I started getting into guns around 2013. At that time, Tactical Response was one of the few training companies putting content on social media. At the time I was living in Japan where even real martial arts training is covered up like a dirty secret. Even if we don’t agree w their techniques, culture, or style, you have to respect TR for taking firearms training out of that elitist "LE/MIL only" stereotype and making it for the people and out in the culture using social media (UA-cam). RIP James, you built a great business, helped a lot of people, and helped further normalize firearms use and training in American culture.
i miss James Yeager. I remember all the fudds came after him for his "pack your bags" video. Man, the community has changed so much - for the better - since 2012-2013. Way less fudds, MUCH less tolerance for fuddery, too.
Yeagers techniques were designed to work 100 percent of the time and so that literally anyone with no firearm experience could learn to operate their weapon by keeping things a simple as possible.
I can see these techniques to train an automobile driver who was raised with wolves on mars and never saw a car in their lives until they were in their adult years. Using them to "train" an adult who has been driving and riding in cars since an early age is just as ridiculous as using these techniques to train an adult who was raised around firearms.

I believe it was the late great Paul Gomez who developed this reloading concept for Tactical Response. His UA-cam page is still up and full of classic gems.
Beliefs: 1. Law Enforcement shooting/technique has an oversized influence upon operations for self defense carry. 2. Same for Military. 3. Same for Competition Shooting. LEO mission = end the threat Military = destroy the enemy Competition = shoot accurately as fast as possible. Mission of self defender? = initiate a break in contact - that's it. AKA "Get off me!" Most self defenders aren't super duper gun enthusiasts. Data is hard to come by, yet it seems to suggest that most civilian involved shootings/defense encounters are 6 rounds or less situations. Most full/compact carry guns have 15+ rounds. 90+% of these encounters will never require a reload. Reloading in a panic, under an adrenaline rush is frought with potential for failure. I like Clint Smith's advice, 1 is none, 2 is one etc... NY reload is the best reload! (Because statistically, you won't have to reload). Buy a gun you can afford and shoot (learn to shoot) well. Then buy 2 more, carry them. Done. Be Practical not Tacticool...
I train to run the slide. A dead mans gun with 1 more round is still a dead mans gun. James once invited me to a class for free because i posted a video of myself doing a shotgun reload. He challenged me after i made a questioning comment, then said i would die if i did that in a fight, but had the balls to post it, so come take a class. I wasnt able to make the trip unfortunately, but thats my JY story.

Alumn here. RIP James. I miss you brother. So awesome to see his creation TR continuing. On reloads I completely agree with everything you said. As far as I’m concerned, it’s the gold standard and that’s how I teach my students. On strobes, I see no reason to have one on a weapon light. Having said, that I will not carry or purchase an EDC or common use flashlight without a strobe. I feel it is one of the most important safety features you can have to get people’s attention in an emergency or hazardous situation. One of the most dangerous times in a person’s life is when they’re on or near roadways, especially after an accident , especially at night. Nothing controls traffic like strobe. I also use a strobe extensively while hunting to “ping” other hunters to make sure they know that I’m there and not to shoot me. When I have an animal down, I put a small EDC strobe on my hat and look around periodically to make sure that people see where I am, again so they don’t shoot me. I have used strobe in the past to get police attention when they were looking for my location, after 911 call. Flashlights say: “flashlight” strobe says: “Attention” , Piss off”, “Emergency”, “Danger”, “here I am”.
I took Fighting Pistol in FL and it was great. I recently made the mistake of replying to one of their Facebook posts and it was all a bunch of “experts” who’ve never done any training and fudds bashing on them and me. James always taught what works the best for all people all the time. Simplicity is the best design (DaVinci, kinda).
As an alumni myself my advice to people is usually to go to tac response for mindset and tactics based classes, and go seek other instruction for skills based classes. All of the training ive gotten there has been awesome and ive appreciated the instruction.
Been watching a fair number of police shooting vids. Surprising number of malfunctions and even more surprising, the difficulty with which they are cleared. Haven’t been able to see a pattern myself but have noticed a lot of fumbing attempts to clear.
@@jurban7998That's so damn true.... Like you said, you wouldn't believe the amount of customers we get that didn't even know magazines were supposed to be cleaned and well maintained. The other shocking bit is the amount of people that think cleaning a rifle / pistol means using WD40 or brake cleaner to spray the firearm down with and calling it a day... P.S. - This is a bit off topic but there also seems to be this misconception surrounding proper lubrication and how much to apply. Too many people think glocks are supposed to run dry or to use very little lube on both their glocks & DI rifles.... Over the past 20 years customers have brought in almost bone dry firearms with issues than sopping wet firearms with issues. I've found with the vast majority of both striker fired pistols and DI guns it's damn near impossible to run them "too wet". I honestly don't know where this myth truly started honestly but I still see it to this day.
- My trouble with a strobe is when all the functions are on the same button. I don't want to click through the options to find my strobe, or set off the strobe incidentally. If one wants to use a strobe it's a very specific occasion, so it should have its own button.
Most people draw and stay stationary to shoot at a target 7 yards away and then work the reload as fast as possible cause the t rex twink does it fast. They dont even practice shooing while moving to cover. 9 times out of ten, they are gonna get smoked before that reload ever happens cause they font understand the concept of becoming a smaller target while making their enemy put his head down.
Usually the slide goes forward before the mag is seated is because the users thumb is on the slide stop so they can speed their reloads up. When the mag starts into the magwell, the downward pressure from the hand holding the gun prematurely presses the slide stop. I see it at-least once a match from a shooter. This not only shows the tactical response way is more consistent but also shows how detrimental the slide stop technique can be.
Nah, I've had this happen without having my hand anywhere near the slide stop. In my experience it really comes down to how the pistol/slide stop is designed. For example, the Gen 5 Glocks really don't have that issue but my Canik Rival does it very consistently. I don't use the thumb on my firing hand to hit the slide release, I use the thumb on my support hand as I'm rebuilding my grip to drop the slide similar to hitting the bolt release on an AR15 after you slide a mag in on your way back into your grip. Certain pistols are designed to prevent the slide from dropping by inserting a mag but many manufacturers still have not addressed the issue. Gen 5 Glocks and the S&W M&P 2.0 are designed to reduce the frequency of that occurrence. I don't know if any other companies are trying to prevent it but I know those two are.
I use support hand only to hit slide stop, keeping primary hand thumb well clear. I do see people sending slide home too early with a primary hand slide release reload though.
I love strobes on my pocket light even as a civilian. I stopped a crackhead approaching me, my wife, and my friend group after a small bar trip with it. Dude came up yelling and cursing while walking his bike right at us. Good times. The wife always wondered why i carried a flashlight, even with cell phones or my WML. That's why. Lol
1 thing I would like is for flashlights to have the strobe on a seprate button not where you need to cycle through bright low dim strobe fast strobe slow off
I can vouch for the disorienting effect of strobes. I have had 3-4 “episodes” caused by strobes. A haunted house and a couple of live bands. I don’t have epilepsy, or any other neuro condition but an intense strobe can sometimes have a hypnotic effect on me. It resolves quickly but I’m pretty out of sorts for 10-15 sec. I don’t use them for that reason.
@@armorers_wrench When I’ve mentioned it, I have had other people tell me they “tripped out” from a strobe. I spent 39 years in a strict medical surveillance program. Never had an issue on any test.
My HK45c and USPc both send the slide home on a mag insertion about 3/4 of the time. As cool as it makes me look when it happens, I can't count on it 100%, so I plan on having to release the slide manually. The end result is a jerky reload when am already moving my support hand to the slide and observe the slide already closed, so my hand jams on the brakes and moves back to support my grip. Ultimately it takes more brain power and observation of the specific condition of the gun rather than the 1-process approach.
I agree on almost every point. First, If your slide drops when forcefully inserting a mag, that is a malfunction and a defect. I also mostly agree about the strobe issue. I do not want strobe on a mounted light. One aspect I don't necessarily disagree with, but rather, have additional input, that you kinda addressed with the phrase "out and about". Regardless of either party being intoxicated, when on home turf the handheld strobe is very useful imho. The disorientation effect against either an intoxicated or sober individual in an unfamiliar, confined setting is for sure. At home, a home you could navigate with closed eyes, it is the same or potentially better than a best case scenario for a strobe on the streets. If you know every angle, corner and space, the defense of the home is greatly improved by a handheld strobe, even against a sober person. I would add this caveat: I use a surefire Z2-S. It takes a triple press to activate strobe. The light can never be in strobe mode unintentionally.
Running the slife also creates muscle memory more than anything. Which aids with a list of things. Like fixing malfunctions. Ops can't shoot and just do mag dumps in any one direction. Get a trl7 and program the strobe out.

