I attended Downey High School from 1976-1979. And graduated with the Class of 1979. Thanks for making and sharing the video. My how the school has changed. I still recognize the R & S Buildings, the Gym and the Cafeteria. I even saw a couple of names on the recognition wall who I was friends with in high school,.
Thank you for sharing. DHS was a very big HS. The high school I graduated from back in the 70's was about 2,400 students, and I thought that was big. It's my understanding that K & R were very well liked at DHS, and in the community. I couldn't help but think about KC's early recognition at Joe Osborn's "garage" when she only 16. Thank you Joe, and thank you again for posting this video.
I'm so glad they finally paid tribute to them. I remember my freshman year just before school started it was the first day of band camp and I saw a plaque in the band room when Karen Carpenter's mame on it. Hers was the first name for a VIP Band member. It was the only thing there recognizing her. In my senior year I was organizing the sheet music room and nosing around I found an 8'11" photo of the whole band with Karen Carpenter in the front. The pictures were just piled in the back. I couldn't understand why that picture wasn't enlarged and put on the wall as tribute to her. I graduated in '97 and that's when I believe they first started building the stage and putting up plaques of people's names. Downey High has definitely had a full blown makeover. It looks beautiful and the kids going there these past years seem to be doing quite well. We'd drive through Downey once in awhile and the city has been revitalized. I just wish we still lived there to enjoy it but we moved around the time the movie studio was built and filming scenes at the old Rockwell/Boeing site.
I went to Downey High - Class of '66 - the buildings you were looking at (4:26) are "R" Building (west side - Brookshire Ave) and "S" Building (east side) I had French with Mrs. Burris in "S" Building (so - no it was not the gym) and Algebra with Conrad Cooper in "R" Building. The area between the two buildings was our "Quad" and the tower where you saw the murals had a bell in that tower and some brave cheer leader would climb up there and ring it - until the teachers caught us and made him come down. I remember Richard Carpenter ( he didn't know I was alive) coming into my music appreciation class and practicing piano during snack.
My husband (‘63) and I (‘65) graduated from Dwy Hi. Loved our time there. We Each went to our tenth year reunion. Sadly haven’t attended another. Have Been living in New Mexico since 1980. Viewing your You Tube has prompted me To look up classmates and/or attend a Reunion. Thank you.
Thank you so much. Great video. I was a senior there when they had The Karen Carpenter Stage introduced. What a thrill to visit while sitting in my bed.
I remember the day Karen and Richard came back to band class to tell our conductor that they had signed a record contract with A&M. (I was a few years behind them). And yes, the campus is very different today. Thanks for the tour, and the information. I had no idea about Metallica or the Black Eyed Peas. My era included Ken Shelly and Jo Jo Starbuck (once Mrs Terry Bradshaw), who were Olympic Figure skaters. ahhhh, I see you showed their plaque near the end of the video. Very nice, Thanks.
What a great video! The high school I went to was in Ajo Arizona I only had 100’ students in my class! It was a AAA school back then! Thank you Steve for sharing you always do a great job and the detailed information is great! Thank You! God Bless!
It was great to accidentally come across this video! I coached at DHS in the ‘80s, and recognized the names of a couple of my colleagues on the Wall of Fame. Just FYI, James Hetfield was a student at Downey when I worked there, but I believe he transferred to another high school before his senior class would have graduated.
I think the man you're referring to that discovered the sunken Titanic is Dr. Robert Ballard, he is the current Professor Of Oceanography at the University Of Rhode Island here in my home state.. Great man!!
@@TheGraveyardChannel - Oh no I wasn't correcting you, you said in your video: " The man that discovered the wreckage from Titanic." ... Sorry if I sounded that way, it wasn't intended! Great video as always my friend!
I thought James Hetfield left before graduating. I remember hearing on a documentary on Metallica years ago that he only went to Downey his freshman and sophomore years. I also remember one teacher pointing towards where I sat telling the class that it was where James Hetfield sat when he was there LOL.
My name is Ron McGovney and I graduated from Downey in 1981. I was a friend of James Hetfield and he went there in 9 and 10th grade. His mom passed away during our junior year and he had to live with his brother in Brea. He graduated from Brea Olinda in 1981. We formed Metallica in a garage that my parents owned in Norwalk.
So whatever happened to Cyndi carpenter, their cousin that also went to Downey high and to Downey first Baptist Church? Beautiful girl, long red hair, sing in our church choir...
Right now what I have in mind is 23 Elm Street in West Orange NJ. It is the house in which David Cassidy grew up. From what I see on Google Maps, it looks the same as it did back in the 1950s when David was a boy in that neighborhood. In David's autobiography "C'mon Get Happy" there is a photo of the house well after he grew up and moved out of it. It seems to not have changed much. I wonder who moved into it and if she/he/they have any idea. goo.gl/maps/SK5TgGLfGaK2

Enjoyed the Downey High School tour where the Carpenter's went. A nice change of pace to the cemetery routine. Thank You

Wow, that's cool. You had some very impressive alumni. Must have been inspiring!

Hi Joe, thanks for sharing. What a great memory.
Thanks Steve. Nice video. I love the sounds of the birds in the background.

I went to both Downey High and Ajo high school
I graduated from Downey in 1983. The Carpenters memorial was near the pool at that time. Richard came to the dedication.
James was in my neighbors band called Obsession when he attended DHS
How cool! Thanks for sharing that with us Mr. X 😊👍
The high school I graduated from is now a junior school. The school I went to is way smaller then when I went

I had forgotten what I said :-) Thanks, PJ!
@@TheGraveyardChannel - no problem bud !
I went to Downey High.. Class of 1987
Also, what happened to Daryl and Jeff Goddard who also went to Downey high and work great musicians...
Good !
George Pajon Jr of the Black Eyed Peas and Cairo Knife Fight graduated from DHS.
You only came here because James Helfield studied there
I think the two from Metallica that graduated from Downey were James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett.
Thanks, Annette!

Thanks for watching Regina 🎃👍
Karen carpenter is my favorite female singer
RIP Karen Carpenter
the city tore down my high school and built homes. :(
:-(

So Interesting. It would be really awesome if you went to the High Schools or childhood homes of other famous people. I could name some.
I recently did a video on Hollywood High School and I have a few more in mind, as well. Thanks for the comment.

I live on the west coast, but I'm sure someone on the east coast will do it, if they haven't already. It would be cool to see.
that high school was known for other things like, James Hetfield from Metallica
