It's amusing to me as an American living in Japan that the things these women say they envy about foreign women are things that I envy about Japanese women. They always look fashionable, beautiful, and put together. They are actually the ones with attractive features who don't need to wear makeup, yet always look lovely regardless. I guess it's just further proof that all women want what they don't have and see the grass as greener on the other side.

I think we all just admire what we don't have. I dated someone once who was from Hong Kong that complained how dark she would get in the sun, and I was like "You say that like it's a bad thing..." Meanwhile, Westerners will bake themselves in the sun for hours.

While it may seem to the Japanese that us Americans are confident and carefree, it's not entirely true. What appears as a confident, "cool clothes wearing blonde person" is some times a person who's just as nervous or worried about there looks as any other person. For all the negative stereotypes about suicide in Japan, the rate is actually higher here in the US. It's usually connected to money problems or their self worth sadly. Anyway, as an American what I envy about the Japanese is the politeness and the cleanliness. Both countries have good things to offer though!

I agree with this comment, for example, tattoos are very trendy in america. in my family specifically, the men who bucked this tattoo trend (myself included) and have no tattoos are the more successfull, emotionally stable and are able to attract many women. The men in my family with tattoos show some kind of deficiency either in personality, wealth, or if they have wealth then they dont have success with women. in summary outward displays of personality are sometimes used to cover up for some insecurities here in america.
Americans are definitely some of the most confident people on earth. If you think they're "nervous" here, you haven't been abroad much. But true about Japanese politeness and cleanliness, much to learn from that.
I´m (female) from Europe and when I first visit Tokyo two decades ago, I felt really bad about my looks. All the girls looked so pretty, delicate and cute and the men were all so handsome and confident. It´s interesting because I always felt Japanese girls don´t even have to wear make up and their hair looks always so smooth and nice. No matter what style they wear they always look pretty and on point. It appeared like everyone was always dressed for the coolest party or event. I remember me and my friends would take hours looking over magazines - fruits was basically our bible - about street fashion and idols and thinking we would never be as cool and pretty. I also admire the awareness and discipline of the Japanese people in daily life. I still use the habits I picked up back then. However, when it comes to having a fun night out with friends, going for drinks or just being carefree, talking about life and generally goofing around...I´d say westerns are often more honest and confident.

In my nation, the rise of liberalism has probably gone too far: Yes people have freedom to wear tattoos but then you see the rise in broken families and the social evils that lead from that because of the liberalism "to do as you want - no matter what others say or think". In Japan there's a cultural reason why they don't have tattoos: It's traditionally "RESERVED" for Yakuza: "A place for everything and everything in it's place" might be apt aphorism for Japanese culture. The benefits: A well-organized society. The negatives, less individual choice in public spaces. In my nation, I have often talked with Muslims who are very well educated people and are fine with other peoples' views but in their view the excess of individual freedom in the nation, they see the social consequences are negative and think the people of the culture lack guidance and are acting in a lot of cases in a self-destructive way. I think they are right about that. Japan is known for it's high standards - well there is a price to that but is it worth it? In my opinion I would say they have succeeded and should retain high standards.

Japanese are like the "ideal" nation! In my eyes. The only thing "negative" about them, is the amount of social pressure you can get from them, which can be a good thing, but when it comes to UNREALISTIC work hours, then they are basically all shooting each other in the foot. Why work 12 hours and sleep at work, when you can accomplish about same thing in 8 hours and sleep normally?
I was surprised that they mentioned facial features so often as enviable because as an american I think japanese softer features are so pretty and their hair seems soft and shiny. I agree the grass does always seem greener on the other side. As other people mentioned I do admire the politeness and cleanliness and discipline but I do think the loosness americans have can be more fun. Theres pluses and minuses in all cultures because we can be too loose and crazy too lol
As an American girl, we think that Japanese women are so beautiful! Their beautiful skin, hair, and eyes, they are just so pretty ❤ And their sweet, humble personality makes them beautiful as well💕

I’m 59, from Los Angeles and on most Takashii videos I always find it surprising and frankly odd that Japanese women … and men too, when asked about foreigners they seem to focus on facial features, or the way people look or dress, or something like the perceived confidence those people have. Things that could be considered superficial as opposed to being envious about a trait that is more sensible or grounded. I do realize he is interviewing young people mostly so the answers given will reflect that younger probably more naive attitude. I’d really like to see interviews with people at least 10 years older and see if and how those answers might contrast. In fact I’d like that on ALL of Takashii’s videos.

Well said. Unfortunately, as a young person myself, I'm confident in saying appearance plays a big role on how we see people. Appearance is how everyone sees someone at first, albeit different people will have different levels of how seriously or personal they may take it
It's not completely superficial, they appreciate their positivity and confidence as well. They probably don't approach every foreigner . They make a fair judgement based on what they see because they don't know every foreigner personally.

For example people doing whatever they want means that you may have to deal with noisy neighbors, and people not caring about what they wear means that you may see something you really dislike while doing outside activities

You ask the greatest followup questions! I feel like you already know the answer before you ask but it helps to have them explain the culture and feelings in Japan very candidly. Or even just little things like "what do you want to do in Hawaii?" Helps to give your audience a better idea of her feelings but it's also just charming, you're taking an interest in them and just genuinely want to know what they think

It's not "overly romanticise" ...it's expecting it to be French, which it was some decades ago. You can now apply that to most white countries (or some cities in those said countries). Also they are right to be shocked, when my aunt went there she was also shocked.

