Everything you said about sandbags is true. And everytime I see a youtuber promoting sandbags I will always remind the audience that they are making it look extremely easy. I've had friends try Sandbags because they saw me do it and never did it again. Fabric burns on your forearms, having a heavy weight on your diaphragm inhibiting your breathing, the unsteadiness. They are the ultimate anti-fluff implement. It wasnt my back, traps, or biceps that was tough for me but my hands are on the small side. Those had to get strong first before I could "dig in" then allow my muscles to hoist it.
I started lifting bags this year and its the first time drool and spittle spray out of my mouth. It's not easy and all the abrasions and little hematomas are real.
agreed on the burning, ive recently started doing sandbag work using burlap bags where the sand falls out in small amounts and coat your arms as the bag rub that sand on the skin, gonna be getting a proper weightlifting sandbag friday but they aint for everyone, man they are fun tho
Wisdom from a 63 year old....This channel is the most astute and relevant I have ever come across. I have been using sand bags since wrestling in high school and have experienced the same issues with "bulking" over the years. EFFORT cannot be understated. EFFORT is the key to strength. Sandbags provide a unique quality that cannot be replicated. Whatever gas you have in the tank, the bag will take all of it. As stated below by "L" below, it's about EFFORT. The sand bag requires ALL of your EFFORT, ALL of the time. Sandbags cull the weak of mind and spirit. Sandbag is the ultimate adversary, other than yourself. Cops and soldiers have a saying: "Never fight a Farmer". Pick up something heavy, move it from A to B, do it again, but heavier. Farmer strength. I have been on this same program for more than 40 years....at 63 I can still climb a rope. Stay this course, everything will fall into place. It is simple, accessible, effective. Now go out there and get it, even if its hot out and your "tired". I was tired yesterday and it was 105 in NorCal. I was out there, getting it, and looking for the rest of you. You can be tired when your dead. Get out there and see what gifts EFFORT will provide you. Become the uncommon man or woman. Astute site and astute comments. Tip of my hat to all. All of you are uncommon. I find it refreshing.
Best comment ever thank you for this! I get so many comments on these sandbag videos based on fear. It is incredibly refreshing to hear from someone who's walked this path for so long, and continues to benefit from it. Thank you!!
Fear is a useful excuse for the mentally weak. Overcoming a heavy object is adverse. Overcoming adversity makes all of better humans. Seek adversity, it will reveal who you are, to yourself. Sandbags train the mind. The strength is just a bonus. I love the mental game the most, the competition with myself. Nothing less than victory over adversity is acceptable…it’s a way of life. Uncommon.
"Effort is mandatory. Any natural tendency towards laziness or just kind of coasting through your workouts won't work here. It's an all or nothing way of training... And it works incredibly well." THIS! Without no struggle there's no growth, and heavy odd object lifting is always a struggle hahaha Having said that, for some of us eating more than we need on a daily basis is the true effort/struggle, nothing fun or exciting about it 🙃
Another great video Cody!! I have to agree... ive trained many years now, various methods, heavy sandbag training is by far the most demanding of all of them!! As you say, full commitment is essential in lifting heavy bags and progressing. Keep up the awesome content!!! Very much appreciated 🙏
That is it, thanks for helping me see clearer. I have wondered why sometimes I just can't seem to get ANY sandbag or slam ball off the ground. The reason is that I didn't attack it on that day, I just walked up to said instrument and expected to half-ass the lift and be okay. There's this saying "the iron never lies to you", and neither does a sandbag but a sandbag will taunt you for thinking that you're getting off easy.
I love doing the rope pulling exercise you show at 0:18, it's kinda like a whole body cable row. I pull my 100lb sandbag the length of my yard (about 15m or so? I've never measured), then get up and carry it back to it's original place, then run back to the start and repeat as many times as I can in 20 minutes. I've worked up to 17 rounds, and my goal is 20 rounds, 1 for every minute. It's brutal but so much more fun than the usual bodybuilding stuff I'm used to. I look forward to every video you put out, keep it up.
