Govt exam coaching centres in the north and Study abroad consultancies in south are two of the most thriving industries in this country atm. Crores of investment
So why burning in your ass??😂😂
U hv covered a lots of points.
But You missed one of the important point.
That is, those who have cleared UPSC CSE once but didn’t get the adequate service then they are attempting UPSC CSE again to improve their rank. So New comers will not get level playing field or adequate chances to clear the exam.
This reform is also needed to stop those successful aspirants to give another attempt to improve their rank.
New comers need to do more hardwork..... Everyone has right to jump farther.
@@chhingariindian yes everyone has right.
But first they should resign from existing post & then they should give another attempt.
There's a bigger issue. UPSC doesn't really test the skill that is needed to become a good administrator or a police officer. What it test if we know the past and present data.
This is an absolutely naive take. Do you think questions in mains are based on memorization? Look at the essay paper. You'll understand
No brother you are mistaken. You cannot solve present problems without understanding the past. You need strong understanding of past, how it affects the present and what steps we can take for future.
No exam in the world does that! So what ur point?
Go around randomly picking people? In a country like India u want people to have such discretion without due process?
Exactly and just look at the overall result. I am sorry to say but the output is below standard, just take a look at any collectorate, it does not feel like a place run by top-class people. I somehow feel that these many years of preparations, and uncertainty somewhere make one a different person. Someone who is determined to prove his worth to the world and in that process they fail to do justice to the very service they are after.
That should not be allowed in a permanent position without accountability and transparency and as taxpayers cannot do against them
Why a constable can not become SP?
I have heard that NYPD has this rule of selection.
Why we don't try it here?
Elitism.
a necessary reform. There is no logic for continuing the IPS other than status and statusqousim. Police should walk the beat, manage station all before thirty and can then give exam to qualify for administrative role.
People will get promoted due to 'chatukarita', political connections, favours, etc. This will be the last nail in the coffin of meritocraticity.
@@bayonetofindia2034 how can we possibly erase the thin line between chatukarita and lust for status for becoming IPS then rather than coming in just because of determination to serve the ppl
In revenue department if you join as a clerk under the age of 25 then you may become at least the deputy collector. If you get political connections then it is possible to retire as a chief secretary.
Its a myth that IAS officers are paid less than Private Sector. You are only looking at their Salaries but if you add the cost of facilities they get including vehicles, bunglows, drivers, helpers, paid foreign trips etc their overall package is much higher than the private sector...
Correct apart from corruption
For once I agree with Shekar ji unquestionably. This is a tragedy that so many bright youngsters must face such bitter disappointment and have nowhere to turn.
There ought to be a Plan B. Something like a Class 2 service, or teaching in the secondary/primary schools at a reasonable salary
Wasted CTC. Why waste time over a never to be fixed problem? Last year a Babu emptied an entire stadium so that he could walk his dog another emptied a Water storage tank to find his phone. None of them were dismissed from service. The real reason for craze for these jobs is India's worst kept secret. NO accountability and UNLIMITED money. As Kejriwal's aatma would say "Sab mile hue hai".

the biggest proof that new IAS officers are completely unskilled for their job is that the ones who fail the exam can not find any useful job in the private sector other than coaching other aspirants. if the upsc was so good at finding "talent" then just sitting for the exam would be a point to highlight in your resume😂😂😂

You have raised an important question; UPSC exam has now become coaching-centric. While there are some self-study successes, most aspirants go through 2-3 years of expensive coaching. While the successful candidates are, no doubt, brilliant, scores of more brilliant are possibly left behind. It needs thorough and quick reform to ensure that the UPSC net is cast wider, there is no or little room for coaching and the aspirants do not have to waste years of their prime career time in preparing for the exam.
BA, Bcom, Bsc Degrees - majority people who are preparing for this Job belong to these degrees. They don't good opportunities Like Btech , MBA. 😕
You are not counting the students who prepared and did not appear for exams, and those who dropped in middle. Just by number of coaching institutes, 13 lakh is low. Actual numbers who waste atleast one year would be in the range of 50 llakhs
This should be discussed extensively and reforms should be introduced asap.
Thanks for picking up this topic.
What reforms?
Civil Services should recruit for JS from a pool of well qualified lateral entrants in mid career 35-45 yrs of age on a contractual basis. Block and district level Civil administration should be separated. IPS should be recruited from mid level Army/CAPF retirees who have stagnated in their careers. IFS should be separated and expanded.
Angoor nhi mile to khatee hai
What reform??? Should politicians be allowed in politics after 60?? Why don't you open your mouth there??
The best decision I think I took looking back was to focus on my professional growth and life in my late teens and early twenties and not get consumed by the UPSC mania that my Hindi heartland friends were consumed by. Looking back now that I am in my 40s, I have had such amazing experiences… Travelled the world, had personal and professional experiences that would only apply in the rarest of rare cases had I been selected in the UPSC - that too with a very high rank. Please do not waste your time. The system is flawed. Respect yourself.. listen to your own voice
You keep your mouth shut . Don't give Gyan. Angoor nhi mile to khatee hai

The payment of civil servants is not only in money. It come in the perks they get. That is what the private sector counterparts do not get. That’s why even IITians are also coming to join it.