I love watching these videos because it also reminds me of how ok my Japanese is. I can understand most of what they're saying without subtitles, and it's surprising because I get so doubtful about my language learning. It's really interesting to hear the different opinions. I'm close friends and penpals with a few people from Japan but obviously everyone's opinion and experience is super different.
The Japanese culture has many admirable modes, to name a few: consideration of others/well-mannered, overall high hygienic awareness, great sense of humor, selfless-natured, self disciplined. The world over admires about Japan :)
the world admires the facade of japan. actual japanese culture and history is quite abusive and usually punctuated by an undertone of pure evil. you gotta remember that theyre really just chinese people who got kicked out of china, and then decided to re-create the brutal warlord system of ancient china on a tiny almost uninhabitable series of islands.
At the same time there are also so many repulsive ones, to name a few: authoritarianism, toxic work culture, sexism, lack of individual fulfillment and identity, toxic family structures...
I can't wait to visit Japan with my family - waiting for things to open up a bit more. Meanwhile we can vicariously enjoy a window into Japanese society via Takashii's channel!

I spent several vacations in Japan, 2 to 4 weeks at a time. I felt inspired every visit and I think I could travel there to the end of my days and still be amazed every time. Sadly, I have now family and kids and can't do such lengthy travelling anymore. We have quite many Japanese tourists in our little country in the heart of Europe and I hope that they feel at least half as inspired as I was in Japan!
@Chill Winston That's how I feel whenever I go to the UK. Nobody wants to talk about the obvious, but European nations also need to be for the natives or it's not the same place, I know everyone clearly wants to come and live around us, but at some point you just have to say, stop and rewind.
I spent a year in Japan teaching conversational English for NOVA. I remember how safe and friendly everyone was you could walk in the park at 3am perfectly safe. I love the country I felt like I was on vacation the whole time.
Something I envy about the Japanese is the language. I don't speak Japanese but what little I have learned from being obsessed with Japanese media, I learned that Japanese is extremely expressive in a very specific way. There are multiple ways to say the same saying most of the time, and the different saying could have a different meaning to those words, like an angry connotation or trying to imply that something is dumb. I have always found it fascinating because I do notice that even when its subtitled, the difference between Subs and Dubs can be massive. Certain scenes have an entirely different context when spoken in Japanese vs in English. I guess im gonna try to learn Japanese now!
How did trying to learn Japanese go? I'm considering doing the same since I'm working for a Japanese rooted Company in America and really want to travel to Japan. The language seems quite difficult to learn though.
@@88GTA I have been learning it for about 40 days and here is my perspective. The language is totally PHONETIC and almost completely monotonal. This actually makes speaking it rather clearly EASIER to learn then say English. Writing and reading is perhaps a little harder to much more difficult. In Japanese there are three writing systems and they are used together. It can all be quite confusing. However, I have noticed that with the little bit of time I have now practicing speaking and hearing Japanese that there are many phrases and words I hear in my favorite animes that I recognize right away and some whole simple sentences I understand. So there's that. I speak two languages and am trying to learn a couple more. I would definitely recommend you learn Japanese if your goal is to continue working for that company and travel to Japan soon. Even being a beginner speaker can be quite rewarding when you travel.
I must confess, I try to avoid emotions such as envy or jealous: Long and hard-earnt experience has taught me, time and time again, that external measure of emotion reflecting on others does not lead to improving yourself or making you feel any happier! However, I must confess, I am very, very envious of how polite and thoughtful these young ladies are in their conduct and in how they express their views with such good grace! I guess, "the shoe is on the other foot" this time around! Thank you to those interviewed, but please bear in mind how impressive it is to show such polite manners and thoughtfulness of others even while expressing a feeling that tends towards "the grass is greener on the other side"! The grass MAY be greener but I suspect it is not as tasty as it looks in all cases. Only experience can determine if the taste matches the luscious emerald sheen!

The people were relaxed and generally good-natured and seem divorced from the madness of the global world, being "far out" so to speak. It's as you say: Find what suits you and enjoy life. With that said, Japanese is interesting for a variety of reasons despite the large challenge of differences faced by being a foreigner. There's something to learn from Japanese culture I feel an that may not at first feel "suitable" however it may end up being "worthwhile"... Thank you for your pacific and kind comment. I've always wanted to go to Japan. I love the culture, the fashion, and the styles that come out of the country. they are also some of the kindest people i have ever have had the chance of meeting
It's funny seeing one of the girls saying she wishes masks weren't still so socially enforced, i always appreciated that in japan when you're sick (not even with covid, just in general) a lot of people will wear a mask so they don't spread it to others and I always wished that was commonplace in america. But I guess after covid, everyone's pretty sick of them 😂

I feel bad. This video really shows how little countries around the world know about current events of nations. I would never tell a person to go to New York now a days. Most of it is a cesspool. It is interesting how Japanese people see each other. I was recently in Bangkok and I went into a shop, which mostly had clothes for men from Japan, and as I have always loved Japanese jeans I went in. I was not disappointed - their fashion is off this world, very expensive though, compared to what I would pay for expensive jeans here in Sydney, where we have a lot of Japanese people and restaurants. I have always found the Japanese here to be super cool and very friendly, they have a unique character and their fashion is very interesting.
Every nation has amazing people, it’s how publicized the bad people are that obscures the view of the world. Interview most people on the street anywhere on Earth. America, China, Japan, etc, and you won’t be disappointed by how kind hearted most people are.

