La Latina, it won't let me reply to your comment. The stones are heated in water at approximately 40-43 degrees Celsius and it won't burn your skin when done correctly. If it's too hot for the therapist to hold then they wouldn't be able to massage you with it. It's a lovely warmth and definitely worth trying :)
+ChrissyH I could not do anything other than agree with you, I am trying to learn proper brtitish, and I am so tired of all those massage videos with americans.
+Matteus Johannesson Eriksson What does American massage videos have to do with you learning British English? Watching English language lesson videos made by a British person would make more sense.
If you’ve never had a hot stone massage, just go get one, it’s not too expensive and it’ll change your life. Just watching this video is sooo relaxing.
I should really sign up for one of these sessions. So peaceful. One knows its good if you can teach in a video and the volunteers still fall asleep on you. Great video.
+Homespa Beauty Having lived overseas in Japan in the 90s as a child Ive often thought about this and been curious to the therapeutic properties and the motions to best revitalising people that suffer from pent up stress. I know between driving all day or standing all day many muscles just dont get the release they need so digging deeper and relaxing them should be key. I'll keep learning till Im confident in basic non invasive massages. Thanks again.
I'm going to be starting a Massage Therapy program in January. I love watching your videos, they are so informative and make me excited to practice your techniques!
Thank you for an excellently informative massage. I find watching these things almost as relaxing as actually getting one done myself. Hmm, I might see if I can find a video fo a full 40 minute session. ^-^
This looks incredibly relaxing. My only experience with hot stones has been while getting a pedicure, and having them used on my feet. Who would have known that hot smooth stones would feel SO good?!
Hi, I am a massage therapist and I really appreciate this tutorial. It basically refreshed me cuz I haven't done a Hot Stone in @ least 4 yrs! Thk you for all your excellent basic prep and instructions on this one!
Not to be rude so if it comes off that way I apologize. There's a difference between a massage therapist and a masseuse. I know this because not only is my wife a massage therapist (dual licensed at that) I am currently in the process of becoming an M/T myself and this is something they talk about in the very beginning of the class. Masseuse give honest massage therapists a bad reputation which is part of the reason why there is such a stereotype surrounding the massage therapy world as a whole especially stateside. That and Western civilization as a whole looks down on Massage therapy except for those who embrace the holistic healing aspects and lifestyle associated with massage as opposed to modern medicine which in all fairness does nothing but shove pills down the populations throats.
+20TheGame09 That's a real shame that they have to start the class with a negative. As a fully qualified massage therapist myself (and a f/q beauty therapist) I've been lucky to encounter 99% positive response to massage and it's healing and relaxing properties (maybe that's a European viewpoint?). I understand this comparison in the same way that some beauty therapists are offended by being called beauticians as there is a notable difference between both careers but we understand that the client may not realise the difference and doesn't mean to cause offense. Totally agree about having a holistic viewpoint - utilise the best of everything available to treat an individual on a case by case basis :)
+Homespa Beauty it's not that we started out the class like that, it's actually touched upon in our theory book in the history of massage and how it came to be what we know today along with us briefly discussing how that ties into the whole law and ethics part of it as well as how the honest practitioners have to reaffirm with the population that despite the negative stereotype there are the honest practitioners such as you, my wife and in due time myself who are the professionals in our field. You're right though, unless they have been through the training and know the difference it's through no fault of their own that they can't distinguish one from the other. I hope this clarifies on what I said in my previous response as looking back on it I see now that I was very vague in my wording. I've been fortunate enough to have encountered the true professionals in our field and have had nothing but excellent experiences in the body work I've undergone. Anyways have a good night and blessed be.
+20TheGame09 I totally get what you mean and it's lovely to see someone with so much passion for the industry that they love. You've articulated your point well and I hope your clients appreciate that they've got a real professional who knows their stuff when they book you. Enjoy :)
really great massage, i really need one of those!, very good explanation of the technique and i really love your accent :) your voice is really calming and relaxing
Hello, You're correct, it's about 25-30 minutes for a back massage and the stones are heated in water at approximately 40-43 degrees Celsius. I might be translating incorrectly but if you had a kidney stone I would check with your GP before considering a massage as you wouldn't want to worsen the condition. Some say massage aids pain relief but I wouldn't perform a massage on a condition like this before gaining GP approval :)
Hot stone massage is the best massage to relax your body and get rid of pain, tension;it can definitely help you to fall asleep, so if you suffer from insomnia it is a great to do it before you go to bed. Me and my husband both suffer from insomnia and we take turns in massaging each other before we go to bed. Thank you very much for this educational video!
oh god, hot stone helps so much with any knots. so happy to find a place nearby where the therapist always include hot stone in her sessions. $50 for 1 hour holllaaa!!!
If it’s only 50$ they must not be registered! Here in Ontario, Canada we are registered massage therapists, and hot stone is very expensive per session.
I have a couple of questions... 1. Do the stones need cleaning between sessions and if so how would you do that? 2. What's your take on using powder for a lubricant?
