It happened to mine I lost 4 quarts of oil in a1/4 mile the road behind me was nothing but smoke as in the road was shut down . I woke up and tried to start it no good it was hydroloked . I fixed it in my appartmint parking lot I jacked it up a little got under and replaced the oil separated $236 it was tight but it only took 2 hrs . Then I took all the plugs out and terned the motor over for 10sec sprayed carb cleaner on the plugs put them Bach in and hit the key she started right up blew smoke out the pipes real bad ones I got on the road and hit the gas it cleared up real fast and she ran 100% for the next 50k miles and I sold her . It was a 2001 so don’t freak out it’s no big deal.

i replaced my AOS but there is still some smoke ( definately white smoke as it floats in the air and doesnt dissipate like steam) on start up every morning, but if i leave my 987.1 parked for 3-4 days no smoke on start up.. 1 puff of smoke and after that no smoke.. oil level is the same doesnt need a top up in 2000 miles

What are your thoughts on replacing the AOS as preventive maintenance (3 yrs / 30k miles) and also adding an oil catch can to help prevent a disaster for when it would fail over time? Would that be a wise thing to do for extra security or would it potentially introduce other issues? Thanks for all the videos, I'm learning a lot about these cars before buying one! :)

There are write-ups on how to do something like what you're describing here... THey seem to work well.
This is probably the worst failure point that *everyone* will experience on these cars over time. I almost lost an engine to AOS before, then i read stories of dozens of engine failures including GT3 cars..

So what's the advice as to when to replace it? If just spirited road driving, is there a mileage or year interval to replace them? I've heard the stories of new ones going quick just because they are bad quality. Is the real solution just to put the motorsport version in? Sorry if I'm asking silly questions. Any signs to look for before an AOS goes bad? Thanks and I always appreciate what information you share. All the best!

3 yrs/ 30K miles. The most common symptoms are smoking from the tailpipe and increased oil consumption. You may hear a whistling sound. The best way to monitor the health of an AOS is by a manometer. Watch this video...

@@RennvisionbyTheKnowledgeGruppe Thank you for the info and I'll get right on it. My car has the original AOS with 31K miles.

Remember, time in service is an important consideration with 20 year old Porsches. That's why you need to purchase a manometer and test it regularly. These engines do not respond well to a failing AOS as shown in the video.

@@RennvisionbyTheKnowledgeGruppe So below 5 is problematic because something could be wrong with the engine. Above 6 is an issue with the AOS. Is that the correct understanding?

@@RennvisionbyTheKnowledgeGruppe Yeah this is one item i would for sure replace as PREVENTIVE maintainence isntead of waiting on symptoms.

    Yikes!
Is there any warning signs that the AOS is failing?
My 996 is 21 years old with 75K, should I just replace the AOS as preventative maintenance?

You might hear a whistling sound from the increase in vacuum through the ruptured diaphragm, but the tell tale sign is smoking from the tailpipe and increased oil consumption. But you don't want to let it go that long which could kill the engine. Purchase a manometer. We have a video on how to check the AOS with a manometer here on UA-cam.

I wouldnt call it engine death, unless you hydrolock it by driving while its smoking yeah maybe but its pretty easy to fix