Videos like this make me realise how we just all envy and admire what we don’t have. For example, they say they love our features. In my opinion, I love Japanese features, and I think they look beautiful. A lot of Japanese people have talked about our fashion, but I love Japanese fashion and honestly think it’s more ‘put together’, especially compared to US fashion (if we put aside the younger generation).
Tfw the qt Japanese girls mention they like everything you despise about America. Disney and LA and New York and even Zac Efron are great I suppose when you have only a surface impression of them, but they're all terrible! Zac Efron is a somehow-by-the-grace-of-God successful and functioning moron, LA and New York are cesspools and Disney promotes disgusting values, but I suppose these things are at the cutting edge of English speaking countries, and there is some delay in translation or perhaps rather transliteration-- as ironic as the "trans-" prefix might be in this context. Very disheartening to see all the worst and controversial aspects of the West being idolized for all the wrong reasons, disheartening to hear SurfShark offers such a steep discount on this channel as well since they're inferior to Nordvpn. All-in-all, very discouraging, and I can only hope that qt Japanese sweet-hearts can learn to despise these things as much as the West apparently is-- based on viewership and ratings!
You know something that's interesting is that these days Japanese people seem more proud of themselves than before. I was in Japan a couple months recently and I noticed that a lot of Japanese people trying to mimic or follow western trends have decreased. I feel like the K-pop trend helped Japanese people realize that they also have the power to influence pop culture rather than be followers. These days I actually hear more Western people talk about how they envy people from Korea or Japan.
What? Japanese people being proud of themselves is literally ingrained into their brains from a young age. There's a reason Japanese television constantly airs ads and programs saying how great it is to be Japanese, saying things "Made in Japan" are so much better than anywhere else and so forth. Moreover, they've been following Korean trends for years now. Whether it's the fashion, the insane beauty standards (go look up how many Japanese women are severe underweight), the music or whatnot. It's not about japanese people realising their culture is great.
Westerners imposed western behaviour on the Japanese after WW2, many Japanese had to abandon traditional behaviour, then had to adopt western due to the GHQ the US occupation by D MacArthur, don't you know it? It's a psychological project of the Allied Force to make the Japanese adore western behaviour and to make themselves feel inferior to the Westerners. It's like the caste system the British brought in India to control India. Westerners and the US occupation defined every Japanese thing and behaviour as inferior and wrong, every western behaviour and thing as superior. To avoid being criticised and to get social status we had to adopt western. I stopped eating Anko (sweet bean) and rice because Westerners hate them, Westerners claim beans must not be sweet, that's the superior people's eating habits, many Japanese stopped living on tatami floor because westerners claim it's an inferior floor. One thing the Japanese can never abandon is the behaviour of taking off shoes inside the house. Westerners claim it's inferior behaviour, the floor must be walkable with shoes but the Japanese can never abandon it. A few other behaviours that the Japanese can never abandon is the Japanese language. D MacArthur also tried to impose the western alphabet and English as the official language and ban Japanese letters and kanji, but the Japanese could never adopt it. Westerners also criticised the behaviour of eating rice and using chopsticks but the Japanese can never abandon it although many Japanese today eat bread instead of rice.

When watching interviews with people from your own country, you can get annoyed with them because you know them too well. Watching people from other countries is refreshing, because separation allows you to view them with less judgement, and enjoy their company.
Personally, I find Japanese people (all East Asians, actually) to have the most attractive facial features. Ever since I was a child, I have loved Asian features. I always tried to befriend the Asian foreign exchange students, lol. I have been to Japan twice and will be back again this year.

I super envy the politeness of people in Japan. The bowing and using two hands to give something to someone like money is so admirable. I'm just in love with the culture surrounding Japan and how unique it is. I honestly feel like Japanese people are nicer, more attractive, and more delightful people. But that's just my opinion from what I've observed from across the world in the States. I would love to learn the language and visit Japan especially during Spring as it will be warming up from the freezing winter and not too hot from summer.
I'm not trying to be mean or anything but nicer may not be the right word. They tend to be just very polite! So they may be thinking the rudest thing ever but they don't say it outloud. I think that culturally we are expected to exude confidence, but we are just as inwardly self conscious. Even for America Ive been told that I come across as extremely confident and self assured, but Im not. I actually suffer from a form of OCD that developed around 12 years ago and being in clise proximity to people is so stressful and anxiety inducing that I rotate away from them. I spent an entire year consumed with anxiety over a 2 hour flight I had to take to visit my sister, but you would never know it if you met me in person. What Im trying to say is that the "confidence" is cultural, its not necessarily genuine.
I have noticed light skinned people trying to look more black(tanning, bleaching, weaves) and black people trying to look more light (bleaching salons etc). It's all ridiculous.
I lived in Japan for a few years and what I envy about Japanese people is all the amazing food they have everywhere the conbini is so much better then the US the season they get. Honestly just so much this really made me miss Japan!!😭😭💔
I’m not Japanese but I find this to be so tragic. Technology has made us obsessed with appearance. Japanese people are beautiful and should be proud of their features and heritage. I don’t understand this obsession with everyone wanting to be western, look western etc. Complete tragedy!
Agreed. The more “perfect” someone tries to be, the less like a person they look to me. Deformities and imperfections make us human, not a plastic doll. As long as someone is in good health, the rest doesn’t matter as much.
Honestly, it's really not an obssession and it's definitely not everyone. This was a small snippet of younger people heavily influenced by the volume of media from the west. Movies, fashion magazines, etc. Some people are attracted to what is different and unique.

