It used to be very difficult to install CUDA a few years ago. You needed very specific Kernel and GCC Compiler version and others fun stuff. Now, NVIDIA have created that .RUN to automate the whole thing.... but more importantly, it now works with several Kernels. NEVER USE chmod 777 for executable. Use chmod 555. Using 777 open the file to be modified by anyone... including computer virus.
@@flatlander523 tried to reply but it appears did not go through - for instance apple itunes on windows 10 can be installed on linux with bottles/wine add on.
Linux Mint is more than adequate for probably the majority of this audience. It works perfectly even on old hardware. I installed it on a 20yo Dell Latitude D800 just for kicks. Works great!
I've ben using linux since the first release of Redhat in 1995. Mint is more than sufficient for noobs and experienced users a like. Whether Mint is right for someone is less about experience and more about catering to special requirements and personal preference. For 90% of linux users, Mint is more than sufficient.
@raincloud54 - I was wanting to do the same, but got put off by comments saying that you needed 64 bit. Presumably your 20 year old machine is 32 bit? So, hope you can help, - which edition of Mint did you use?
Great video JC. I have been running Linux Mint for probably 10 years dual booted with Windows. I hardly ever boot Windows anymore. I am not well versed on using the terminal commands but watching your video has gotten me interested again. Keep up the great content on this Windows alternative, Starlink, etc. etc. Big Fan !
I've been subscribed to your channel for about three months. I started because I was interested in what you were saying about Space X and their Skylink services. Recently, I started thinking about getting away from windows because of Microsoft's data mining. I started watching some videos about Linux Mint and lo and behold you start videos about Linux. With Starlink, I understood about 90% of what you were saying, but with Linux I only understand about 25%. Please keep up the good work and in time my understanding of Linux will increase. Thanks
Don't hold back, Install Linux, huge learning curve, but worth it Linux Mint is almost like Windows, but your going to love it... I installed Linux Mint, i started 6 years ago. I FIRED MICROSOFT.
I’ve learned new command line techniques from you. Thank you! The NVIDIA driver process is a lot easier on Linux Mint Cinnamon which is a recommended stable distribution for users new to Linux coming from Windows. There’s a GUI in Drivers app with a standard installed and a recommended version that you’ll pick and reboot your computer.
@@jcristina Some of the things you do like DaVinci may not work as well on Mint. The problem with installing nvidia from the webpage is it may brake on a kernel update and this may be horrible. I saw a comment with the right way to do it on fedora. An other option would be to use Nobara. It is fedora-based and it makes it easier to have nvidia drivers and other gaming related stuff.
Just so you know: GIMP and Krita are useful software, but serve different primary purposes. GIMP is mainly focused on image manipulation, photo editing, and graphic design, while Krita is designed primarily for digital painting and drawing. They are not exaclty interexchangeable in some uses. Have that in mind while trying both programs.
First rule of Linux..... NEVER EVER download NVIDIA drivers from the website. NEVER. You're over thinking it, you're Windows thinking it. Stop that now. ( When your Fedora system breaks, which it will, after a Kernel update this is your solution ) How to correctly install NVIDIA drivers on Fedora ( and most Linux distributions ). Install Fedora. When you set up your user account ENABLE third party repositories. ( if you didn't do this when you set up you can enable them in the software store ). Update and reboot. Type "NVIDIA" into the software store.... click install driver. Reboot Done. Thank me later.
I agree, unfortunately, Nvidia's installation process isn't optimal on Fedora, and Linux Mint or ZorinOS handle drivers more automatically, as some have suggested. As a new subscriber, I don’t want him to give up on Linux because of this. I hope he turns to your method if he encounters issues, or considers installing a more user-friendly Linux distribution like ZorinOS or Linux Mint. AMD and Intel provide drivers that are ready to use on Linux, eliminating the need for installation, I use Fedora with a AMD card.
@@linuxparanoobs Both ZorinOS and Linux Mint lack desktop environment features ( Mint is still on X11) and Resolve is better supported on rpm based systems. Fedora is spot on for his needs.
This is true. On Tumbleweed I just add the repository (even that is easy-peasy: from a list) and install (agree to license, etc. etc.). From then on it is all kept up to date.