Dang that's some real brutal strength and endurance!! If you haven't read rock iron steel by Steve justa I think you'll love it. It will instantly add another 5 rounds to your workout just from the motivation alone haha. So glad you like the videos!
Just got my first freedom strength bag (100lbs) most likely fill it 75lbs for a while. Super excited but scared to rehurt my lower back. Hoping to build some muscles with this and kettle bells. Keep up the great videos.
Hey that's so awesome!! Sandbags and kettlebells sounds great! My main advice above everything else is to really focus on the breathing and bracing, good luck!
This is why I always tell people for the first six months or so of your training run the Starting Strength novice program. No bs, no rpe crap, just simple compound movements that are heavier every work out.
As you know I have lifted a 300lbs+ sandbag to chest height and the 100lber still feels heavy to me! Now that I have retired, my training is starting to ramp up. I love lifting the heavy stones for feats, but the sandbag is the better training tool for me. Great content my friend! I will be able to be a bit more interactive now.
I have been doing sandbag training, along with some calisthenics, for about 1.5 to 2 months now and my body is already changing. I went from 80 pounds to a 130 pound “sandbag” since i have started. Back, core and biceps are getting bigger. Maybe glutes as well. How many times do you recommend training in one week? I usually do it once a week that’s when i fully recover especially my hands.
Hey that's really great progress!! It sounds like you made it out of that initial 'break in' period, the gains are about to start showing up even more! I think once a week is definitely enough. I prefer a slightly higher frequency (2-3x per week) because it helps a lot with perfecting the sandbag to shoulder skill, but for muscle I think once is great!
Out of all my years of bulking, which goes back to about 2009, was to slow my metabolism down. I did not figure this out fully until my early 20s. I initially wanted to gain weight for sports back then, but coaches constantly wanted me at workouts, or no matter what or how much I ate I would lose it all by the next day. Hardgainer life. Gained 5-10 pounds here and there as I tried different approaches, but one worked best. I stopped doing cardio and any long stretch of walking for 3 months. Dirty bulked. Ate 3-4 meals and snacked in between all day. Get in as much liquid calories as possible fellas! Compound lifts(squat, deadlift, bench, rows, shoulder press). I went from 200 to 230. I maintain 220-225 these days. Now, with new information and ideas being recommended since then, the sandbag is great due to it being a full body exercise. Every muscle is being worked to pick/lift, hold, and carry it. Something that I wished that I was put on when I was in high school. Glad I know now.
I couldn't add a single pound until u committed to a dirty bulk for my first one, it really works! Didn't work as well the second third and fourth (slow learner lol) time I tried it, probably would have been better off with a slower approach but for that first bulk, it had to be that way!
@thestonecircle that can depend on how often you were bulking, and if you changed what foods you ate from your last bulk. I forgot to mention that I consumed a lot of mass gainers in this process. 20: 175-190 Semi dirty bulk 21: 190-200. Dirty. 200-205 Clean Bulk. 22: 200-210. Then cut down to 205 and maintained that. 23: cleaned my system out and got down to 200. Then did a super dirty bulk. 200-230. Later cut to 210. 24: cut to 205 and maintained that. 25: bulked to 220. 26: bulked to 230. Maintained that for awhile and later got to my heaviest at 240. All bulks after 26 have been mainly clean lol.
@@thestonecircle hopefully soon you'll give it a shot. you'd be so pleasantly surprised how much your training transfers to it. sandbagging, zerchers, tons of rowing and pulling, carries and grips, your channel would be a haven for wrestlers looking for conditioning workouts.
Super important video! I totally agree one has to utilize the extra calories really systematically and effectively. I even do this myself, saving the heaviest lifts for my micro-bulks aka weekends (and the Mondays after). The same goes for the cut, btw. Sometimes the bulk really leads to new muscle gains, but they are all being lost again during the cut because of too light and lackluster training effort. P.S. 4:27 is this really the 250? Anyway you make the carry look almost casual 😮 P.P.S. Since I'm making a video about a lighter-but-not-really-light sandbag, it would be intersting for me to know as a reference: How heavy is the lightest sandbag you still employ regularly in your workouts?