I really like your channel Takashi san, it's always good to have a different perspective on things. The only thing i get from your videos is that people in Japan are mostly obsessed with america in a way that is not entirely true to reality. I wish japanese people would often realize they're beautiful in their own way, and it seems like beauty patterns are mostly related to european and north american based on the people that you have interviewed. I know I would get the same answers almost anywhere in the world, but it's weird.
It’s crazy to me that the last girl would want to go to new York. I am from the US and I hate New York so much! It’s gross especially the air.. and very noisy in the city at night. It’s hard to sleep.
Some of the answers seemed sad/lack of self-love. And a lack of experience. She said white ppl can go out without makeup bc of their "strong features" but that's not even really true. A lot more white ppl than Asian are prone to things like rosacea that they cover up w makeup. However, that is not to say that anybody, of any race, "needs" makeup to go out. Also they were envious that white ppl just naturally have blonde hair, but most white ppl past the age of adolescence who have blonde hair have achieved that w bleach/dye, same as an Asian would. I hope that ppl of all races will feel satisfied and fully self-accepting and proud of their inherent qualities. Disheartening to hear that the psychological impacts of Western colonialism and advertising/media (white features are superior/look better/etc) are still so ingrained in the minds of some today. Bc in reality, it's not even true. The natural faces/hair/bodies of every race are truly beautiful and charismatic in their own unique ways.

I believe there is also a psycho-sociological reason for what you may have observed.. women in poorer countries w less options may feel the conscious and/or subconscious societal competitive pressure to marry well. But even in more developed countries, for example.. women as well as men in Korea and maybe also Japan feel a societal pressure to take care of their appearance bc of the tight competition for jobs.. bc photos are submitted on all job applications. So it may be presumed that if many applicants are equally-qualified, the winner will end up being whomever the eye is drawn to.
After watching both videos you made recently about this theme I wonder... Why such strong ideas about foreigners being huge and beautiful... Why so many willing to visit either usa or south korea and why such close tastes 😅 yet one lady surprised me by saying france and pretty much just to blend locally and experience daily life and costumes... I really feel that way about Japan, and I probably do have some false established ideas but I wish I could talk Japanese and engage around meeting and learning more and more.
I suppose, since people live in a homogeneous society, almost any European will seem interesting to them, if only because of phenotypic diversity. I noticed that they stereotypically perceive foreigners. But when you live in a white country, in a white environment, being Asian, and most importantly, when you have culturally different (not typically Asian) ideas about aesthetics and you know what is considered attractive here, then you do not have a cult of "whiteness" as such . You do not live by stereotypes and see what is attractive and what is not.
Asian people are generally “one of many”, their homogenous ways means they share ideas in a way that individualistic westerners do not. Unfortunately, their hivemind is nonetheless influenced by western media, and their own lack of confidence means they see themselves as subordinate to westerners, the face of whom is white people.
@@thorodinson6649 might be but I never really felt that that way and it might have to do with the way I perceived things based on my own thoughts, culture, experience and community. I perceived them as better and more advanced in many ways and I'm not the only one... That whiteness you are talking about isn't somewhat tied to your own beliefs? Or is it because of industry standards and mainstream media? I've grown up with the feeling that everyone else seems to be better than us and our country, unless you are a typical USAmerica citizen as portrayed more and more as lacking notion about you and others, many seem pretty balanced and less affected by marketing. This new woke movement might have somewhat unbalanced that too with other emotions and feelings being almost forced 🤔
I think they find foreigners beautiful because they only see them on TV and actors are generally attractive. Many want to visit South Korea because it's one of the closest countries to Japan and for the USA, it's also because of the American film industry. Japanese people generally don't know much about other countries tbh. It's an island so you'd have to take a plane to go abroad and foreigners are a very small percentage of the population.
@@ryanstarlight8018 I kinda imagined something on those lines, pretty logical knowing something about Japan. They did exported a lot and exchanged with other countries for a long time but seems that it's somewhat forgotten or less important for today's generations, at least those interviewed. It's also quite normal to have some generalisation towards populations you get to cross by, there shouldn't be many ugly travellers as they often try to share a good image too 🤔
At times it can be hard living here. The language barrier can be a bit difficult to overcome. Using Google Translate app helps a bit. It'd really like to meet up with more locals. Other than that I love living here. The people here are very understanding and willing to help Americans like me. I enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.
it's crazy to hear the other side... I'm Hafu and currently visiting Japan and everytime I'm here I feel super insecure about my looks. Compared to the japanese women I feel way too tall and broad my makeup never looks as effortless as the japanese womens and i don't know what they do to their hair but even after leaving the airplane after a long haul flight, it looks SO GOOD and never greasy like mine 😭 knowing that envy or insecurity goes both ways helps a little lol :D
i find it so interesting that a lot of them answered that they envy foreigner's large eyes and angular features. personally ive always wanted softer features, i have a very sharp nose and ive always been insecure about it. i would love to look like any of the women in this video edit: OH and the fashion! i absolutely love the way these women dress, it looks so classy and put together but cute at the same time. i would love to have outfits like theirs!
Why is the western/white/European look considered most beautiful to them. Because most of the times this is when countries have been colonised by whites/Europeans, but was japanese ever colonised by the west? I’m very ignorant about Japanese history so forgive me for my ignorance. And also, why when they talk about white peopel, they don’t say “white” but use “westerner”
Yes, I found that confusing as well because I am from the west, but hispanic. Also the west does in fact include plenty of black people... so it may be to not appear racist they use the term western rather than white.
Culturally white skin, big eyes, narrow nose, tall height was always beauty standard of asians. Well, in Europe also. Regular people had to work under sun, they couldn't afford to look very white, so white skin was sign of status, wealthy and nobility. Also white people the most diverse race: they can have all colors of hair, eyes and many different shades of skin. Japanese envy this, cause they are a little bit limited in this. Though now white skin is common in Japan, South Korea and China because they don't need to work under sun anymore, they still have mostly black or brown hair and mostly brown eyes. So it has and had nothing with colonization. If you read the Chinese books, you would see that every time there is same pattern of ideal woman appearance: black hair with pale white skin, narrow face, thin waste and long legs. Pretty much what european women can have without any plastic surgery. No wonder they envy.

