    Awesome video, just what I have been looking forward to seeing. In the process of building my own flat lap right now.

      My Grandson is helping me build it. We will pick up the 5 different laps tomorrow from the post office, already got the cabinet started. I'm using a 5 gallon bucket for the lap bowl and water spin off vessel.

    Kia Ora bro, what thickness do these blanks start at roughly? And how thick is a finished piece roughly? Also do they taper from top to bottom from the side on view? Or the same thickness through the whole length…Ngaa mihi nui🙏🏾

    • @CampbellCarving
      @CampbellCarving  4 місяці тому +1

      About 1 cm is a good thickness for this style i think can go more or less. A side view taper is an option, i like it personally, not necessary though

    Great video mate. What is the name of this stone you are using, in both Maori and English?

    • @CampbellCarving
      @CampbellCarving  2 роки тому

      Pounamu is the maori name, common name is greenstone and scientific name is nephrite.

    Kia Ora matua,do you recommend a backing plate with flat laps?

    • @CampbellCarving
      @CampbellCarving  2 роки тому +1

      I have used mine with and without. Depends on the thickness of them and how precise you want your flat edges to be. Precision costs a whole lot more money and time to get it right.

    Kia Ora brother,what’s the next steps?do you use different grit laps,eg 80-and up?do you still sand?would you recommend laps wheels to wet grinders?I like the big flat face of the flat lap,as compared to the 1.5 inch width of the grinding wheels,any advice would be appreciated,
    Nga mihi

    • @CampbellCarving

      People use both laps and or wheels for this personal preference. I have just got a expanding drum with a 400g belt on it. So I go from 120g flat lap to the 400g drum then sand with 280 and 400 on my foot powered Potters wheel, then done. There are videos of it all on my channel if you search for them.

    What about on a smaller Toki, say 2 inches. Do you still use the same blade? Reason I ask is it seems like it would be hard to hold a smaller piece.

    • @CampbellCarving
      @CampbellCarving  4 роки тому

      Your right it is harder, and I do still use the same technique.

    Happy new year to you and your family matua campbell,seeking more of your wise council😄I’m using a 100 grit diamond grinding wheel to shape,then I use 400-800-1500-3000 diamond dremel bands to polish,
    Then I use 100-220-400-800-1000 grit sandpaper to finish,is the intensive sanding pointless?or could I cut out a couple of grits?thankyou matua Campbell

    • @CampbellCarving
      @CampbellCarving  2 роки тому +1

      You could probably cut out a few, I am currently using 120g diamond wheel, 400g wheel, 240g paper then 400g paper maybe higher but not often before polishing, bit of a matte finish but fine polishing is not my goal.

      Yes these were made from many stones when they were used as tools, and the form is used in different stones now too.
