  • Bethel Evangelist Explains The Gospel - Remnant Interview With Tom Crandall
I am often told that Bethel Church in Redding California does not preach the TRUE Gospel. But is that true? If you watch Remnant you will know that we are not Bethel fan boys. We have been rightfully critical of the "physics of heaven", the teachings they sell of Bob Jones traveling to heaven, and the frequent retractions. Yet I have not seen anything out of Bethel that would suggest they preach a "different gospel". That is a hefty claim we are unwilling to endorse.
Well ,while we were at the send conference we bumped into this guy eating a philly cheesesteak sandwich. Turns out, he is the evangelist on staff at Bethel Redding. With literally no prep-time Tom swallows the rest of his philly cheesesteak and heads down to Kansas City Chiefs locker room to film a podcast with two guys he has never met and never heard of. The following footage is from sed interview.

I want everyone watching this video to notice what Josh and Michael are doing here regarding being peaceful and loving. I have had these kind of conversations with folks who I consider brothers and even sisters but I lovingly disagree with. I can tell that some of the things he is saying are hard for them to chew on but keep they keep silent to be peaceful. Acknowledging what he is saying to show respect. Some folks you talk to about things like this you know that you cannot debate them, but pray for them. Well done brothers.

Very good presentation of the Gospel! I was honestly expecting less. I hope this message is preached all throughout Bethel's ministry. I am still concerned with other parts of Bethel and would disagree with some points after his presentation of the Gospel, but thank you for these interviews which are clarifying a lot! Also thank you for the healthy conversation through doctrinal differences.

Another point to ponder, the serpent was from Genesis onwards a symbol of sin and was cursed by God. Jesus was lifted up on the cross, became sin for the world and was cursed, just as it was depicted in the symbolic representation of salvation in the wilderness. Amazing.

Mixed thoughts on this. I'd agree with him on sanctification and victory over sin....any modern theologian worth reading doesn't interpreted Romans 7 as Pauls experience. (Ask Craig Keener and Ben Werthigtom Iii)
But I think his explanation of the gospel is the common free Grace view..where the gospel is the atonement and faith is accepting what Jesus did for us.
That kind of preaching doesn't lead automatically into discipleship, just an assurance of sins forgiven. My reading of Luther and Calvin and some modern Theologians I think it's an inadequate gospel.. Rather we trust personally on Jesus because he died and rose again. It's not just trusting what he did was enough, but trusting him. Lordship salvation attempted to provide that but focused upon repentence and surrender too much and took the focus away from the person of Jesus.
We need remember Jesus is alive and we can trust him personally as we trust other people..
This is the emphasis of the late Dallas Willard and somewhat like Scot McKnight it's just lacking in most churches.

One of the best explanations of the Gospel I've heard. Bethel gets the Good News. The bad news they don't get. Beware the 3 leavens which will steal your reward:
    1. that of the Pharisees, formalism, legalism, conservativism, pride in righteousness, showmanship, domination of the laity, propaganda vs honesty, hiding vs transparency of conduct, hypocrisy, etc.
    2. that of the Sadducees, excess of worldliness, faithlessness, liberalism, limitation of the supernatural, focusing on here and now rewards rather than eternal
    3. that of Herod (and by extension the Herodians), rightful but corrupt leadership, liscenciousness, cooperation with worldly power
"A little leaven infects the lump."
Coach Johnson needs to teach this little kingdom principle. A good defense is a the best offense. No, I got that wrong. Whatever.

36:00 James is talking about the inner battle of our own thoughts and desires pulling us away.
Paul is talking to the Ephesians about the attack from the enemy shooting the firey darts into your mind that you would never think of on your own....that would be the random crazy thoughts that run through everyone's head and makes you think "where did that come from?"
Sometimes our problems are because of our own stupid desires, sometimes it's a spiritual attack, and if we don't take those thoughts captive, whether from inside or outside, it becomes ba stronghold in our life.

And if they are harming/leading any others astray, then there are millstones waiting for them. I don't go to Bethel but know what they teach and espouse. That is between them and God. @Josh Jillins I beleive Hebrews makes it clear why we don't continue to preach the "salvific" portion of the gospel over and over to the same group of people.
      Hebrews 6:1-2
[1]Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
[2]Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
We should be going on on to teaching and preaching the "strong meat" of the Word that we find in
      Hebrews 5:14
[14]But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

      It's always about believers.
It's all a warning to continue in the faith

[4]For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
[5]And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
[6]If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
      Hebrews 10:39