A very important and relevant topic. It’s time our bright young men and women taper aspiration for a job through UPSC, give it a limited number of attempts and years and try to make life more productive. There is a need to be more realistic.

of course, you see it that way because you can imagine yourself of doing only that. There is no limit to the money he could have made in private sector. But some have different aspirations, but of course your imbecile mind wouldn't know of that.
Many Aspirants Cracked This Exam In 6th attempts also. U can check. 👍
People are ready with their hot takes but for most middle class and not so affluent folks, it is one of the very few ladders to social mobility. Rather than larping and ranting your envy for 'babudom' here, push for better opportunities elsewhere and most of the crowd will automatically fade away.
how is this one of the few ladders to social mobility?
@sahilnagpalx it's actually IIT, NIT and IIM
Most Toppers from UPSC are from these Institutions.
@@blushflush most toppers are from IITs because most students in india are engineers. URGENT REFORMS needed in COLONIAL system
Government should recruit people based on the required domain expertise and required skills rather than by conducting some stupid exam.

Then do you have good colleges at par with IIT -IIMs for all sections of society? What about the marginalized sections who didn't have the luxury of studying in top colleges? Not just UPSC, the IITs exams are all total waste of time in the sense they are not finding out the talented but only filters out those who are good at preparing for exams, these exams doesn't create or finds and admits critical thinking skill people. Just so you know, Noble laureates and world renowned people are not spending their life preparing for exams.
If people want to spend life time to prepare for these exams, that's fine, it's their choice, but the fact remains is that it has nothing to do with finding the best of the best. It has only to do with finding good preparer, and resources , means available for them to prepare.
If you fail UPSC, you are back to square 1. If you fail IIT, you can bank on 2nd tier colleges or even 3rd tier college. You won't be back to where you started.
The Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2023 was conducted on 28th May, 2023. A total of 10,16,850 candidates applied for this examination, out of which 5,92,141 candidates actually appeared in the preliminary examination, + exam fees only Rs 200 or no fees for many , so many attend to simply write exam without any intention .

IIT and AIIMS is not comparable because the next 50000 talented rejected have options here and abroad, in other govt or private college. The time spent on preparation for govt jobs is insane, and should be reformed
Nobody forced them to prepare for the examination... It's their own choice.
I have one thing to say, let the people decide what they want to choose. If some one wants to prepare for upsc why the hell others r having so much cramps 😂
Not a sustainable choice
It is because the country is losing its Human Resource. In the most productive years of their life, they are preparing for a stupid exam for years and years.
My point is govt can regulate misleading ads but u cannot simply say no do not prepare and just go something else. Still in large rural parts of India the education level is pathetic. If u curtail attempts or put very low age limit, its going to give further advantage to elite students.

Needed reforms
1. At max 3-4 attempts
2. Reduce the examination cycle period to 1 year.
3. Preference to students who couldn't qualify interview in other govt exams like CSIR, CAPF, SSC, State PSCs etc.
4. Early release of Prelims answer key. Currently UPSC release the answer key after releasing final selection list.
Examination cycle period is already 1 yr.. instead it should be twice a year
The most needed reform is to adjust the interview appeared candidates in some services such as group B gazetted services, as consultants to government, state governments should give them 10℅ preference in State PSC, Pvt Sector should hire them (via some on the job training) since they are really disciplined and hard working. Unless this happens, the tragedy of UPSC Aspirants will keep on perpetuating and will destroy most productive years of our youth
Third argument is total shit😂😂
Last Year's Prelims Was Very Very Tough. 😕
The system of directly recruiting officers in any service should be stopped . All must join as subaltern and gradually get promoted through performance and departmental tests.
If we have the system of taking in all only in subaltern ranks, more people would join. From among them who have the attitude, aptitude and competence and prove themselves should be promoted.
VP Menon was not an IAS or ICS officer but he rose to become the equivalent of the now Cabinet Secretary. He played a pivotal role in the integration of India.
Two former Union Secretaries had advocated shutting down the IAS shop.
Even doctors, engineers and IIM grads toil hard to get into civil services.
Why?
Not for social service. A doctor can do that by giving cheap or free medical services.
They all join for POWER, MONEY, STATUS and SUPERFAST CAREER.
One exam cannot gauge capability for different roles (administration, policing or auditing).
There can be a separate exam for the police and separate for administration, etc.
Conducting the exam twice a year can also do the job Shekhar ji.
In ips recruitment should be done at constable level later only promotion based on efficiency and performance....this will increase efficiency.....in police they recruit constable on gk ,sub inspector on gk ,deputy sp on gk ,sp on gk .......even highest recruitment is based on general study like geography history not on ipc ,crpc here we should think
Wonderful discussion on an important topic. Time to introspect.

