  • MAKING A CAREER SHIFT INTO TECH
    So you want to learn how to get into tech? Making the switch into a tech career can be daunting. You may be flooded with questions like: how can I learn to code?, how will I make the transition into tech?, what will a tech career look like for me? When I was just getting started I had many of the same questions along with some about what it would be like for women in tech like me.
    Before becoming a self taught developer I struggled through many of these same things. In this video I share bits of my story as well as 5 career tips on how to break into tech.

    Hey Fam! I'm Nicole! I am on a journey to becoming a self-taught Front End Developer. I started this channel to show that learning to code is possible for anyone and to encourage more women and people of color to start learning hard skills like coding and get into tech! On this channel you will find my stories of being a black woman navigating the tech industry, starting my own tech freelance business and learning new coding skills. I will be sharing all of the systems, strategies and resources that I am using to grow and a developer and freelancer. I would love for you to join me!

    Just came across your channel today; I’m in the process of learning to code HTML and CSS again; and your content has helped so much on how to make my career change.
    I also enjoy seeing other women getting into tech just because of how male dominate the tech industry can be.

    I just started taking the google I.T. Certification course. Most people say I should go get COMPTIA A+ but I hate self studying. I need to feel like I’m in class to pay attention. Haha. I’ll go after the A+ certification but I feel like learning from google will be better just to get me started. I have a B.S. in exercise science but I’m shifting from the fitness world to technology hopefully I stay with it and build a career in technology.

    I just switched from a boring finance career to digital marketing, paid search. I want to fuse this with UX since I feel a paid search background will be valuable for a UX career. Like not only would I be able to speak on how ads should be displayed on different apps and why, but I can also give input on how the app should flow and function.

    Thank you Nicole! Another great video. I'm currently beginning to plan my career shift journey and daunting it is! I'm taking it slow.. partly because I'm a little intimidated but also because I have a stable job at the moment... I've started watching UA-cam videos on how to code in Python which I really like but am unsure about what my next step should be--community college courses, going back to school altogether and if so, back to get a bachelors or masters, bootcamps, etc. As you said, research is key! Thanks for motivating me to get on top of my sh*t!!!

    • @nicoleyoungtech
      @nicoleyoungtech  4 роки тому +3

      I so understand where you are! I think you are in a PERFECT position though to make a shift. Keep your day job and find an online course or bootcamp that offers self paced or evening classes and build those skills before you make the leap into a new job! You've got this!

    Hey 👋 Nicole, great video ! My biggest things I’ve had to work on is getting the newsletters and creating a plan. Being so eager and passionate, I always forget to create a plan because I’m always ready to just jump in. On another note 📝, will you be telling us more about freelancing ? I’d love to hear about that too! Thanks 😊

    • @nicoleyoungtech
      @nicoleyoungtech  4 роки тому +1

      I'm the exact same way, along with over estimating what I can accomplish in any amount of time. Making a plan helped me with that too lol And yes! Toward the last quarter of the year I will be sharing a lot more about the freelancing side of what I do and more behind the scenes content around it.

      I so understand where you are coming from and that is why I invested into some online learning options as well. The one that I payed for was Skillcrush. They have a free week bootcamp to learn the basics but also have tons of great (and practical) courses of what you need to know to get your foot in the door as a developer or designer (or both because I definitely took classes in them from each track) They have sales periodically on their bundles so check them out and see if it is something for you!

      My first job I was making between 40-50k but I wasn't working as a developer. As a freelancer I have been making about the same considering things that I've dealt with during covid. Hope this helps. But I would say do some research of the standard and consider the value you are bringing and find a number that feels right to you. And remember that tech professionals are more likely to get pay bumps every couple of years as they progress so don't feel like you will be stuck where you start. Hope this helps!