That's a good point about the cut too, I guess in that way it's almost more difficult because you have to push without the extra calories and eventually the extra padding 😄 Yeah that's the 250! It's feeling pretty light for carries lately, though the shoulder has been giving me more trouble again since I dropped some weight, actually down to 155 at the moment! The lightest one I use is 200 but I plan on having a 150 soon too, wanna see if I can press it or at the very least do some one motion stuff!
@@thestonecircle Wow! The heaviest one I ever carried had 244lb (100+10kg) and that did NOT feel light at all 😄 155lb - hmm, I really can imagine you shouldering twice your bodyweight one day. This week I've been intensely experimenting with my new 165lb sandbag, what I can and what I still can't do with it. Feels great to have one for a greater variety of exercises. I can really recommend it already 👍
@@creativetraininghacksyeah I cannot understand why it's feeling lighter on the carry but heavier on the shoulder haha. Maybe the leaner torso makes it more difficult to stabilize the weight when it's higher up or something. I can't wait to work with a lighter one too I look forward to your upcoming vids on it!!
bulking and high volume calisthenics (circuits or otherwise) seems like a great way to stay in shape. Id he curious how well bulking would work with burpees thrown in. either sprinkled in or iron wolf style. that plus calisthenics and sandbags seems like a devious combo.
Definitely! That's another thing I've realized I can't do without, on a bulk a good amount of cardio is mandatory! Especially at this elevation, it's way higher up here than where I grew up, even 5 pounds added to my body and I get winded easier
My thoughts after the video Train like that extra rep actually matters... that it is life and death. Effort, effort, EFFORT! This exercise right here right now is important, train like it. Like mohammed Ali said: "count when it begins to hurt."
I'm in the process of shedding the extra fat at the moment after my last bulk. I'm feeling good things coming on cause I hit my goal weight while doing a lot of sandbag, stone and log work. People have mentioned I just look thicker everywhere, like my proportions stayed the same but everything just got thicker in unison. I truly love training with whole body effort, needing everything in you to accomplish the task and having your body work as a functional whole. Not just straining in individual segments. Sure it doesn't develop a bodybuilders physique but it develops a strong, capable physique that you can use to do a much wider variety of things. Everything knows how to work in unison to accomplish the task and now all of a sudden you can feel your forearms contract to help your glutes work harder, your traps fire up to help your quads. Everything acts as one to support the whole.
Hey thats so awesome man! That's really the best compliment there is, looking thicker everywhere 🙂 I believe it too! I'm right there with you I love heavy full body movements more than anything!
Stumbled on an exercise that trains the upper back really well, for me at least. Lifting the bag to one shoulder and then squatting deep with it and then standing straight with it. I got this idea from watching this short: ua-cam.com/users/shorts1Bvs7qmBptU. So I tried it with a sandbag, looks a little different than with this stone but still very similar. What ends up happening is in order to get up straight from the deep squat position is that you have to fight the sandbag from pulling you forward or backwards plus the sandbag wants to slide of your shoulder so you have to balance that as well. My upper back was on fire! Tried push ups afterwards, I'm not great at them, my theory was because either the serratus or the upper back. Well doing 16 of these squats (8 on each side) was enough to improve my push ups immediately, on the same day I tried the squat first.
Hey for sure shoulder squats are awesome! There's a guy called 'Stones of Joshua' who used to upload some pretty crazy videos of him doing those with stones, might be worth watching for some motivation! I believe it about the pushups too! I noticed a lot of strength gain in my lats from carrying sandbags on my shoulders, that could have played a role too, possibly helping to involve the lats more in the pushups. Either way heck yeah! Great to hear you're having fun with the sandbags :)
There a modern take on medieval 'rus' pants, I love them! The leg wraps + baggy pants really make you feel mobile www.medievalcollectibles.com/product/canvas-hamond-leg-wraps/ www.medievalcollectibles.com/product/ketill-canvas-pants/
Love your videos. You give informative opinions and information in a concise manner that is overlayed over footage of the exercises; you’re not just some dude sitting in a gym talking the talk. Quick question: what brand of sandbags are you using (recommend)?