Glad you mentioned this, there are a ton of tutorials on the web on how to do this for Fedora and I'd hate to see things go south in a later video because he was using Nvidia's driver.
Joe your content is amazing. The Life after Microsoft cutting the cord and trying Linux is fantastic. Taking the time to explain the installation process and command line is great. Looking forward to more videos.
I started dual booting Windows 7 and Linux distros about 13 years ago. I dual-booted for a while, but in less than a year I found myself using Linux so often for its increased speed and the amount of software available that I eventually wiped my Windows partition and never looked back. The only thing I use Windows for these days is a couple of games I play with friends that rely on anti-cheat software that does not run on Steam on Linux.
Great video. A tech friend has been after me for 3 years to come over. I just didn't have enough info as I'm a visual learning and this has given me the info to approach this - finally!!!
I've been 100% Linux for a few years now.... at first i used VMWare or VirtualBox to test Linux from within Windows... then i finally made the jump full time, I do not miss Windows at all. There are helper websites for finding Windows alternative software that runs in Linux... Don't be afraid of Linux...
@@willieiso118 let's face facts Linux it dogshit compared to windows, unless you enjoy copying and pasting acres of code into a terminal to get basic software to work🤣
🕵♂ Love the show... Been using Linux for a year, ubuntu/mint mainly as my daily drivers and now teaching others. Will load up an old pc with feroda. You're a godsend young man with the extra tips around drivers etc.
I generally do 'chmod 755 filename' to make a file executable. That means that only the owner of the file can modify it, other users can read and execute it, but not modify it. Also, your distribution will usually have an optional repository for NVidia drivers. I would always, as a first choice, install from that, because then it gets updated along with everything else. Tab completion on the terminal will reduce typing a lot. Type 'N' followed by the Tab key, that will type in most of the filename, in this case NVIDIA-Linux-x64_64-5 then it would show you both the NVidia files, and you type either 5 or 6 followed by Tab to get the rest of it.
chmod +x is what i do for binaries, I rarely use the octal permission settings with chmod often enough to remember how u combine the numbers. I also usually never need to use them. Just dont do chmod 777 -Rv on any folder tho, xD. I broken stuff like that
@@MC_DesmondSparrs The numbers are for user / group / others in that order and they are 4 - read 2 - write 1 - execute (or open directory), and you add them together to get the permission number you want
Years ago I set up a dual boot with MS and Red Hat. But trying to use Red Hat in the early stages was a nightmare for my nonprogrammer brain and I abandoned it. Your series has got my attention because I watched MS grow up and they were ruthless and killed companies for sport. I am business person and use exel, word, quickbooks, email, everyday. Can you spend some time discussing if this transition is appropriate for this market.
To install NVIDIA drivers in Ubuntu , you hit the Super key (windows key) type drivers and open the Additional Drivers application (GUI) and it will find the drivers you can install. No need for the CLI at all , for Windows users that are terrified by a little CLI text
I got into Linux years ago as a curiousity. It was the old Skackware distro. It came with a book. After quite a bit of hair pulling and learning the installation process and EXT file system, I had something that looked like Win 3.0 with a learning disability. It was definitely a system for programmers and hackers. Then I went through the RedHat and Caldera distros, some Sun OS, and Qnx as well. By then, Windows XP had arrived and worked reasonably well. Fast fwd today. Many Dell laptops running Ubuntu and a few running Zorin. What amazing progress they made. Its now a pleasure to use! The sheer amount of free software is amazing. Now, in your situation with the need to run very specific software it may be different. I hope it works for you. But as you mentioned in your first video, the ease of installing this now is incredible. 30 years ago.....uhg!!!
hi and loving your videos. Thank you! Botswain pronounced bosun, is an old Navy term for Deck Officer and pre-dates Royal Navy establishment. Old English Navy traditional role for someone in charge of essential ships deck operations. Dates from Merchant fleet days.
A boatswain, bo's'n, bos'n, or bosun, also known as a deck boss, or a qualified member of the deck department, is the most senior rate of the deck department and is responsible for the components of a ship's hull.* A military rank. The guy who pipes you aboard with the whistle thingy. BTW, I am now hooked on your channel because of your very clear and well thought out videos. I had already begun the process of dropping windows in favor of linux, and have been trying to find programs that I need and want. I can't wait to pore through your vids to see how much extra work I've gone through to get the few things I need. Like getting off Evernote (no port to linux, and price gouging).