Controversial, John at ASP maintains in all the civilian defense videos he has watched, (10,000ish)reloads are not a thing. He only recently saw one and those pistols were not loaded to capacity. I still carry a reload and practice that skill but it’s nowhere near the top of my concern list.
I kind of like olight's take on them. You either have a triple press setting where it takes a deliberate action or the dual high/strobe setting where it's gas pedal style. Strobe lights are used by police fire and EMS because they attract attention. I don't think having the ability to strobe is bad, I just dislike when it's random or unexpected.
Bringing the pistol into your working area so that your eye is on the threat while dropping the magazine and inserting one by feel with your finger on the bullet tip, even in complete darkness is a FLEO skill engrained from Academy to every 3 month qualification course. It is just a skill copy paste from there to people running training courses. It isn’t controversial. Practicing tap/rack/re-asses gets people wrapped around the axle as it isn’t really taught outside the wheelhouse.
That was the first video I saw from James. After we became friends I told him that my first reaction to watching it was " what an asshole, calling me an amateur" and then I swallowed my pride and admitted to myself that he was right, I was am amateur and that needed to change. I may still be an amateur but I'm much farter down the path than I was before I met James and everyone else at Tactical response.
As far as all of the points behind the manual racking of the slide no matter what, each of these points can be argued against buy 1) buying good, reliable equipment and 2) training to be competent with it. Shoving the mag in and immediately hitting the slide release, not only has it never caused any flavor of failure to feed, not caused me to waste a round ejecting it for no reason, but is also way faster.
The only input I have for tac lights is that the common tactical light should remain the same. The strobe offers the more lightly or not armed individual a means of disorientation of the attacker, who does not know it is coming versus the person that activated it. Who obviously is prepared for it. I don't think it's a good idea for a weapon light unless you have dual button activation whereby one button is stream of light and the other is strobe and with a single press of either opposing button can hot swap between functions. Turn on button 1, stream, hit button two, strobe, return to button one and it returns to stream and one more is off. Simple single press solutions for speed on weapon lights but tac lights should remain the same so unarmed people have some options for drunk or otherwise beligerent people other than getting a whistle or horn of some type. It has a function for non police work. That said the weapon light should be kept dead simple for the operator. They have enough on their plate and don't need to be focused on how many button presses for the function they want. Rather than changing the tac light I think the weight should be put on using a dedicated weapon light without the strobe function.
If the flashlight includes a strobe function, please give me a slide selector for the mode (strobe, low, high typically) and a separate power switch, rather than a button that I have to click through the stobe to get from off to the setting I want.
Watched a short a few months ago from Overton Windex. In it he does a reload then works the slide and you can see a round getting ejected. I can't remember if it was in the video or the comments but he said he would work the slide anyway to make sure a round had been chambered. I think using that logic you may as well cycle the entire magazine by hand because; well, you never know. At some point you have to trust that your firearm has fulfilled its part of the bargain. That's why we have "immediate action" drills.
I took fighting pistol in April 2022, the only thing different now about the reload is Joey and Tim encourage people to strip the old magazine because too many people stand there shaking the pistol like they are Michael J Fox.
like you said the odds of needing to reload are pretty slim But if i did need to i would like to avoid racking the gun in a high stress situation. Ive seen enough videos of people racking the slide and inducing a malfunction. mostly folks carrying without a round chambered but it still applies. lots to go wrong if you grab the slide in a bad spot like the ejection port or short cycle the slide. seen it a bunch in competitions too and thats no where near as stressful as selfdefense.
Okay, I have several thinks to say. First, I want to talk about James Yeager. I feel blessed that I was able to take the Fighting Pistol Course with James before he passed. It was great training, and I made a UA-cam video about it. I was extremely sad when James told us in a video that he had ALS. I really miss him and wish I could have taken more training with him. I really liked James. There was an incredible honesty about him that very few people can claim. What you saw is what you got. If he liked you, you knew it. He could like you even if he thought you were full of sh**, as long as he believed you were honest and he could trust you. He was a really [good] man. I am sad sitting here writing about him. I really miss him. Before I go any further, I want to comment about cops. As someone who spent 45 years in law enforcement, there is a real misconception in the civilian world about cops and guns. Civilians [assume] that because cops carry guns, that they are all gun guys & gals, and that they all know how to use them. There is nothing that could be further from the truth. While there is probably a higher percentage of cops that are into guns than in the civilian community, it has been my experience that less than a quarter of those behind the badge are actually into guns, which means their actual experience and training is probably at the bare minimum, and only what is needed for them to qualify to carry their duty weapon. Okay, now that I have gotten that out of my system, let’s talk about the issues of the video. I completely understand why James trained us to let that chambered round fly. If you are in a combat situation letting that round fly does two things. A. It ensures there is a round in the chamber and you are ready to re-engage. B. It ensures that the magazine works and is ready to go. Those are a couple of reasons it was called, “The Combat Pistol Course.” Now let’s talk about the strobe function on a light. I 100% disagree with a strobe function on a weapons light. If I am using a light on a weapon, it is to positively identify the target or to actually see what I am pointing my gun at. Now with a handheld light I want the strobe function. Having the capability of strobe on a handheld light is just another less lethal weapon. All I have to do to ensure the strobe doesn’t get me, is close my eyes, but before the subject can recover I can subdue and cuff him, or shoot him, which ever is necessary. Strobe function in a handheld is just another less lethal weapon.
One minor adjustment on the reload procedure. You don't drop the mag from the pistol until you have the new mag in your work zone. This minimizes the amount of time the gun is unloaded.
Almost four years of combat here As an infantryman and later as a scout. James Jaeger's tactics work in the real world. And strobes are insanely important. A lot of these tactical trainers teach a lot of theatrics just to sell something different. Also, people don't seem to realize that police tactics will not work in a military setting and vice versa.
I've never deployed the strobe function of a light. That said, in my mine if it's something you've trained with and can rapidly use, it seems like a 'better to have and not need' scanerio. Strobe doesn't add a material amount of weight to the light. Doesn't cost much extra. And does provide a stop gap between a harsh word and high velocity lead perforation. Maybe there are better options, but sometimes *something* is better than nothing.
For those who get wound up over the idea that one round was lost in the reload sequence, go get it and do with it whatever you like. You don't need any validation, just go and pick it up. Or you can even skip the slide manipulation. You have the rest of your life to " validate " the concept.
Statistically speaking, reloads don't matter in civilian or LE encounters. Look at the data the Active Self Protection has on over 40K gunfights they have analyzed. This is just going down the rabbit hole to argue for argument's sake.
Streamlights 10 tap programming is a nice option. On my rifles, they are high only. My EDC light goes high first but a double tap goes strobe. Tripple tap goes low, which is needed often as high is too much for looking under a seat or at something up close. When i had a streamlight on my NV helmet, i had it set to go low before high and had a red filter on it. low with red gave me additional depth perception for climbing a treestand and similar things without blowing out my unaided eye. Now I use a inforce wmlx on my helmet. Having ir is nice but I wish it had a low option or a red flipable filter. Ill probably get one of them little white/red admin lights eventually to compliment the other light.
