This movie never got old .
The minutes after Cheech picks up Chong in his car is some of the funniest shit I've ever seen.
Hey You aint a chick
Always been my favourite bit of any of their films.
In my top 5 funniest bits..... I'm 66 lol
HAY yew ainna chiiik!
Love the movie but nothing in the rest of the flick tops the car scene.
“Dave? Dave? Dave’s not here, man!!!”. If you know, you know. ;-)
Anytime I hear the name "Dave" that's the first thing I think of!. LOL.
"You keep on knockin' but you can't come in..." 😂 laughing at that
"Come back tomorrow night and try again!"
As kids in the 70's, we all had friends with a Cheech and Chong or George Carlin album. Fun childhood.
I'm in Vancouver, BC... the birthplace of Cheech and Chong. Tommy Chong used to own a club called the Shanghai Junk... a topless bar. C&C used to do comedy sets between dancers. It's now my bank. This is the king of Stoner comedies in my opinion. Cheech and Chong next movie is also hilariously funny😂
Red!
Well Holy Sheepsh*t I must agree.
I like Nice Dreams a lot too.
Gotta Agree w/that lol....Cousin Red is faf😁🤘
The lyrics to " Rock Fight" are awesome ! It makes the whole seen cooler .

Look for "Does Your Mama Know About Me" by Bobby Taylor and The Vancouvers. Co-written and performed by...
I would love to meet both C&C!
He killed it on "Mexican American"

@@kathyastrom1315 Thank you
The thing to know is this movie is really just a bunch of their bits from their comdey albums strung together.
I didn't know your name was Alex!
Uh his name is Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalph
Dave's not here man.
still cracks me up, 30yrs later
For context a "lid" is an ounce, and for $100 in 78 translates to almost $500 per ounce. Prices like that now are only in DC and Illinois
My mom and dad went to see them live in Memphis in 1980 or 81. Before C & C started the show, a guy came out on stage and sat on the edge. Definitely the king of stoner films and interesting to see Los Angels locations as depicted in 1978:)

I'm not big into stoner stuff myself, but no Christmas is complete without listening to Cheech & Chong's "Santa Claus and His Old Lady".
The part where he calls the reindeer is what I set as my ringtone this time of year.
they played it on the radio here LOL
i ws laughing so hard i had to pull over

My favorite Cheech & Chong movie is Things Are Tough All Over. Cheech & Tommy play dual characters.
Am glad you watch these older movies that were VERY POPULAR back in the day. This is one of the "HISTORICAL HILARIOUS" Movies everyone should see.
It is one of the funniest movies ever....Up there with Blazing Saddles, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Airplane, National Lampoon's Vacation and Animal House. Just that damned funny.

I think the opening intro in the car is one of the funniest scenes in movie history no matter what you think of C&C.
The dog taking his burrito wasn't scripted, it just happened for real.
Is it a week or a day? A weekday.
That was my late Stoney baby’s inside joke with me. My favorite line: “I didn’t know your name is Alex.”
LOVED your entire reaction, there were to many great moments. One of my favorites was when u compared the blond to the blond Muppet 😆😆😆

Born In East LA was great too.
Drive-in? "there's a spot over by the snack bar man . . . ."
Omg I watched this movie with my buddy nearly eveyday when I was a stoner and 16. Who am i kinding? Im still a stoner😂
This is my number one comedy movie of all time.
One of the cool things that happened while filming the movie was that the battle of the bands captured some of the first American punk bands early in their career. A couple weeks ago they were on a podcast and were grtting high with the host
Cheech and Chong toured with such head linning acts Alice Cooper and The Rolling Stones

"The Led Zeppelin Joint"
After they smoked that huge joint down to 2 inches, they pass it like it's a tiny roach.
"El Roach-O"
That is the moment Tommy Chong became the king of stoners. Anybody can smoke large amounts of weed, but Chong lit that tiny roach with a match, got it to hit and smoked it till it was gone.

I love High Emily. And reacting to this movie makes it even better.

I saw them live in 1978 in Harrisburg Pa....they basically did the entire movie on stage as a skit.....and everyone was blazing up....Peace!
The song they played on stage (earache my eye) made it to number 9 on the top 100 billboard chart, all by accident of course. true story!
Born in 86 grew up watching this Movie LOVE IT! LOL
Great Reaction To This Super Funny 🤣🤣🤣 Movie, Emily

i loved the Valium spareTire cover on the back of theVan!!!!😂🎉
The only time that "chongs" name is mentioned in the movie is when his dad started by saying "Anthony I wanna talk to ya"lol. So Chong is tony. Lol
