- A bit of an over-explained on how to forge chain links. We've looked at this topic before in the Blacksmithing 2.0 series but it's a good beginner project and worth revisiting.

1.18 - Forge welding #2 Chain [3-links]
1.18.1 3-links of chain. Each link to be made from a 6-inch length of 3/8-inch diameter
rod.
1.18.2 Student will practice and demonstrate competency of the chain weld, including
the chain-step-scarf.
1.18.3 Weld to be as thick or thicker than the parent stock.
1.18.4 Students can choose to leave an apex at the weld or blend the apex into the weld
area

Just a simple pointer. You should mention fire management and how to keep the link to be welded in the neutral zone. Not too high or low in the fire.
Yah that's a good point. I'll be covering the welded hook soon and I'll make sure to mention it there.
Interesting how you turn your scarf into the anvil, while I was taught turning away from the anvil....
Just something more ill try next time.
I watched some videos of other smiths making chain and it seems like a lot of them do it over step rather than the nearside corner. I think I'm largely getting the same effect. As I'm hammering I'm moving the link off the anvil so that I draw out one side and get a wedge on the chain link.