As someone else mentioned, and I can confirm from my own personal relationship with James, he would just give his little giggle if he could hear people still being butthurt about saying he said that he verified it worked and was well-thought out. Also, talk about a guy who constantly would help people in need or even just discounting training to get people more knowledge than they had before. RIP James.
Something that is also not discussed that reloads in civilian gunfights and extremely rare. John Coriea said of over 10k videos analyzed he's seen lesr than 5 civilian reloads.
I've seen plenty of youtubers drop the bolt/slide on an empty chamber and have to charge the weapon anyway. I fist pump every time I see it. One thing you got backwards is that they teach to bring a loaded mag up before dropping the old one.
When I went through Fighting Pistol last(2022) it was ideal that as the empty mag was falling, the new mag should pass the empty mag on its way up to the magwell before it hit the ground. However, I've noticed in many videos that James would just strip the mag out regardless of firearm and insert a frash mag(or one with bullets in it). Strip, insert, run the slide/charging handle and get back into the fight.
I never really considered the whole point of cycling the slide after dropping it on a full magazine, and I'm still not sure I agree. Not all guns do it by accident, the HK P7 series had it as an intentional feature and I've never known it to fail on mine. But I do agree that the loss of a single round isn't a big deal in a large capacity weapon. But when all you've got is 7, then it's a bit more of an issue. I completely agree about strobes on weapon lights, it's unnecessary and can easily disorient the person using it if they get bounce back and aren't ready for it. And it annoys the hell out of me.
I play airsoft. I have both used, and been on the receiving end of strobes. It is disorienting and hard to accurately target the user, the user can still properly illuminate the threat (using strobe or normal modes). Even when the strobing light is reflected back, it is more useful than not, and if it is a burden, it is EASY to switch modes.
I have zero use for a strobe. I will not buy any light with a strobe function unless it can be turned off in such a way that I never accidentally actuate it.
It all always comes down to training. If, you train at a high level. It won't matter if you train the slide release method or the rack the slide method. If you know your weapon system and do a proper reload than it doesnt matter how you do it.
Interesting you mentioned Powertac as an example - they already offer similar products with different features. A while back I picked up a G4 and G5 models on a sale. The one model had a power button that could be replaced with a pressure switch for weapon mounting and a mode button (that included strobe). The other had one putting for both power and switching modes, and was more difficult to go to strobe mode. Its end was magnetic instead of power button/removable for a weapon mount pressure switch. That was 3-4 years ago so not sure what their current model line looks like.
Funny enough, i used to be abig fan of the slide release..... and i still am for initial chambering or dripping the slide in a contrilled environment when theres time That said, i started dry fire holster manipulation, and using the rack every time i reloaded or drilled a malfunction. I just started minor matches, and the rack method came natural when i had 2 malfunctions..... my hands did it before i even thought about it. Cleared the malfunction, back to running. Hard to argue with results.....and now im trying to train that exclusively. The moral is, train the mechanics even if you cant shoot, try it if you dint believe it works!
My EDC light has just about the best hidden strobe mode that I've found, ut only strones if the activation button is full pressed and held for a half second and then will continue to strobe until activated (either by half or full press) again. I looked very specifically for a light that had the option for a strobe, but had it concealed in a way that i both would never accidentally stumble into it, but also could reliably activate under stress. Under stress one's usual reaction is to "death grip" whatever is in your hand so holding the button for half a second gives me quick and reliable acces if i should ever need it, while also "hiding" it during normal use. Fenix PD32V2 is the light i carry and have beat the absolute hell out of and trust it every single day. I need to buy a spare kust to keep in my truck. Its got decent candela, decent "administrative" mode for not blinding myself while looking for dropped car keys, and a nice middle mode that offers both acceptable light level for "most" use cases while having plenty of battery life at nearly 5hrs on a fresh battery with little heat generation
Well the nice thing about Streamlights is you have to tell the light from out of the box that you want the strobe function. Activating the strobe functionality is all but impossible to do accidentally. And you can deactivate the functionality whenever you want. I’ve been in a few high stress situations involving firearms and almost every time someone (including myself) will have their strobe going (intentionally or otherwise). I’ve never found it to be a detriment unless it’s actually being used against you. As to its efficacy against a bad guy, I can’t really say. But I’m sure it’s super disorienting to have a strobe in your face while someone is yelling at you.
Absolutely agree with deleting the strobe on weapon mounted lights on a regular light though whether your law enforcement or civilian if it serves a purpose for one it serves a purpose for both.
I agree with you on strobe lights for a handheld light in your pocket or on your belt at the bar/club. It can come in handy. For a weapon mounted light I’d say the strobe effect is pointless and could even prove counterproductive and detrimental to the person carrying the weapon. Only my opinion of course😺
Interesting point about racking the slide after a tactical reload which in all my years of Law Enforcement Training and experience and outside class training I never learned unless there was a malfunction.
Hick's law says the more choices you have the longer it takes to make a decision. For me it's just easier to learn one way and stick with it. Maybe that only saves my a fraction of a second but that might make the difference.
There is a difference between emergency/empty and top-off/admin reloads. If you carry and you're not training to win in a gunfight, you're not training effectively (that includes what and how you carry stuff). The argument that reloads don't happen in civilian real life is a crappy one. Those stats won't matter to the 1 person out of 1,000,000 that will actually need to reload during a gunfight and gets smoked because they didn't practice a basic skill that's easy to practice without firing a single round.
i wish i could delete my "strobe function" on all my lights...... like you said, it can have its uses..... but the amount of times i, or most people will use it, dosnt justify all the countless times we have to deal with it when we just need a flashlight
James' video "All guns should be glocks" and his alliteration that the ideal carry gun is a 15rd 4" barrel 9mm stuck with me from years ago. I tried all types of handguns but came back to a Glock 19 for edc. Hate to admit it but he was right.
@@cagneybillingsley2165 Just to be fair, he also said in that video that by "Glocks" he meant polymer framed, striker-fired, 9mm pistols. He even referenced the M&P's as an example of what he meant.
I dislike strobe . While I think it could be useful , it is also at the user's risk . 16 yrs ago my then 28yr old wife developed seizures. Then it was described to us that 1 in 4 adults can have seizures for a list of unknown reasons . Lights flickering is a huge contributing factor in most epileptic people.
I have taken many training courses and in every one there was something that was taught that I did not see as useful in my life and how I use my tools. When that happens do the thing the way it’s taught don’t argue, if you have useful insight offer it but do the training. I do not really like the stripe function, mostly due to accidental activation by users…..I have taught low light shooting and it is illuminate, ID, shoot if necessary, light out and move and almost without exception the shooters will activate the strobe when the light should be out…..the function has its place for sure I just wish it was a different button on the light

