  • ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
    This Rokon MotorTractor "War Pony" was completely rebuilt 1995 ROKON Ranger with a New Honda CX-200... The MotorTractor is set up for carrying lots of prospecting gear. This Trip was a full shake down run with all the gear. It was 88 degrees F and a beautiful day! We took it on an extremely steep & rocky trail ~ "If it was going to break down...this trail would be the one to do it...." We, ran it from sun up to sun down and not one issue ~ It passed with flying colors!!!!
    Location: In the heart of the Sierra County Mining District in Northern California. Red Ant Trail is a steep and old Mining Mule Trail...
    Please Note : a little fog in the lens at the end of the video.

    Just recently they made the Rokon Ranger for a Urban Setting…
    Where it will/could be ridden on cement/ash fault-where tire friction would be problematic
    Instead of taking the chain off the front wheel why don’t they put a lockout in the front miter box
    The slip clutch is fine it accomplishes safety but I think it needs a lockout for the urban setting that’s my take I wish I could get some feedback

      On the Really steep parts…. 1st Gear… (rock crawler gear) The not as steep parts I use 2nd Gear and then the normal road I always use 3rd Gear max is around 30 mph.

      Yes, that’s why I got it... to go on Goat and old Oxen Trails ~ The Red Ant 🐜 Trail was just a dry run to test the new Engine...
      Yes in deed ~ The Rokon is more like driving a D-4 Catapiller than it is a dirt-bike or trailbike. In LowRange It goes over 24 inch Logs..without too much trouble at all...
      But, You can hurt yourself on this in low range too > That is a lot of torque that if your pant leg happens to get caught on a branch in low range!!!! That Rokon keeps on going !!!! and you don’t !!!! you will quickly dismount!!!! or you could seriously injure yourself !!! To avoid that happening.... I wear good lace up high top boots with snake gators... sharp sticks and thorns bounce off and don’ dig in!!!!!! That really helps a lot to avoid that when going through the brush!!! I have been yanked off twice!!!! I also always pack a come-along and two 20 foot tow straps... and satellite phone! To always ... be prepared for everything !

      In California I see kids race past me everyday on motorized skateboards with no lights Mirrors and they are legal to drive in this state... But the Rokon with All of it's High and low beam headlights and brake lights and turn signals . disk brakes .top speed of 35 MPH.. A very safe vehicle is still but not legal to drive on the streets of California. ~ Go Figure??? Yes, in deed those aren't gun racks they're metal detector Racks!!!! :)

    I have a question. When it comes time to come back down this trail does one have to use the brakes a lot as the centrifugal clutch would be disengaged .

    • @gerardange
      @gerardange  4 роки тому +1

      Great point!!! Yes if engine is running the cutch is engaged... and you can use the drive train gears to slow you down... % depending on which gear you are using.... If the engin quits the clutch disengages and it is free rolling!!! The Good new is....
      Rokon disk brakes work very well!
      I can say that because I had that experience with the first engine in the Rokon the engine was old & tired and was having an idling problems and it died going down a steep hill and all I had was the disk brakes to slow me down and luckily those worked great!
      So it is all good!!!
      Great Question!

      Bonjour Lancelot1953, Sorry I didn't film it. But honestly there wasn't much of an issue upgrading from the GX180 to the GX200. it bolds right in, I made some changes to the Muffler so it is much quieter now. and changes to Electrical system and Lighting system. > I did take still-photos... I can send you those photos directly ~ if that would help you. But, an email address to send them too

    i believe that in a lot of states if not most they are considered a mototractor or tractor ( i may be wrong) but if so the only thing you would need for operating would be a slow moving sign on the back. insterstate travel would of course be illegal. Hey let me know if I am right or wrong as far as classification.

    • @gerardange
      @gerardange  7 років тому +2

      John,
      I think you are correct with the MotorTractor classification.~ I have heard that before> I also was thinking that same angle you are thinking of ~ I already have a "Slow Moving Vehicle" Placard (triangle) mounted on the rear.. I did some reading up on "Farm vehicles" But found: legally a "Farm Vehicle" can only drive across a public thoroughfare at a "90 degree angle" ~ (Like going from one field to another) but, A farm Vehicle cannot legally drive down a public roadway... Yet, I see Farm Tractors driving down the road all the time around here with no problems with police... I think the main reason is that Farm vehicles use "Red Gas" i.e. (Non Road Taxed Gas) so that is why those laws restrict there use on public roads.
      Most people who look at a Rokon the first thing they think... it's a ATV? and it's not ! Honestly Logically speaking... if an ATV, MotorTractor, Home Made Vehicle, etc... If that vehicle has all the Lights, turn signals horn etc.. meeting all required safety standards. What would be the problem with getting a License Plate? It is not like you would be commuting with it... It is a slow 25-35 MPH vehicle. That is just common sense to drive 1/2 mile on a back road to get to the trail or forest service road you are trying to get to ~ without having to trailer your Rokon there and back again Is very logical...
      But today motorized skateboards, motorized Bicycles & MotoPeds all seem to drive around within the law. All being (less than 49cc) and most of those don't even have lights or plates.) The Rokon maybe could fit into that less than 49cc category??? and I don't use red gas non-taxed gas ! ~ But, what we are talking about here is Government & DMV twisted logic ~ We are just spinning our wheels even thinking about it ~ need I say more?
      Thanks for the email.
      Gerard