It's amusing to me as an American living in Japan that the things these women say they envy about foreign women are things that I envy about Japanese women. They always look fashionable, beautiful, and put together. They are actually the ones with attractive features who don't need to wear makeup, yet always look lovely regardless. I guess it's just further proof that all women want what they don't have and see the grass as greener on the other side.

While it may seem to the Japanese that us Americans are confident and carefree, it's not entirely true. What appears as a confident, "cool clothes wearing blonde person" is some times a person who's just as nervous or worried about there looks as any other person. For all the negative stereotypes about suicide in Japan, the rate is actually higher here in the US. It's usually connected to money problems or their self worth sadly.
Anyway, as an American what I envy about the Japanese is the politeness and the cleanliness. Both countries have good things to offer though!

I agree with this comment, for example, tattoos are very trendy in america. in my family specifically, the men who bucked this tattoo trend (myself included) and have no tattoos are the more successfull, emotionally stable and are able to attract many women. The men in my family with tattoos show some kind of deficiency either in personality, wealth, or if they have wealth then they dont have success with women.
in summary outward displays of personality are sometimes used to cover up for some insecurities here in america.

Americans are definitely some of the most confident people on earth. If you think they're "nervous" here, you haven't been abroad much. But true about Japanese politeness and cleanliness, much to learn from that.

I think, it's part of Asian culture. My Chinese wife is like that too. Whatever you tell her, she nods approvingly and tells you why you are right.
I´m (female) from Europe and when I first visit Tokyo two decades ago, I felt really bad about my looks. All the girls looked so pretty, delicate and cute and the men were all so handsome and confident. It´s interesting because I always felt Japanese girls don´t even have to wear make up and their hair looks always so smooth and nice. No matter what style they wear they always look pretty and on point. It appeared like everyone was always dressed for the coolest party or event. I remember me and my friends would take hours looking over magazines - fruits was basically our bible - about street fashion and idols and thinking we would never be as cool and pretty. I also admire the awareness and discipline of the Japanese people in daily life. I still use the habits I picked up back then. However, when it comes to having a fun night out with friends, going for drinks or just being carefree, talking about life and generally goofing around...I´d say westerns are often more honest and confident.

In my nation, the rise of liberalism has probably gone too far: Yes people have freedom to wear tattoos but then you see the rise in broken families and the social evils that lead from that because of the liberalism "to do as you want - no matter what others say or think".
In Japan there's a cultural reason why they don't have tattoos: It's traditionally "RESERVED" for Yakuza: "A place for everything and everything in it's place" might be apt aphorism for Japanese culture. The benefits: A well-organized society. The negatives, less individual choice in public spaces.
In my nation, I have often talked with Muslims who are very well educated people and are fine with other peoples' views but in their view the excess of individual freedom in the nation, they see the social consequences are negative and think the people of the culture lack guidance and are acting in a lot of cases in a self-destructive way. I think they are right about that.
Japan is known for it's high standards - well there is a price to that but is it worth it? In my opinion I would say they have succeeded and should retain high standards.

Japanese are like the "ideal" nation! In my eyes. The only thing "negative" about them, is the amount of social pressure you can get from them, which can be a good thing, but when it comes to UNREALISTIC work hours, then they are basically all shooting each other in the foot. Why work 12 hours and sleep at work, when you can accomplish about same thing in 8 hours and sleep normally?
I was surprised that they mentioned facial features so often as enviable because as an american I think japanese softer features are so pretty and their hair seems soft and shiny. As other people mentioned I do admire the politeness and cleanliness and discipline but I do think the loosness americans have can be more fun. Theres pluses and minuses in all cultures because we can be too loose and crazy too lol

I’m 59, from Los Angeles and on most Takashii videos I always find it surprising and frankly odd that Japanese women … and men too, when asked about foreigners they seem to focus on facial features, or the way people look or dress, or something like the perceived confidence those people have. Things that could be considered superficial as opposed to being envious about a trait that is more sensible or grounded. I do realize he is interviewing young people mostly so the answers given will reflect that younger probably more naive attitude. I’d really like to see interviews with people at least 10 years older and see if and how those answers might contrast. In fact I’d like that on ALL of Takashii’s videos.