I shoot a lot and have never had a slide fall home without me intending to do so with the slide release or reaching over and charging. I do own primarily glocks so maybe that’s why
Not every hamfisted fud is carring a 15+ shot full size for EDC. Some of us only have 7-8 round magazines so that we have a gun that fires a fullsize cartridge and is actual concealable. Losing 1 round out a 7 shot magazine takes it down to six.
They make these outrageously expensive pocket organizers for spare mags. I edc one from recycled chinesium, jb weld and neo magnets, 10 bucks? Where there's a will there's a way. Either clean the pocket lint or make sure it functions with the pocket lint.
This is an okay video, pretty much common sense with the reloads and strobe lights. I thought it was about Lucas vs PTR drama. I don’t know if you heard about that, but if you are interested you can look it up. Lol
100% agree with the reload sequence regardless of firearm. I have been chastised about running the slide or charging handle instead of the slide stop or "bolt release" purely based on the "its faster and seconds matter" argument. Seconds do matter and I probably ony have one chance at fixing the fuck up so it NEEDS to be right, not fast. I will have the rest of my life to work through the problem. If a tap-rack doesnt fix it, reload it. I have also been chastised, like James' for havinging a loaded pistol in a class (my ccw) before being told to have one. As for the strobe function on lights, I think its stupid but I haven't had formal low light training either.I also am a fellow Alumni and you do need to get your ass down to Camden again.
Good video. I'm old and don't want to be "that guy" but I will. They have this thing now called accuracy and if you utilize it your not going to need to reload. Nothing wrong with reloading the gun just use big enough calibers (not a .380 go bigger.). And won't need to overthink a reload. Yes I tote a .45 acp no its not a 1911 but those fat chunky 230 grain Federal Hydrashoks seem to work.