    When I bought mine in 2016, it had an expired Oregon plate and registration to go with it, and no lights or mirrors or anything. The guy just registered it like a motorcycle. I changed the title at DMV but I did not try to license it just because I didn't feel like the extra expens of insurance and such. Maybe one day I will try but I'm sure the rules are different now then they were back in 2011.

    do you know if there is a difference between the the front gear ratio and the back or is it the same.
    thanks.

    • @gerardange
      @gerardange  7 років тому +1

      Good question 468delray: I really don't know the answer to that... I think you will have to call Rokon on that one... 1(800) 593-2369 >
      All I know is that the Driveshaft Override spring is a slip connection between the front and rear wheels and that "slip spring" compensates for any offset in that front & rear ratio. That it is very important that you put a few drops of SAE 90W in the lube ports on the top of the frame (under the gas tank) every six months as part of normal maintenance. The gearing ratios is another issue ~
      If you find out the answer.... Please post it here so we all will know.!
      Thanks for your comment!

      The front and rear ratios HAVE to be the same,otherwise the tires wouldn't turn at the same speed.

    • @bigjay6743
      @bigjay6743 4 роки тому

      Exactly if it was different the front and back would fight each other and it would bunny hop just like a 4 by 4 truck with smaller front tires than back tires does the same thing.

      I am not an Engineer but believe the gearing is the very same from the front 🛞 to the back 🛞
      When you go around a corner the front 🛞 makes a bigger circle than the back 🛞 So if both wheels are Geared the same speed-your back wheel will try to push to the front wheel out of the way (because its taking the shortest route) it’s not just a sensation you’re losing traction-without the SlipCluch The SlipClutch works miracles-that’s my take & it may be quite dangerous at 35 mph without it I’d like to think I’m right on this & I wished I could talk Tom Blais (CEO/President of RoKon) into a LockOut-in the front MiterBox For the UrbanSetting because I believe no two tires are the same size even though there may only be 150 on the front tire it constantly hast to make up the difference unless its going around the corner Where the SlipClutch takes over
      I hope you get something out of this Have a good ride-if you have one
      I am looking at the range of myself & if you put a Rock’N Reverse in it The 🐽’S💭…they could Wollow-in the mud Then you’d have yourself-a real Mule 😝

      Hi Joe,
      For a brand new Rokon.. Try>.www.rokon.com/bikes-and-gear
      For a Used one... I added a search on Craigslist.org and got a lot of hits... Some were good solid Rokon's clean & well taken care of and others were beat up and some with oddball motors... I was looking for a specific Model and eventually I found the one I was looking for and cleaned it up and put an updated electrical system and new motor. I am really happy with the results!!! What ever you are looking either Brand New or older classic models they all relatively similar in design...The older one's were 2 cycle Chrysler and the newer one are 4 cycle with a Kohler 208cc 7hp and one year 1995 they had a Honda Motor ~ which was the one I was looking for.... It all depends in what you are looking for.
      Also..... it is not really like riding a motorcycle ~ With Two Wheel Drive you don't lean into the corners.... To me It is more like steering a D-4 Cat.... you point it where you want it to go. I love riding it!
      Another Rokon Site> manyringding.tripod.com/index.html
      Very best of luck finding yours!

    Why didn't you buy a 4x4 Quad.
    They both cost the same!
    Much more comfortable and quiet ride!

    • @gerardange
      @gerardange  5 років тому +2

      Overall, Both Quads and Rokons are very useful tools in the areas where they designed to do their best..
      As to comparison of the capabilities?
      A Rokon will go far, far, beyond where any Quad will ever go.... Quads are too wide for many areas and also a Quad can flip-over traversing across steep hillsides ( that is very dangerous !!!) .... A Rokon will ride through a very narrow trails and in very tight places a quad would never fit!!! and a Rokon can make it’s own Trail if needed!!! A Rokon can drive over two foot high logs with not too much difficulty and most importantly.... a Rokon can traverse across steep hillsides and remain upright! A quad can’t do that.
      So those are the main reasons people buy a Rokon. The only thing that will go farther than a Rokon is... a Good Mule!!!
      Gérard

    • @chadford8500

      Quads are more dangerous than 2 wheel dirtbikes. It has been studied and proven that people get more seriously injured on quads than dirtbikes due to the fact that quads tend to land on the rider in an accident and dirtbikes don't usually and weigh less than a quad.
      Either way, if you have a bad accident in the backwoods on a quad or a dirtbike that breaks bones, you are still gonna be in a world of hurt if your by yourself.
