I remember when Croce died. It was a horrible time. My father had a nervous breakdown; watergate was reaching a crescendo and our beloved Vice President resigned around then. Then came the Yom Kippur war and the Oil Embargo. And to round out the year, I slipped and hit my head on New Year’s Eve and had to get stitches.
Kenny Loggins in his book "Still Alright" said that he and Jim's guitarist Marty Muehleisen traded guitar licks in the laundry room of the Holiday Inn prior to the plane crash.
There are a few reasons why 'they just don't write songs like that anymore' ... one reason I think is many popular music artists today rely on professional songwriting teams for material.
It’s rumored that after writing the same song twice (“Don’t mess around with Jim” and “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown”), that Croce was going to finish this off with a hard-hitting third song to make this a trilogy. Unfortunately his subject matter was Corn Pop. Croce messed around and found out.

I loved Jim Croce from South Philly. Sad about his plane crash. Pilots: beware of treetops!
Thank you for explaining this. Appreciated.

I was a senior in high school when his untimely death occurred. I can’t think of a single song of his I don’t love.