I started getting into guns around 2013. At that time, Tactical Response was one of the few training companies putting content on social media. At the time I was living in Japan where even real martial arts training is covered up like a dirty secret. Even if we don’t agree w their techniques, culture, or style, you have to respect TR for taking firearms training out of that elitist "LE/MIL only" stereotype and making it for the people and out in the culture using social media (UA-cam). RIP James, you built a great business, helped a lot of people, and helped further normalize firearms use and training in American culture.
i miss James Yeager. I remember all the fudds came after him for his "pack your bags" video. Man, the community has changed so much - for the better - since 2012-2013. Way less fudds, MUCH less tolerance for fuddery, too.

Yeagers techniques were designed to work 100 percent of the time and so that literally anyone with no firearm experience could learn to operate their weapon by keeping things a simple as possible.
I can see these techniques to train an automobile driver who was raised with wolves on mars and never saw a car in their lives until they were in their adult years. Using them to "train" an adult who has been driving and riding in cars since an early age is just as ridiculous as using these techniques to train an adult who was raised around firearms.

I believe it was the late great Paul Gomez who developed this reloading concept for Tactical Response. His UA-cam page is still up and full of classic gems.
Beliefs:
1. Law Enforcement shooting/technique has an oversized influence upon operations for self defense carry. 2. Same for Military.
3. Same for Competition Shooting.
LEO mission = end the threat
Military = destroy the enemy
Competition = shoot accurately as fast as possible.
Mission of self defender? = initiate a break in contact - that's it. AKA "Get off me!"
Most self defenders aren't super duper gun enthusiasts. Data is hard to come by, yet it seems to suggest that most civilian involved shootings/defense encounters are 6 rounds or less situations. Most full/compact carry guns have 15+ rounds. 90+% of these encounters will never require a reload.
Reloading in a panic, under an adrenaline rush is frought with potential for failure. I like Clint Smith's advice, 1 is none, 2 is one etc... NY reload is the best reload! (Because statistically, you won't have to reload).
Buy a gun you can afford and shoot (learn to shoot) well. Then buy 2 more, carry them. Done.

James based most of his training around the G19/17 and the AR platform so it might not translate 1:1 with other platforms.
I train to run the slide. A dead mans gun with 1 more round is still a dead mans gun. James once invited me to a class for free because i posted a video of myself doing a shotgun reload. He challenged me after i made a questioning comment, then said i would die if i did that in a fight, but had the balls to post it, so come take a class. I wasnt able to make the trip unfortunately, but thats my JY story.

On reloads I completely agree with everything you said. As far as I’m concerned, it’s the gold standard and that’s how I teach my students.
On strobes, I see no reason to have one on a weapon light.
Having said, that I will not carry or purchase an EDC or common use flashlight without a strobe. I feel it is one of the most important safety features you can have to get people’s attention in an emergency or hazardous situation.
One of the most dangerous times in a person’s life is when they’re on or near roadways, especially after an accident , especially at night. Nothing controls traffic like strobe.
I also use a strobe extensively while hunting to “ping” other hunters to make sure they know that I’m there and not to shoot me. When I have an animal down, I put a small EDC strobe on my hat and look around periodically to make sure that people see where I am, again so they don’t shoot me. I have used strobe in the past to get police attention when they were looking for my location, after 911 call. Flashlights say: “flashlight” strobe says: “Attention” , Piss off”, “Emergency”, “Danger”, “here I am”.
I took Fighting Pistol in FL and it was great. I recently made the mistake of replying to one of their Facebook posts and it was all a bunch of “experts” who’ve never done any training and fudds bashing on them and me. James always taught what works the best for all people all the time. Simplicity is the best design (DaVinci, kinda).
As an alumni myself my advice to people is usually to go to tac response for mindset and tactics based classes, and go seek other instruction for skills based classes. All of the training ive gotten there has been awesome and ive appreciated the instruction.
I used an angle grinder to cut more a notch in my slide catch notch. Reload sequence stays the same and I never lose a round.
Regular gun maintenance will solve most weapon malfunctions.
Yeah man you’d be suprised (or at least disappointed) by how crusty a lot of “professional” firearm users’ duty weapons are.
Been watching a fair number of police shooting vids. Surprising number of malfunctions and even more surprising, the difficulty with which they are cleared. Haven’t been able to see a pattern myself but have noticed a lot of fumbing attempts to clear.
I'm amazed at how many people stare blankly when I ask how long since the last time they stripped and cleaned their magazines...

The other shocking bit is the amount of people that think cleaning a rifle / pistol means using WD40 or brake cleaner to spray the firearm down with and calling it a day...
P.S. - This is a bit off topic but there also seems to be this misconception surrounding proper lubrication and how much to apply. Too many people think glocks are supposed to run dry or to use very little lube on both their glocks & DI rifles.... Over the past 20 years customers have brought in almost bone dry firearms with issues than sopping wet firearms with issues. I've found with the vast majority of both striker fired pistols and DI guns it's damn near impossible to run them "too wet". I honestly don't know where this myth truly started honestly but I still see it to this day.
- My trouble with a strobe is when all the functions are on the same button. I don't want to click through the options to find my strobe, or set off the strobe incidentally. If one wants to use a strobe it's a very specific occasion, so it should have its own button.

Most people draw and stay stationary to shoot at a target 7 yards away and then work the reload as fast as possible cause the t rex twink does it fast. They dont even practice shooing while moving to cover. 9 times out of ten, they are gonna get smoked before that reload ever happens cause they font understand the concept of becoming a smaller target while making their enemy put his head down.
They absolutely teach and I think is a great point never hit the mag release until you have a magazine in your hand.
Usually the slide goes forward before the mag is seated is because the users thumb is on the slide stop so they can speed their reloads up. When the mag starts into the magwell, the downward pressure from the hand holding the gun prematurely presses the slide stop. I see it at-least once a match from a shooter. This not only shows the tactical response way is more consistent but also shows how detrimental the slide stop technique can be.
Nah, I've had this happen without having my hand anywhere near the slide stop. In my experience it really comes down to how the pistol/slide stop is designed. For example, the Gen 5 Glocks really don't have that issue but my Canik Rival does it very consistently. I don't use the thumb on my firing hand to hit the slide release, I use the thumb on my support hand as I'm rebuilding my grip to drop the slide similar to hitting the bolt release on an AR15 after you slide a mag in on your way back into your grip.
Certain pistols are designed to prevent the slide from dropping by inserting a mag but many manufacturers still have not addressed the issue. Gen 5 Glocks and the S&W M&P 2.0 are designed to reduce the frequency of that occurrence. I don't know if any other companies are trying to prevent it but I know those two are.