Thank you for this whole series! I have wanted to move from Windows for a long time and have tried various distros but, the software compatibility has always been a problem. 🤓
A couple of thoughts on the video: 1. Be sure to note the date on any "How do I install...?" tutorials and videos. Linux has changed significantly in the last few years. (Arch now has an installer!) The best place to look for help is in your distro's forums. 2. According to the online docs, Davinci Resolve (Free) does support MP4. If you have to transcode it (Handbrake), then the codec is the issue. DR supports x264 (AVC), x265 (HEVC), and AV1 in MP4 and MKV. Check your output format in OBS.
I made it all the way to the end, it was an interesting video so it's not like it was a hardship. As a long time linux user I'm always glad to see someone promoting the use of the operating system and the programs that are available to linux users. I subscribed to I can see how all this goes.
😀 I watched. Good luck on your journey. I've also started about a couple of months ago. I'm running Linux Mint, and it's been my main platform for my work and play.
Sadly for many of us Linux just isn't a choice. I do tax and accounting work and tax software and most major accounting programs have basically no Linux software available. It's sad that so many of us are locked into Windows or Apple simply because we can't get business software.
@@howardwrentworth3359That's not optimal, in the world of professionals that's just a thing, it needs to be bulletproof stable, and wine does not guarantee that, yes there are bottles, still not optimal
I would look for a company providing a web app. I know these exists, one of the major software employer in my country is exactly this, a web based tax and budget software running in the browser.
I am a Garuda Linux User. Surprisingly it has not Broken in 2 years of Running it even though its Arch Based. The Only Time I reinstalled was when I was Dual Booting and it was always Windows that would break for me which forced me to Reinstall Both. Garuda never broke and the only Time I reinstall is if I want to Rename my System.
I agree with you in regards to photo-editors. I sometimes resort to using GIMP especially if I need to do a 'perspective transform'. However in all honesty "PINTA" is extremely simple and does everything I need about 95% of the time.
pro tip: if you are already at the same directory than an file, you can drag an drop it into the terminal, instead of type its name. you can also press control+c in an file, and when you press control +shift+v on the terminal (or right click>paste) the file path will be there. it took me years to figure that out. before i forget: if the name of the file or the directory contain spaces you will need to put quotes before/after it.
Very nice update. Thank you. I have a bit of a mix at home: One laptop is struggling with Windows 11, another used to have Windows 8 and has been running either Garuda Linux or Fedora for the past couple of years. My main desktop has two SSDs and two HDDs. One pair is for Windows 10 while the other pair is currently for Bazzite which is Fedora based. Tried twice Pop!OS, but that did not last long before it annoyed me. I keep Windows 10 around because of some games. 🙂🙃🙂🙃
Been using Linux Mint as my OS for years - except for a couple of video games that need windows for the anti-cheat software (but even those are going away with Proton). The supported software and installation have gotten much easier, unfortunately many of the how-to videos are by uber-geeks who try to avoid any non-open-source software and love to dig around in command terminal. Nothing against them, I used to be one myself, but nowadays I have better things to do with my time than tweak the OS and software and just want to get things done. Love your videos, they are very useful and informative. 🤓💩
🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓 FACTS FACTS FACTS.. I too have better things to do than TWEAK an OS only to break in because of follow an uberGeek on the tubes. :) This is why this journey will be 100% transparent. I will also, opt to the "easy way" as I know most people are not "UberGeeks" and will not want to do very much besides some copy paste into a terminal window.
I'm 100% daily driving my computer with CachyOS. The only thing that was hanging me back was some software but I found that I was able to install it via Wine and it works just fine since they do not have a Linux alternative. It doesn't run as fast as it does under Windows because it uses my CUDA cores in my GPU for rendering videos, but it actually isn't that much slower. So I'm 100% on Linux and all my drives except my 250GB SSD are dedicated to Linux. I keep the Windows around (for now) just in case. But, I really have no reason to boot into it anymore.