It's unfortunate how obsessed we've become with external validation (especially in India), believing that only by clearing UPSC or securing a government job will we gain respect in society. I fail to comprehend this craze. There are numerous noble jobs with decent pay that we shouldn't be ashamed of. Many youngsters have fallen into this trap, but I sincerely wish for them to recognize their skills and focus accordingly. It would greatly benefit their well-being, allowing them to unleash their full potential.
Seeing atleast 3 of my friends fall prey to this frenzy, I'm happy for this episode of CTC.

Much needed episode. I have given 4 UPSC Civil services attempts including 2 UPSC Mains, but could not get my name in the final list. Despite having an engineering degree from a prestigious institute, I witnessed difficulty in the transition of my career with the option of only higher education being left. Though UPSC provides a great career indeed but one tends to forget how much talent we lose as a country. The issue raised by you are so much important. The system is so much against General category students. 0.078% out of which 50% are reserved & then we have general category. Imagine the odds. The system itself is a punishment. It's high time the Parents & Kids themselves analyzed what are their options. Is there data available a. How many from different caste groups make the attempt? b. How many do well & how many just miss the bus? c. What's there caste breakup? Point is these same kids can get a much better job in the market. If you speak to any business owner their only concern as on today is how to get a suitable talent. Many who are available are not hirable.

Out Of Lakhs These Are Few Intelligent People Who Got Selected Finally. 😕
@ThePrintIndia Ye Shekhar sir Kurta kahan se lete hain link please😊
Sir, the most important point (which you also mentioned is) if someone leaves their private sector job to prepare for UPSC for more than 3 years. They are now back nearly to being a fresher for the private Industry (that too only if they somehow retained a fraction of the skills they gained earlier when they were in their job). Everything that is studied for UPSC and other govt. exams, is for the most part, useless for a private job. (I am not saying one shouldn't study current affairs or history, just that studying them will likely not get a you a well paying job).
UPSC CSE should be limited to two attempt max. It will reduce the intensity of exam due to less competition. further, government should take measure to promote people from departmental services rather than appointing IAS as departmental head - to reduce the charm of UPSC and prevent youth wasting their best years
In JEE, the not selected Students' efforts don't go waste, as it will enhance their knowledge level in the same Engineering subjects, with which they can try to get selected in other top Engineering Colleges (in which case the not selected Students are not wasting their preparation for JEE).
Maximum 5 attempts for SC ST and a maximum of 3 attempts for all others is a solution.
Process for selection should be similar to that of the Armed Forces, the candidates must go through a SSB type selection process.
No of chances should be reduced.
Well, we have similar odds in every other thing in India due to population. But people still do it and find their way to the top. So, whatever keeps you moving, you keep doing it!
UPSC is fake exam
Its not intelligent exam like
IIT, IIM , GATE,
Its waste of time and energy of Indian youth
GATE and CAT are much more fake than UPSC exam, and easier too. All these exams, UPSC, GATE, CAT etc. test only rote learning and waste energy of youth
Too much injustice in every sector and every industry.
Great suggestion
Sir Please make a video on how one can achieve this upsc without coaching and what to follow what can be the approach
Critical issue for debate and examination. Multiple factors attract candidates towards civil services, some of them social, some aspirational and others economic. Govt needs to study carefully. Reduced number of attempts may be a low hanging fruit but better alternatives must exist that can prevent loss of many many productive years of life of an individual who after their last attempt is left without any hope of a job at a much later stage in life, without reduction in attractiveness of a civil service career.
Upper and Upper middle class already moved on from this high risk, low reward system.
Middle class is also rethinking before wasting time.
Number of attempts must cut down to half across all categories.
I was thinking if all this topper worship helps anyone. I feel this system needs to be dismantled. IAS needs to be recruited based on domain experience by the states they have to serve. Thus central control of civil servants needs to stop.
Agreed.. but its not the fault of coaching mafia.they are just making a business out of an opportunity. The civil services 23:40 were created by the british in a way where the government trains the recruits and tells them what and how to do. What we need now is people who know how to do a job who would then be recruited for their experience and knowledge so that they can do that job for the government. That’s when this system will change
I think people who appear for CSE have made their peace with the cut-throat competition, and nothing else cause much problem to them than the way CSAT is evolving every year making it the biggest concern. 2023 exam was enough to say that IIT students definitely have an edge over non-technical background students at the very first stage..
Let's be clear, we all know why so many people run after Govt jobs despite the "low" on paper "pay". Please don't give us FALSE hopes. Judiciary and UPSC are IMPOSSIBLE to be reformed in India irrespective of who becomes the PM. In fact, any attempt against the BABUS and the PM will lose his/her chair.
I encourage Modiji to become Mahishasura with the babudom. We need a real dictatorship with the bureaucracy. Whip the babudom into compliance with State and Janata.
Sir,
Just a point. NCC C certificate no longer gives any advantage in the selection of officers in the Defense services
You do get direct ssb option. That is a big advantage
There should be multiple exams held around the year and create a league like leaderboard.
The problem with our country is we have fixed timelines for success (Definition of success itself is difficult on top of it we fix timelines), if an individual is said to have wasted 4-5 years of his/ her time for an exam then becoming an entrepreneur/ researcher requires more patience and additional heavy monetary burden more than UPSC. Chances of becoming a officer in UPSC where exams are conducted regularly and we have decent idea of syllabus and support makes it more appealing than taking a risky route of entrepreneurship and research. Only if we change our mindset about taking risk we can bring change, but in a majority middle class society it is very difficult but hopefully it will change as we slowly become developed country.