Dude came up yelling and cursing while walking his bike right at us. Good times. The wife always wondered why i carried a flashlight, even with cell phones or my WML. That's why. Lol

I can vouch for the disorienting effect of strobes. I have had 3-4 “episodes” caused by strobes. A haunted house and a couple of live bands. I don’t have epilepsy, or any other neuro condition but an intense strobe can sometimes have a hypnotic effect on me. It resolves quickly but I’m pretty out of sorts for 10-15 sec. I don’t use them for that reason.

@@armorers_wrench When I’ve mentioned it, I have had other people tell me they “tripped out” from a strobe. I spent 39 years in a strict medical surveillance program. Never had an issue on any test.
My HK45c and USPc both send the slide home on a mag insertion about 3/4 of the time. As cool as it makes me look when it happens, I can't count on it 100%, so I plan on having to release the slide manually. The end result is a jerky reload when am already moving my support hand to the slide and observe the slide already closed, so my hand jams on the brakes and moves back to support my grip.
Ultimately it takes more brain power and observation of the specific condition of the gun rather than the 1-process approach.
Strobe works good to attract attention of vehicles when pointed at ground or to attract attention to yourself if you need help. Handheld of course.
I agree on almost every point. First, If your slide drops when forcefully inserting a mag, that is a malfunction and a defect. I also mostly agree about the strobe issue. I do not want strobe on a mounted light. One aspect I don't necessarily disagree with, but rather, have additional input, that you kinda addressed with the phrase "out and about". Regardless of either party being intoxicated, when on home turf the handheld strobe is very useful imho. The disorientation effect against either an intoxicated or sober individual in an unfamiliar, confined setting is for sure. At home, a home you could navigate with closed eyes, it is the same or potentially better than a best case scenario for a strobe on the streets. If you know every angle, corner and space, the defense of the home is greatly improved by a handheld strobe, even against a sober person. I would add this caveat: I use a surefire Z2-S. It takes a triple press to activate strobe. The light can never be in strobe mode unintentionally.

Running the slife also creates muscle memory more than anything. Which aids with a list of things. Like fixing malfunctions.
Ops can't shoot and just do mag dumps in any one direction. Get a trl7 and program the strobe out.

Controversial, John at ASP maintains in all the civilian defense videos he has watched, (10,000ish)reloads are not a thing. He only recently saw one and those pistols were not loaded to capacity. I still carry a reload and practice that skill but it’s nowhere near the top of my concern list.
I kind of like olight's take on them. You either have a triple press setting where it takes a deliberate action or the dual high/strobe setting where it's gas pedal style.
Strobe lights are used by police fire and EMS because they attract attention. I don't think having the ability to strobe is bad, I just dislike when it's random or unexpected.

Bringing the pistol into your working area so that your eye is on the threat while dropping the magazine and inserting one by feel with your finger on the bullet tip, even in complete darkness is a FLEO skill engrained from Academy to every 3 month qualification course. It is just a skill copy paste from there to people running training courses.
It isn’t controversial. Practicing tap/rack/re-asses gets people wrapped around the axle as it isn’t really taught outside the wheelhouse.

Hey VSO! Your opinion on James Yaegers statement that "press checks are stupid." I agree with him. How come you don't know the status of your weapon?
That was the first video I saw from James. After we became friends I told him that my first reaction to watching it was " what an asshole, calling me an amateur" and then I swallowed my pride and admitted to myself that he was right, I was am amateur and that needed to change. I may still be an amateur but I'm much farter down the path than I was before I met James and everyone else at Tactical response.
As far as all of the points behind the manual racking of the slide no matter what, each of these points can be argued against buy 1) buying good, reliable equipment and 2) training to be competent with it. Shoving the mag in and immediately hitting the slide release, not only has it never caused any flavor of failure to feed, not caused me to waste a round ejecting it for no reason, but is also way faster.

The only input I have for tac lights is that the common tactical light should remain the same. The strobe offers the more lightly or not armed individual a means of disorientation of the attacker, who does not know it is coming versus the person that activated it. Who obviously is prepared for it.
I don't think it's a good idea for a weapon light unless you have dual button activation whereby one button is stream of light and the other is strobe and with a single press of either opposing button can hot swap between functions. Turn on button 1, stream, hit button two, strobe, return to button one and it returns to stream and one more is off. Simple single press solutions for speed on weapon lights but tac lights should remain the same so unarmed people have some options for drunk or otherwise beligerent people other than getting a whistle or horn of some type. It has a function for non police work.
That said the weapon light should be kept dead simple for the operator. They have enough on their plate and don't need to be focused on how many button presses for the function they want.
Rather than changing the tac light I think the weight should be put on using a dedicated weapon light without the strobe function.
If the flashlight includes a strobe function, please give me a slide selector for the mode (strobe, low, high typically) and a separate power switch, rather than a button that I have to click through the stobe to get from off to the setting I want.
I like the streamlight 10 tap settings. But i just set mine to high only and never change it 🤷♂️
Watched a short a few months ago from Overton Windex. In it he does a reload then works the slide and you can see a round getting ejected. I can't remember if it was in the video or the comments but he said he would work the slide anyway to make sure a round had been chambered.
I think using that logic you may as well cycle the entire magazine by hand because; well, you never know. At some point you have to trust that your firearm has fulfilled its part of the bargain. That's why we have "immediate action" drills.
I took fighting pistol in April 2022, the only thing different now about the reload is Joey and Tim encourage people to strip the old magazine because too many people stand there shaking the pistol like they are Michael J Fox.

