    I’ve been doing pushups, pull ups and chin ups every day since high school. Now at age 67 and on a Ketovore diet, I can do more of each than when I was a teenager. Every morning before breakfast and evening before bed, I do 200 pushups (ten sets of 20 with 30s rest between sets) and 100 pull ups or chin ups (10 sets of 10 with 30s rest between sets).
    So 400 pushups and 200 pull ups or chin ups per day - and I’m in the best shape of my life. Eating mostly meat these days and the lack of joint pain I use to have before Ketovore is what I truly believe has made this possible.

    The study has some flaws. The push up capacity is strongly correlated with age. Younger firefighters could do more push ups. Younger firefighters had fewer heart attacks. They really needed more participants and control for age. That said, I (emotionally) agree with the findings. I just think it is not very good science

    • @erikh8685
      @erikh8685 2 місяці тому +19

      Completely agree. If this isn't adjusted for age then what this is really testing is that 35 year olds (age group for >41 push ups) have less heart attacks than 48 year olds! Of course a 13 year age difference is going to increase your risk of heart attack.
      This is pretty werid that High Intensity Health didn't choose to acknowledge this.

    • @GerbenWulff
      @GerbenWulff 2 місяці тому +5

      The study says what it says: the more push-ups, the lower the risk. They deliberately measured a number of risk factors. Some risk factors you can change by diet and exercise and some you can't (age). People can use this to test their risk and with that knowledge they could consider if they should try to change any of their risk factors by diet and exercise.

    • @erikh8685
      @erikh8685 2 місяці тому

      But that isn't what the study tested. Age and push ups are confounded. People cannot alone determine the protective effects of push ups because in this study push ups are correlated with age so you cannot tell if the protective effect is from being young or because they can do more pushups.
      To determine if pushups are actually protective they would need to either control for age which is easy to do in a multivariate screening or cut the data for age and have recommendations based on different age models.@@GerbenWulff

    In 1985, at age 38, during a divorce, I started preparing for the Army Reserve physical fitness test and was going to be a Drill Instructor: Inside thirty days I got up to 70 pushups nonstop in one set (I had previously served 5 1/2 years in the Navy, 1966 - 1972, and was in close quarters combat working with the 9th Infantry and 82nd Airborne during Vietnam. I had been exercising as a runner (3 to 4 miles on a track) for years. Now at 77, I lift weights....at age 58, I weighed 212 lbs, 5'11" and deadlifted 446, squat 365 and 255 bench. Even when only 171 lbs as a runner or 212 lbs as a weight lifter, my hydrostatic fat was 12.5 per cent. I still lift regularly, my wife does so also and is very muscular for a woman at 79 years of age and gets comments from Health professionals about her muscularity. I started training her when she was about 56 years old, but she has very good fast twitch muscles, I believe. She could smoke me in a wind sprint....a simple 25 yard sprint and I would be 5 yards behind.

    I think this study can be applied to just about any multi-joint movement because it speaks to me more about the health and quality of the muscle tissue versus the movement itself because 40 push-ups is relatively easy for most people, if they can build the capacity and the health benefits will be reflected in the muscles, not the actual exercise haha I mean imagine doing 40 burpees or 40 squats or 40 Australian Pull Ups

    Based on the Kaplan-Mair curves it looks like the difference between the 20-30, 30-40, and >40 cohorts in survival probability over 10 years was not significant. These 3 cohorts hade >95% survival probability over 10 uears. If a person did 20 or more pushups, they were significantly better than the groups with lower pushups reps.

    Doing 40 unbroken can be tough for me. I've had good days when I can do it, but usually have to pause in the pushup position between rep 35-38 for a 2-3 secs, then finish out. I've done pushup workouts where you pause in the pushup position to rest, or, prop your booty in the air to rest and done over 100,...really challenging for me. I also like to do a workout with pushups and air squats -- 200 reps total for each movement. Start with 50 reps first set for both. Rest a bit, then continue out with 20 reps sets til you finish, with about 10 secs of rest in-between. I'm 59. Today -- I did 40 unbroken no problem.

    I've learned a lot by watching various health channels, including this one. With that in mind, the title of this video is "Push-ups Cut Risk of Heart Attack, Study Finds". However, this study is an *association* and finds that people who can do lots of push-ups quickly have less heart attacks, not doing lots of push-ups reduces your risk of CHD. No doubt that doing lots of push-ups will get you more fit, build more muscle at least in the chest, maybe the back and shoulders, and that's what makes you healthier, not push-ups in and of itself. Point is you can do just about anything and that is going to be better than that nothing most people do. I'm off for my Proteus workout.

    Given the correlation between BMI and max pushups, I think just checking your weight and calculating BMI gives a better indicator for chance of heart attack than # of pushups you can do. Even a 'fat fit' young person will struggle to do a lot of pushups.
    Sure getting fitter and being able to do more pushups will boost VO2max and improve health and reduce chance of heart attack, BUT losing that excess fat is probably a better immediate goal (but there is nothing to stop you doing more exercise and getting fitter while you are losing body fat).

    Great study and informative presentation. Of course, all of these biomarkers in this study are correlations, not causes. I am wondering what our theory would be about the lives the 40+ pushup group has been living to get them to these biomarkers? Do the people who do 40+ generally do more strength-training? Do they eat more red meat or spinach? I can take a guess and follow a plan, but science would be better. A follow-up study with each of the participants might be helpful toward this end.

  • @FrogmortonHotchkiss
    @FrogmortonHotchkiss 2 місяці тому

    This correlation could be a proxy measure for things other than strength, so it may be wrong to take away 'priority number 1 is to increase strength'.
    Bodyweight is a big factor in max number of pushups, fat mass even more so. Those firefighters who could do fewer may have been fatter on average.
    Technique makes a huge difference. I'm a big, heavy guy. I normally perform pushups on my fists with a slow cadence and challenging body mechanics (e.g. hand and foot positions), and I can do maybe five reps this way. My aim is muscular tension & fatigue, not high numbers. But when I occasionally get a notion to go for numbers and practice it over a few workouts, I can quickly get over 30 reps (still touching chest to ground) at the same bodyweight. My point here is that it's a hard exercise to standardise.
    Lastly, the healthier firefighters will have been more likely to exercise in a way that maintained their pushup strength. That health may, itself, have been the important longevity factor, prior to the engagement in strength training.