Hey glad you like them! I figure I'd always rather watch training footage than someone talking too haha. I like the ironmind tough as nails sandbag the most, but rogue and cerberus both make quality sandbags too!
Started with some sandbag work last night. I only have about 30kg here. I know it's light, so I'm gonna add some weight later. I love the challenge, and I think I can finally stick to it unlike in the past. I wanna do it as frequent as possible, maybe even everyday. What advice can you give me? Thanks again for your work, brother
Hey that's great! 30kg is a really good starting weight. Sometimes it takes a while for the body to get used to the awkward object lifting, and starting with something that size is smart. Glad you enjoyed it! My main advice is to focus as much on breathing and bracing as you can, it makes a huge difference, good luck!!
Man pretty much anytime you move the sandbag from the lap to the chest with a real heavy weight it's so intense!! I remember the first time I lifted 265 from the lap if felt like my upper back muscles were gonna stretch off the bone, that never happens with the upper back haha
I think that could be a good start yeah! I'd probably line it with a couple trash bags and fill it with as much sand as you can. Usually somewhere around 75-100lbs is a good starting place, I imagine you could get close to that in a backpack. I'd just recommend lifting without any assistance from the straps if you can, so you'll build the specific strength you'll need later on if you decide to get a heavier bag
Yes. Last month I grabbed the sturdiest backpack i had and filled with sand in trash bags. Pro tip: tie down the straps. You dont want them slapping you in the face. 😅
Random question but I notice you have a bunch of different sandbag brands do you see a difference in quality or do they all just about do the job without leaking? Not sure if you already have a video on this but I am pretty sure I haven’t seen it.
Hey I have a vid planned on that but so far they're definitely all high quality! Ironmind is my favorite but rogue and cerberus are both very well made too
No sandbag for me i lift stones once a week ,but since gym making sore i plan to reduce more n focus on stones..i pull heavy vehicles like 20 ton truck n buses ..so i go yo gym for my legs days mostly ..hope ican find my holy grail and keep improving..sometimes squatting is boring man.
Hey, I'm curious even though you only gained two pounds of muscle in your previous bulk. How much strength gains did you get out of it? Is bulking and not gaining strength or getting bigger a thing? You've definitely inspired me to try sandbag training soon. I'm on my way to get my first pull-up after many years off from the gym, after that I'll buy my sandbags as a reward.
Hey congrats on getting the pullup you got this! I was actually running starting strength during that time. My back squat jumped from a very difficult 225x5 to squating 320 for a single for the first time. I gained some strength for sure but more than anything I got a lot better at squats, and drank a lot of milk haha.
@@thestonecircle Thanks for the quick reply. I guess bulking has its advantages, at least there's strength gains. I'm definitely enjoying the sandbag content. I'm hoping to get that first pull-up by the end of the month! Thanks again!
Thanks for your answer. I ask because many years ago I trained in bodybuilding with a 5 day split. Now after a very long time I started calisthenics because my goals have changed and I just want to be toned and have functional strength and endurance. That's why I thought after my actual training I could do 3 sets with a resistance band each for biceps and triceps. I can't get rid of this idea from the old days that if you want to have big arms you have to train them in isolation, many people say that isolated training isn't necessary but if I don't do it I feel bad 🤣
I like sandbags but the biggest limitations for muscle building is that with most exercises it's more a condition type training and not pure hypertrophy. Plus the odd object make it difficult to be more precise of which muscle you work. That's why for now personally I prefer classic barbell or weighted calisthenics! Thanks for the review!