like you said the odds of needing to reload are pretty slim But if i did need to i would like to avoid racking the gun in a high stress situation. Ive seen enough videos of people racking the slide and inducing a malfunction. mostly folks carrying without a round chambered but it still applies. lots to go wrong if you grab the slide in a bad spot like the ejection port or short cycle the slide. seen it a bunch in competitions too and thats no where near as stressful as selfdefense.
Okay, I have several thinks to say. First, I want to talk about James Yeager. I feel blessed that I was able to take the Fighting Pistol Course with James before he passed. It was great training, and I made a UA-cam video about it. I was extremely sad when James told us in a video that he had ALS. I really miss him and wish I could have taken more training with him. I really liked James. There was an incredible honesty about him that very few people can claim. What you saw is what you got. If he liked you, you knew it. He could like you even if he thought you were full of sh**, as long as he believed you were honest and he could trust you. He was a really [good] man. I am sad sitting here writing about him. I really miss him.
Before I go any further, I want to comment about cops. As someone who spent 45 years in law enforcement, there is a real misconception in the civilian world about cops and guns. Civilians [assume] that because cops carry guns, that they are all gun guys & gals, and that they all know how to use them. There is nothing that could be further from the truth. While there is probably a higher percentage of cops that are into guns than in the civilian community, it has been my experience that less than a quarter of those behind the badge are actually into guns, which means their actual experience and training is probably at the bare minimum, and only what is needed for them to qualify to carry their duty weapon.
Okay, now that I have gotten that out of my system, let’s talk about the issues of the video. I completely understand why James trained us to let that chambered round fly. If you are in a combat situation letting that round fly does two things. A. It ensures there is a round in the chamber and you are ready to re-engage. B. It ensures that the magazine works and is ready to go. Those are a couple of reasons it was called, “The Combat Pistol Course.”
Now let’s talk about the strobe function on a light. I 100% disagree with a strobe function on a weapons light. If I am using a light on a weapon, it is to positively identify the target or to actually see what I am pointing my gun at. Now with a handheld light I want the strobe function. Having the capability of strobe on a handheld light is just another less lethal weapon. All I have to do to ensure the strobe doesn’t get me, is close my eyes, but before the subject can recover I can subdue and cuff him, or shoot him, which ever is necessary. Strobe function in a handheld is just another less lethal weapon.

One minor adjustment on the reload procedure. You don't drop the mag from the pistol until you have the new mag in your work zone. This minimizes the amount of time the gun is unloaded.

Almost four years of combat here As an infantryman and later as a scout. James Jaeger's tactics work in the real world. And strobes are insanely important. A lot of these tactical trainers teach a lot of theatrics just to sell something different. Also, people don't seem to realize that police tactics will not work in a military setting and vice versa.
I've never deployed the strobe function of a light. That said, in my mine if it's something you've trained with and can rapidly use, it seems like a 'better to have and not need' scanerio. Strobe doesn't add a material amount of weight to the light. Doesn't cost much extra. And does provide a stop gap between a harsh word and high velocity lead perforation. Maybe there are better options, but sometimes *something* is better than nothing.

For those who get wound up over the idea that one round was lost in the reload sequence, go get it and do with it whatever you like. You don't need any validation, just go and pick it up. Or you can even skip the slide manipulation. You have the rest of your life to " validate " the concept.
Statistically speaking, reloads don't matter in civilian or LE encounters. Look at the data the Active Self Protection has on over 40K gunfights they have analyzed. This is just going down the rabbit hole to argue for argument's sake.
Streamlights 10 tap programming is a nice option. On my rifles, they are high only. My EDC light goes high first but a double tap goes strobe. Tripple tap goes low, which is needed often as high is too much for looking under a seat or at something up close. When i had a streamlight on my NV helmet, i had it set to go low before high and had a red filter on it. low with red gave me additional depth perception for climbing a treestand and similar things without blowing out my unaided eye. Now I use a inforce wmlx on my helmet. Having ir is nice but I wish it had a low option or a red flipable filter. Ill probably get one of them little white/red admin lights eventually to compliment the other light.
As someone else mentioned, and I can confirm from my own personal relationship with James, he would just give his little giggle if he could hear people still being butthurt about saying he said that he verified it worked and was well-thought out.
Also, talk about a guy who constantly would help people in need or even just discounting training to get people more knowledge than they had before. RIP James.

Something that is also not discussed that reloads in civilian gunfights and extremely rare. John Coriea said of over 10k videos analyzed he's seen lesr than 5 civilian reloads.
I've seen plenty of youtubers drop the bolt/slide on an empty chamber and have to charge the weapon anyway. I fist pump every time I see it. One thing you got backwards is that they teach to bring a loaded mag up before dropping the old one.
When I went through Fighting Pistol last(2022) it was ideal that as the empty mag was falling, the new mag should pass the empty mag on its way up to the magwell before it hit the ground. However, I've noticed in many videos that James would just strip the mag out regardless of firearm and insert a frash mag(or one with bullets in it). Strip, insert, run the slide/charging handle and get back into the fight.