I'm surprised you even had to go to the nvidia website to get the drivers. In Fedora the RPM Fusion repository has the nvidia drivers available. It just needs enabled and then 2 commands to install drivers. new to the channel and loving the series as I've also been working to convert to linux for my workflow.
Funny how you say "I'm in Linux" as though it were an increeedible thing. I have to admit, I've been converting lots people to Linux over the last four years. In my private, one-man-sized activity, I've succeeded making the transition easy. The downside is those customers don't come back, as they never have issues!!! But I'm happy nonetheless.
I like these videos & yes there are many confusing videos on YT about how to install things on Linux. I have used Linux over 20 years & still Waist lots of time trying to follow some Idoit telling me the most dificult way to install a particular program in Linux but it is a Great Learning Proccess because after you run through all the Wrong ways to do something is when you become an Expert at doing it Right. J Thank you for Trying to make Linux understandable for so many Great job your doing. Oh I never really use CD to get to a folder I just open the folder & then right click & open a terminal while in that folder.
You should learn about the super secret right-click super power... Right click in the folder (I'm in KDE, Dolphin), a menu 'pops up' that includes 'open terminal here', you can also open that menu (right click) and choose properties, there you will find a check box for 'Is Executable' (If you don't see that, make sure that you 'own' the file, and that it is a text or binary file, and not a folder that is selected). Study the ways of the GUI for those switching from Windows as many will not be familiar with the command line.
New subscriber here... I look forward to hearing of your success/failure to getting the Affinity suite of tools working. I haven't pursued getting Affinity to work on Linux yet but is something I'd like to see.
I will be testing Mint soon to see how that works with my entire list of requirements to make Linux a daily driving. Keep tuned in. Thanks again for your kindness. Looking forward to hearing about your experience.
About doing commands: There may be a way you don't have to do them at all but it takes more clicks of the mouse than it takes keystrokes You can also edit a plain text file (think notepad) and make a script to do the thing you want done. The advantage of doing a script and then running it is that you can double and triple check and then do it. I am on Linux Mint but here is an example: In my home director, I made a file called "sillything In the first line of the file I put the magic incantation: #!/bin/bash On the second line I put: cp sillything sillything2 I then save it after double checking I right-click on the file sillything and make it so it can run as a program I then right-click -> open -> runs as a program. The result is sillything2 is created. No command prompt needed really in this case
Thank you for the video! I've thinking about a move for some time and Windows 11 has pushed me too far. This most important program for me is the money program called Quicken and is a must have for me. Not sure if any one has Quicken running on Lynux or not... anyway thanks again for video!
Thank you for your frustrations when trying to escape from the Micr0soft pris0n . I'm absolutely not a computer wizard. Yes I've built PC 's in the past ,but operating system and navigation is really my biggest frustration. My current status is; my Z370 MO has functioned flawlessly with the i7- 8700K ,32 Gigs of 3200 ,250 NVme Samsung boot drive ,1 TB ,MSI 1079TI GPU. Thermaltake 850W PSU. But because of life in 2020 ,turning on the PC on was expensive running @95 ~120 watts of power . So I just cut corners and avoided using it. Started buying Samsung A-7 tablets for portablability . Turned on the PC a month ago and windows 10 expired. But I tried to resolve the issue. Because I'm not knowledgeable about what procedures and steps to take or are required ,I'm accepting the fact that I might have to take it in for a tune up, windows 10 removal, get it to post ,Check for bios updates. Then decide to install Linux. I don't play games at all other than solitaire, so no big files . I use it for course learning required for employment and other things,UA-cam, email etc. So I apologize for the cru baby letter but I need lots guidance. So 1st thing is to listen to knowledgeable helpful people. If you can send me a list of procedures to get it to the point to where I can load Linux, than I would reimburse you. If are to busy with your projects, I understand and will say thank you for your videos.
Hey Bud I am liking your videos. Affinity designer is a program I use and like and was old school with them when they was Serif Co. out of Great Britt. I Liked the Serif draw 8 program. Which I still use both. Affinity Designer to create draw and Serif draw 8 to animate. Due to they did not put that feature in Affinity Designer. I would love to get both of those programs to run in Linux. I am using the paid version of Linux Zorin OS. Reason for the paid version it has a lot of the Open Source programs pre instilled and it supports them while saving me time. I will be watching to see if you achieve that goal. So that I can. Thanks.