Cory Rockwell aka Mooseville Strong told me greasing the groove with sandbags worked really well for him! I haven't tried it myself but he's a strong guy I definitely believe it
@@thestonecircle don't get me wrong! For strenght there is no doubt the gains you can achieve with sandbag! I'm talking about a hypertophy-only perspective ! And of course if your strenght increases, muscle mass too. But not in a bodybuilder type of way ! Surely more like a ppowerlifter type.
@@RHIMYM but in response to your comment, I really appreciate you being so kind with your words. Most who don't believe in sandbags for building muscle are usually very rude about it haha, thanks for your input 🙂
Yeah, i had this happen over a year ago, I was 150 and bulked to 185. I cut for a while and didn't even get lean, I went to 155 lb instead. I didn't regret it because I was 16 years old and that was probably good for me to learn that lesson. But also I hated "bodybuilding" style exercises, I train at an MMA gym, and the sand bag is perfect for that, so over the past 6 months I've been cutting and doing more athletic style training. I've gotten stronger because of sandbag and that style of training, it's super fun, but hard work has to be put in.
It seems like everybody has a less than perfect bulk at some point! I understand that completely, I think there's this weird division between exercises that build usable strength in addition to muscle, and exercises that are very much purely muscle based like machines, but I disagree with it. Imo at least, all exercises are bodybuilding, some just give you much more for your time in addition to the muscle, like in your case some combat skill. Awesome to hear you've been enjoying the sandbag training!
@thestonecircle thanks, I have a question as well, are there any other back exercises that will get me to be more functionality strong? i use a sled with a rope (similar to the one in the video) and pull, then push the sled.
any advice for people who want to do sandbag training but live in an apartment building? like i don't have a yard to use them in, so i worry the sand would be too messy to bring in and potentially get all over the floor here if there's a leak. and because i live on the second floor, i worry all the lifting of the bags and dropping them would annoy the people below. should i just give up on sandbag training, or do it only in a park, if i live in an apartment building? anyone else in a similar situation? or perhaps just use light bags to start and get some type of insulated mat to prevent noise from going to the people below?
I train with a 150lb sandbag in a top floor flat. I use gravel in mine and the gravel is within two rubble bags, so no leaks or mess. You definitely have to train differently. No dropping the bag because you will shake the ceiling of the person below you. I mainly do up to shoulder and I think if anything being quiet gives you a better workout. You have to be more controlled and having to slowly place the bag on the floor rather than dropping it really works your back. I also have started carrying it up and down the stairwell, which is really brutal, but an amazing workout. Other exercises that don't cause noise are walks, squats, seated stand, good mornings. Basically the only thing you cant do is slam it.
I use a sandbag from RXD, never had a leak of any kind. If I dropped the bag ferociously then the neighbors could potentially be bothered however I always control the bag as much as possible when putting it down and that seems to work. I'm only at 60kgs at the moment so can't speak for heavier bags
If you have any place to store it outside do it that way. Maybe keep it in your car? I live in an apt and just do all my sandbag work outside, but I live on the first floor. I cant imagine hauling it up a flight of stairs at the end of your workout, that would be way too much
Some really great ideas here! I can second the strength gains from setting the bag down slowly, it adds an entirely new level to every exercise. You might try working with a more loosely packed sandbag. With a sandbag like that, the sand spreads as it hits the ground and is surprisingly quiet. I probably wouldn't drop it on purpose but if you're going for a shoulder attempt or something and you lose control it shouldn't be too much of an issue. Of course I'd try find out how sturdy the ground is before starting, just to make sure you don't fall through haha
“To shoulder a sandbag, forget about it!” - I generally hate edit ins, but I would of loved if you had edited in the Rex kwon do guy off napoleon dynamite saying “forget about it!” 😂
I bought a duffle bag and some sand bags and trash bags. You had a good impact on my life. Granted my sand bag is quite loose I think that, that maybe be a point is make the bag tighter.
Hey that's so awesome! Glad I could act as some motivation :) Loosely packed sandbags are pretty great in their own right, but filling the empty space with clothing seems to work pretty well if you want it more tightly packed!