I never really considered the whole point of cycling the slide after dropping it on a full magazine, and I'm still not sure I agree. Not all guns do it by accident, the HK P7 series had it as an intentional feature and I've never known it to fail on mine. But I do agree that the loss of a single round isn't a big deal in a large capacity weapon. But when all you've got is 7, then it's a bit more of an issue. I completely agree about strobes on weapon lights, it's unnecessary and can easily disorient the person using it if they get bounce back and aren't ready for it. And it annoys the hell out of me.
I play airsoft. I have both used, and been on the receiving end of strobes.
It is disorienting and hard to accurately target the user, the user can still properly illuminate the threat (using strobe or normal modes). Even when the strobing light is reflected back, it is more useful than not, and if it is a burden, it is EASY to switch modes.
I have zero use for a strobe. I will not buy any light with a strobe function unless it can be turned off in such a way that I never accidentally actuate it.
It all always comes down to training. If, you train at a high level. It won't matter if you train the slide release method or the rack the slide method. If you know your weapon system and do a proper reload than it doesnt matter how you do it.
Interesting you mentioned Powertac as an example - they already offer similar products with different features. A while back I picked up a G4 and G5 models on a sale. The one model had a power button that could be replaced with a pressure switch for weapon mounting and a mode button (that included strobe). The other had one putting for both power and switching modes, and was more difficult to go to strobe mode. Its end was magnetic instead of power button/removable for a weapon mount pressure switch. That was 3-4 years ago so not sure what their current model line looks like.
I don't see the issue of having the strobe option there. Why remove a feature for the same product?
Funny enough, i used to be abig fan of the slide release..... and i still am for initial chambering or dripping the slide in a contrilled environment when theres time
That said, i started dry fire holster manipulation, and using the rack every time i reloaded or drilled a malfunction. I just started minor matches, and the rack method came natural when i had 2 malfunctions..... my hands did it before i even thought about it.
Cleared the malfunction, back to running. Hard to argue with results.....and now im trying to train that exclusively.
The moral is, train the mechanics even if you cant shoot, try it if you dint believe it works!
My EDC light has just about the best hidden strobe mode that I've found, ut only strones if the activation button is full pressed and held for a half second and then will continue to strobe until activated (either by half or full press) again.
I looked very specifically for a light that had the option for a strobe, but had it concealed in a way that i both would never accidentally stumble into it, but also could reliably activate under stress.
Under stress one's usual reaction is to "death grip" whatever is in your hand so holding the button for half a second gives me quick and reliable acces if i should ever need it, while also "hiding" it during normal use.
Fenix PD32V2 is the light i carry and have beat the absolute hell out of and trust it every single day. I need to buy a spare kust to keep in my truck. Its got decent candela, decent "administrative" mode for not blinding myself while looking for dropped car keys, and a nice middle mode that offers both acceptable light level for "most" use cases while having plenty of battery life at nearly 5hrs on a fresh battery with little heat generation
Train a lot your gun will tell you a lot, in battery. Empty or ready to fire!
Well the nice thing about Streamlights is you have to tell the light from out of the box that you want the strobe function. Activating the strobe functionality is all but impossible to do accidentally. And you can deactivate the functionality whenever you want.
I’ve been in a few high stress situations involving firearms and almost every time someone (including myself) will have their strobe going (intentionally or otherwise). I’ve never found it to be a detriment unless it’s actually being used against you. As to its efficacy against a bad guy, I can’t really say. But I’m sure it’s super disorienting to have a strobe in your face while someone is yelling at you.
Absolutely agree with deleting the strobe on weapon mounted lights on a regular light though whether your law enforcement or civilian if it serves a purpose for one it serves a purpose for both.
I agree with you on strobe lights for a handheld light in your pocket or on your belt at the bar/club. It can come in handy. For a weapon mounted light I’d say the strobe effect is pointless and could even prove counterproductive and detrimental to the person carrying the weapon. Only my opinion of course😺
Interesting point about racking the slide after a tactical reload which in all my years of Law Enforcement Training and experience and outside class training I never learned unless there was a malfunction.
Hick's law says the more choices you have the longer it takes to make a decision. For me it's just easier to learn one way and stick with it. Maybe that only saves my a fraction of a second but that might make the difference.
There is a difference between emergency/empty and top-off/admin reloads. If you carry and you're not training to win in a gunfight, you're not training effectively (that includes what and how you carry stuff). The argument that reloads don't happen in civilian real life is a crappy one. Those stats won't matter to the 1 person out of 1,000,000 that will actually need to reload during a gunfight and gets smoked because they didn't practice a basic skill that's easy to practice without firing a single round.
i wish i could delete my "strobe function" on all my lights...... like you said, it can have its uses..... but the amount of times i, or most people will use it, dosnt justify all the countless times we have to deal with it when we just need a flashlight
James' video "All guns should be glocks" and his alliteration that the ideal carry gun is a 15rd 4" barrel 9mm stuck with me from years ago. I tried all types of handguns but came back to a Glock 19 for edc. Hate to admit it but he was right.

I dislike strobe . While I think it could be useful , it is also at the user's risk . 16 yrs ago my then 28yr old wife developed seizures. Then it was described to us that 1 in 4 adults can have seizures for a list of unknown reasons . Lights flickering is a huge contributing factor in most epileptic people.
I don't mind the stripping off/out a live one as a verification of successful reload.
Whatever your technique, train it.
Streamlight has a strobe but you have to enable it. By default the strobe is not enabled on their lights. Why not have the option if people want it?

I don't like strobes either. I've been buying models that have a user-enabled strobe function. I just don't turn it on.
I have taken many training courses and in every one there was something that was taught that I did not see as useful in my life and how I use my tools. When that happens do the thing the way it’s taught don’t argue, if you have useful insight offer it but do the training. I do not really like the stripe function, mostly due to accidental activation by users…..I have taught low light shooting and it is illuminate, ID, shoot if necessary, light out and move and almost without exception the shooters will activate the strobe when the light should be out…..the function has its place for sure I just wish it was a different button on the light

I shoot a lot and have never had a slide fall home without me intending to do so with the slide release or reaching over and charging. I do own primarily glocks so maybe that’s why

Not every hamfisted fud is carring a 15+ shot full size for EDC. Some of us only have 7-8 round magazines so that we have a gun that fires a fullsize cartridge and is actual concealable. Losing 1 round out a 7 shot magazine takes it down to six.
You have a whole body for concealment, carry more spare mags. Better yet if you're not in a non permissive environment, carry a bigger gun.

They make these outrageously expensive pocket organizers for spare mags. I edc one from recycled chinesium, jb weld and neo magnets, 10 bucks? Where there's a will there's a way. Either clean the pocket lint or make sure it functions with the pocket lint.
Strobes on Weapon Lights should be STANDARD.

James came up with his reload curriculum before the john wick one handed press check was a proven technique to prove a round was chambered.
100% agree with the reload sequence regardless of firearm. I have been chastised about running the slide or charging handle instead of the slide stop or "bolt release" purely based on the "its faster and seconds matter" argument. Seconds do matter and I probably ony have one chance at fixing the fuck up so it NEEDS to be right, not fast. I will have the rest of my life to work through the problem. If a tap-rack doesnt fix it, reload it. I have also been chastised, like James' for havinging a loaded pistol in a class (my ccw) before being told to have one. As for the strobe function on lights, I think its stupid but I haven't had formal low light training either.I also am a fellow Alumni and you do need to get your ass down to Camden again.

Good video. I'm old and don't want to be "that guy" but I will. They have this thing now called accuracy and if you utilize it your not going to need to reload. Nothing wrong with reloading the gun just use big enough calibers (not a .380 go bigger.). And won't need to overthink a reload. Yes I tote a .45 acp no its not a 1911 but those fat chunky 230 grain Federal Hydrashoks seem to work.