Well said. Unfortunately, as a young person myself, I'm confident in saying appearance plays a big role on how we see people. Appearance is how everyone sees someone at first, albeit different people will have different levels of how seriously or personal they may take it
It's not completely superficial, they appreciate their positivity and confidence as well. They probably don't approach every foreigner . They make a fair judgement based on what they see because they don't know every foreigner personally.
Both Japan and Korea are very fixated on looks, it's part of their culture (to a certain degree in all cultures, but very strong on those)

Most of the things the interviewed envy about foreign countries are reasons I prefer Japan. For example people doing whatever they want means that you may have to deal with noisy neighbors, and people not caring about what they wear means that you may see something you really dislike while doing outside activities

Or even just little things like "what do you want to do in Hawaii?" Helps to give your audience a better idea of her feelings but it's also just charming, you're taking an interest in them and just genuinely want to know what they think

3:36 Fun fact: There’s actually a term called “Paris Syndrome” which is a culture shock that occurs primarily with Japanese people who overly romanticize Paris, and are then terribly disappointed upon arrival.
It's not "overly romanticise" ...it's expecting it to be French, which it was some decades ago. You can now apply that to most white countries (or some cities in those said countries). Also they are right to be shocked, when my aunt went there she was also shocked.
My co-worker was similarly eager to visit France. He spent a day and went straight to Spain, saying *never again!*

I love watching these videos because it also reminds me of how ok my Japanese is. I can understand most of what they're saying without subtitles, and it's surprising because I get so doubtful about my language learning. It's really interesting to hear the different opinions. I'm close friends and penpals with a few people from Japan but obviously everyone's opinion and experience is super different.

At the same time there are also so many repulsive ones, to name a few: authoritarianism, toxic work culture, sexism, lack of individual fulfillment and identity, toxic family structures...

I spent several vacations in Japan, 2 to 4 weeks at a time. I felt inspired every visit and I think I could travel there to the end of my days and still be amazed every time. Sadly, I have now family and kids and can't do such lengthy travelling anymore. We have quite many Japanese tourists in our little country in the heart of Europe and I hope that they feel at least half as inspired as I was in Japan!

@Chill Winston That's how I feel whenever I go to the UK. Nobody wants to talk about the obvious, but European nations also need to be for the natives or it's not the same place, I know everyone clearly wants to come and live around us, but at some point you just have to say, stop and rewind.
I spent a year in Japan teaching conversational English for NOVA. I remember how safe and friendly everyone was you could walk in the park at 3am perfectly safe. I love the country I felt like I was on vacation the whole time.

Something I envy about the Japanese is the language. I don't speak Japanese but what little I have learned from being obsessed with Japanese media, I learned that Japanese is extremely expressive in a very specific way. There are multiple ways to say the same saying most of the time, and the different saying could have a different meaning to those words, like an angry connotation or trying to imply that something is dumb. I have always found it fascinating because I do notice that even when its subtitled, the difference between Subs and Dubs can be massive. Certain scenes have an entirely different context when spoken in Japanese vs in English. I guess im gonna try to learn Japanese now!
How did trying to learn Japanese go? I'm considering doing the same since I'm working for a Japanese rooted Company in America and really want to travel to Japan. The language seems quite difficult to learn though.
@@88GTA I have been learning it for about 40 days and here is my perspective. The language is totally PHONETIC and almost completely monotonal. This actually makes speaking it rather clearly EASIER to learn then say English. Writing and reading is perhaps a little harder to much more difficult. In Japanese there are three writing systems and they are used together. It can all be quite confusing. However, I have noticed that with the little bit of time I have now practicing speaking and hearing Japanese that there are many phrases and words I hear in my favorite animes that I recognize right away and some whole simple sentences I understand. So there's that. I speak two languages and am trying to learn a couple more. I would definitely recommend you learn Japanese if your goal is to continue working for that company and travel to Japan soon. Even being a beginner speaker can be quite rewarding when you travel.
I must confess, I try to avoid emotions such as envy or jealous: Long and hard-earnt experience has taught me, time and time again, that external measure of emotion reflecting on others does not lead to improving yourself or making you feel any happier!
However, I must confess, I am very, very envious of how polite and thoughtful these young ladies are in their conduct and in how they express their views with such good grace! I guess, "the shoe is on the other foot" this time around!
Thank you to those interviewed, but please bear in mind how impressive it is to show such polite manners and thoughtfulness of others even while expressing a feeling that tends towards "the grass is greener on the other side"!

With that said, Japanese is interesting for a variety of reasons despite the large challenge of differences faced by being a foreigner. There's something to learn from Japanese culture I feel an that may not at first feel "suitable" however it may end up being "worthwhile"...

It's funny seeing one of the girls saying she wishes masks weren't still so socially enforced, i always appreciated that in japan when you're sick (not even with covid, just in general) a lot of people will wear a mask so they don't spread it to others and I always wished that was commonplace in america. It is interesting how Japanese people see each other. I was recently in Bangkok and I went into a shop, which mostly had clothes for men from Japan, and as I have always loved Japanese jeans I went in. I was not disappointed - their fashion is off this world, very expensive though, compared to what I would pay for expensive jeans here in Sydney, where we have a lot of Japanese people and restaurants. I have always found the Japanese here to be super cool and very friendly, they have a unique character and their fashion is very interesting.
I think I have lost my heart with the girls with glasses.