I recently had a hot stone massage, and they have what are basically spa-oriented crock pots for warming and keeping warm the stones and towels and such. It was kind of funny when I saw it, because it's pretty much what I use at home for making soup
I like hot stone massage. I am pretty sure most of these massages are done during the colder months, but I am sure they can be beneficial any time of the year. This client has a good back, which makes the video more enjoyable to watch. I like it when she says, "If there's too much heat, it might make your client jump".
Yes, you must clean the stones between clients and not put them back in the water immediately after use or they will contaminate it. To cleanse them, some people will use soap and water, others will use antibacterial wipes etc. As for powder, I personally don't like using it at all as I don't like the texture and find it too drying but it does have its place and some therapists swear by it for treatments such as reflexology as it allows them control of the area being treated (no slide) :)
You'd love it! Your therapist will have the stones heated to the safe temperature and the rule is if it's too hot to handle the stone then it's too hot to work with. Have a chat with the salon before you book to put your mind it ease. It's a very relaxing treatment :)
Tholokuhle Hair & Beauty Salon Zozo & Phummy You're welcome! There are many variations of how to place stones on a client and you can enjoy researching different methods and their benefits to the client :)
Basalt stones are the most commonly used but there are other types available. They do need to be of a safe and hygienic standard that can withhold the high temperatures without splitting or harbouring bacteria so it would always be essential to buy them from a reputable company & do your research :)
i myself have had several back injuries in the past few years, should i get massages often. to help ease pain? i get lots of pain in my midlower back region
They can definitely help to ease pain and aid mobility but you should always check with your GP first to make sure that you've got the all clear for a treatment. Your therapist can then discuss the best treatment plan for you. Best of luck!
These stones were warmed in a stone heater which uses thermostatically controlled water to keep the stones at a safe temperature. There are also dry stone heaters available. You can see more on our complete hot stones massage tutorial :)
It's because your hands become accustomed to a higher working temperature quickly due to continuously exposing them to extremes of temperature throughout daily working life. Your body, however, isn't so accustomed to temperature changes and the skin is much more sensitive, so if you were to use too hot a stone to begin with, even through your hands might cope with the heat, the sensitive nerve endings on the client's body may not, so we are careful to check this and keep the stones moving :)
that looked interesting! so many different ways to do hot stones! one thing I am afraid of is loosing the connection! I am a student and have massage over 100 times already but I am going to try hot stones from home
I'm having trouble finding a set of basalt stones that have a large stone and those little cylindrical looking ones that you demonstrated around the shoulder/neck area. What are those stones called? or rather can you suggest a set that has those and where I can purchase that set? Can you buy them separately? I just received my set in the mail and was disappointed not to have found them as part of the set. If I can buy them separately, I might just do that, but if not, I can exchange them for a proper set if I know what to call them. If you could help with that, thanks.
+jephybean You should be able to buy these separately to add to your core set and they can come under various different names. Ellisons are a beauty supplier that stock them and they refer to them as a Basalt contour stone & sell them in sets of two. My kit is made up from stones from various suppliers and when I looked online most of them are no longer there. The large stone is sometimes called the sacral stone, belly stone or even just an extra large stone and Ellisons, Salon Services etc. could be a good place to start looking :)
If you like heat and deep relaxation then you'll love it. Remember that the stones are at a working temperature so although warm, they should never burn (and your therapist wouldn't be able to hold them if they were too hot).
You tend to build your collection from various sources over time, so I don't have a specific link but a good place to start to do your research is via independent sellers. I haven't personally used this set but it seems to have good reviews, so definitely worth reading them :) www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007LS7IS6/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=homespabeauty-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B007LS7IS6&linkId=60e880f83ba4c14ddb150abdad8f7b80
You're welcome and you'll find the full Hot Stones Massage Techniques tutorial on our channel. We're also planning real-time massage tutorials with no speaking in the near future so you might find those helpful too :)
If you're someone who trains in the gym constantly, should one receive this kind of massage on a rest day? For example, I train my back and that evening have a hot stone massage. What is your recommendation?
A massage after training can be very beneficial to prevent extreme muscle pain the next day. Hot stones should be fine as the heat and deeper pressures are extremely effective but as everyone is different and their muscles respond to exercise differently, it would be best to have a chat with your therapist and decide on the best method of massage for you. If hot stones is working with no side effects then it sounds like the right choice for you :)
That looks so relaxing. My shoulder blades tense up and get knots. I bet those hot stones would loosen the rope-like tension. The heat wouldn't bother me, believe me, I'd take it!
Madam masseus, I love your accent and your partner is lovely. such beautiful hair and skin tone. Thank you for a helpful technique which I will try soon. Blessings and peace from South Africa
Ideally you can ask for both to be incorporated into a massage as the heat of the hot stones aids relaxation and the depth of pressure with the stones can be deeper than manual massage, but you can't substitute the holistic approach of human touch and being able to adapt and manipulate to where the tightness is. Chat it through with a therapist and they'll know exactly how to proceed with the massage (and you'll really feel the benefit!) :)