If you had 1 verse from Hebrews where the author makes it clear that he is addressing non believing Jews that be appreciated 👍
Here is a good breakdown of Hebrews 6:4-6 It might help clarify who the Author is addressing.
      Hebrews 6:4-6
      New King James Version
For it is impossible for those who were once ENLIGHTENED, and have TASTED the heavenly gift, and have become PARTAKERS of the Holy Spirit,
and have TASTED the good word of God and the powers of the age to come
if they FALL AWAY, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame.
      ENLIGHTENED
Cognate: 5461 phōtízō (from 5457 /phṓs, "light") - properly, enlighten; (figuratively) GOD SHARING HIS LIFE, EXPOSING AND OVERCOMING DARKNESS - like the ignorance (prejudice) caused by sin. See 5457 (phōs).
      TASTED
      Strong's Exhaustive Concordance
      eat, taste.
A primary verb; to taste; by implication, to eat; figuratively, to experience (good or ill) -- eat, taste.
      2. to taste, i. e. perceive the flavor of, partake of, enjoy:
      PARTAKERS
1096 gínomai - properly, to emerge, become, transitioning from one point (realm, condition) to another. 1096 (gínomai) fundamentally means "become" (becoming, became) so it is not an exact equivalent to the ordinary equative verb "to be" (is, was, will be) as with 1510 /eimí (1511 /eínai, 2258 /ēn).
1096 (ginomai) means "to become, and signifies a CHANGE OF CONDITION of condition, STATE or PLACE" (Vine, Unger, White, NT, 109).
      FALL AWAY
      HELPS Word-studies
3895 parapíptō (from 3844 /pará, "from close-beside" and 4098 /píptō, "to fall") - properly, fall away, after being close-beside; to defect (abandon).
3895 /parapíptō ("fallen from a close position") REFERS TO A CLOSE-FOLLOWER OF CHRIST WHO BECOMES A DEFECTOR. IT SUGGESTS THAT THIS PERSON (at least at one time) WAS A BELIEVER (note the para). 3895 (parapíptō) is only used in Heb 6:6.
      3895. parapiptó
      Strong's Exhaustive Concordance
      FALL AWAY
From para and pipto; to fall aside, i.e. (figuratively) to apostatize -- fall away.

Absolute sanctification is absolutely available for the here and now.
    1 Thessalonians 5:23-24
[23]And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
[24]Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.
Do you not believe all things are possible with God?
Do you think your flesh "old nature" is a "super power" that is greater than the Power that lives within the true beleiver?
    Romans 8:11-13
[11]But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
[12]Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
[13]For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
Too many "pastors" and "teachers" have no grid for this clear biblical truth WHY?
Because they are allowing thier "experience" or lack thereof to dictate thier theology rather than the Holy Word of God.
    Be blessed all 🙌

Good witness, brother Sean. "How much more shall he cleanse our consciences from dead works to serve the living God?"
My two cents: the Holiness movement, which came out of the Methodist movement, stressed this "perfection" of the saints, but they knew they were missing something. Eventually, in several different places, the idea of Spirit baptism became to be believed, and this morphs into the Pentecostal movement. This history is interesting, and by no means entirely pure of motive or deed, while being genuine in supernatural occurrences.
Holiness eventually drops out of Pentecostalism and we get a spin off into Charismatic neo-Pentecostalism. People got tired seeking the big signs and personal sanctification, and settled for tongues, emotionalism along with lots of praise in the old camp-meeting tradition, and lots of teaching of the Bible in the old Reformed tradition. This becomes new Evangelical orthodoxy, and here's where we get our mega-churches of today.

I'm sorry but can I humbly point out that this young man is mistaken when he said Cornelius did not hear the message of salvation. Acts 10:34-48 outlines what Peter said and in verse 43 he plainly says that whoever believes in Jesus will receive remission of sins. Cornelius knew exactly what God required in order to get right with God. There doesn't have to be a sinner's prayer spoken out loud, of course not, but God reads the heart and won't give His Holy Spirit to anyone unless He sees they've turned from sin to Jesus. Also, God said He confirms His Word with signs following so we can expect miracles to follow the preaching of the message of salvation. If not, how do we know which God/god did the healing? Jesus said it's better to enter heaven with one eye than have two eyes and go to hell. Hence, God is more interested in our eternal soul being saved than in our physical health. Hence we Christians do a great disservice to the name of Jesus if we attempt to go around healing people without explaining the urgent need for them to be reconciled with God. xx

Where Josh and Michael are speaking of the flesh//sin nature, I think that if the case can be made that if there is truly any nature of sinfulness for a Christian, than it is a dead nature, because the command of scripture is for that nature (old man) to be considered dead. Not to consider that it has any power, place, or influence in the Christian‘s life. To create such a place in the future, does not follow the scriptural example that we are given. The only thing that comes close in the NT… “for IF we sin have an advocate…” -1 John 2:1

14:08 raises a good question. Healing on the street without giving the gospel message. I think it might be instructive to turn to the scriptures, and read what Peter did............
    Acts 3:3-10
    Modern English Version
v3 Now Peter and John went up together to the temple at the ninth hour, the hour of prayer. v2 A man lame from birth was being carried, whom people placed daily at the gate of the temple called Beautiful to ask alms from those who entered the temple.
v3 Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked for alms.
v4 Peter, gazing at him with John, said, “Look at us.”
v5 So he paid attention to them, expecting to receive something from them.
v6 Then Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but I give you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.”
v7 He took him by the right hand and raised him up. Immediately his feet and ankles were strengthened.
v8 Jumping up, he stood and walked and entered the temple with them, walking and jumping and praising God.
v9 All the people saw him walking and praising God.
v10 They knew that it was he who sat for alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple. And they were filled with wonder and amazement at what happened to him.