As one that has been a long term linux user and as a gamer and more linux in the last 5yrs has moved up a ton. Today so many new games work on linux. One thing to get full use of nvidia card use a arch based distro so u get a 550 driver. It makes a big diff.
Great video. New to your channel, subbed. I been using Linux for maybe 10 years and love it. Like you I wanna cut the MicroShaft cord and for the most part have done so. There are one or two things I need to keep a Windows machine around for that just do not have a Linux equivalent, as yet. Once W10 goes into end of life, I will pull the plug to the internet as there is nothing I can't do on internet with Linux. Love your 'No Blowing Smoke' approach. See you in the next vids. 👍
Very interested in this topic. The question - "Is it possible?". I use open VPN to connect to the servers at work. I use Autodesk products for work. I don't like the on going updates that keep making changes, adding things I don't want. I want a system that works and is left alone. I only want updates that protein to a software on need/want or hardware that is new.
So it looks like Autodesk wants Rocky Linux ISO installed in order to run the software for there Linux version. Question, is Rocky Linux an operating system? How is it different from Fodera 40, is it good / bad?
Thanks for this. Seems doable if one is prepared to go back to typing commands. I wonder if Affinity will run offline, because Windows would be fine apart from its connection to the eye of Sauron. Meanwhile someone sent me a summary of the positive legacy of Napoleon and I was reflecting in the shower this morning that imperialism gets a bad name. We always disregard the positives. It then occurred to me that the problem with imperialism is that it's like Adobe's subscription model. You get access to some of the empire's benefits - the roads, the legal system, institutions, security etc. But those are one-offs. Once you've got em you've got em. But on the other hand your grain, your treasure, your best and brightest, your sovereignty, your autonomy - the empire is taking those continuously and in perpetuity.
💻🤙🏼🤘🏼Looking at this. I played with Linux many years ago, before becoming an Apple-tragic. Entering retirement Macs are no-longer within my budget (when my current machines expire 💻💩) So a PC and Linux is becoming attractive again. However, I use video editing software (FCP) and stills apps (Affinity suite & C1) so that’s my number ones. Either my current software or great alternatives 🤙🏼
Yes, and it can be even more simple, without terminal. Just right click on file, properties, rights and change it to exedcutable.... Same like in windows...
You know, Linux Mint allowed me to take full advantage of my 2010 laptop's Mini DP 1.1 port and output 3440x1440p at 59.97hz. I was blown away by how big a difference HDMI 1.4 and DP 1.1 is from each other. I tested Minecraft Java in 50% resolution scale (1018p) and the framerate was hilariously bad cause I'm using a poor NVS 2100M. Which by the way was advertised never to pass 2560x1600-guess that was a big lie! All GPUs can go as far the connector... And uh driver too. Windows never got me passed 900p for anything.
Here you go - nerd emoji 🤓. Definitely can relate to your experience... while some of us might dual-boot having both Windows and Linux on separate drives (and us nerdier types will use Linux as a daily OS, with Windows purely for gaming), the time draws near when the Win-cord will have to be severed, permanently - provided that things in MS continue the way they do... Such a shame though.. from a cross-platform perspective, for a PC platform that's been here ever since the 90ties - and a major mainstream one for gamers - people should rise up with petition to MS... To ask for a GNU-GPL strain of Windows that'd be completely telemetry-free, spyware-free, supervised by GNU-like communities just like Linux to keep any malicious code in check, voicing distrust to proprietary closed source code. The way I imagine it is just like Fedora is a free, community version of RedHat, so would be such "GNU Windows" fork.
You have to be careful with the file system, desktop environment, and browser on Linux. BRTFS does snapshots that are supposedly encrypted and used as a backup image in case an install or update breaks, or otherwise need to roll back to a previous stable state. I personally prefer ext4. KDE's Plasma desktop uses an encrypted wallet, which I disable and try to remove as soon as possible. Firefox, it's parent org Mozilla is adding telemet into it. I'm also wary of distros like Makulu, a Vietnam distro that utilizes AI as an integral part of the OS experience.