I’m currently running a barbell only strength training program twice a week, would you recommend sandbags instead or would it make more sense to add sandbags to my workouts as I go really heavy on all of my exercises and am looking at sandbags as a viable, more sustainable and functional way to train for the rest of my life
Hey that's great! I think it just depends on what you want, both sandbags and barbells are really effective. You might consider starting out with a couple sets of bear hug carries at the end of your barbell workouts and build up from there. That way your body has time to get used to the awkward object lifting, and you can decide if it's something you want to stick with
I'm 6 weeks into a carnivore only diet. I eat 2.2lbs of steak a day and drink only water. Feeling so good. My sleeping has improved. My eczema has cleared up. I'm losing fat and building muscle. My body seems to be positively changing fast. I sprint 3 x a week. Do strength training 3 times a week and work abs and hit the heavy bag 6 x a week. Sunday is my active rest day where i go on a long walk and do a 20 minute mobility routine. I use a sauna tent 4 x a week and dip in my ice bath for 3 minutes every morning. I've never felt better. Looking after the body means the body looks after you. Great video dude👍🏻
Good luck. I quit and went to a regular healthy diet. It's better than junk food maybe, especially if you lose weight, but it's by far not ideal nor going to make you live longer. Watch your testosterone, electrolytes, and energy tank.
Hey again, just subscribed to you channel: you are an inexhaustible source of inspiration! I noticed that you do engage in some sled / tire pulls with a rope; i myself would like to start adding that to my training - as you've probably guessed already, i am shifting my focus from dumbbells and barbells to sandbags / sledge hammer slams / sled pulling / stones that type of thing - but i am as yet to find a proper sled to use indoors and a rope with which to pull it obviously. I specifically need a rope that's no less than 1.5'' thick for i have large hands and it'll provide more of a grip challenge. Any suggestions as to where to get both the sled and the rope? Thanks!
Hey glad to have you here! It's been a great shift for me, I think you'll get a lot from it. I haven't used it, just have the tire and hardware store rope myself haha, but I've heard good things about the spud inc sled for an indoor home gym setup, could be worth checking out! I have the dip belt from them and its very sturdy
Yesterday I saw a friend after some months, amature bodybuilder guy, he was poking at my arms and back asking how I got thicker. "Sandbag!" You are right about the focus of it, another thing I really enjoy is it seems to hit all the areas that I tended to neglect with other styles of exercise. Really fills in the gaps
Haha I love these things! It does get a bit sweaty though😄 I really like that feeling of having the wraps on, like you're completely free and won't trip on anything
@@thestonecircle i love it too, but not during a WORKOUT! Gets sooo warm i wear it almost everywhere else, especially in the winter :9 edit: its the only thing other than kilts and jogging shorts i can wear, hypersensitivity :p
@shirtlessviking9225 that's so awesome man I need to step up my game seriously haha. I still spend a lot of the day in work pants and the mobility is terrible in comparison!
Whats a good sandbag weight to start with i lift regulary with barbells and calisthenics but im a purple belt in jiu jitsu and always looking to add in different training methods
I have done barbells for years and kettlebells for about three years, I got a 50lb and 100lb when I started. I wish I had not spent the money on the 50lb, because stuff I do with it I can more effectively do with kettlebells and it’s not heavy enough for use as a carry or lifting it up to your shoulder (the main stuff sandbags are good at).
With all the extra core stability and tendon strength you probably have from the jiu jitsu plus the lifting experience you might be able to jump right into 150, but 100 is usually a good start. You can make a pretty cheap one with a thrift store canvas bag and some trash bags if you want to try 100 without buying an expensive one you might grow out of. Or you can get an adjustable bag (I like the ironmind bags personally) and load it as you go!
@@coballard5334 I find my kettlebells work better for ballistic work like that. Doing snatches with a 24kg seems to work better than throwing a 50lb sandbag in my experience.
