My knitting buddy and i were just talking about what a good idea it would be to have a podcast about all the knitted garments you love and wear on parade. Thanks for this. It would also be good to have a parade of garments that didn't turn out so well and why. (If you have them) Eg, yarns that stretch and grow after knitting. Knitting techniques that twist while knitting or don't show the stitch definition. Garments that you have made with yarns not recommended for a pattern etc. Just food for thought,

I learnt to knit when I was 8 but didn’t knit seriously until I was in my 20s back in the 80s and all the pattern myself and my mother knit were bottom up in pieces, I still have those patterns and I still knit them. I have recently learnt top down and love it and also now I’m learning colour work and I get so excited

My mother's been a fan of your podcasts for a super long time and I just want to say that *this* video in particular is what inspired me to begin my own knitting adventure. .> But DEFINITELY the Easy V or Gib I sweater for myself!
Both of you have inspired me to sit down and make this happen and I've been having a ball. Thank you so much!
I can think of two advantages with bottom up knitting and they are not design-related:
1. With stranded round yokes you do the boring part first (first thing: dutiful 30 rows of ribbing).
2. With fair isle your stitches are smiling, not sulking.
And loosing it with your first steeking is totally healthy and normal. ;)
A super episode, you gave experienced and inexperienced knitters lots to think about. I would love to see a similar episode that does an in-depth feature on sock knitting - your thoughts on using sock yarn versus ordinary fingering; top down vs for up; types of cast ons; colour work socks vs plain stocking stitch; getting a good fit......The list is endless.
We completely agree!! So much to talk about with socks too 😀

Oh, and I just made a 2024 goal to knit two sweaters for myself (which I've never done before), so this show about your sweater knitting has been perfect for me!
So glad you mentioned the Cozy Classic Raglan. I’ve knit 5, and they all look different. There will be more (already have yarn for a couple). Great pattern for all the reasons you said.

The Khulman’s are of German heritage..they are the sweetest couple…I serve them at the restaurant I work at all the time. Dieter has amazing stories of when he was a boy before he came to Canada.
As to bottom up, Shetlanders like it because they say decreases are prettier in color work than increases. I do a provisional sleeve tube, like 2 inches, and then add it to your sweater. Then knit the sleeves down so they’re the right length.
Jodi! Traci’s first sweater fits you beautifully. Maybe it’s a hot sweater but one to grab and put on going to the mailbox, etc.
I love watching you two and this is my all time favorite episode! I loved seeing all your beautiful sweaters again, it was a great trip down memory lane for me too as I knit a few of the patterns after seeing them on your podcast through the years! Gorgeous knits and the best chit chat❤️❤️❤️

When did top down sweaters come to be? The only way we made sweaters in the 1980s and earlier were seamed sweaters. I returned to knitting about 5 years ago. Now there’s Ravelry, DK weight yarn, and other new things. Love how knitting has evolved.
I’m planning to get a little deeper into garments in 2024. Thanks for increasing my favourites bundle in Rav 😂 That After the Storm cardigan is at the top of my list

This may be my favorite episode. I was taking notes on sweaters, took me forever to watch because I started and stopped, went to Ravelry to look up the sweater, etc. I was thinking about the Cozy Classic Raglan neck issues. I have never made it but I would think if you just start on the body at the neck and come back at the end and pick up for the neck, it would give the neck more structure and might work better. Also, I have knitted the No Frills Pullover by PetiteKnit which is almost identical and have never had an issue with the neck. I would be curious how the numbers at the neck compare. Canmore is SO tempting.

Loved all the colorwork jumpers. There are a lot of allover colorwork that are drop shoulders, where you cut a steek for the arms. Many Shetland and norwegian patterns are shaped that way, and the fit and structural integrity are amazing. Also, the best thing about bottom up is that the sleeves are swatches!!