Valve is in a perfect position to create Steam OS for PC directly. Imagine finally getting rid of Windows for an OS that directly accesses Steam. Windows is such a round about way of getting Steam doncha think? That needs to change in the desktop industry.
Arch has a saying when it comes to knowing the correct way to do things on their distro - RTFM. The nicer way of interpreting it is Read The 'Friendly' Manual. 😏👍
Been using Linux, particularly Ubuntu, since Win 7 fatal error with an anti virus. Had roommates that had Wincrap on streaming PC everyone could use. Prefer Linux that yes sometimes is a a bit maddening but I control it not the other way around.
I'm watching this on Linux right now! Using Arch Linux with KDE Plasma, watching this video in Firefox - AND IT'S USING VIDEO HARDWARE DECODING! I'm using a laptop that's about 5 years old, and everything runs smoothly. Also, IT'S NOT TAKING A SCREENSHOT EVERY 5 (OR SO) SECONDS!!! 🤣 I have installed the latest JDK, C++, Python, Android Studio, Flutter, Telegram, Signal, Slack, Thunderbird (etc etc etc).
Crossover or a VM might work for things like Affinity. Sometimes the aggravation is not worth the effort though. The way I do it is with two systems: a Linux box and a Mac Mini M1 and a NAS with shared storage ties it all together.
Boatswain is pronounced Bosun. 🤓 I didn't have recent Nvidia GPU (AMD guy), but as I remember it is easy to install nvidia drivers from site, it's harder to make them auto update, or not break when new kernel is installed. May be this have changed. I would love for Linux to be more widely adopted, no particular reason, it just feels right.
if you dont want to use chmod and rely on the gui, you can also right click your file, go into properties and activate the executable-checkbox. And if you are a linux-mint-user just open the driver manager and click on the driver you want to use. it cant be more simple :D (but yes, its only version 535 in the mint driver manager at the moment)
Simple for those that know, not simple for people who don't read anything and are a bit beyond learning. This can never be a real alternative until it's as easy as Windows. I can got back 30 years to when we had OS2 it was a nightmare and this seems no easier.
Fedora is a bit harder. Nvidia installs with a checkbox on Ubuntu or Mint. I've been streaming for three years on Mint Linux and OBS. Two updates had to wait because they broke add-ons, but they eventually were ready. Doesn't OBS support mkv? Also, you can make a file executable in file manager by right clicking and setting properties. Gnome's file manager will even run it as root
You don't need to use the terminal to add executable permission and run those files, you can right click it and go to properties and on the permissions tab click the checkbox to give executable permissions then, depending on the distro, double click to execute or right click and execute file
Microsoft Windows OS Alternatives. Life After Microsoft Windows Cutting The Cord Series Second Thoughts! Today's an update to our journey into the unknown; a journey in to the world of Linux. Our goal is to give Bill Gates and his Microsoft Windows OS the one finger solute. The question is, can we install an alternative operating system and all the software needed to make it a daily driver and not a weekend project? Or will I fail and come crawling back to Billy The Kid and his telemetry stricken, privacy disrespecting, bloated POS spyware operating system?

It used to be very difficult to install CUDA a few years ago. You needed very specific Kernel and GCC Compiler version and others fun stuff. Now, NVIDIA have created that .RUN to automate the whole thing.... but more importantly, it now works with several Kernels.
NEVER USE chmod 777 for executable. Use chmod 555. Using 777 open the file to be modified by anyone... including computer virus.
i am now officially 100% Linux on all my computers
If you don't mind, I have a short Q: If you have a Win10 program (not MS) how do you use it in Linux?
@@flatlander523 do you have a specific program ? there is probably a Linux solution, like LibreOffice for Office365
@@flatlander523 tried to reply but it appears did not go through - for instance apple itunes on windows 10 can be installed on linux with bottles/wine add on.
@@flatlander523 Some windows programs are available in Linux, or there is an alternative.
What program are you wanting to run?
@@flatlander523 Use Wine and hope for the best.
Linux Mint is more than adequate for probably the majority of this audience. It works perfectly even on old hardware. I installed it on a 20yo Dell Latitude D800 just for kicks. Works great!
🤓 Mint is great.
I agree Mint is perfect for a noob to Linux.