God is doing a transforming work in the heart of the believer and we are being conformed to the image of our Savior. Righteousness is imputed/credited through faith in Jesus Christ. It is not our righteousness.
Christ lived the perfect life, therefore we are credited His righteousness. There is a transformation going on in our lives, but beloved to believe you live a moment of your life that somehow we don’t sin, we don’t understand sin.
To say so we minimize sin, and we reckon God to be much less Holier than He is. I understand what this dude is saying because it is typical Pentecostal theology.
It sounds good on the surface until it plays out in peoples boasting, and in a persons striving to live up to the standard of everyone else’s boasting…
I believe Paul taught against it, in Galatians 3, but who am I?

When discussing the flesh of a Christian, and the already-and-not-yet, go to 1 Corinthians 15, and see what's corruptible and when it becomes incorruptible.
Go to Philippians 3:20-21, which says we're waiting for the transformation of our bodies, which will happen when Jesus returns.
Go to 2 Corinthians 4:16, which says our outer man in wasting away while the inner man is being renewed.

Mmm, yes, the quote in Matt 8:17 which quotes Isaiah and says Jesus carried our diseases was fulfilled PRIOR to His crucification so I don't understand how we can say physical healing is in the atonement when Matthew interpreted Isaiah a different way. Also if physical healing was in the atonement, surely we'd all be healed from every physical ailment the Instant we got saved, just the same as we were forgiven of all our sins, wouldn't we? Interesting, something I need to study more.

The twisting of the truth of the gospel is very subtle in this conversation and presentation of the gospel... Identity gospel, under-emphasizing repentance of sin, misrepresenting now-and-not-yet theology, and still holding to "God wants to heal evryone". The Bethel gospel is truly a shallow gospel, not wanting to offend. Not all that this pastor said are totally false, but inaccuracies abound, and a lot of what should be emphasized remains missing from his explanation and presentation of the gospel.

The man acted surprised at the most base level any-Christian-ought-to-know fact that we are led astray by our own evil desires passage, which Michael brought out. He seems like he has some okay talking points for his view but you can tell he needs to brush up and adjust his theology in some areas in a big way.

Where does the Bible teach that Christians can still be bound by generational curses? If that's what you mean I'll have to disagree. It says in Ephesians that Jesus became a curse for us when He hung on the cross. Since we die with Christ and are raised to life in Him at the new birth, we too are free from the curse of the law just the same as Jesus rose from death free from it and secured victory and salvation for all who believe.

Oh dear. Experiences? Seeing what God does and who He is, in the Bible, is where our salvation should come from. Not anchored by experience and feelings. I’ve listened to bethel sermons so many times to see if my thoughts are wrong. I don’t hear the Gospel preached. Maybe I’ve missed the couple sermons a year where they throw it in. Not judging salvation but judging a church that really emphasizes experience and prophecy to sell tuition to go to their supernatural school.

I'm a Seer and God has shown me a lot about Bethel being a cult. I've been to churches affiliated with Bethel and my spiritual brother who's a prophet aslo had visited Bethel can confirm Bethel is a open door to the occult. The spirit in Bethel is the same spirit in the Vineyard church and the emergent Church. It's a mix of Catholicism and Pentecostalism. God showed me in a dream that them mixing is like the mixing of hot & cold making it lukewarm. I call it the lukewarm church. I don't see prophets speaking out against Bethel but I will.

It is as if "You do the Gospel stuff and we'll do the other stuff" - what concerns me is not that this man goes out into the world and preaches the Gospel, but that he will likely funnel converts into a fellowship that does not practice discernment in the slightest.
Concerning their leader (Bill Johnson) advocating for Todd Bentley in his commissioning at Lakeland. I saw the fruit of that dirty anointing destroy my former fellowship. That man operated in the demonic and was also a brazen liar, yet Bill cannot possibly have bothered to test the spirits. The Holy Spirit permitted me to see darkness followed by judgement but I was not believed when delivering the warning to the leadership (not even my words were tested). The reason for this was because if Bill said that somebody is an anointed man of God then that was all the confirmation they needed.
So if the leader lacks discernment, what will become of the congregation?
If I was preaching the Gospel in Redding, I would prepare before going out by visiting numerous fellowships in the area so that any new convert could have an opportunity to be discipled. I would not recommend any fellowship that does not value discernment (therefore ALL the gifts of the Spirit) and would not recommend any fellowship that is cessationist. Not a place to blow up and not a place to dry up. I guess that it is getting increasingly harder to find such a place in these days.

The Reformed "gospel" is a false gospel invented in the 1500s. The Bible teaches Christ saves sinners from their sin through baptismal regeneration, and the Holy Spirit living inside them gives them grace to actually obey and be righteous just as Christ is righteous (Romans 8:4). Only those who persevere in good works by walking in the Holy Spirit and thereby defeating sin will be saved.