Videos like this make me realise how we just all envy and admire what we don’t have. For example, they say they love our features. In my opinion, I love Japanese features, and I think they look beautiful. A lot of Japanese people have talked about our fashion, but I love Japanese fashion and honestly think it’s more ‘put together’, especially compared to US fashion (if we put aside the younger generation).
Tfw the qt Japanese girls mention they like everything you despise about America. Disney and LA and New York and even Zac Efron are great I suppose when you have only a surface impression of them, but they're all terrible! Zac Efron is a somehow-by-the-grace-of-God successful and functioning moron, LA and New York are cesspools and Disney promotes disgusting values, but I suppose these things are at the cutting edge of English speaking countries, and there is some delay in translation or perhaps rather transliteration-- as ironic as the "trans-" prefix might be in this context. Very disheartening to see all the worst and controversial aspects of the West being idolized for all the wrong reasons, disheartening to hear SurfShark offers such a steep discount on this channel as well since they're inferior to Nordvpn. You know something that's interesting is that these days Japanese people seem more proud of themselves than before. I was in Japan a couple months recently and I noticed that a lot of Japanese people trying to mimic or follow western trends have decreased. I feel like the K-pop trend helped Japanese people realize that they also have the power to influence pop culture rather than be followers. These days I actually hear more Western people talk about how they envy people from Korea or Japan.
What? Japanese people being proud of themselves is literally ingrained into their brains from a young age. There's a reason Japanese television constantly airs ads and programs saying how great it is to be Japanese, saying things "Made in Japan" are so much better than anywhere else and so forth.
Moreover, they've been following Korean trends for years now. Whether it's the fashion, the insane beauty standards (go look up how many Japanese women are severe underweight), the music or whatnot. It's not about japanese people realising their culture is great.
Westerners imposed western behaviour on the Japanese after WW2, many Japanese had to abandon traditional behaviour, then had to adopt western due to the GHQ the US occupation by D MacArthur, don't you know it? It's a psychological project of the Allied Force to make the Japanese adore western behaviour and to make themselves feel inferior to the Westerners. It's like the caste system the British brought in India to control India. Westerners and the US occupation defined every Japanese thing and behaviour as inferior and wrong, every western behaviour and thing as superior. To avoid being criticised and to get social status we had to adopt western. I stopped eating Anko (sweet bean) and rice because Westerners hate them, Westerners claim beans must not be sweet, that's the superior people's eating habits, many Japanese stopped living on tatami floor because westerners claim it's an inferior floor. One thing the Japanese can never abandon is the behaviour of taking off shoes inside the house. Westerners claim it's inferior behaviour, the floor must be walkable with shoes but the Japanese can never abandon it. A few other behaviours that the Japanese can never abandon is the Japanese language. D MacArthur also tried to impose the western alphabet and English as the official language and ban Japanese letters and kanji, but the Japanese could never adopt it. Westerners also criticised the behaviour of eating rice and using chopsticks but the Japanese can never abandon it although many Japanese today eat bread instead of rice.

To make the Japanese have an inferiority complex is the major project of the US to occupy and control Japan in the postwar period. "Feel inferior and guilty project". The GHQ of the US banned many books and controlled school textbooks to teach kids how inferior the Japanese are, Japanese teacher organization (Nikkyoso) is the ideal one that is still following the "feel inferior and guilty project" of the GHQ today and then defining the Japanese as inferior war criminals, forcing the Japanese to follow the constitution that the US imposed on the Japanese and is prohibiting to have its own armed force.

When watching interviews with people from your own country, you can get annoyed with them because you know them too well. Watching people from other countries is refreshing, because separation allows you to view them with less judgement, and enjoy their company.
Personally, I find Japanese people (all East Asians, actually) to have the most attractive facial features. Ever since I was a child, I have loved Asian features.
I always tried to befriend the Asian foreign exchange students, lol. I have been to Japan twice and will be back again this year.

I super envy the politeness of people in Japan. The bowing and using two hands to give something to someone like money is so admirable. I'm just in love with the culture surrounding Japan and how unique it is. I honestly feel like Japanese people are nicer, more attractive, and more delightful people. But that's just my opinion from what I've observed from across the world in the States. I would love to learn the language and visit Japan especially during Spring as it will be warming up from the freezing winter and not too hot from summer.
I'm not trying to be mean or anything but nicer may not be the right word. They tend to be just very polite! So they may be thinking the rudest thing ever but they don't say it outloud. Idk if this is true or not but they don't rlly like foreigners unless u go to somewhere like Tokyo (very popular tourist area)

I think that culturally we are expected to exude confidence, but we are just as inwardly self conscious. Even for America Ive been told that I come across as extremely confident and self assured, but Im not. I actually suffer from a form of OCD that developed around 12 years ago and being in clise proximity to people is so stressful and anxiety inducing that I rotate away from them. I spent an entire year consumed with anxiety over a 2 hour flight I had to take to visit my sister, but you would never know it if you met me in person.
What Im trying to say is that the "confidence" is cultural, its not necessarily genuine.
I have noticed light skinned people trying to look more black(tanning, bleaching, weaves) and black people trying to look more light (bleaching salons etc). It's all ridiculous.

Agreed. The more “perfect” someone tries to be, the less like a person they look to me. Deformities and imperfections make us human, not a plastic doll. As long as someone is in good health, the rest doesn’t matter as much.

Honestly, it's really not an obssession and it's definitely not everyone. This was a small snippet of younger people heavily influenced by the volume of media from the west. Movies, fashion magazines, etc. Some people are attracted to what is different and unique.
As a westerner, I think they are all very pretty and I would not change anything about their appearance.