Been following for a while and made some great strength progress - and people around me is getting curious, ordering sand bags to try themself 👍🏻 My biggest struggle is to make my biceps GROW 😂 Would love some input/insight on bicep growth ❤
Hey heck yeah! That's the best, when your friends start asking for your program 🙂 Thick bar Curls are a great sandbag accessory exercise you might spend some time with! Sorry if you get this comment twice my first one seems to have disappeared
Nah, it's useful, but not putting on 20lbs (of fat) in 12 weeks. A newbie might put on 20lbs of muscle in a year if they do everything perfect and have great genetics.. but it doesnt take as much energy to make a piund of muscle as that of fat. Basically anything short of losing weight, you're going to be building the most muscle you can. It's not that fast, and more time cutting is more time you're not going to gain muscle as quickly.
@@dysonspherehaha, same for me, spitting and drooling 😂
The Ultimate anti-fluff movement it so true! It's easy to forget how brutal sandbags truly are, especially when you've been lifting them for a while

Hey glad you like them! I think you'd like it, seriously the most fun I've had in the gym since I started exercising and it's so effective!
Basically it’s impossible to sandbag sandbag training.
Yes haha
Another great video Cody!!
I have to agree... ive trained many years now, various methods, heavy sandbag training is by far the most demanding of all of them!!
As you say, full commitment is essential in lifting heavy bags and progressing.
Keep up the awesome content!!! Very much appreciated 🙏
Hey thank you!! So glad for your input as always, sandbags really are the best kind of tough!
Yes exactly!! The sandbag shows no mercy haha, brutal but so effective for it!
@@thestonecircle I'll give it a read, thanks for the recommendation.
Not a bad idea!
Never heard of that program
Cool drag sleds
Such a fun thing to do 🙂
As you know I have lifted a 300lbs+ sandbag to chest height and the 100lber still feels heavy to me! Now that I have retired, my training is starting to ramp up. I love lifting the heavy stones for feats, but the sandbag is the better training tool for me. Great content my friend! I will be able to be a bit more interactive now.
Hey congrats on making it!! I feel the same way, something about sandbags feels more like training for some reason!
Been doing bench press with 150lb bag and im seeing better results than a bar. Feels like doin diamond push ups.
Sounds brutal!
Good post
20: 175-190 Semi dirty bulk
You should try grappling, I bet youd be a beast bro.
I'd love to! Keep hoping I'll stop being so busy at some point so I can get into it, probably just gonna need to make time aha
@@thestonecircle hopefully soon you'll give it a shot. you'd be so pleasantly surprised how much your training transfers to it. sandbagging, zerchers, tons of rowing and pulling, carries and grips, your channel would be a haven for wrestlers looking for conditioning workouts.
@wasabi5338 I think it'd be really cool to have that first hand perspective on it too!
Anyway you make the carry look almost casual 😮
P.P.S. Since I'm making a video about a lighter-but-not-really-light sandbag, it would be intersting for me to know as a reference: How heavy is the lightest sandbag you still employ regularly in your workouts?
That's a good point about the cut too, I guess in that way it's almost more difficult because you have to push without the extra calories and eventually the extra padding 😄
Yeah that's the 250!
The heaviest one I ever carried had 244lb (100+10kg) and that did NOT feel light at all 😄
155lb - hmm, I really can imagine you shouldering twice your bodyweight one day.
This week I've been intensely experimenting with my new 165lb sandbag, what I can and what I still can't do with it. Feels great to have one for a greater variety of exercises. I can really recommend it already 👍
@@thestonecircle❤
@@creativetraininghacksyeah I cannot understand why it's feeling lighter on the carry but heavier on the shoulder haha. Maybe the leaner torso makes it more difficult to stabilize the weight when it's higher up or something. I can't wait to work with a lighter one too I look forward to your upcoming vids on it!!
@@TylerdurdenXO7🙂❤
bulking and high volume calisthenics (circuits or otherwise) seems like a great way to stay in shape.
As someone that started training with a low budget and had to get creative with training, this channel is the best. Love the content
Hey so glad you like it!
My thoughts after the video
Train like that extra rep actually matters... that it is life and death. Effort, effort, EFFORT! This exercise right here right now is important, train like it. Like mohammed Ali said: "count when it begins to hurt."