@@JamsODonnell100 Linux lite would be a good choice for you.
I enjoy how you take an intimidating subject and break it apart into it’s simplest terms. Linux is the future, amazing tutorials. 👍
I have now installed Linux Mint on my Desktop computer and also on my Laptop, I am using Linux 100% of the time and love it.
Congrats
Great video JC. I have been running Linux Mint for probably 10 years dual booted with Windows. I hardly ever boot Windows anymore. I am not well versed on using the terminal commands but watching your video has gotten me interested again. Keep up the great content on this Windows alternative, Starlink, etc. etc. Big Fan !
I've been subscribed to your channel for about three months. I started because I was interested in what you were saying about Space X and their Skylink services. Recently,
I started thinking about getting away from windows because of Microsoft's data mining.
Sounds AWESOME.. I have not played with Mint for over 10 years.
Was going to say something similar. I'm not good with computers but mint has worked great for me since I switched over last year.
Absolutely.. Thank you so much!
I have done art in GIMP, but then some people think I am not normal
First rule of Linux..... NEVER EVER download NVIDIA drivers from the website. NEVER. You're over thinking it, you're Windows thinking it. Stop that now.
( When your Fedora system breaks, which it will, after a Kernel update this is your solution )
How to correctly install NVIDIA drivers on Fedora ( and most Linux distributions ).
Install Fedora.
When you set up your user account ENABLE third party repositories. ( if you didn't do this when you set up you can enable them in the software store ).
Update and reboot.
Type "NVIDIA" into the software store.... click install driver.
Reboot
Done.
🎉
Joe your content is amazing. The Life after Microsoft cutting the cord and trying Linux is fantastic. Taking the time to explain the installation process and command line is great. Looking forward to more videos.
Much appreciated! Thanks for being here!
I love you man, thanks for your time doing this video. I'm going to install Linux now I feel more confident.
Katrina! Thank you for contributing.. Truly appreciate it!! Blessings...

Libre Office has everything MS Office has and comes installed on most distros.
If you can run quickbooks through the web, then you should be okay.
💾 thanks, brilliant and helpful video. I’ve ordered my SSD to install Fedora as an alternative boot drive in my pc tower.
To install NVIDIA drivers in Ubuntu , you hit the Super key (windows key) type drivers and open the Additional Drivers application (GUI) and it will find the drivers you can install.
No need for the CLI at all , for Windows users that are terrified by a little CLI text
I believe MINT is like that too.
I was born and raised in DOS 3.0 so no problem with command lines :-)
excellent video - went through similar issues but got through them and so far so good
Another interesting Life After series. Your Linux staycation is teaching me a lot!
🤓 Love it!! Thank you ..
Truly appreciate you being here and you explaination of what a boatswain is.. Thank you.
Thank you for this whole series! I have wanted to move from Windows for a long time and have tried various distros but, the software compatibility has always been a problem. 🤓
A couple of thoughts on the video:
Thank you kind stranger, for your davinci resolve info. Now I don't need to convert files to .mov anymore ❤
That's why I use multiple computers. Some are for work, and some are for play.😄

I use GIMP. I think it is fine for what I need.
Amazing ! Thank you for sharing your experience! I will try piper😃 using both windows and Linux at home.
pro tip:
if you are already at the same directory than an file, you can drag an drop it into the terminal, instead of type its name.
you can also press control+c in an file, and when you press control +shift+v on the terminal (or right click>paste)
the file path will be there.
it took me years to figure that out.
before i forget:
if the name of the file or the directory contain spaces you will need to put quotes before/after it.
Thanks for the video. Hey, just an aside, VLC also converts files. On the menu bar, Media > Convert/Save....
Great video. I watched it entirely.
Thank you!!! 🚀
But, I really have no reason to boot into it anymore.
awesome!!
Ooo another cachyOS user! I also use it! It's what I'm comfy with!
Thanks, very informative and interesting!
But I'm happy nonetheless.
for me is a must:

I have used Linux over 20 years & still Waist lots of time trying to follow some Idoit telling me the most dificult way to install a particular program in Linux but it is a Great Learning Proccess because after you run through all the Wrong ways to do something is when you become an Expert at doing it Right. J Thank you for Trying to make Linux understandable for so many Great job your doing. Oh I never really use CD to get to a folder I just open the folder & then right click & open a terminal while in that folder.