The solution on the engineering side is quite good. One series of exams for IITs, and whoever makes the JEE advanced gets into an IIT. If you do not make the JEE advanced, you did clear the JEE mains and you then get an NIT. You are not left empty handed at the end of the hard work. This is a more just system...

Government is lucky to have these exams that turns humans into zombies after 10 years of preparation. If these folks end up searching for a job, the unemployment rates would have been much higher!
Also, IAS for administration of government at district level totally not needed. It only make central government control of state government and prevents creativity. It's ok for all central government administration to have these officers, but IAS should not be at state district working level. States should have agencies with civil sevents recruited by the agency and rise up the ladder with experience and studies within the agencies. That will make them better administrators and also give states more power than appointing a guy spent studying history for 10 years for an exam and all of a sudden appointed to do the central government administration at state district level and approving land related works etc..

In a situation where most kids when surveyed in school said they wanted to be a "UA-camr"... And here the biggest concern seems to be middle class people trying to chase their dreams; maybe, just maybe we've got our priorities misaligned.
We can't really control social values, much less this structure of bureaucratic state when the responsibility of getting anything done rests in the end on these people. No wonder bright people even with high paying salaries in ivory towers wanna become IAS officers & be the one to be able to affect real social changes.
Though, I agree the present system has created a sad and miserable rabbit hole with a lot of talented people sinking a lot of years, falling into depression and being unproductive.
Such discourses are indeed important; especially with Coaching Mafias selling a borderline delusional dream to poor or naive people from rural backgrounds.
Ehh, fine, it's a fair point. Maybe it's hard for me to listen criticism leveled against the precise dream I'm chasing; especially when I am aware of the following the ground realities:
1. The dream definitely ain't as rosy as literally all the coaching institutes and most lay people think. (My parents are in services so I know better than putting these services on a pedestal.)
2. It's unpredictable, unforgiving and a woefully violent reality masquerading as a dream.
3. It's getting progressively harder with increased access, increased aspirations and blasphemous marketing by coaching institutes; as the jobs are getting less lucrative with increased compartmentalisation and reduced discretion.
4. If this stufd doesn't pan out; I'll be left with a life sized hole in my early twenties and a death sized trauma to carry for the rest of my disappointed existence.
Even the odds of these officers being 'honest' is below 0.78 and they come to this job for the immense power which no private sector executives can imagine..... Ias officer has problem with lateral entries and after retirement they themselves get lateral entry to some powerful board rooms, they become experts of topics they would have barely handled 6 months as secretaries and without having any knowledge of actual ground reality..... So reforms are needed for services itself before other things
biggest problem is that there are no better options available
Lakhs Of Quality Job's Are Less In India Especially If You Don't Have Good Professional Degree. 😕
India has too much bureaucracy without accountability as long as they serve their masters well they remain in power
Most of them spend time thinking they will compensate after getting job
There should be max 2/3 chances irrespective of cast religion
If they are paid so low, what attracts so many people to this job then? What are the incentives? My eyes have tears on seeing so many people with burning desire to 'serve the country'.
And my arse bleeds for such hypocrites
Also, the people who already have qualified and keep giving attempts for going to the service of their choice also need to be taken into account.
Unnecessary lengthy CTC for a small subject. First time SG keeps in repeating same things most of the time.
Some wise man has said the number of man hours, efforts and expenses which are being spent by our young men, is a clear waste at the end of the day. It ultimately gives career and pleasure to a hand few but creates disillusionment and frustration in so many. So the immediate step should be to restrict the number of chances to ONE. I am in total agreement with this suggestion.
