- In this vlog, I shot a roll of black and white film at Cooden beach on the South East coast of England.
I used my medium format Mamiya 7 II rangefinder camera and loaded it with a roll of Fomapan 200 black and white film. I only had ten shots on the roll and it was just a relaxing stroll to see what I could capture in the last hour of light.
As ever, my dog Barney came along for the ride as he loves it when we do a bit of beach photography.

Beautiful shot of Barney here, Craig.
best part of this video is when Craig told Barney to stay, and he stays right underneath him. what a wonderful friend :)
Thank you. I am biased, but Barney is the best dog out there.
Hi Craig I enjoyed your video , you took some very nice photos. One suggestion would be to show each photo as you take it rather than showing them all at the end. I feel like it grabs attention and sustains it throughout. I found myself wondering the whole time I wonder how that turned out.
Hi Michael, I tend to add the photo in fairly soon after it's 'taken' on the video now. I agree it's good to see the image straightaway especially if it's a roll of film and there are multiple images to been shown for that particular video. This one was a few months back so it's slightly different to how I do it now. Thanks for watching.
The photo of Barny is the best!
your dog is the best thing ever
Barney is one of the best! You're a lucky man.
NeilT thank you, I know, he’s a great dog
Wow a doggy tripod. I should teach my dog Mazie to do that. Love your videos.
I know, I'm just so lucky having a dog that doubles up as a tripod
So neat to see these various cameras Craig in all your videos. Those sand formations on the beach looked really cool. Looked like a nice evening out.
Thanks Diego, I've been collecting various bits for years now. I thought it was about time I started using some of them again and have been enjoying getting back into film as this is how I started. It was a lovely evening and it's a nice place to unwind. Really appreciate your comments :-)
Great vlog, brings back memories of last summer and how nice it was. I’m a big fan of black and white film but couldn’t help thinking the light that night was ideal for colour. That said, the shot of Barney was perfect. Loved what he did for the last frame, had me in stitches.
Thanks, yes it was one of those evenings where colour would have worked well too but I never dwell on whether I've gone with the right film or not. You can never go wrong with shooting b&w. And yes, I do love watching that clip of Barney - it's so him!
Great video and amazing pictures, with my favorite camera. My favorite part of this video though...your dog!!
Thanks Chris, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Barney is a great dog and I like to have him with me on these vlogs.
oh man the mamiya 7 is def one of my dream cameras!
would love to get into more medium format cameras!
thanks for sharing this with us!
really enjoyed this
Yes, it's a great camera to shoot. Thanks for watching/commenting Acid Snow - much appreciated.
Cool camera👍
I have to say my favourite image is the one with your dog in it :-)
Mine too Isabel, he's a handsome fella! Thanks for watching.
nice vid again Craig, man the Mamiya is a nice piece, very sharp..I also like your vid in the foggy woods..
..came for the fotos, stayed for Barney..cheers
thanks for watching
Thanks:) great stuff !
thanks for watching Mikhail
Nice vlog Craig. I think my favourite was the groynes just before the one of Barney. I could have done with a little more context about why you're using the film camera...what it brings to the party vs a digital camera. It's such a faff to source and deal with film now i'm always curious what the continued draw is - not to mention the expense.
Thanks Jeff, I appreciate your comments. Yes, I think you're right that a little more context is needed. I have my reasons for starting to shoot a bit more film again and I think it could expand on this in a future vlog. There are pros and cons to shooting film (and digital). I need to start sketching out a few thoughts so that I can elaborate a bit more.
Nice one Craig, love that dog!
Cheers Paul, I'm biased, but he's the best!
@@CraigPrentisPhoto HI Craig, thank for your videos! I was wondering when it comes to post process your scans, do you use a specific ratio to crop the black edges of the film off or you just do it manually?
Alessandro Perchiazzi just manually bringing in the crop tool to take out the black borders. Thanks for watching ;-)
@@CraigPrentisPhoto keep posting more! Your videos encapsulate a great understanding of photography, technically and visually. Beside extremely relaxing
Thanks Alessandro, I’m glad you’ve been enjoying them. More to come soon.
Your dog is the most amusing about your video"s
Very nice Craig I have just started using my Bronica 6X6 again, (after watching your other videos). I think shooting film again just slows me down, it is just a different way, I shot a couple of rolls this week and am very pleased with the results. Thank you for your vlogs, how about showing your processing and printing of the 120 film? (just a thought) regards,
Kevin
Thank you Kevin, I'm pleased you have enjoyed watching my videos. Good to hear you have the Bronica up and running. Yes, I like the slower nature of shooting film and the whole process afterwards with the developing, scanning and printing. I will look to do some vlogs covering this part of the workflow in the future. Cheers.
Awesome video, love that Mamiya 7 (I’ll never be able to afford it). May favourites were the shots of the beach boxes, they were beautiful.
Thanks JC Street, I'm glad you liked it. Yes, you've got to love a beach hut - very photogenic.
Craig Prentis exactly! We have some here in Melbourne, feeling very inspired now!
4:36 Which shutter release cable do you use it? Great Work!
I've got a few cable releases. Some are better than others and I usually carry a spare with me. The latest one I bought is this one - amzn.to/2VQL1cI
Beautiful monochrome work!
Thank you Martin
Did you use the internal Mamiya 7 meter for these shots?
I can't remember, but I often use the inbuilt meter on the M7 as I find it quite accurate if you point it towards the area you want to take your reading from and then recompose.
Hi Craig, You are one of my favourite photographers and this channel really inspires me quite a lot. I see that Im not the only one that feels this way about your work. I know these are really difficult times for a photographer but I would absolutely love to see this channel continue its growth. Please consider a Patreon platform for us your followers to contribute to you and the channel for us to keep enjoying your work. Santiago
Thank you Santiago. I do plan to get going again. I'll try to put a video out soon explaining my absence due to an illness.
I shot weddings with a Mamiya 7 on Maui 20 years ago, wish I still had it. The Fomapan looked great. It seems to get a bad rap from photographers who don’t know any better.
강아지 너무귀여워요 ㅎㅎ
감사합니다