Appreciate that my friend! I do enjoy it even when sometimes hairs are pulled out of my head.

Thanks. I've been looking for a good Windows replacement for a while. Fedora seems to be working pretty well so far. I'm testing on my old Asus G75VX.
I will be testing Mint soon to see how that works with my entire list of requirements to make Linux a daily driving. Keep tuned in. Thanks again for your kindness. Looking forward to hearing about your experience.
About doing commands:
There may be a way you don't have to do them at all but it takes more clicks of the mouse than it takes keystrokes
You can also edit a plain text file (think notepad) and make a script to do the thing you want done.
The advantage of doing a script and then running it is that you can double and triple check and then do it.
I am on Linux Mint but here is an example:
In my home director, I made a file called "sillything
In the first line of the file I put the magic incantation:
#!/bin/bash
On the second line I put:
cp sillything sillything2
I then save it after double checking
I right-click on the file sillything and make it so it can run as a program
I then right-click -> open -> runs as a program.
The result is sillything2 is created.
No command prompt needed really in this case
Great content. Thank you! I'll be doing Linux testing myself soon...

But because of life in 2020 ,turning on the
PC on was expensive running @95 ~120 watts of power .
Thanks for your research and sharing!😓
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. This video has been a tremendous help.
Thanks.
Can Zorin run Affinity products?

Thanks for providing excellent insight so we have a better understanding of our true options ! 👿
💻🤙🏼🤘🏼Looking at this.
I played with Linux many years ago, before becoming an Apple-tragic.
Entering retirement Macs are no-longer within my budget (when my current machines expire 💻💩)
So a PC and Linux is becoming attractive again.
🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓
This video is very helpful ty. Maybe you could do more linux videos. I'd appreciate it.
I made the transition some time ago. Unfortunatly it does require learning new programs, but its worth it.
Manjaro includes utilities to install the NVIDIA stack.
Unfortunately, AAC is also not supported in Davinci Resolve Studio. But you are absolutely right, it runs so much better on Linux than Windows
Sweet.
Thank you for a part 2! Can't wait for 3, 4, 5 an ???
Loving this series!
Crossover or a VM might work for things like Affinity. Sometimes the aggravation is not worth the effort though. The way I do it is with two systems: a Linux box and a Mac Mini M1 and a NAS with shared storage ties it all together.
Boatswain is pronounced Bosun.
"A boatswain (/ˈboʊsən/ BOH-sən, formerly and dialectally also /ˈboʊtsweɪn/ BOHT-swayn), bo's'n, bos'n, or bosun, also known as a deck boss, or a qualified member of the deck department, is the most senior rate of the deck department and is responsible for the components of a ship's hull. The boatswain supervises the other members of the ship's deck department, and typically is not a watchstander, except on vessels with small crews. Additional duties vary depending upon ship, crew, and circumstances. "
wouldn't bother me if Microsuck Winders went out of business completely
Likewise 🚀

🤓 This video was needed. I learned things!
I embrace my inner Geek, proudly!

And if you are a linux-mint-user just open the driver manager and click on the driver you want to use. it cant be more simple :D
(but yes, its only version 535 in the mint driver manager at the moment)
Simple for those that know, not simple for people who don't read anything and are a bit beyond learning. This can never be a real alternative until it's as easy as Windows. I can got back 30 years to when we had OS2 it was a nightmare and this seems no easier.
Great video. Thanks!
Right click the file, click properties, click permissions, tick the box that says: Allow executing file as program.
I'm running Mint 21.3
You don't need to use the terminal to add executable permission and run those files, you can right click it and go to properties and on the permissions tab click the checkbox to give executable permissions then, depending on the distro, double click to execute or right click and execute file
I switched to Linux few weeks ago.Very good decision for my old desktop.I like it even though I'm just undeavegarge user😂😂😂😂❤
to change your business tools midstream is a brave move, well done..
My Windows 10 laptop running on a MacBook Pro will become a Linux machine when support ends next October. ❤
👍👍👍 Great series. Please keep going.
