Shot Bro.... Nicely done. Lovely to see my Uncle Eric flying from The Ark Royal in his plane Number 645. These pilots and their crew were amazing people... not only in the war but to their dying day!
February 1942 six Swordfish intercepted the English channel break out of three German warships. All were lost and the leader received the VC. Their bravery was greatly respected by the adverseries; the Scharnhorst captain commented on their determination against overwhelming odds exposed to escorting German FW190's.
One reason the swordfish was so successful against the Bismarck was her antiaircraft guns were designed to track faster planes. The Germans over engineered and forgotten about old school. God bless old school!
Hello I've recently taken an interest in the Swordfish and a specific action during 1941. From the internet, I am told that the Arado Ar 196 float plane, was aboard the Bismarck. The Bismarck was equipped with four of these float planes. There's also a UA-cam video available that shows how well the Arado did when encountering six Spitfires. So I've always been interested in this naval battle, however there's never been mention of the Bismarck and it air capabilities. It's my understanding that only sorties of 3 Swordfish at a time were launched. So the Bismarck only saw 3 at anyone time. There's also no mention of if the Bismarck was aware of the Catalina PBY that was tracking it. Just thought this to be an interesting point to consider.
It's no lie to say that as the swordfish from HMS Ark Royal's 810, 818, 820 Sqds took off to attack Bismarck on 26 May 1941, the inclinometer onboard was showing that the fore end of the flight deck was falling and rising as much as 60 ft between the storm lashed wave crests in the north Atlantic. That meant that the pilots, unaided by steam catapults, would time their take off run (more of a take off walk tbh) so that they accelerated along the flight deck into the belly of a wave that was as high as a 5 storey building, ready to become airborne as the carrier's bow crested, and before the deck once again crashed into the next trough. Aircraft held together with doped cloth and wires.... crewed by men with nerves of STEEL. Respect to their memory !!!
That's ok meme away, I didn't actually know him but I will remember his life as long as I live. We must never forget our lost. Thanks for the kind words take it easy matey
The Swordfish shares the same position of its time with the SBD Dauntless; planes that were known to be outdated or underpowered, and yet still successful in spite of their flaws.
SBD was not outdated. It was first flown in 1940, and had lots of modern features, including retractable landing gear, a full canopy, all metal construction, and perforated dive brakes. It also had an huge bombload compared to the Japanese D3A.
It did take a while. but they were more about the engines than the plane.. the radial engine was far to wide causing issues with aerodynamics.. but when the got the inline engines like the merlin into action, they realised speed would just get better
Why throw away one of the most effective naval aircraft designs of the 1930s? No aircraft could match its STOL abilities, and its versatility, hence why it ended up with the record for the highest tonnage of enemy shipping sunk in WW2. Leave your "anti-uk baggage" at the door please.
I suppose being beaten with a wooden club wouldn't hurt as its old and outdated. Besides The Swordfish wasn't outdated, It was built for a specific purpose....a heavy lift STOL carrier borne aircraft for the stormy north Atlantic, torpedoing your rudders where other aircraft couldn't take off.

Thank you.. what great history that your grandfather flew the swordfish
The severe damage to the Italian fleet at Taranto. Amazing
it was vast!

thank you.. there was so much info but i had to smooth it down to keep the video short
This is super cool! Keep up the great work!
Thank you! Will do!
That was a fine video, well-made.
Thank you

Agreed.. to bomb it down the flight deck under their own power was balls of steel!!
That’s really interesting!Thanks man!
Glad you liked it!
The swordfish avenged my uncle so I love it .... bloody Bismarck
hahaha the torpedoes were an effective weapon in ww2
I would say a meme about that it’s illegal to hate the bismarck but it was the cause of the death of a loved one .
Im sorry for your los
That's ok meme away, I didn't actually know him but I will remember his life as long as I live.

Totally underated :)

Nice footage :-)
Thanks for visiting
What surprises me is the difficulty which British had outgrowing the Bi-Plane design ., ,,,,,

Interesting that it was designated 'TSR 2'.
Yes thats what i found out when researching it
yup yup I love this stuff. very interesting!
Me too!
I enjoyed that.. something different :D
I'm glad!
I sat in one of these
are they quite cramped for a bomber?
MOS6510 Models not as much as you’d think, but is very hard to get into with out the ladder we used at yeovilton
I just built the model of this plane.
what was it like?
One of the worse models I built.. lol
I guess your talking of the revell kit? lol
it was outdated before it was created
but still served a purpose.. Thanks for commenting :)
Swordfish held the distinction of having caused the destruction of a greater tonnage of Axis shipping than any other Allied aircraft
it wasn't outdated at all.

@@williambradley9419 it was the best aircraft in the world for its job, by far. nothing came close.