YES! 💪💪
Can’t wait for you to do a podcast
I definitely plan on it once I get everything sorted out with the book! 🙂
Thanks for the support 💪💪
I love to do basic training with natural objects , such as stones and logs ,,chopping wood whit heavy axe is good for me..Sandbag is real gear .
Nothing like training with that stuff!!
Time to write a book, young man
Hey thank you very much for the support! I actually wrote one! It's currently in the final editing process :)
@@thestonecircle keep me posted!
What kind of pants are those, look like an old timey strong man in a good way!

Quick question: what brand of sandbags are you using (recommend)?
Hey glad you like them! I figure I'd always rather watch training footage than someone talking too haha. I like the ironmind tough as nails sandbag the most, but rogue and cerberus both make quality sandbags too!
@@thestonecircle Thank You. And keep going.
@@thestonecircle Thanks, man. You think I can do it everyday? Kinda like practice or greasing the groove style?
Those chest height lifts just look like the ultimate back builder 🤘
Man pretty much anytime you move the sandbag from the lap to the chest with a real heavy weight it's so intense!! I remember the first time I lifted 265 from the lap if felt like my upper back muscles were gonna stretch off the bone, that never happens with the upper back haha
Can backpack be a good substitute for Sandbag?
I think that could be a good start yeah! I'd probably line it with a couple trash bags and fill it with as much sand as you can. Usually somewhere around 75-100lbs is a good starting place, I imagine you could get close to that in a backpack. I'd just recommend lifting without any assistance from the straps if you can, so you'll build the specific strength you'll need later on if you decide to get a heavier bag
Yes. Last month I grabbed the sturdiest backpack i had and filled with sand in trash bags. Pro tip: tie down the straps. You dont want them slapping you in the face. 😅
@PostRequisite hahah a true pro tip you could only get from real experience, I hadn't thought of that 😄
they can work, just be aware that the weak point is the zippers. if you put 100 lbs in a typical school bookbag, the zippers will be what break first.

Are you doing any isolation exercises for your arms in your Training?
Not for a while now, I used to in the past though
Thanks for your answer. I ask because many years ago I trained in bodybuilding with a 5 day split. Now after a very long time I started calisthenics because my goals have changed and I just want to be toned and have functional strength and endurance. That's why I thought after my actual training I could do 3 sets with a resistance band each for biceps and triceps. I can't get rid of this idea from the old days that if you want to have big arms you have to train them in isolation, many people say that isolated training isn't necessary but if I don't do it I feel bad 🤣
@Marder7 I get that completely haha
@RHIMYM whoa this is so strange, my response was actually meant for another comment that was asking specifically about greasing the groove aha whoops.
Would the ideal cut have looked like? Back to like 170lbs I'm guessing?
@@NoRockinMansLand that or around 160 lbs
any advice for people who want to do sandbag training but live in an apartment building? like i don't have a yard to use them in, so i worry the sand would be too messy to bring in and potentially get all over the floor here if there's a leak. and because i live on the second floor, i worry all the lifting of the bags and dropping them would annoy the people below. should i just give up on sandbag training, or do it only in a park, if i live in an apartment building? anyone else in a similar situation? or perhaps just use light bags to start and get some type of insulated mat to prevent noise from going to the people below?

Glad I could act as some motivation :)
Loosely packed sandbags are pretty great in their own right, but filling the empty space with clothing seems to work pretty well if you want it more tightly packed!
What is your thoughts on greasing the groove and hypertrophy with the sandbag
I haven't done greasing the groove with sandbags myself but a friend 'Mooseville Strong' said it worked really well for him!
Good video Cody
Hey thanks for all your support! :)
That way your body has time to get used to the awkward object lifting, and you can decide if it's something you want to stick with
Totally agree - nothing trumps hard work, for all goals.

@drunknnirish thanks fir the response man i guess ill get a 100 lbs one and see how that goes

Feel bulking and cutting is more for steroid users.
