Now if only they would make ultimate generals ww1 and ww2

Historic note:. It's only considered a Confederate victory because Nathan Bedford was able to push through and cross the Tenn. river, which was what the Union was trying to stop

That was a nice job and the strategy worked well. I actually found that the center and right fortifications worked really well and kept his guys in the woods and the skirmishers and cavalry in the southeast at bay. On the left flank I defended in the forest along the river line and just decimated his forces as they tried to cross the river. And when my reinforcements arrived it was mop up time.
I'm playing on Major General and he was a little weaker (15k vs 16.5k on legendary) but I'm not sure that would have mattered.
For Stones River I went all in on holding the southern forest (42 20 pdrs and 28 24 pound howitzers along with every infantry brigade I could spare) . It was a very near thing but eventually I broke him. He had 58k to my 42k troops (I stopped adding more because he was just scaling up). I'm doubtful it would work on Legendary . . . if he had any extra troops to push in the other parts of the line everything would have collapsed.
Once the line held and his infantry was routed my cavalry was able to roam around picking off guns, supplies, and routed brigades. Finished taking just over 10,000 casualties and inflicted over 42,000. The final day was quite funny as we sat in the fortification waiting to see if any of his remaining 7,000 men would show up . . . they never did, I don't blame them!

Extremely well done and there is no way you could of dealt with those cavalry.

You got a good result, I usually fight them in the woods just to the southwest of the objective. You can catch some of their bigger brigades in that river before they get to the area of the objective.

That's where I usually fight too. Decided to try something different this time.

So as a new player which campaign you recommend 1st southern or northern

Northern. You get more money, troops and better weapons.

Def.. Union.... even as a brand new player, you need to perform abysmally bad to not have enough of manpower and weapons

Stones River can go either way. You can fight him for a long time and inflict heavy losses in the southern part of the field and then retreat north, or you can just retreat and fight the last stage on the Nashville Pike and fight a shorter battle. I usually can't stand abandoning all those woods without a fight, but that Nashville Pike position is damn strong and you get to fight in it for 2 days.

good use of woods! tough battle
i normally do a different strategy i send everyone south to where the confeds have troops that spawn and i sit there and wait for them then i kill them off in the bottom left corner... with about 1.5 hours to go im at the tree line near the objective and the confeds are all there in the woods so you can lure them out with skirmishers they will charge and then fire on them with all brigades... when the new troops arrive in the north i swing them around the left side of the map and kill off any arty i can find and then link up witht eh southern forces on the left flank and push for the objective . i had a little less casualties around 2800 thsi battle is hard to do it in less unless you dont engage and then rush for objective but you get like no xp doing things that way