When my cousin got too ill to continue to teach me to knit past garter and then, passed away... well, being an only child, I lost a sister in her and I wanted to cherish her by learning to knit. You Tube University, as we call it, helped. It is because of you two... that I am with happy tears at times learning. I am going through your videos with my coffee every time I have a break and that is how you introduced me to The Cozy Classic Raglan by Jessie Mae. It made me a confident knitter, brave enough to be bad at something new. You both give such joy and inspiration, laughter and vast knowledge on all the things that make my heart sing. Thank you Tracie and Jodi! This episode is epic and so full of great information that I will be watching it multiple times!!! In the early days when you were mostly about socks I could not fathom how or why anyone would attempt such a, in my mind, tedious task. Well, I eventually got sucked into the sock knitting vortex and knit dozens of socks during Covid. Similarly, when you jumped on the sweater bandwagon, I asked myself, why? Reluctantly I jumped in too, holding my breath as I could see so many ways this could go sideways. I've knit a handful of sweaters, some I love, some not so much. Wow everything now-a-days related to or adjacent to yarn is ridiculously astronomical all the way down to row counters & stitch markers. It’s like jumping into a lake filled with leaches 🙄
I’ve been crocheting & knitting over 30 years and yes I’m an absolute yarn & tool snob so for me to make a post says alot.
But try to get someone to pay a fair price for a finished item and where’d they go. I’m an absolute selfish knitter for years now, everything is so saturated now with everyone wanting to sell ya something.
I would have considered attending the retreat but not for a few days at this price point.

Tracie, I made the Cozy Classic and from your videos I was worried about the neckline being too big. So I used Andrea Mowry’s video for the tubular cast on and went with US3 needle and cast on 112 sts for the L size. It ended up being perfect! No bra straps showing at all! 👍😊

Very happy for anyone attending your retreat. I’d love to see the beauty of Alberta. In late August we drove through Jasper National Park on our way back to the US. Had hoped to see the ice fields and all the beauty along the drive. We saw wildfire smoke and rain. Sometimes you’re lucky and sometimes you’re unlucky.

Can you consider doing a yarn education, meaning what different yarns will do as you knit with it and the types of projects that different yarn contents are best suited for? I made the mistake of doing a sweater in alpaca and it was very expensive and ended up being way too long and I never wear it. I know it’s a learning process, and wish I knew more, and sooner in my yarn learning journey.

This was a fabulous podcast. I hope you will do more of this, focusing on one topic.
I've been knitting since I was 5 years old. I've knitted a ton of bottom up as well as top down sweaters. Frankly, I've never seen a difference. I always try my sweaters on as I'm knitting and everything you said about top down sweaters also applies to bottom up sweaters in my experience. 😉 I don't mind sweaters that are knit in pieces, they really do have better structure and I love doing the mattress stitch.
I’ve been inspired by so much of what you bring to your shows. I learn so much! My daughter lives in Edmonton and I can’t wait to come back to Edmonton to finally check out the Yarn Store there! Thank you so much for your passion and delight!!!

Pieced sweaters are there was when I started knitting. They can be a bugger to fit. Top down allows you the make sure it fits as you go. Loved the podcast

Your comments about not liking to knit a first sweater that was pieced made me laugh. The very first knitting class I took the instructor had us make a sweater for ourselves. It was the 1980s and I used worsted yarn on big needles. Of course it as pieced but then most sweaters were pieced back then. And, we had to make it for ourselves, not a boyfriend. Her theory with a pieced sweater was: start with the back, get good at stockinette stitch, by the time you get to the front you will be ready for something different and fun. I choose a sweater with a big cable in the front. It was a great way to learn how to knit. I got comfortable with so many techniques right from the start.
I can’t begin to tell you how much I LOVED this podcast!!! Thank you so much for giving us this in depth tutorial…and yes it definitely was a tutorial! You provided so much education based on your personal knitting experiences. This will be saved as one of the best resources in my library…you are both incredibly talented and so generous…👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤗🧶
I did so many shawls and cowls until I jumped into my first sweater. So what did I choose? Navelli…..bottom up, bottom colorwork, fingering, handdyed yarn (that I didn’t do helical). Four things I now avoid. I blindly entered the adventure. I do wear the sweater.
I learned to knit as a child almost 50 years ago and pieced bottom up sweaters were common then so that’s how I learned. I was intimidated by top down construction.

It took me awhile to get through this entire episode, but I LOVED it! Jodi, I can't believe your first sweater is so beautiful! I think there is something about new knitters who take on something difficult without realizing it is difficult. I do love a pieced sweater, but that is not my first choice. I am finding from knitting over 20 sweaters for myself what style I like as well as fit. You have so many good tips here! I just bought the Cozy Classic Raglan pattern! How about an episode with sweater mistakes you made. I have plenty of those that I no longer have--sweaters with too deep a V or too cropped or the wrong yarn, etc. It's not the pattern, but my choices. Love you guys!!
For Cozy Classic neck: I cast on the neckline with the stockinette, skipping the ribbing all together. Then I pick up and put on the neck and bind off tubular. I can control the fit better.