I really like your channel Takashi san, it's always good to have a different perspective on things. The only thing i get from your videos is that people in Japan are mostly obsessed with america in a way that is not entirely true to reality. I wish japanese people would often realize they're beautiful in their own way, and it seems like beauty patterns are mostly related to european and north american based on the people that you have interviewed. I know I would get the same answers almost anywhere in the world, but it's weird.
It’s crazy to me that the last girl would want to go to new York. I am from the US and I hate New York so much! It’s gross especially the air.. and very noisy in the city at night. It’s hard to sleep.
Some of the answers seemed sad/lack of self-love. And a lack of experience. She said white ppl can go out without makeup bc of their "strong features" but that's not even really true. A lot more white ppl than Asian are prone to things like rosacea that they cover up w makeup. However, that is not to say that anybody, of any race, "needs" makeup to go out.
Also they were envious that white ppl just naturally have blonde hair, but most white ppl past the age of adolescence who have blonde hair have achieved that w bleach/dye, same as an Asian would.
I hope that ppl of all races will feel satisfied and fully self-accepting and proud of their inherent qualities. Disheartening to hear that the psychological impacts of Western colonialism and advertising/media (white features are superior/look better/etc) are still so ingrained in the minds of some today. Bc in reality, it's not even true. The natural faces/hair/bodies of every race are truly beautiful and charismatic in their own unique ways.

I believe there is also a psycho-sociological reason for what you may have observed.. women in poorer countries w less options may feel the conscious and/or subconscious societal competitive pressure to marry well.
But even in more developed countries, for example.. women as well as men in Korea and maybe also Japan feel a societal pressure to take care of their appearance bc of the tight competition for jobs.. bc photos are submitted on all job applications. So it may be presumed that if many applicants are equally-qualified, the winner will end up being whomever the eye is drawn to.

After watching both videos you made recently about this theme I wonder... Why such strong ideas about foreigners being huge and beautiful... Why so many willing to visit either usa or south korea and why such close tastes 😅 yet one lady surprised me by saying france and pretty much just to blend locally and experience daily life and costumes... I really feel that way about Japan, and I probably do have some false established ideas but I wish I could talk Japanese and engage around meeting and learning more and more.
I suppose, since people live in a homogeneous society, almost any European will seem interesting to them, if only because of phenotypic diversity. I noticed that they stereotypically perceive foreigners. But when you live in a white country, in a white environment, being Asian, and most importantly, when you have culturally different (not typically Asian) ideas about aesthetics and you know what is considered attractive here, then you do not have a cult of "whiteness" as such . You do not live by stereotypes and see what is attractive and what is not.
Asian people are generally “one of many”, their homogenous ways means they share ideas in a way that individualistic westerners do not. Unfortunately, their hivemind is nonetheless influenced by western media, and their own lack of confidence means they see themselves as subordinate to westerners, the face of whom is white people.

I perceived them as better and more advanced in many ways and I'm not the only one... That whiteness you are talking about isn't somewhat tied to your own beliefs? Or is it because of industry standards and mainstream media? I've grown up with the feeling that everyone else seems to be better than us and our country, unless you are a typical USAmerica citizen as portrayed more and more as lacking notion about you and others, many seem pretty balanced and less affected by marketing. This new woke movement might have somewhat unbalanced that too with other emotions and feelings being almost forced 🤔
I think they find foreigners beautiful because they only see them on TV and actors are generally attractive. Many want to visit South Korea because it's one of the closest countries to Japan and for the USA, it's also because of the American film industry. Japanese people generally don't know much about other countries tbh. It's an island so you'd have to take a plane to go abroad and foreigners are a very small percentage of the population.

They did exported a lot and exchanged with other countries for a long time but seems that it's somewhat forgotten or less important for today's generations, at least those interviewed. It's also quite normal to have some generalisation towards populations you get to cross by, there shouldn't be many ugly travellers as they often try to share a good image too 🤔
At times it can be hard living here. The language barrier can be a bit difficult to overcome. Using Google Translate app helps a bit. It'd really like to meet up with more locals. Other than that I love living here. The people here are very understanding and willing to help Americans like me. I enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.

it's crazy to hear the other side... I'm Hafu and currently visiting Japan and everytime I'm here I feel super insecure about my looks. Compared to the japanese women I feel way too tall and broad my makeup never looks as effortless as the japanese womens and i don't know what they do to their hair but even after leaving the airplane after a long haul flight, it looks SO GOOD and never greasy like mine 😭

Why is the western/white/European look considered most beautiful to them. Because most of the times this is when countries have been colonised by whites/Europeans, but was japanese ever colonised by the west? I’m very ignorant about Japanese history so forgive me for my ignorance.

Yes, I found that confusing as well because I am from the west, but hispanic. Also the west does in fact include plenty of black people... so it may be to not appear racist they use the term western rather than white.

Culturally white skin, big eyes, narrow nose, tall height was always beauty standard of asians. Well, in Europe also. Regular people had to work under sun, they couldn't afford to look very white, so white skin was sign of status, wealthy and nobility. Also white people the most diverse race: they can have all colors of hair, eyes and many different shades of skin. Japanese envy this, cause they are a little bit limited in this. Though now white skin is common in Japan, South Korea and China because they don't need to work under sun anymore, they still have mostly black or brown hair and mostly brown eyes. So it has and had nothing with colonization. If you read the Chinese books, you would see that every time there is same pattern of ideal woman appearance: black hair with pale white skin, narrow face, thin waste and long legs. Pretty much what european women can have without any plastic surgery. No wonder they envy.
